Welcome to the first episode of our summer series of chats where Andrew catches up with filmmakers and creatives who are behind some of the years best films. From Saturday Night, to Lee, to We Live in Time, and Australia's own Memoir of a Snail, we've got some great film discussions to keep you going over this festive break.First off the rank is a chat with two of the creatives behind Saturday Night, the comedy retelling of the first night of Saturday Night Live. In it, we follow a young Lorne Michaels, played by Golden Globe nominee Gabrielle LaBelle, who attempts to wrangle an unwieldly and chaotic cast of comedians from Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), to Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt), to George Carlin (Matthew Rhys), to Jim Belushi (Matt Wood), and Rosie Shuster (Rachel Sennott), plus many more. What eventuates is a slightly manic, utterly frenetic, yet extremely captivating almost real time night of comedy and chaos leading up to that iconic opening sentence 'Live from New York...' In the following chats, I talk with Gabriel LaBelle about how he came to work on Saturday Night, how he has become an almost surrogate historian of American pop culture with his work on The Fabelmans and now Saturday Night, and how he managed to maintain a level of comedy on screen. After my chat with Gabriel, I talk with writer-director Jason Reitman about bringing this all together. I kick off the conversation by confessing how much of a die-hard Young Adult fan I am, alongside the value of physical media, before we flow into talking about creating an energetic vibe on set with a live score by Jon Batiste, plus much more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We return from our brief hiatus with our most in-depth episode yet, culled from five hours of discussions recorded over a period of several months with William Paul, author of the essential critical study Ernst Lubitsch's American Comedy. We discuss Paul's friendship with frequent Lubitsch collaborator Samson Raphaelson, Raphaelson's sometimes-harsh retrospective criticism of his own work, the linguistic tics that unite Lubitsch's filmography, their methods of adapting obscure Hungarian plays, Raphaelson's recollections of Alfred Hitchcock's very different working methods, and Suspicion's shocking alternate ending. Later on, we discuss the neuroscientific mechanisms of comedy, the biological purpose of laughter, the relationship of To Be Or Not To Be and the idea of “passing”, and engage in some record-correction as to whether or not the film was as controversial as is widely believed. Edited by Brennen King and Eden Cote-Foster. We have a Discord! Listen on: Apple Podcasts | Spotify NEXT WEEK: Dara and Ryan Jaffe join us for the first of two discussions on To Be Or Not To Be For information as to where to find this film, check out our resources page. It's easy to listen to the news and conclude that we have never been more gripped by the so-called “Culture Wars.” But Kliph Nesteroff argues just the opposite: today's conflict isn't a fluke, it's part of a long history of conflict, controversy and recrimination. Canadian comic Kliph Nesteroff is, according to the New York Times, the “premier popular historian of comedy.” He has authored two books since starting out as a stand-up comic, including “The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy” and “We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans and Comedy.” His work has been praised by comedy legends from Gilbert Gottfried to Mel Brooks to Norm Macdonald. His forthcoming third book is titled “Outrageous: A History of Showbiz and the Culture Wars.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Perhaps at no other time in modern history has comedy been such a big draw, with superstar comedians selling out venues as big as the ones that popstars can conquer. But at the same time, it seems that comedy is itself in peril, as more and more jokes, and the people who tell them, get cancelled. So where is the world of comedy at in 2023? EPISODE 1877: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Kliph Nesteroff, author of OUTRAGEOUS, about the history of American showbiz and its perennial culture warsKliph Nesteroff was born and raised in a pacifist community in rural British Columbia. After being permanently expelled from high school for the content of a speech he delivered during a campaign for school president, he moved to Toronto and started performing stand-up comedy. Influenced by the Beat Generation, punk rock music, and his anti-war upbringing, Nesteroff primarily performed in underground bars, punk rock clubs, and alternative comedy venues. He quickly developed a cult following for the combative, insult-comic character Shecky Grey, which landed him on the cover of several Canadian free weeklies. After eight years of stand-up, Nesteroff became an advocate for the homeless, the mentally ill, and the drug addicted, accepting a position in an experimental clinic that nursed addicts with life threatening infections back to health. While working night shifts at the clinic, Nesteroff spent much of his time writing about stand-up comics from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, focusing on the mafia-run nightclubs that used to employ comedians. The articles were frequently published by the web-magazine of free form radio station WFMU. In 2011, Marc Maron began talking about Nesteroff's articles on several episodes of his WTF podcast, eventually extending an invitation to Nesteroff to appear on his program. After a 2012 appearance on WTF with Marc Maron, Nesteroff got a book deal with Grove Press to write the definitive history of 20th Century American stand-up. Released in 2015, The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy became a best-selling book and led to a television career. Nesteroff is a frequent talking head on countless programs and documentary films about comedy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.
Dean Obeidallah, comedian and co-founder of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival and host of "The Dean Obeidallah Show" on SiriusXM radio, talks about the New York Arab American Comedy Festival 20th anniversary tour and finding ways to laugh in tough times, from the festival's founding in the wake of 9/11 to the conflicts today.
