Welcome to the first episode of our summer series of chats where Andrew catches up with filmmakers and creatives who are behind some of the years best films. From Saturday Night, to Lee, to We Live in Time, and Australia's own Memoir of a Snail, we've got some great film discussions to keep you going over this festive break.First off the rank is a chat with two of the creatives behind Saturday Night, the comedy retelling of the first night of Saturday Night Live. In it, we follow a young Lorne Michaels, played by Golden Globe nominee Gabrielle LaBelle, who attempts to wrangle an unwieldly and chaotic cast of comedians from Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), to Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt), to George Carlin (Matthew Rhys), to Jim Belushi (Matt Wood), and Rosie Shuster (Rachel Sennott), plus many more. What eventuates is a slightly manic, utterly frenetic, yet extremely captivating almost real time night of comedy and chaos leading up to that iconic opening sentence 'Live from New York...' In the following chats, I talk with Gabriel LaBelle about how he came to work on Saturday Night, how he has become an almost surrogate historian of American pop culture with his work on The Fabelmans and now Saturday Night, and how he managed to maintain a level of comedy on screen. After my chat with Gabriel, I talk with writer-director Jason Reitman about bringing this all together. I kick off the conversation by confessing how much of a die-hard Young Adult fan I am, alongside the value of physical media, before we flow into talking about creating an energetic vibe on set with a live score by Jon Batiste, plus much more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We return from our brief hiatus with our most in-depth episode yet, culled from five hours of discussions recorded over a period of several months with William Paul, author of the essential critical study Ernst Lubitsch's American Comedy. We discuss Paul's friendship with frequent Lubitsch collaborator Samson Raphaelson, Raphaelson's sometimes-harsh retrospective criticism of his own work, the linguistic tics that unite Lubitsch's filmography, their methods of adapting obscure Hungarian plays, Raphaelson's recollections of Alfred Hitchcock's very different working methods, and Suspicion's shocking alternate ending. Later on, we discuss the neuroscientific mechanisms of comedy, the biological purpose of laughter, the relationship of To Be Or Not To Be and the idea of “passing”, and engage in some record-correction as to whether or not the film was as controversial as is widely believed. Edited by Brennen King and Eden Cote-Foster. We have a Discord! Listen on: Apple Podcasts | Spotify NEXT WEEK: Dara and Ryan Jaffe join us for the first of two discussions on To Be Or Not To Be For information as to where to find this film, check out our resources page. It's easy to listen to the news and conclude that we have never been more gripped by the so-called “Culture Wars.” But Kliph Nesteroff argues just the opposite: today's conflict isn't a fluke, it's part of a long history of conflict, controversy and recrimination. Canadian comic Kliph Nesteroff is, according to the New York Times, the “premier popular historian of comedy.” He has authored two books since starting out as a stand-up comic, including “The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy” and “We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans and Comedy.” His work has been praised by comedy legends from Gilbert Gottfried to Mel Brooks to Norm Macdonald. His forthcoming third book is titled “Outrageous: A History of Showbiz and the Culture Wars.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Perhaps at no other time in modern history has comedy been such a big draw, with superstar comedians selling out venues as big as the ones that popstars can conquer. But at the same time, it seems that comedy is itself in peril, as more and more jokes, and the people who tell them, get cancelled. So where is the world of comedy at in 2023? EPISODE 1877: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Kliph Nesteroff, author of OUTRAGEOUS, about the history of American showbiz and its perennial culture warsKliph Nesteroff was born and raised in a pacifist community in rural British Columbia. After being permanently expelled from high school for the content of a speech he delivered during a campaign for school president, he moved to Toronto and started performing stand-up comedy. Influenced by the Beat Generation, punk rock music, and his anti-war upbringing, Nesteroff primarily performed in underground bars, punk rock clubs, and alternative comedy venues. He quickly developed a cult following for the combative, insult-comic character Shecky Grey, which landed him on the cover of several Canadian free weeklies. After eight years of stand-up, Nesteroff became an advocate for the homeless, the mentally ill, and the drug addicted, accepting a position in an experimental clinic that nursed addicts with life threatening infections back to health. While working night shifts at the clinic, Nesteroff spent much of his time writing about stand-up comics from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, focusing on the mafia-run nightclubs that used to employ comedians. The articles were frequently published by the web-magazine of free form radio station WFMU. In 2011, Marc Maron began talking about Nesteroff's articles on several episodes of his WTF podcast, eventually extending an invitation to Nesteroff to appear on his program. After a 2012 appearance on WTF with Marc Maron, Nesteroff got a book deal with Grove Press to write the definitive history of 20th Century American stand-up. Released in 2015, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy became a best-selling book and led to a television career. Nesteroff is a frequent talking head on countless programs and documentary films about comedy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.
