“A Texas Heroes & Friends Tribute to Randy Travis” has announced additional performers for the upcoming star-studded show at the Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas this Wednesday (Nov. 15). Paul Overstreet, Asleep at the Wheel‘s Ray Benson, Casey Donahew, Pecos & The Rooftop‘s Pecos Hurley, Mike Ryan, Jon Wolfe, Rosie Flores, Waylon Payne, Jolie Holliday and Sonny Burgess have all joined the lineup for the tribute show, which will be filled with many of Travis' 23 No. 1 hits performed live by some of his musical heroes and friends specifically from or greatly associated with the Texas music scene. Texas has been close to Travis' heart since he was a boy, learning about the cowboy lifestyle from his father in rural North Carolina. He always had a special connection with Texas fans and primarily resided in nearby New Mexico in the '90s. In the 2010s, Travis and his wife Mary moved to a ranch in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where they now call home, and have had a deep rooted relationship with the Lone Star State, its culture and its music ever since. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Randy Travis Foundation. The foundation is focused on stroke and aphasia awareness and supporting music education in schools. Previously announced performers include Clay Walker, Cody Jinks, Joe Nichols, Neal McCoy, War Hippies, Braxton Keith, Jacob Tolliver, Whey Jennings, Casey Chesnutt and Garrett Miles. Also, Travis' original touring band will back all of the artists on some of his most enduring songs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, Americana singer-songwriter Waylon Payne talks about Willie's 1970 cover of Joni Mitchell's iconic “Both Sides Now.” Waylon, an NPR-darling as an artist now, grew up in Willie World; his mom, Sammi Smith—of “Help Me Make It Through the Night” fame—played package shows with Willie in the ‘70s; and his dad, Jody Payne, was Willie's lead guitarist for almost forty years. Waylon walks us through all that, describing the way Willie songs were his lullabies as a kid, the incredibly difficult personal trials when he says Willie saved his life, and the time Willie paid his songwriting the highest praise possible. Note: the compliment wasn't remotely suitable for small ears.

On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former Nashville recording Artist, Chad Brock, and singer/songwriter Tom Yankton!CHAD BROCK In high school, Brock played football & was offered a post-secondary scholarship to play sports. He turned down the scholarship, however, as his experiences in the school choir had convinced him to pursue a singing career. Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow this dream, but he met with little success at first. In 1994, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, but he did not release any music for over three years.Warner Brothers and WCW got together to cross-promote Brock, and he trained at World Championship Wrestling's training facility, the WCW Power Plant. Chad wrestled for WCW from 1994 -1996, until an injury forced him to retire. He also appeared at several WCW events in 1999, where he was briefly involved in an angle with Curt Hennig. In 1998, Brock released his debut single, "Evangeline", which peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. That song's follow-up, the ballad "Ordinary Life", went on to become Brock's first major hit,[1] peaking at number 3 on the same chart, as well as number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that song's success, Brock released his self-titled debut album. Its third and final single, "Lightning Does The Work", reached number 19 in 1999.Brock's fourth chart single was a rewrite of Hank Williams, Jr.'s signature song "A Country Boy Can Survive", a number 2 hit for Williams in 1981. Chad's version, which featured Williams and George Jones, was entitled "A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version)", was re-written with lyrics pertaining to the Year 2000 problem (abbreviated Y2K). The song served as the first single from Brock's 2000 album Yes!. Its second single was the title track, which went on to become Brock's only number-one Billboard hit,[1] as well as a number 22 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The third and last single from Yes! ("The Visit") peaked at number 21.2001 saw the release of Brock's 3rd and final album for Warner Bros.. Entitled III, it was less successful than its predecessor. III had only one chart entry in "Tell Me How", which failed to make the Top 40. This album also reprised Brock's three highest-charting singles ("Yes!", "Ordinary Life" and "Lightning Does The Work"). Shortly thereafter, he signed to Broken Bow Records, then a newly formed independent label. Although he released five singles for Broken Bow, four of which made the charts, he never put out a full album.TOM YANKTONTom Yankton's rowdy, high-energy, multi-million streaming, wildly-talented brand of award-winning, party crowd entertainment wouldn't be complete without, 1.) My favorite album of, well, the decade, and maybe all times, is "Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher, and Me" by Waylon Payne. On this episode I chat Waylon up about the record and more. Additional deets on the website soon.
