Hi friends, Let's get existential. Billie Eilish has dropped a new album but people on the Internet are being cruel (*insert Leave Billie Alone meme*). One of her songs has stuck out to us and leads us into a conversation around work fulfillment and optimising ourselves as brands. Jas references her article for Fashion Journal titled ‘Why The That Girl TikTok Trend Is More Sinister Than It Seems' and we read from Laura Pitcher's article for iD titled ‘Girl Boss culture Isn't Dead It's Rebranded As “That Girl” Now'. You'll hear this TikTok as well as a snippet of Flex Mami from A1: The Show podcast.American rapper DaBaby made homophobic remarks on stage in Miami this week proving that decades later stigma around the HIV/ Aids crisis has been passed down through generations. Finally, we have two stellar recommendations, both critiquing capitalism. Isabelle Truman reads from her piece Eat The Rich? It'll Cost You – How Anti-Capitalism Has Been Sold Back To Us for the newly launched Refinery29 Australia while Genevive Phelan reads us a snippet from her article, Why I Don't Think There's Such A Thing As A Dream Job Anymore for Fashion Journal. Thanks again to Celebration Nation, a hilarious Aussie web series about the woes, friendships and mess of retail life. Watch it for free on Youtube here. Katie Zhou created our fab new cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. Courtney Carver of Be More With Less tells us why she doesn't save journals or other sentimental items. Episode 1935: Why I Don't Save Journals or Other Sentimental Items by Courtney Carver of Be More With Less Courtney Carver was stopped in her tracks with a scary MS diagnosis after decades of debt, discontent, and trying to do it all. She had to slow down, prioritize her health, and figure out what was really important in her life. She discovered what mattered most by getting rid of everything that didn’t matter at all. In the end it all came down to love and health. She went from a busy, overwhelmed advertising director to spending 2-3 hours every morning taking care of herself, loving her work, and being present and engaged with the people she loves. Her family changed, too. They moved from wanting bigger closets, nicer furniture, and more stuff to downsizing into a 750 sq. ft apartment with no storage. Courtney has written books, courses, and hundreds of articles to help you simplify your life and work so you can focus on what really matters. This episode is a continuation of yesterday’s EPISODE 1229: Why I Don’t Set Goals. It’s a more detailed explanation of the 3 Secrets of why I don’t set goals, and what works when it comes to creating change. For me it began with wanting something different and new, while being tired (and done) with trying to use traditional goal-setting methods to create what I desired. Then one day I heard the words, conscious, grateful, and fearless in my heart. That day I made the decision to make these 3 words my FOCUS for the entire year. In that year I created massive results, incredible change, and experienced the desires of my life becoming my reality. Since that day I haven’t stopped being conscious, grateful, and fearless. I had discovered a new way to create change after making these discoveries. 1. Goal-setting doesn’t work. If you desire incredible change, it’s time to get conscious about what you desire to change, and the commitments you’re making to it. Don’t set GOALS. Make COMMITMENTS. 2. Change is natural, healthy, and easy. Does that sound crazy? Seriously, change isn’t hard. Perhaps it’s because you’re resisting change, or attempting to set goals time and time again, that’s making it seem hard. Chasing a carrot you never seem to catch, while running from a stick that’s chasing you…now that’s HARD. Running from your desires and dreams…that’s even harder! Instead, get your desires and dreams out in front of you. Begin to create the change you desire. When you get on board with change, it becomes easy. Now I didn’t say, it’s without work. However, work is creative energy. When you put your creative energy toward what you’re committed to and you’re “ALL IN”, and in an inspired, creative mode…it’s easy! You’re not the same person you once were. You’re changing every day. You’re either growing up or growing down. You’re either creating constructively or deconstructing. You get to decide. What are you going to put your energy on? The reality is, we were designed to grow, and change. That's why we're not still pooping in our pants, with someone else changing our diapers. Thank God. We’ve learned. We’ve grown. We started walking. We started talking. Change is natural. Resisting change is unnatural. Change is growth. I believe people resist it because they had a bad experience with “goal-setting” in the past. It’s about creating, building, fully experiencing, and growth. Natural. Healthy. Easy. 3. Disagreement causes distraction. A lot of times when it comes to creating the desires of our hearts, we say we don’t have TIME for it. We put it on the back burner of our lives. The more you say this, the less time you’ll have for it. When is the good day? When is the right time for you to go all in with your life? To fully