Dean Obeidallah, comedian and co-founder of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival and host of "The Dean Obeidallah Show" on SiriusXM radio, talks about the New York Arab American Comedy Festival 20th anniversary tour and finding ways to laugh in tough times, from the festival's founding in the wake of 9/11 to the conflicts today.
"Black people are the roots of American style comedy." As comedy month at theGrio comes to a close, Michael Harriot explains the history of comedy and the roles enslaved people played in making it what it is today. The Greeks are credited with creating the art form, but their version of humor is not what we enjoy today. Instead, that style was developed by enslaved people who used laughter to cope with their oppression.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Standup comedy is under attack, figuratively and literally. In the past few months, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were both physically assaulted on stage. And with increasing calls to silence offensive comics, more attacks are likely. But why should you, good citizen, care? Why should you stand up for a bunch of degenerates who just want to tell dirty jokes? It's because offensive comedy has a long history in America of shining light on issues that "good" people would rather just ignore. From Lenny Bruce to George Carlin to Richard Pryor to—yes—Andrew Dice Clay, offensive comics have a unique ability to get us talking about subjects that make us uncomfortable. And it's only through this openness that we're able to question premises, traditions, and biases, and decide whether change is necessary. Offensive comedy matters, and it deserves protecting. “My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.” -Charlie Hill, comedian and member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. (RE-RELEASE) In this week's episode, Julie and Eve talk to comedian, writer, and actor Adrianne Chalepah and comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff about Native Americans and comedy. In her conversation with Eve and Julie, Adrianne describes how before becoming a professional comedian, she was kicked out of public school for being a class clown and then sent to a U.S. government-run boarding school for Native American children. She also discusses whether the increasing success of Native American comedians like herself and others is indicative of lasting change. Kliph also shares stories about Charlie Hill, the first Native American comedian to appear on network television and how he revolutionized opportunities for Native American comedians. (This episode was originally released on 9/2/21.) An enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Adrianne Chalepah has been a stand-up comedian for more than a decade. She's the founder of the indigenous femme comedy troupe, Ladies of Native Comedy, and she plays the role of Shannon Diabo on Peacock's hit show “Rutherford Falls.” Kliph Nesteroff was a stand-up comic for eight years. He's the author of The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy and, most recently, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. Ever since I was a little kid Ice Cube was always in the house. I remember seeing Cubes "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" album (cassette tape) on the seat of my dads ugly old rusted Subaru. What always stood out to me about that album was the look on Ice Cubes face. When you think about Hip Hop Culture and you think, great music with a solid message and that's what O'Shea Jackson SR (Ice Cube) has been doing for the past 20+ years!Rather it be his hard hitting records like "Why We Thugs" or his light fun records like "Drop Girl" ft. Redfoo and 2Chainz, Cube is an artist that isn't afraid to be him at all times. This is also true for the films that Cube has been in as well. The first movie I ever seen Ice Cube in was a 1995 film called 'Higher Learning' starring Omar Epps, Laurence Fishburne, Tyra Banks and a plethora of other stars. This Drama really touched on racism within America and as a child I learned that hate comes from either misunderstandings or the lack of wanting to understand the next person. There is a lot to unpack when it comes to that topic and I know you didn't come here for that lol. The next film I remember from Cube was Friday! Another 1995 film except this one was no Drama, rather an American Comedy treasure! So, when Erockalypze gave me the word that I would be leading the Ice Cube Interview it was only natural that my stomach turned and my face got hot, the pressure was on. I never get nervous when talking with, well, anyone, but when I started to think about the career and person that O'Shea "Ice Cube" Jackson is, I got excited, not nervous but excited. I finally got the opportunity to talk to him about music, life, influences and the future. Obviously there are hundreds of other questions I would have loved to ask him but I didn't want to take up his whole morning. What question would you ask Cube if you had the chance?Artist; Ice CubeHost: DreRawkaRadio Show: Unrestricted w/ Drerawka 3PM-7PM | M-F
