“My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.”--Charlie Hill, comedian and member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. In this week's episode, Julie and Eve talk to comedian, writer, and actor Adrianne Chalepah and comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff about Native Americans and comedy. An enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Adrianne has been a stand-up comedian for more than a decade. She's the founder of the indigenous femme comedy troupe, Ladies of Native Comedy, and she plays the role of Shannon Diabo on Peacock's hit show “Rutherford Falls.” Kliph was a stand-up comic for eight years. He's the author of The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy and, most recently, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. In her conversation with Eve and Julie, Adrianne describes how before becoming a professional comedian, she was kicked out of public school for being a class clown and then sent to a U.S. government-run boarding school for Native American children. She also discusses whether the increasing success of Native American comedians like herself and others is indicative of lasting change. Kliph shares stories about Charlie Hill, the first Native American comedian to appear on network television and how he revolutionized opportunities for Native American comedians. We Had an absolute Legend on the show today! Reigning Open Division World Champion Jorge Ballesteros. What an honor and what an awesome insight into the mind of a champion!
It's just me! :O I wanted to slow things down and mix up content a bit. I updated a bit on plans for the podcast as I wait a little longer for more people to be vaccinated and try to do more in-person interviews. In this episode I talked about not quite feeling up to going to see outdoor standup yet, some specials I watched recorded in the pandemic, and talked about an academic article defining standup comedy's social function at the height of the '80s comedy boom. I'm hoping to catch up with some past guests to talk about their first stage time back at it as outdoor shows have picked up quite a bit here in Los Angeles. The book I ordered and hope to talk more about by Kliph Nesteroff is We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy (https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/We-Had-a-Little-Real-Estate-Problem/Kliph-Nesteroff/9781982103033) Thanks for listening! 1. Always punch up 2. Keep swinging 3. Get vaccinated and shame stupid comedians for using their gigantic platform to spread ignorance of science and lack of empathy for the society that built them.

Specifically, this episode dives into what this past year has been like for Black teenagers (Generation Z). We were rolling right into the second half of season 2 really dedicated to strictly adhering to a chronological recap timeline. BUT WE COULDN'T HELP OURSELVES! We HAD to talk about the Benson/Stabes reunion. Because the show aired on Thursday night, Tasha couldn't do a chaser AND have it out by Tuesday. But, who needs a chaser when we've got the reunion of the decade?
Jackie Keliiaa is a stand-up comedian raised in Hayward and based in Oakland. She's unapologetically Bay, and proud of her Yerington, Paiute and Washoe roots. She's also funny af. Building off Charlie Hill's legacy, Keliiaa cracks jokes about colonialism, Native culture and family, alongside her trials and tribulations with dating. Before the pandemic, you could catch her shows at Punchline San Francisco, Comedy Oakland and Tommy T's. She's featured alongside other Native comedians in the televised 'First Nation Comedy Experience'. She also produces events that showcase woman of color comics, and she just launched a podcast where she interviews creative friends. One of her latest endeavors includes contributing a chapter in the newly published book, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. It's a deep dive into the under-appreciated legacy of Native comedians, taking its name from an iconic Charlie Hill joke, "My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York... We had a little real estate problem."
The United States has been witnessing the alarming rise in racist, violent, unprovoked attacks against Asian American families and Asian-owned businesses for the last 11 months. Chinese American families are being wrongly blamed for the coronavirus spreading worldwide. Asian-owned businesses have been vandalized, their sales plummeting. Asian people have been killed, beaten and robbed. One coalition tracked more than 2,800 anti-Asian hate crimes from last March to December. We want to shine light on an Asian-owned business that everyone should know about! Hydrate this year and relax simultaneously. For Joy helps you hydrate and relax simultaneously. All three flavors of this bottled iced-tea are so delicious and do not taste sweet! Too many of us are in the grind and For Joy made the beverage to help your mind and body. After being introduced to CBD and the benefits of how hemp-infused products were affecting active lifestyles, the For Joy founders wanted to create a CBD beverage that was delicious and free of any artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, and even added natural flavoring. They wanted to create something they could drink daily that they knew would only enhance their mind, body, and spirit and not have to worry about sugars and chemicals for flavors. They wanted a whole product that was beneficial, not just the CBD. Whether you are stressed out and your emotions are high or feel a bit gloomy, CBD can always get you back to neutral. For Joy is a brand made to spread joy to the world. Web: https://www.drinkforjoy.com Follow: @drinkforjoy About: In early 2019, we were introduced to CBD and the benefits of how it was affecting our active lifestyles. Whether we were stressed out and our emotions were high or felt a bit gloomy and our emotions were low, CBD always seemed to get us back to neutral. We started with taking tinctures but quickly began searching for a CBD beverage that was tasty and free of any artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors and even natural flavoring. We wanted a whole product that was beneficial, not just the CBD. It was at this time that the concept of For Joy was conceived. Selfishly, we created a product for ourselves. Something we could drink daily that we knew would only enhance our mind, body and spirit and not have to worry about funny sugars and chemicals for flavors. We worked hard for 6 months, formulating and reformulating several different blends of black tea to arrive at what we have today. A tasty, refreshing, “just-like-your-grandma-used-to-make” iced tea that is infused with high quality CBD. The world's a little funny right now. Nothing like the 90's when we all grew up. We're a team of entrepreneurs that are running a business with no aspirations to dive into politics. But we still feel an incredible sense of responsibility to leave the world in a better place than we entered for our children and for our communities. Because of that, we wanted to create a lifestyle brand that exudes an overarching emotion that was relatable and attainable by everyone. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of our co-founders, Jeff Chu, has been a lifelong Bay Area sports enthusiast. Around the time when we began brainstorming names for our company, Jeff had listened to an interview of the Golden State Warriors, Steph Curry. He talked about how the Warriors tried to elicit a specific emotion in every aspect of the organization; joy. The idea was if you were pursuing an action with a sense of joy, those limiting beliefs that linger in all of our minds, for that moment, they melt away. And all that was left was unrestricted, limitless potential. Your true potential.

For starters I'd like to apologize I said 10-15 minutes and We took 37 minutes. I hope you don't mind! The end of season one is abrupt and for that we apologize but on to season two! I Interview Nick Rine and talk about joining forces, Nick had started a podcast named Nick Rine's Sensitivity Warning. Its an interview staged episode loaded with tons of derailments. Its an adventure that we are excited to take, I think the possibilities are endless. What is something that you dont necessarily see an end game for? What I mean by that is... What is something that you look at like well once I become this then I want to become this, ALMOST like a revolving door but not in a bad way. How impressive is sound though? We Had alot of fun recording this episode and I'm excited going forward. Stay tuned for more.