commit and create the changes you say you desire? You say there’s no time or too many distractions… But if you get in AGREEMENT with the desires of your heart and fully commit to creating change the distractions go away because you’re no longer focused on them. You’re all in or you’re not. One sip at a time. One step at a time…fully AGREEING with the desires of your heart. These 3 Secrets can help set you free. Give up the goal-setting. Start committing to what you desire. Stop resisting change, and saying it’s hard. Get on board and change on your terms. Get in agreement with yourself, and your desires. It's the question I'm asked more than any other. In this episode, I get into: Why is it So Hard to Get on the New York Times Bestseller List? How Many Copies Do You Have to Sell to Hit the List? Why I Don't Like to Touch People Dear Peter Kent, Thank you for the best night of human interaction I have had in several years. I appreciate the way you shared yourself with me, and I look forward to knowing you more fully. If we find that we are not suited for each other, let me photograph you for your profile. The one you have online is so obscure that I thought you weighed at least three times what you do and does not show off your gorgeous face. If your photo did you justice, and I am an excellent photographer, you would have to empty your email box several times a day from all the women who would be clamoring for your attention. In fact, I will do this for you even if we do seem to be going somewhere. I am confidant in my ability to satisfy a man and if that were not enough for you, then you deserve to find someone who could. It's not flowers, but I have a problem with cutting a perfectly good rose off of the bush that created it. I would like to hear about Susan. I would also like to know how you came up with your screen name. There would appear to be a story there, or is that a figment of my imagination? I couldn't find any reference of David seeking the assistance of a fortune teller, but the following verse prevents me from utilizing one: Mal:3:5: And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. I don't doubt their ability. I have a certain ability myself and I think all children are born with it, but we crush it out of them by ignoring it, or criticizing them or discounting it as fantasy. When I was racing horses, Jamie was very popular at the track with all the old men as she was very good at picking the winners. When I saw it in her I tried to nurture that ability because it can serve one very well. I find nothing in the Bible that precludes one from having and exercising the ability, but rather the issue seems to be when people choose to seek out a spiritist rather than seeking out God. Jamie and I are very different and yet almost always on the same wave length to the point where it is a common joke between us to ask, "Did I say that out loud?" Sometimes we honestly can't tell. I am particularly good at finding people and empathizing with them. I could almost always get in the car and go straight to where ever Don was. That became increasingly handy when he started getting lost. I could just feel him. I have even found him as he was driving down the Interstate; a moving target! I have had similar experiences with other people who were in grave danger, such as my brother who was lost in a snow storm and a former boyfriend who tired to commit suicide. It was strongest with Don and that is why not finding him has been so hard for me. It's what I do best and I can't do it. I can't feel him. For a couple of days after his disappearance I thought I could, but every where I looked was wrong and then I couldn't feel him any more. The empathy comes in waves. Sometimes when I touch someone, or even just get too close, I feel a surge of emotion that doesn't seem to be mine. That is why I was so intrigued with what you felt when Marsa introduced you to Roseanne. You are obviously receptive to this sort of unexpected input. I can't usually make any sense of it. I passed close to a woman once and was compelled to tell her to stay away from ladders and as you can imagine people don't take that kind of unsolicited advice well. I didn't know why, but I could see a ladder and I could see her weeping, so it seems like the appropriate thing to say at the time. It is not usually even that well defined. It is just a gust of emotion that leaves me gasping for air. The worst experience was one of my volunteers brought his room mate out to Easy Street and introduced us. I politely shook his hand, doubled over and began sobbing uncontrollably. I could not regain my composure and excused myself saying that I was dealing with my own problems, but I knew it was not my life that was causing such turmoil. The volunteer was such an oddball that I figured his room mate was probably some axe murderer or something and I didn't want to know why I felt that way, so I didn't say anything. The next day the room mate was found dead by his own hand; a shot gun blast in the mouth. I just about swore off ever touching anyone again. I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. You’ve probably heard stories from friends, family members, or colleagues