It is the penultimate episode of season one for your hosts Teebs and KidPhoenix. We've all had a lot of laughs -- mostly with the hosts at their own expenses. Where does that charm... that wit... that skill for the chucks come from? Quite simply put, your favorite duo had to watch a lot of comedians growing up. They watched comedians of all types, but the African-American comedian is one that is very special to both Teebs and KidPhoenix. In the history of African-American comedy, many people have held the title at one time or another throughout the decades as the undisputed African-American comedy champion. Today, your hosts go through some of that history from 1970 until present day and give their opinions for the best of the best in the decades that they've been on this earth. “My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.”--Charlie Hill, comedian and member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. In this week's episode, Julie and Eve talk to comedian, writer, and actor Adrianne Chalepah and comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff about Native Americans and comedy. An enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Adrianne has been a stand-up comedian for more than a decade. She's the founder of the indigenous femme comedy troupe, Ladies of Native Comedy, and she plays the role of Shannon Diabo on Peacock's hit show “Rutherford Falls.” Kliph was a stand-up comic for eight years. He's the author of The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy and, most recently, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. Kliph shares stories about Charlie Hill, the first Native American comedian to appear on network television and how he revolutionized opportunities for Native American comedians. Hey folks! Kliph Nesteroff is our guest this week. Kliph has done campus radio, worked for the CBC, been a stand-up comedian, and even published a remarkable blog about comedy history. Kliph was born in B.C. (where I first met him) but now lives in L.A. His first book, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and the History of American Comedy, has done exceptionally well and is a fabulous read. So is his latest, We Had A Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans and Comedy. As a white settler, Kliph isn't super keen on speaking for indigenous folks. In the book he handles this extremely well, but on the publicity circuit, he hasn't always been comfortable. To that end, I've included a second interview with comedian Jon Roberts, who appears in the book. We talk about his career, Kliph's book, and more. Hope you enjoy!

This show was not what I anticipated. Rather than spend the evening with the American Comedy and Emmy Award winning comedian, Craig Shoemaker, discussing his stand up, TV, and film career, we spent the time diving deep about behaviors, addiction, recovery, healing through laughter––even when there’s nary a joke to be found––there’s none needed. The mere act of laughing, even forced, is a mood changer, not only for the person guffawing, but for all in their path, as well. We tried it on. Vanna White, Merv Griffin, Bill Maher, Cheech and Chong, Farrah Fawcett, Eric Roberts, Billy Crystal, Will Miller, Nancy Allen, Rachelle Carson… some exclusive stories, never before shared, divulged… some secrets told, theirs, and his. We discovered we both spent time in the Laughter Company, near-missing. Craig replacing Eddie Murphy and me, Rosie O’Donnell. Crazy. Our mutual sobriety and varying opinions, perhaps swayed through open hearts and minds. How we’re dealing with our kids’ drinking (Happy 21st, Samantha, who was having her first legal cocktail, as Craig and I spoke), and Craig’s kids. The Champion gene… how to shine light on the darkness of others, and ourselves. Letting go, getting grateful, persistence, resilience… The Wizard of Oz as a metaphor of life. Laugh, an acronym - Love. Acceptance, Understanding, Gratitude, Humility… and how to apply each. Sounds heavy and dry… it t’wasn’t. We laughed like hell. I leave with new tools as a takeaway. I love surprises. The sound was great thanks to our new Blue Yeti, and Kevin Walt. Oh please Facebook, clear the visual blur. Please. Kliph Nesteroff is a comedy historian and expert who currently calls Hollywood, California home. Originally from South Slocan, British Columbia, Nesteroff made a name for himself as a stand-up comedian and then a journalistic writer. In 2015, Grove Press published Nesteroff’s remarkably comprehensive book, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and the History of American Comedy, which was lauded by critics, readers, and comedians themselves. Nesteroff’s latest project is a tv series for VICELAND called Funny How?, which examines aspects of comedy like bombing, breaking in, comedy classes, and niche comedy from the LGBTQ community and Christian comics. Funny How? is utterly fascinating and runs on VICELAND from July 10th to July 14th at 11:30 PM. Kliph and I had a chat recently about life in Slocan and loving MAD Magazine, the book he wrote about the secret, salacious oral history of Hockey Night in Canada that was ultimately blocked from being published, the importance of The Kids in the Hall to Canadian comedy, why and how he wrote The Comedians, why there might be so much general interest in how comedy works these days, the drug LSD, Funny How?, and more. http://thecomedycast.com Greg Dean is someone very well-known in the comedy world and if you've ever look for a book on stand-up comedy then