Discover how to build trust, improve workplace harmony, and foster romantic relationships through King's insightful equations. Building trust is fundamental to any strong relationship, and Patrick King offers a straightforward formula to achieve this: Trustworthiness = Consistency x Reliability / Number of Betrayals. This emphasizes the importance of being consistent and reliable while minimizing betrayals to maintain and build trust. In the workplace, harmony is crucial for productivity and job satisfaction. King's formula for workplace harmony is Respect x Cooperation / Conflicts + Ego. By fostering respect and cooperation and reducing conflicts and ego clashes, a more harmonious and productive work environment can be created. For romantic relationships, King provides a more nuanced formula: Common Interest x Physical Attraction x Emotional Connection to the Power of Adaptability. Our culture tends to make exercise all about burning calories and losing weight, which aren't very good motivators for sticking with it long-term. When we approach exercise from a mindset of shame and punishment, it actually makes us NOT want to do it.   However, if we shift our reasons for moving our bodies it can open the door to a much more peaceful and enjoyable relationship with exercise. In this episode I'm going to be sharing 3 strategies to help you move away from using calories, weight and appearance as your motives, so that you can explore ways of moving your body that you might not have ever considered before.    I'm also introducing a new segment into the podcast called Wellness Woo, where I do a quick breakdown of something that diet and wellness culture tell us we should do for our “health” that's not evidence-based or legit. It's going to be a fun way to learn the history of some of the whacky wellness stuff we hear all the time. Herman Pontzer is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University and Associate Research Professor of Global Health at the Duke Global Health Institute. He is an internationally recognized researcher in human energetics and evolution. Over two decades of research in the field and laboratory, Dr. Pontzer has conducted pathbreaking studies across a range of settings, including fieldwork with Hadza hunter-gatherers in northern Tanzania, fieldwork on chimpanzee ecology in the rainforests of Uganda, and metabolic measurements of great apes in zoos and sanctuaries around the globe. In our conversation today and in his new book, Burn: The Misunderstood Science of Metabolism, Herman reveals his findings that despite the fact that Hadza men and women get between five and ten times more physical activity every day than most women in the USA or Europe, their total energy expenditure – the number of calories they burn – is the same. DNA and body type. Exercise does not increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day for men and 2,400 calories for women, no matter our activity level. In fact, our metabolism – the way our body burns energy – affects every aspect of our biology from our pace of growth, reproduction, and aging to our weight and health. If we burn more energy in one area, our bodies will adjust by spending less energy in another. But all this doesn't mean that you shouldn't exercise. Far from it. We usually think about our daily movement and calorie burn in terms of our workouts.  How often we workout, what types of workouts, how intensely… but the truth is…. we burn more calories throughout the day than during our actual workout times. We often think of activity as in - did you work out today or not.  But Lindsay thinks we should think about it more like… how much did you move your body today overall. We're talking about enjoyable (not painful) ways to get in some extra movement.  It's not only good for your body and your overall health and longevity… it's so good for your mental health.   Our goal in this episode is to give you lots of ideas of how to sneak in some extra movement so the next time you go to sit to do something… you'll do it while walking or you sit to wait for 20 minutes, you'll consider something active instead. It's so good for you and it's fun!   If you can't make it to the gym- don't count that day as a loss!  You can still get movement in! The benefits are endless- sleep better and feel better and happier! TIPS!! -Wear ankle weights around the house!  (Or out if you dare!) -Focus on the daily - doesn't need this big overall plan. -While your kids do an activity - you do too! -Walk after meals -Lean into days when you have more energy -If you have a desk job, set an alarm and take breaks, walk around.  