who quit a job because of a toxic person - someone who belittles, humiliates, shames, or bullies others. Maybe you’ve even left a job because of such a person. Toxic employees not only take a toll on their coworkers’ emotional psyches but the financial outcomes of their organizations as well. In this SoundPractice episode, Cheryl Toth digs into the issue of handling toxic team members and bosses with Mitchell Kusy, PhD., the author of Why I Don’t Work Here Anymore. Kusy is a professor in the Graduate School of Leadership and Change at Antioch University and an international consultant to leadership. He presents research, evidence-based tactics, and concrete examples of how to restore workplace civility and increase financial performance after toxic employees leave an organization. Dr. Kusy’s latest article will appear in the Sep/Oct issue of Physician Leadership Journal; link below. mitchellkusy@gmail.comwww.mitchellkusy.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-mitch-kusy/ “Six Intentional Ways to Build Teams of Everyday Civility (and Proactively Erode Toxic Behaviors)” Physician Leadership Journal Why I Don’t Work Here Anymore
I guess I’ve been on a bit of a short-story kick lately. After reviewing Susan Minot’s new book, Why I Don’t Write , and rediscovering the lovely, independent little universes of short fiction, I picked up another new collection—Laura van den Berg’s I Hold A Wolf By the Ears —and dove right in. And this one, my friends, is even better.

It’s been three decades since author-playwright Susan Minot has published a collection of short fiction. So perhaps it’s fitting that her new one, which is being released this week, is titled “Why I Don’t Write: And Other Stories.”

When we consider classic Latinx picture books that would qualify as #ownvoices, only a few have been covered on this show. I mean, sure we did Pura Belpre's Perez and Martina a while ago, but let's get a little more contemporary, eh? Today's book premiered in 2000, which means it just barely squeezes in under the 20 year rule for inclusion. Now, granted, we probably should have started with the first book in the series, Chato's Kitchen. The only problem with that is (A) It's not as good and (B) Betsy couldn't find it on the library shelf and grabbed this instead. Eh. That's okay. Show Notes: Susan Guevara's vision for this book goes far and beyond anything Soto could have included in the text. Her interpretation covers a wide swath of influences and references, making it one of the most interesting picture book reads out there. Read the transcript of her interview or listen to it on Teachingbooks.net here: https://www.teachingbooks.net/book_reading.cgi?id=11932&a=1 If you'd like to read Gary Soto's essay "Why I Don't Write Children's Literature", you can find it here: https://muse.jhu.edu/book/38019 If you'd like to see the Spanish version of the Weston Woods video of this book, you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vix5GUph2JY For the full Show Notes, please visit: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2020/08/03/fuse-8-n-kate-chato-and-the-party-animals-by-gary-soto-ill-susan-guevara/

Welcome to another week of our Friday Jam session. This is always one of the highlights of my week. I love spending some time with some awesome people and answering some great questions. If you want to be a part of our Take Action Crew, we go live every single Friday where you can ask me any questions you have about starting your business. To join us, head over to takeactioncrew.com to sign up for free. Let’s dive right into today’s session. Valuable Advertising and Affiliate Info This week I had a bunch of questions related to ads and affiliate links and when is the best time to use them. I'm excited to answer a few of those today, and hopefully, you'll find my answers helpful. When to Apply for Affiliate or Ad Programs Don't apply too early. You need to focus on getting traffic before you can even consider monetizing your site. Once you get there, you'll have plenty of options. We didn't turn on ads until we had 18,000 visitors to our site for one of the brands we're working on. We do have a few affiliates but no ad networks. You'll need at least 10,000 visitors to your site to qualify for an ad network. Don’t talk about monetization until you have traffic. Start out by writing a few pieces of content, including reviews or comparisons, where you can go back in later and add affiliate links when you're ready. Just get the content written now, and you can do the rest in the future. Should I Consider Advertising on My Website Yes, advertising is great. Over on brandcreators.com, I'm currency only offering private offerings. Our playbook, checklist, and signups for Brand Creators when registration is open again in July. I'm not selling anything else on my site. We do have a resources page with all the products that we use that link to affiliate programs. If you're driving traffic to your site to sell your own stuff, I recommend limiting your advertising to other companies. You'll just need to pick and choose what to include. On a side note, I do run ads on a couple of our other sites. Just be sure that any ads you