The son of country music royalty; check. Shipped off to live with his ultra-religious aunt and uncle who ultimately outcasted him after he came out of the closet in his teens; check. Did drugs for the first time with this father; check. Established himself as a viable country artist with a strong debut record; check. Disappeared like Eddie from “Eddie & the Cruisers” for the better part of 15 years – lost in a confusing haze of drugs, illicit sex, more drugs and even more drugs; check. Played Jerry Lee Lewis in the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line;” check. Quietly wrote songs for Miranda Lambert, Charlie Robison, Lee Ann Womack, Aaron Lewis and Ashley Monroe among others; check. Exploded back on the scene with a remarkable sophomore effort, taking the music world by storm; check. Is now on the road, tearing it up with Elizabeth Cook; check. This is not a movie script. It's the real life story of singer-songwriter Waylon Payne, named for his godfather Waylon Jennings, and the son of Willie Nelson's sideman Jody Payne and Grammy award-winning country singer Sammi Smith. The Load Out spent more than a year chasing an interview with Payne and his people finally relented to our delight. And the conversation did not disappoint. He addresses the ups and downs of his star-crossed life and the resilience he demonstrated in climbing his way out of a drug-filled hole to find peace and success in the music spectrum his parents once owned.
Joey and Dani talk with Country Artist Waylon Payne about growing up with famous musician parents, family trauma, addictions and how he got through it all to write and record his new album, Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me. High Visibility: On Location in Rural America and Indian Country
In this episode, Karl Unnasch joins Matthew Fluharty for a conversation on his creative process, rural community, and bridging difference between cultures and geographies. Husk, his metal and stained glass sculpture of a crushed Busch Light can, is included in the High Visibility exhibition.A rugged farm upbringing streaked with a penchant for the surreal: This has been the driving force behind the work of Karl Unnasch. With decades of expertise in wood, metal, stonework and stained glass, phantasmagorical combinations of media have become his hallmark. Backed by a comprehensive education in the arts (MFA 2003), his notions morph into works that toy with nostalgia, knitting together sources of collective memory while ringing with an element of his own whimsy.Unnasch's smaller-scale work has been exhibited as far as Europe and acclaimed in publications such as the New York Times and Art in London Magazine, while his larger-scale, award-winning public art has been featured on the likes of NBC's Today show, Reader's Digest and Voice of America. For over a decade, Unnasch has focused primarily on public and architectural art, typically incorporating backlit stained glass into sculptural installations. His work adorns educational facilities, banks, theaters, libraries, museum grounds, businesses and public gathering spaces across North America. To dive deeper into Karl Unnasch's work:http://www.karlunnasch.com/For more information on the High Visibility exhibition at the Plains Art Museum:https://plainsart.org/exhibitions/high-visibility/High Visibility exhibition site: https://inhighvisibility.org/In this conversation, Karl mentions the following works:Operant, at the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston:http://www.karlunnasch.com/project-pages/operant/2019-05-operant-an-oldowonk-cataract-stained-glass-dump-truck.htmlRuminant, in Reedsburg, Wisconsin:http://www.karlunnasch.com/project-pages/ruminant/2013-10-ruminant-stained-glass-harvesting-combine.htmlSlumgullion, at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa:http://www.karlunnasch.com/project-pages/slumgullion/2018-10-slumgullion-the-venerate-outpost-philbrook-museum-tulsa-log-cabin.htmlAt the conclusion of our time together, Karl mentions some music that has been moving him lately:Sturgill Simpson:https://www.sturgillsimpson.com/Waylon Payne:https://waylonpaynemusic.co/The HU:https://www.thehuofficial.com/We are grateful for the support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

On this episode of The Business Side of Music, we talk with singer/songwriter Heidi Newfield, who was one of the founding members of the award-winning and chart-topping group Trick Pony. We discuss her career, along with her exciting new solo project “The Barfly Sessions”. On the album, she includes such collaborators as Randy Houser, Jim Lauderdale, Delbert McClinton, Kenny Vaughan, Mickey Raphael, and Waylon Payne. After recording three albums while fronting Trick Pony, charting eight singles, and branching out for her first solo project with the platinum-certified smash “Johnny & June,” Newfield knows her way around a studio ... and a stage. A bold stylish and true entertainer, she greets peers and fans alike with her small frame, big voice, friendly smile, and hug. Sharp and well-read, she knows herself and her audience. She would probably be voted most likely to not give a damn about anything but the music by a stunning collection of collaborators and co-writers which shows on The Barfly Sessions. Newfield co-produced The Barfly Sessions with Jim “Moose” Brown who, in addition to being a hit-making songwriter and producer, is known for playing Hammond B3, guitar, and as the bandleader of Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band. Escuchar audio

Host Tatiana Z takes Waylon back to his childhood: growing up around country royalty, playing Jerry Lee Lewis in Walk the Line, and his newest album, Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Waylon Payne's road to country music stardom seemed to be paved with gold. Son of songwriting legend Sammi Smith, guitar player Jodi Payne, and godson to Waylon Jennings.. The pedigree was there and it didn't take long to see that Waylon Payne's way with words and musical ability were also flourishing.. But sometimes life takes us on different paths and we find that our story becomes one fo redemption. Waylon has battled a plethora of his own demons but has regained clarity and has becomeone of the songwriting community's most incredible talents working in the industry. Join us as host, Robert Earl Keen, speaks with Waylon about his upbringing, acting career and his latest record "Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher and Me"
If Waylon Payne’s voice and music don’t pull you in, his incredible story of resilience will. From pulling himself up from rock bottom, to the country music in his blood and in his bones, Waylon is absolutely a force to be reckoned with. In addition to his own music, he’s also penned hits for Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, Ashley Monroe + more. Listen on as Chris takes to Zoom again this week to chat with Waylon about his new record “Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me”, and his incredible journey as a country music singer/songwriter.