Or standing desk or balance ball! -Wear running shoes when you can (and clothes!) -Keep supplies handy (weights in your car) -Park farther away -Take the stairs -Short workouts when you can - 50 squats when taking your dog out -Do active weekend activities - go bowling!! Or mini golf! -Walk and talk!! -Play WITH your kids instead of watching them -Adventure on the weekends - hikes etc. Plan ahead of time! -Do something on phone calls -Stretch before bed… so good for flexibly and less likely to raid the pantry! Petland Iowa City shares helpful tips to keep your pet warm in cooler temps & seasons: 1. Monitor Nutrition - When Your Dog Is Shivering, They're Burning Calories 2. Fight Off Dry Skin - Use A Dog Conditioner 3. Add Extra Layers - Sweaters, Jackets & Paw Guard are Excellent Options. If You Are Cold, Your Puppy Is Cold Too! Your pup is a part of the family, and although he enjoys the beauty of nature and spending time outside, it is never recommended that a puppy “lives” outside. If you're cold, your pup is too, and regardless of your pup's breed, spending extended periods of time in frigid weather is not healthy or safe. Even if you were wearing a fur coat, you would not want to spend several hours outside in the cold, and your pup does not want to either. Everything In Moderation Let your fur-ever friend “enjoy” being outside. He loves to burn off extra energy and dash through the snow. And although this is healthy and safe for your pup, it needs to be allowed in moderation. Monitor him while outside, especially in frigid weather. Younger and healthy pups tend to handle these conditions much better than senior pups or pups who have medical issues. Certain breeds with thicker and or double-layered coats, such as Akitas, Bichon Frises, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, tend to better handle cold weather than breeds with thinner coats French Bulldogs, Pomeranians, and Pugs. Regardless of the breed, all dogs will eventually get cold and need a warm shelter. Remember, the purpose of letting your puppy outside is so he can enjoy himself, have fun, and feel good! Known Effects On Pups That Are Left Outside In The Cold Like people, dogs can experience pain and severe medical conditions if left outside in cold weather. These conditions can begin as minor shivering and discomfort and extend all the way to death. It is very important to understand that your pup is a living being, and like a human, can only sustain freezing temperatures for a certain period of time. Below are known issues and symptoms that dogs experience when left outside in freezing weather. Knowing what to look for can save your pup's life. Shivering is a common initial symptom that takes place when a dog is too cold. His body naturally begins to shiver in an effort to stay warm. Although shivering will temporarily help him maintain his body temperature, it is not effective for more than a few minutes. Moaning and howling take place due to discomfort. Essentially, your puppy is in pain from the cold weather, which is affecting his body. Moaning and howling is his way of expressing it and asking for help. Never ignore these early signs as they can quickly lead to very serious issues. Frostbite is a condition/injury to body tissues caused by exposure to extreme cold. This typically affects your dog's nose, paws, and or ears and creates a painful burning sensation. If the affected area is not tended to, the condition can quickly escalate to much more severe health issues. Hypothermia sets in upon the dog's internal body temperature dropping below safe levels. This condition slows your dog's heart rate and breathing down to very unsafe levels, which can lead to neurological problems. Your puppy's kidney functions also rapidly begin to decrease during this health emergency. Essentially, your puppy is beginning to freeze to death. If not immediately treated, your dog can fall into a coma, which often leads to permanent health issues and even death. Help Your Pup Stay Warm! Puppy coats, jackets, and boots add an extra layer of insulation for your dog. I want to be able to swim longer and stronger.   Too Extreme - When I go to the cottage with my family we like to take the boat out and go wakeboarding, tubing, and generally have fun on the water. It tends to burn for a few days afterward so we’re definitely getting some good arm exercise - but how much is too much? It’s a lot of fun but I’m worried about accidentally injuring myself in the process. When do I know to stop?   Born to Swim - Is swimming any good for burning calories and losing weight, or is it better for getting stronger muscles? All this to be said you can’t just say strength training or cardiovascular training burns more calories than the other because it depends on a lot of factors.It depends how high your heart rate goes, when you strength train it depends how long your breaks are, it depends if you do compound movements or isolated ones, it depends if you go to your max. If you’re doing cardiovascular training it depends how much resistance there is, I mean are you biking up the hill or down it?