chances are you've come across his book on stand-up; Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy. We started off by talking a bit about Greg heritage, coming from British stock, one side being Scottish, who still have a castle, and the other English. We spoke about Greg growing up in rural California and joining the theatre as a young man before literally running away with the circus at the age of 21. Then we chatted about Greg going onto becoming a successful, touring stand-up comedian before he turned his hand to teaching the craft of stand-up. Greg reveals the basics of his classes, the three mechanics as he calls them; the target assumption, connector and reinterpretation. Greg also speaks about being a member of the Internation Society of Humour Studies, being the only member that isn't part of academia. He also talks about reading as much academia as possible while researching his book and his contributions to the society. We talk then about the importance of comedians learning to read the reactions of their audiences so they can know how far they can take jokes, we speak too about nothing being off limits and about offending people from time to time and that comedians just have to get used to it. We chat then about whether anything still surprises him in comedy anymore or has it seen it all already? We speak more in depth about his book Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy and how it was a real labour of love that took 10 years to write and the struggle to find a publisher. And Greg tells two absolutely hilarious stories about previous students of his that had me roaring, you might be offended by if you are you're probably listening to the wrong podcast.

http://thecomedycast.com/ Zoltan came across my radar thanks to video Zoltan had posted up on the mighty Stand-Up Comedy thread over on Reddit entitled "Trump & Toilets". Having a name like Zoltan I instantly thought he was an American with Hungarian ancestry so it was a pleasant surprise to find out that he was actually born in Budapest and had lived there until shortly after the fall of Communism. So, we started out interviewing talking about Hungary, how great the place is and how Zoltan intends to return there this year for the first time in a long time. Since starting in stand-up comedy Zoltan has done particularly well in the comedy competitions he's entered; winning 8 competitions over the last few years. We spoke about how comedy competitions are a necessary evil in the entertainment world for getting more publicity. We spoke about Zoltan and his family moving to American from Hungary in the early 1990s and ending up where he's based now, in San Diego. We spoke about being an immigrant in America and how that had an effect on him growing up. We spoke too about Zoltan having an incredibly supportive mother and eve though coming from a country where you were lucky to have a job during communism she has supported his decision to become a stand-up comedian. We spoke too about touring the college scene, how the 'f word' isn't the 'f word' you're thinking of and how you pretty much go a bit mad being on the road when you spend so much time along. Trump gets an honorary mention. We don't like him. We spoke too about Zoltan's podcast; The Week in Zoltan, a solo podcast where Zoltan keeps his fans up-to-date with what's going on with both his career and his life in general. Finally then we speak about Zoltan visiting Europe this summer for The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, his thoughts and fears over it and one of my favourite subjects, the American phenomenon of 'clean comedy'.
http://thecomedycast.com/ W.T. Fallon is the author behind one of 2016's best works of political satire, Fail to the Chief, a book about a USA Presidential race based on the concept of reality TV. Under another pseudonym, V.R. Craft, she has also written a science fiction book called Stupid Humans. We stated off the interview by talking about pseudonyms and why the are an important literary device for authors; the importance of being able to create a new identity while writing in a different genre. We speak to about the importance of using critique groups when writing and taking onboard constructive criticism. We speak about W.T.'s work of satire Fail to the Chief, inp particular how she enjoying putting her Presidential hopefuls through menial jobs and lie detector tests. We spoke then about where political satire is these days and its importance, especially now that President Trump has somehow come to power and certainly seems to have it in for the media. That led us on to the modern phenomenon of fake news and how there's such a thin line between fake news and satire. We had a chat then about where W.T. is from, Arkansas and how it's not pronounced how it's spelt and why, for some reason, the state drink is cow's milk. We chat about W.T.'s literary and comedic influences growing up and how they've inspired her to write, that and getting sacked from a retail job which she describes as hellish. We speak too about W.T.'s other book under the V.R. Craft pseudonym, Stupid Humans a science fiction book about Humans fighting People. Finally then, we had a natter about W.T.'s love of comedy and how she desires to write jokes for performers and maybe even try stand-up comedy in the future.