Episode 147: As a literal child of the 1970s country outlaw movement, Waylon Payne had access to opportunity and temptation, and for most of his 48 years, temptation won. While immensely talented as a singer, songwriter and actor, he struggled with some harsh drug addictions and personal trauma. On the new album Blue Eyes, the Harlot, the Queer, the Pusher & Me, Payne chronicles his crash, his recovery and his return to the functioning world with incredible candor and grace. He's an extremely forthright conversationalist too. Also, a catch up with Ben and Dorothy of The Danberrys, a married duo from Nashville who've been through a journey of recovery of their own.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Waylon Payne over Zoom! Waylon Payne is a multi-talented artist known for his talent and passion for singing, songwriting, playing instruments, and acting. He’s the son of the two established artists, Jody Payne, an iconic guitarist, and Sammi Smith, a Grammy Award-winning singer. You really know how the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up being with his mother on tour. He was under the supervision of Sammi’s brother and sister-in-law who were living in a strict Christian household. It was Waylon’s inspiration to enroll in a seminary with the goal of becoming a minister. Apparently, as he got used to and fancied the taste of marijuana, alcohol, and music, these were against the perspective of his aunt and uncle. His career in the field of music was molded when he was taking chances to perform in the clubs of Los Angeles in California. Being featured in different renowned clubs across the country and partnered with flourishing artists and musicians bought him a seat in the music industry. He started writing, singing, and recording his creations alongside being with his friends who helped him build a name. One of which is Keith Gattis who is a producer at that time. One opportunity led him to another. Carnival Music was the first record label that signed him. Since then, he wrote songs for towering artists in the music industry such as Miranda Lambert, Cory Marrow, Ashley Monroe, Aaron Lewis, Charlie Robison, and Lee Ann Womack who was nominated for Grammy’s for Solitary Thinking released in 2010. https://twitter.com/WaylonPaynehttps://www.facebook.com/WaylonPayneMusic/https://music.apple.com/us/artist/waylon-payne/15558247American Songwriter Podcast Network
A curious and fresh combination of grit and humor, Josh Morningstar is knocking down stereotypes with his worn boots and unforgettable raspy voice. He is a small-town boy that originally hails from Funkstown, Maryland, and he carries those roots in a suitcase with him everywhere he goes. His small-town charm is evident in the way he greets people, and in the conversational way that he weaves the stories of his life into his music. In front of the bright lights and behind the microphone isn't where Morningstar feels most at home. Named the 2018 Texas Radio Songwriter of the Year, he and his Kristofferson signed guitar have knocked out melodies in dingy hotels all across the country. He's written songs alongside Kendell Marvel, Channing Wilson, Autumn McEntire, and many more. Morningstar was also the writer of several Cody Jinks songs, including his #1 hit “Must Be The Whiskey".His lyrics force listeners to sit up and pay attention, and his songs are always full of truth-bearing stories. The familial connection Morningstar forges with people continues long after his shows are over. Josh Morningstar has shared the stage with some of today's most sought after folk and country artists, including Shooter Jennings, Cody Jinks, Tyler Childers, Todd Snider, Colter Wall, and Ward Davis. Morningstar continues to lead the charge on the front lines of a new wave of country music - one full of soulful honesty, the familiar and true twang of an old guitar, and provoking melodies that tattoo stories to the souls of the listeners. His ability to write about tragedies and victories enamor his tribe of self-proclaimed “Crazies”, and the best part of it all is that he's just getting started.Song writing credits with: Hayes Carll, "Big" Al Anderson (NRBQ), Kendell Marvel, Cody Jinks, Erin Enderlin, Autumn McEntire, Hannah Blaylock (Edens Edge), Sunny Sweeney, Ward Davis, Larry McCoy, Mark McGuinn, Billy Don Burns, Alex Williams, Channing WIlson, Wyatt Durette, Casper McWade, Steve Dean, Chris Gantry, John Berry, Sam Williams, Waylon Payne