"Black people are the roots of American style comedy." As comedy month at theGrio comes to a close, Michael Harriot explains the history of comedy and the roles enslaved people played in making it what it is today. The Greeks are credited with creating the art form, but their version of humor is not what we enjoy today. Instead, that style was developed by enslaved people who used laughter to cope with their oppression.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Standup comedy is under attack, figuratively and literally. In the past few months, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were both physically assaulted on stage. And with increasing calls to silence offensive comics, more attacks are likely. But why should you, good citizen, care? Why should you stand up for a bunch of degenerates who just want to tell dirty jokes? It's because offensive comedy has a long history in America of shining light on issues that "good" people would rather just ignore. From Lenny Bruce to George Carlin to Richard Pryor to—yes—Andrew Dice Clay, offensive comics have a unique ability to get us talking about subjects that make us uncomfortable. And it's only through this openness that we're able to question premises, traditions, and biases, and decide whether change is necessary. Offensive comedy matters, and it deserves protecting. “My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.” -Charlie Hill, comedian and member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. (RE-RELEASE) In this week's episode, Julie and Eve talk to comedian, writer, and actor Adrianne Chalepah and comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff about Native Americans and comedy. In her conversation with Eve and Julie, Adrianne describes how before becoming a professional comedian, she was kicked out of public school for being a class clown and then sent to a U.S. government-run boarding school for Native American children. She also discusses whether the increasing success of Native American comedians like herself and others is indicative of lasting change. Kliph also shares stories about Charlie Hill, the first Native American comedian to appear on network television and how he revolutionized opportunities for Native American comedians. (This episode was originally released on 9/2/21.) An enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, Adrianne Chalepah has been a stand-up comedian for more than a decade. She's the founder of the indigenous femme comedy troupe, Ladies of Native Comedy, and she plays the role of Shannon Diabo on Peacock's hit show “Rutherford Falls.” Kliph Nesteroff was a stand-up comic for eight years. He's the author of The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy and, most recently, We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy. Ever since I was a little kid Ice Cube was always in the house. I remember seeing Cubes "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" album (cassette tape) on the seat of my dads ugly old rusted Subaru. What always stood out to me about that album was the look on Ice Cubes face. When you think about Hip Hop Culture and you think, great music with a solid message and that's what O'Shea Jackson SR (Ice Cube) has been doing for the past 20+ years!Rather it be his hard hitting records like "Why We Thugs" or his light fun records like "Drop Girl" ft. Redfoo and 2Chainz, Cube is an artist that isn't afraid to be him at all times. This is also true for the films that Cube has been in as well. The first movie I ever seen Ice Cube in was a 1995 film called 'Higher Learning' starring Omar Epps, Laurence Fishburne, Tyra Banks and a plethora of other stars. This Drama really touched on racism within America and as a child I learned that hate comes from either misunderstandings or the lack of wanting to understand the next person. There is a lot to unpack when it comes to that topic and I know you didn't come here for that lol. The next film I remember from Cube was Friday! Another 1995 film except this one was no Drama, rather an American Comedy treasure! So, when Erockalypze gave me the word that I would be leading the Ice Cube Interview it was only natural that my stomach turned and my face got hot, the pressure was on. I never get nervous when talking with, well, anyone, but when I started to think about the career and person that O'Shea "Ice Cube" Jackson is, I got excited, not nervous but excited. I finally got the opportunity to talk to him about music, life, influences and the future. Obviously there are hundreds of other questions I would have loved to ask him but I didn't want to take up his whole morning. What question would you ask Cube if you had the chance?Artist; Ice CubeHost: DreRawkaRadio Show: Unrestricted w/ Drerawka 3PM-7PM | M-F
Ever since I was a little kid Ice Cube was always in the house. I remember seeing Cubes "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" album (cassette tape) on the seat of my dads ugly old rusted Subaru. It is the penultimate episode of season one for your hosts Teebs and KidPhoenix. We've all had a lot of laughs -- mostly with the hosts at their own expenses. Where does that charm... that wit... that skill for the chucks come from? Quite simply put, your favorite duo had to watch a lot of comedians growing up. They watched comedians of all types, but the African-American comedian is one that is very special to both Teebs and KidPhoenix. In the history of African-American comedy, many people have held the title at one time or another throughout the decades as the undisputed African-American comedy champion. Today, your hosts go through some of that history from 1970 until present day and give their opinions for the best of the best in the decades that they've been on this earth. This week we're listening to a replay of one of our highest rated shows. It's from July of 2017. We meet Tony Butala and you'll know who he is when I rattle off a few of their hits: The Way You Look Tonight, Hurts So Bad, Goin' Outa My Head/ Can't Take My Eyes Off of You. Tony's the only original member left of the Lettermen. And recently, TV legend and film star Dick Van Dyke became the first ever recipient of the Red Skelton America's Clown Award. We're going to hear about that and more from our first guest, Anne Pratt, the Executive Director of the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy.

On today's show we talk to Yael Kohen, a contributing editor to Marie Claire and author of the book We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy. Starting with Phyllis Diller, Elaine May and Joan Rivers, We Killed goes back through the last 60 years of comedy history and restores the forgotten and minimized stories of women in comedy.A few weeks ago, Yael came over to the Manhattan Wrestling Team apartment to discuss her book, as well as some larger questions dealing with gender and comedy. Also, marvel at Mark and Andy's pure male privilege-induced stupidity! Subscribe in iTunes, and follow Andy on Twitter @WrestlingTeam!
Of the many fields in which gender equality has been a long time coming, comedy might not seem as important as, say, high political office or corporate captaincy or astronaut-hood. But it would be a mistake to underestimate the power and centrality of humor in modern-day America. The fact that comedy – especially stand-up – was until recently considered mostly a guy's game, and the speed with which funny women have closed the gap in the last couple of decades is worth pondering. Why the disparity in the first place? What changed, and why does it matter? I spoke to Yael Kohen, author of the recent oral history "We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy."