include on your site are of interest to your visitors. In regards to affiliate links, you can have a few on your site, and once the traffic is there, people will see the. Keep in mind that the benefits of affiliate links just aren't there when you only have a few thousand-page views. Instead, focus on creating content and wait to get steady traffic to worry about affiliates. How to Get The Most Out of Your Blog When you’re getting ready to start a new website or blog, it can be overwhelming. This week I answered a few questions that I hope will help make it easier to get started. What Elements to Include on Your Homepage Let people know immediately that they’ve come to the right place. Answer the questions they’re looking to have answered. Always have a lead magnet front and center but also make sure they know they are in the right place and not just in an eCommerce store, so it’s not a turn-off. Ask yourself what your visitors are trying to achieve and tell them right up front how you can help. Keep your messaging on brand which will help detract people who aren’t ready to hear your message or not apart of our target market. Why You Should Integrate Your Online Store to Your New Blog Include a tab on your blog that includes access to your shop. Integrate the two as soon as possible, especially if they are in the same niche and go hand in hand. You can always have a separate Shopify store and use a subdomain, so it still looks like it’s all apart of the same website. Post Blog Content As Soon As Your Website is Up and Running Who is seeing your unpolished blog if you don’t feel like it’s ready? Just start publishing blog posts, and you can make changes to your site later. There will always be things you want to change and fix. But to an average person, they’re going to look past those things. Just start getting it running so you can monetize sooner. You won’t get any traffic if you don’t publish any content. There’s no better time like the present to get started. How To Come Up With New Blog Content What are the five questions your market is asking right now? Write “how to” articles that answer these common questions. They are easy to answer and are asked often. Create a content tree where you have the main content topic you’ll focus on and branch off from there. Head over to Google and use the autofill feature to see what is being searched for often in your niche and what keywords people are using. Best Ways to Sell Digital Courses or E-books on your site. You’ll need to create a sales funnel on your site. It can be as simple as creating a landing page in Convertkit or Gumroad. Keep it simple. Build an email list and hop on social to bring people to your website where they can view your digital course or e-book. How to Structure an Interview I start by asking questions that you, as the listener, will benefit from. Know your audience and what they would want to know. Make sure the person you’re interviewing feels comfortable. When I interview, I only have a couple of points, including their back store. I also ask a few of the questions, like what did they do when they had a business venture fail. So many people don’t typically share their failures, and I think it’s so important for my listeners to hear about how successful people overcame rejection and discouragement. When I interview, I want to know what people do on the days that are bad. And how they kept pushing through. Get really raw and real. Get questions answered that they aren’t usually asked. Live Streaming & Video Editing Tips I’ve had a lot of questions about live streaming during the past few weeks and am excited to touch on a few of those today. Live Streaming Videos on Multiple Platforms In the beginning, you need to get comfortable and make it easy. Start broadcasting to one platform. You can always add another platform at a later date. The goal is to get a few people watching who you can engage with. Even if you don’t have anyone watching in the beginning, still get started and don’t overthink think it. Live streams are not easily searchable on Facebook. Consider streaming to YouTube because it’s saved on the site and makes it super easy for people to search for those videos at a later date. You can always take your YouTube video and upload it to Facebook. It’ll perform better when you upload it directly to Facebook. Should I Go Live & Stick With The Same Time Every Week When you do something live there is less structure and it becomes more natural. Just get started and know what you’re going to do upfront. Commit to yourself and show up the same time every week. This will help people look forward to joining and know when to expect they’ll hear from you. Consider answering questions that show you are an authority in your market. How to Crop Videos for YouTube ScreenFlow is great for Mac users. You can zoom in and even slow zoom on different parts of your video. If you’re just starting out consider going to Fiveer and hiring out someone to edit your videos for you! It’s pretty cheap to find someone and will save you lots of time from having to do it yourself if you have a lot going on. Too Many Plugins Will Slow Down Your Site Keep your website very light so it