I won't lie, this is a bit of a scoop for The Comedy Cast, as you obviously know we concentrate on stand-up comedians and authors so when I was presented with the chance to talk to someone who works, not even works, who organises everything behind the camera I grabbed it. Summer has had an incredible career and she's only going to get bigger and bigger in Hollywood, the list of films she's been involved with is far too big to go into here but she mentions a few in the interview. She also mentions her new role as Studio Head which she'll be taking on during the year. We start off the interview talking about growing up in Australia and getting her first gig as a model with Victoria's Secret, and then moving to America to pursue a career in acting. We spoke about how she has to shoulder two nicknames; The Duchess of Hollywood and The Wicked Witch of The West Coast and how and why she got them. We spoke about how she handles diva-like characters and directors who 'get too big for their breeches'. Summer tells a great story about how Ron Jeremy was the one who convinced her to go from being an actor to working behind the camera. We also talk about how to pitch a film to get it made, who to speak to and how to get your pitch down. I even try my hand at a pitch and was pleasantly surprised with the reaction I got.
Welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from Neil Snyder, an American stand-up comedian from Indiana. Welcome once again, let’s make 2017 even better here at The Comedy Cast, I’ve got loads planned and loads of guest already lined up so I’ll stop rambling and let’s get back to the podcasts. First … Continue reading The Comedy Cast Interview with American Stand-up Comedian Neil Snyder
Today you'll be hearing from an American stand-up comedian and actor Missy Grynkiewicz. We started off the interview talking about how she got the name Missy and how her previous career as an acting teacher and director helped her when she stated comedy. We spoke too about Missy's style of comedy and why she prefers to keep her comedy personal and relatable. We chatted about being from Maryland, how to pronounce it properly and how the whole state isn't anything like the Baltimore depicted in The Wire. We nattered about kids and why it's so much easier to love them when they're not actually around you. Then we chatted about Missy receiving a Grammy Nomination for her comedy album "Miss Representation" and the current state of comedy albums. We spoke about Missy receiving dickpics and how underneath it all it's actually quite touching and finally we spoke about "Days of Power" a movie starring Missy and Eric Roberts (of The Dark Knights, The Expendables and The Cable Guy fame) due for release in February 2017.
Today we've got something pretty cool for you listeners, an interview with an American ventriloquist, comedian and writer April Brucker, we got off to a great start by getting straight into how talented the Irish are at swearing and how to discipline kids Irish-style. We spoke about what April did before she got into comedy, mostly trying to get laid while in college and how she got into ventriloquism. This lead to April having a public access TV show while still in high school that aired in 36 American states and 6 countries and the fledgling technology of the world wide web. April was a massive viral hit in April 2015 when the British 'newpaper' The Daily Mail wrote an article about her dumping her boyfriend when he came to her with an ultimatum; me or the puppets. The article also revealed that April spends around $20,000 per year on her then 16 puppets, now 19, so of course we had to talk to about all of that. Poor April wasn't very impressed when I told her that Mussolini was a massive Daily Mail fan and they backs Donald Trump and Brexit in the recent elections. We spoke about the strange phenomenon of Irish people going to New York for Christmas shopping, being in Tommy Hilfiger's blimp. Then we got onto one of her newest puppets, Donald J. Tramp, not Trump.....Tramp, but you get the meaning, in January 2017 April will be touring America and hopefully the world with her new show The Lady and President Tramp. April's no fan of Tramp and she's no afraid of telling people either. We finally then spoke about April's comedic influences and her writing carrer, writing for Spaz Comics and releasing her own novel; I Came, I Saw, I Sang: Memoirs of a Singing Telegram Delivery Girl, a book about being a singing telegram delivery girl, as the title says, obviously.
Today you'll be hearing from an American stand-up comedian Liysa Callsen. Liysa and I had a great chat about all things comedy. First we spoke about why she got into comedy and why, in some of her YouTube videos, you'll hear her saying "Improv saved her life." So we had a chat about changing direction in life at a time when most people are settled and finding true happiness through comedy. We talked too about Liysa's comedy coming from a very personal place, rather than ganging up on easy targets she believes in being truthful with the audience. We spoke about her influences growing up, she talked too about growing up the daughter of blind parents and marrying a blind man and all the comedy-gold material that provided her with. We also spoke about the new trend in the corporate world of using improve comedy for team building and motivational exercises. And finally we spoke about her latest undertaking; Women, Wine & Whiskey.