Waylon Payne is the son of country artist Sammie Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night," "Then You Walk In," Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again") and Jody Payne (Willie Nelson's long-time guitarist). It's safe to say that Waylon's childhood looks a little different than most. Living with his Aunt and Uncle at the age of 2 months till adulthood would be a foundation that would set the tone for religion, hard drugs, sexual abuse, but probably more important is understanding who he is. Now out on the road with Willie Nelson and the family, he learns acceptance. But until Hollywood became his next destination that would launch his career into film (Walk The Line, Crazy, Turnabout), introductions to Keith Gattis, Lucinda Williams, and more set the stage for country music in Los Angeles. Even though Blue Eyes, the Harlot, the Queer, the Pusher & Me is his most personal project yet, are there still things left unsaid? Waylon now is in recovery and celebrates sobriety by putting more of himself out there in his music. Hoping that it really helps the ones that need it the most.
Album of the Week: Matt Woods -- Mornings After Matt Woods’ new EP Mornings After is signature Woods: his powerhouse vocals make the stories of small peoples’ pain operatic in scope. Woods can crank it up and get people dancing as well as anybody, all with a twinkle of his eyes and a workingman’s righteous fury. But on Mornings After, as the title suggests, Woods slows things down a bit, giving us one of his more contemplative works to date. Mornings After has a little more country soul than his past few releases, but all of the heart and explosive energy you can expect from Woods. With Glossary’s Joey Kneiser as producer, you know that the EP is as genuine as beautifully engineered as they come. On Episode 118, I am joined by singer-songwriter Waylon Payne. At the end of this week (Friday, September 11), Payne will be releasing Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher and Me, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 debut album, The Drifter. This new album is quite the opus for Payne as he details the struggles, pain, heartache, relapse, growth, beauty, and strength of the past decade (and really, his entire life). Like the greats before him, Payne is a sharp-witted poet and gifted storyteller who can turn a phrase with the absolute best of them one minute and deliver genuine gut-punches and teary-eyed ballads the very next.During this interview, we talk about the writing and recording of Blue Eyes, creating cinematic moods, processing grief, the strength & beauty found on Blue Eyes, his time out in Los Angeles, writing with the likes of Pat Green, Lee Ann Womack, Wade Bowen, & Ashley Monroe, old notebooks of songs, essays, new country artists like Logan Ledger & Zephaniah OHora, and a few great stories about his mother, the late Sammi Smith (Which, he mentions listening to "Today I Started Loving You Again" so listen here). This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Once considered the most famous baby in country music, the author, producer, and singer/songwriter John Carter Cash is still making music inside the famous cabin that his father built almost 50 years ago. The son of June Carter and the legendary Johnny Cash, John Carter grew up during the height of his parents' careers, sharing the world's biggest stage from the moment he could walk. Subscribe and download on your favorite podcast platform: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Tune In, Stitcher. In this episode, John Carter shares some insightful stories about his father's writing process, their life on the road and sings some of his favorite songs from both sides of his family. He talks about growing up inside the Carter Cash legacy, admitting it might have been more difficult if his father hadn't been such a humble and generous man who wrote and recorded music till the day he died. One of the artists that Johnny Cash championed was a talented girl from Oklahoma, named Sammi Smith. Her son, singer/songwriter Waylon Payne also joins us in this episode to celebrate his Mama. Through the ups and downs, Waylon describes life as one of constant struggle, but also one of indelible perseverance. He speaks of his mother in reverent tones as someone who believed and constantly inspired him as he followed in her footsteps. Waylon sings beautifully throughout and plays a powerful rendition of "Mama Drive On," a song he wrote in his mother's honor. Robert K. You may know him as Jerry Lee Lewis from the movie “Walk the Line”. He’s also son of famed country singer Sammi Smith and Jody Payne (Willie Nelson’s long time guitar player), but beyond all that, Waylon Payne is a fantastic songwriter, singer, just a true artist, and a down to earth great guy to be around. He and Jacob discuss life growing up in Texas, the trials, tribulations and demons we all face in some way or another, and much more. Listen and soak it in.