runs faster. You don’t need a bunch of plugins to get started. If your site is slow people won’t stick around. I recommend starting out with just a couple of plugins like Yoast and an optimization plugin that compresses images. Always check to see how your site works on mobile. Why I Don’t Charge More for My Products I’ve had a lot of questions about why my products are so affordable. In particular, my Brand Creators Playbook. I use this all the time within Brand Creators. I only charge $4.99 for the playbook. If you buy my book, it shows that you are interested in my content and is a great lead magnet. I also want to help you succeed, and I can reach more people if I charge less. If you purchase the playbook, I do off a market selection class, but I don’t advertise to anyone else. I actually go in and show you how to go through the process to find if a market is good and show some examples of some that should be avoided. My goal is to give people enough content and information to get them started. And if they’re interested they can join Brand Creators when it opens again in July. Always give people as much value as you can and don’t be afraid of giving too much. The goal is to attract the right people. Thanks For Tuning In! I hope you enjoyed this week’s Friday jam session. Head over to takeactioncrew.com to join for free. We go live every Friday at 10 am when I answer all your questions. Thanks for being here. Remember, I’m here for you, I believe in you and am rooting for you! It’s time for you to take action and go rock your brand! Hello my Quarantini's !! Tonight we talk about a bunch of random stuff!! Would you expect anything else though ?!!! We first start talking about being a millennial and we read some "dark humor" tweets about how much stuff millennial's have gone through. Next, we dive into another ghost interaction I had this week, and we Google why ghosts flicker lights!!! Then the next two topics are health related... we talk about before and after photos and if that's still a thing or not, and finally we talk intermittent fasting !! The very last thing we chat about is murder hornets and why they are IN and MISS RONA IS OUT. Honestly, I was drinking my quarantini throughout this whole episode, and I'm wondering if anything I said makes sense.... just kidding. The Basic 'Problem' of Representation/Intentionality/Semantics/etcWe take brain states and utterances and paintings and to represent things. What’s that about?Philosophers throw around a lot of terms/jargon when talking about this basic phenomenon:RepresentationIntentionalitySemanticsMeaningContentAboutness(many more!)The basic idea: there are thinkers/reasoners in who communicate to one another, and can represent the world as one way rather than another, to both themselves (e.g. in deliberative thought) and others (e.g. in speech). What's all this business about interpreting symbols/signals to mean one thing rather than another? What distinguishes a cognitive system that truly represents the world, and cognitive systems (if they can be called that) that just push electrical signals around?Searle's SetupWhat is Searle trying to show? He wants to show that running a computer program can’t be sufficient for having a mind/thinking. (Perhaps it is necessary).Syntax vs. Semantics“It is essential to our conception of a digital computer that its operations can be specified purely formally; that is, we specify the steps in the operation of the computer in terms of abstract symbols.” (670)“But the symbols have no meaning; they have no semantic content; they are not about anything. They have to be specified purely in terms of their formal or syntactical structure.” (670)Duplication vs. Simulation“Those features [consciousness, thoughts, feelings, emotions], by definition, the computer is unable to duplicate however powerful may be its ability to simulate. ...No simulation ever constitutes duplication.” (673)“...nobody supposes that the computer simulation is actually the real thing; no one supposes that a computer simulation of a storm will leave us all wet, or a computer simulation of a fire is likely to burn the house down.” (673)The Chinese Room Thought Experiment“Suppose I’m locked in a room and suppose that I’m given a large batch of Chinese writing.” He is given batches of Chinese writing and batches of ‘rules’ which “instruct me how I am to give back certain Chinese symbols with certain sorts of shapes in response”.“From the external point of view...the answers to the Chinese questions and the English questions are equally good. But in the Chinese case, unlike the English case, I produce the answers by manipulating uninterpreted formal symbols. As far as the Chinese is concerned, I simply behave like a computer.”(Above two quotes come from an earlier version of this argument, presented in "Minds, Brains and Computers")The Point: The room, as a whole, spits out meaningful Chinese sentences. But the man does notunderstand Chinese.