Kliph Nesteroff writes for WFMU's Beware of the Blog. His book, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy, was released in November. “Well, comedy always becomes stale. Whether it’s offensive or not offensive, it has an expiry date, unfortunately. A lot of people don’t want to hear this because that means a lot of their favorite comedians suddenly become irrelevant. But that’s the history of comedy: the hippest, coolest guy today—whoever that is to you in comedy—50 years from now, the new generation is going to say, ‘That guy’s not funny, and he’s square.’ And they’re going to say, ‘This new young guy is funny.’ But in another 50 years that guy becomes the square who isn’t funny. And it’s not that they weren’t funny and everybody was wrong; it was that that person was relating to their time.” Thanks to MailChimp, Casper, Squarespace , and CreativeLive for sponsoring this week's episode. George talks with Kliph Nesteroff, author of The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves and Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy, about his encounters with comedy legends, and the career boost that came with appearing as a guest on Marc Maron's WTF podcast.
InThe Comedians, comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff brings to life a century of American comedy with real-life characters, forgotten stars, mainstream heroes and counterculture iconoclasts. Based on over two hundred original interviews and extensive archival research, Nesteroff’s groundbreaking work is a narrative exploration of the way comedians have reflected, shaped, and changed American culture over the past one hundred years.Starting with the vaudeville circuit at the turn of the last century, Nesteroff introduces the first stand-up comedian—an emcee who abandoned physical shtick for straight jokes. After the repeal of Prohibition, Mafia-run supper clubs replaced speakeasies, and mobsters replaced vaudeville impresarios as the comedian’s primary employer. In the 1950s, the late-night talk show brought stand-up to a wide public, while Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, and Jonathan Winters attacked conformity and staged a comedy rebellion in coffeehouses. From comedy’s part in the Civil Rights movement and the social upheaval of the late 1960s, to the first comedy clubs of the 1970s and the cocaine-fueled comedy boom of the 1980s,The Comediansculminates with a new era of media-driven celebrity in the twenty-first century. On today's show we talk to Yael Kohen, a contributing editor to Marie Claire and author of the book We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy. Starting with Phyllis Diller, Elaine May and Joan Rivers, We Killed goes back through the last 60 years of comedy history and restores the forgotten and minimized stories of women in comedy.A few weeks ago, Yael came over to the Manhattan Wrestling Team apartment to discuss her book, as well as some larger questions dealing with gender and comedy. Also, marvel at Mark and Andy's pure male privilege-induced stupidity! Subscribe in iTunes, and follow Andy on Twitter @WrestlingTeam!
Of the many fields in which gender equality has been a long time coming, comedy might not seem as important as, say, high political office or corporate captaincy or astronaut-hood. But it would be a mistake to underestimate the power and centrality of humor in modern-day America. The fact that comedy – especially stand-up – was until recently considered mostly a guy's game, and the speed with which funny women have closed the gap in the last couple of decades is worth pondering. Why the disparity in the first place? What changed, and why does it matter? I spoke to Yael Kohen, author of the recent oral history "We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy."

25 years ago Comedian Tommy Moore "The Professor of Fun" was told that he might never stand on a stage again. Since then he's done over 3,500 shows speeches, and seminars at Comedy Clubs, Casinos, Cruise Ships, Colleges, Corporations, Churches, Synagogues, Resort Hotels, and on Radio & TV. He's headline over 350 times at Caesars' Resort Hotels, and opened for Dionne Warwick, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, The Platters, The Coasters, Robert Goulet, The Dovells, Jay & the Americans and many more in concert. He's given his "Laugh Away The Stress" lectures to companies like AT&T, Dupont, American Express, and SONY. He taught comedy courses, including The History of American Comedy at Philadelphia's Temple University, written for MAD Magazine, toured with the USO, written a newspaper column "Comedy Corner" for eleven years, and through it all worked with and met some of the biggest super-star comedians in America. His act is a combination of jokes, props, magic tricks (that never work), audience participation, improv, and even sing-a-long! Always a proponent of "clean comedy" the mission statement of his act is to "Use humor to Entertain, Inform, Uplift, and Heal"...and the same can be said about his book. It's a motivational self-help book about the important things in life, (and how to stay happy in tough times), as seen through the eyes of some great comedians.