“...You behave exactly as if you understand Chinese, but all the same you don’t understand a word of Chinese. But if going through the appropriate computer program for understanding Chinese is not enough to give you an understanding of Chinese, then it is not enough to give any other digital computer an understanding of Chinese.” (671)The Systems Reply: There’s an important disanalogy: the man ought not be compared to the computer since the computer is analogous to the whole system—the rules books, the data banks of Chinese symbols, etc. The man is more like the CPU, where the rule book is like the program stored in memory. So perhaps the whole system does understand Chinese.Searle’s Response: My point applies even if the man applies the rules to internal, memorized rule books. Neither the system nor the man understands Chinese. An Additional Reply: There are actually two ‘programs’ running on the same ‘hardware’, the man. There are really two minds instantiated in the man. The Chinese program, instantiated in the man, understands Chinese, but the man does not. And the English program certainly doesn’t understand Chinese. Why I Don't Like Searle's 'Argument'1. The unearned syntax/semantics cudgelWait--is this even an argument?Basic problem: beats you over the head with “it’s mere syntax!” without really providing a positive account of what semantic content is, and why that semantic content has to be something over and above pure syntax.Searle makes super clear that he believes you can't successfully reduce semantic truths to 'mere' syntactical truths, but I don't see much of an attempt to argue this point, rather than repeat the same basic idea over and over again. If there's something more to the view than "isn't it obvious!", then he didn't include that reasoning here. Besides, this is an actively debated issue!2. The proposed 'solution' doesn't really make sense? The problem, remember: we need an ingredient over and above purely syntactical operations to imbue a system with real intentionality.Searle's ultimate suggestion: Our biological makeup must play that role?Basic problem: Wait, what? How? That is, what makes moist computers any better off intentionality-wise than functionally similar system made of less moist material? Non sequitor.3. Characterizes the computer model of the mind uncharitablySearle leans into the familiar “digital computer” sense of “computer model...”, but that's not really warranted, given what proponents of that model actually believe. The charitable thing he could have said: there’s a sense of computation which isn’t tied to a specific artifact, but to a broader idea of information-processing and symbol manipulation as part of an individual system's strategy for acting upon the world and making decisions.4. Stylistically: sloppy, blustery, arrogant, dismissive...Taking philosophy seriously means taking your own temperament when reasoning seriously. And the right temperament is not the one on display in this paper.

This episode is a continuation of yesterday’s EPISODE 886: Why I Don’t Set Goals. "I don’t ask everyone to hunt—I realize it’s not a likely reality. But I do hope that those who don’t hunt can understand why I pursue this connection to nature and my food. My experience and respect for death grounds me in what it means to live. Knowing the gravity of mortality is an expansion of the mind, and it provides a moral compass for who I want to be: A respectful participant in nature, as opposed to one who takes and offers nothing in return. "— Brad Luttrell Today is something different. There’s no guest. Today, in my first podcast of 2020, I am sharing something that I’ve put a lot of work into describing. As you’ll hear, it’s a response to a magazine article I read this fall, which rattled me. The more I thought about this perverse interpretation of hunting, the more I wanted to provide a response. I was hopeful their team would be interested in providing a perspective from someone who has actually hunted in the last two decades and knows the real culture. They never responded. I'm not necessarily surprised in the lack of response. I worked in journalism briefly and I get it. They hear from a lot of people. But their mission on their website claims a desire to "show the spots that make the South a far better place than most folks think it is." And I think this column fell far short of that goal. Hunting is far more than what outsiders like him think it is. And I was hopeful to showcase a rebuttal in the magazine, but alas, here we are. Months have gone by with no progress. I did end my communication with them by inviting the editor and the author out to hunt with me. I believe such a trip would leave them disappointed in the decision to run the original column, if not actually embarrassed about how dead wrong it was. Writers, photographers and content creators have important jobs. Documentary work is more than capturing a single moment. As conflict photographer James Nachtwey says about himself, this is about being a witness to moments in history. I’m sure the publication’s intentions were good. This was simply an uninformed decision. But while reviewing people celebrating it on Twitter, it became clear to me that this was not being a good witness for those who can’t see. And while my work may never reach them, this is my effort to bring some insight into why hunting brings out the the best version of me. I hope you enjoy.
