One is a cult classic, one is a streamer remake. While they have similar backbones, the original Road House (1989) delivers more than the new version, Road House (2024), even with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. The nostalgia play is strong with Patrick Swayze, but would anyone under the age of 30 enjoy this movie? In this episode of the Ready Yet Podcast, my guest is Dr. Kevin Gazzara, who shares his journey from a 29-year corporate career at Siemens and Intel to founding Magna Leadership Solutions, a consulting firm. Listen in as we discuss the importance of being prepared before making the leap from corporate to entrepreneurship, highlighting the 'six Ps' necessary for success: Provisions, Product, Presence, People, Publication, and Persistence. Our conversation also emphasizes the value of having a mentor, explains consulting versus coaching, and delves into the power of social media presence, and the strategic advantage of publishing a book. GUEST RESOURCEShttps://magnaleadership.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kevingazzarahttps://www.facebook.com/MagnaLeadershiphttps://www.youtube.com/user/Magnaleaderhiphttps://twitter.com/doctorkevin As a service based professional, you want to be out there attracting more people to your business, making more money and helping more people. But how are you supposed to get out there when you're stuck inside the daily grind of your business already out of hours in the day and days in the week? Good news. The solution is not about doing more work. It's about combining the superpower of an authentic personal brand out in front of a scalable self managing business.
Having grown up in PA, Dr. Kevin Gazzara had a propensity for taking things apart and putting them back together, it was a natural curiosity that drove him. He found himself organizing events for his friends. And what do you get when you have a curious kid who likes to organize? A focus on business and engineering. After decades with Intel and other organizations, Kevin took to entrepreneurship. He became an executive coach, putting his experience to great use. His focus: productivity and building teams. He believes in action learning, engaging those he teaches to have immediate, practical impact. He looks at six key areas: Behavioral styles Communication and conflict Values and guiding people to their natural place of Flow Critical Thinking (so absent and so important these days) Leadership Styles Motivation & Engagement - here, he notes that you cannot motivate someone else. You can create the circumstances or environment that helps them to feel motivated. Pain Points in most organizations include: Retention (and Kevin notes that this starts with hiring correctly) Motivation (and here, Kevin suggests asking a couple of questions so that rewards are unique to the individual - I'd add that this crosses over to family, as well) What three things might you like as recognition (surprise, when you really dig, you'll find it's not money as #1) How do you like that delivered, publicly or privately? And a caution NOT to overuse recognition. Leadership and management lessons can cross over to parenting if you think about it. I like to build that bridge. We want to build upon values and create autonomy by building mastery and purpose. Along the way, there's accountability. The lessons here are great for everyone, from leaders to family members! We celebrate Ben Gazzara - sort of. First up is "Saint Jack" (1979), a wonderful Peter Bogdanovich film that seems to be written for Gazzara. The story of an American wanting nothing more than to open a brothel in Singapore. We loved this film and agree that it is as underrated as they come. Our second feature is not really a Ben Gazzara film, but he's in it for a brief time. David Mamet's "The Spanish Prisoner" (1997) is another con-artist yarn that is boring, miscast and extremely predictable. Next, chess films with "Fresh" (1994) and "Critical Thinking" (2020).Have your own recommendations? Contact the show:24theroadshow@gmail.com

What You'll Learn From This Episode:The real problem that we're solving is we're stopping the high turnover and improving the low level of employee engagementWhy the tendency to just throw money at the workforce is usually a good short term fix but it really makes the problem worse in the long term. Why all tasks are not created equally and do not have the same bottom line value.Related Links and Resources:Kevin's Gift to you:The Task Quotient (TQ) AssessmentGet yours here:https://magnaleader.co/GIFTSummary:Dr. Kevin Gazzara is an ICF certified coach, and a certified Positive Intelligence (PQ) Mental Fitness coach. “You have to look at everything as a system. You have to have all of your elements in place,” explains Dr. Kevin Gazzara, Founder and Senior Partner of Magna Leadership Solutions. Dr. Kevin spent 30 years in the corporate world before retiring and starting his new career helping businesses better their leaders, increase employee retention, and put systems in place to ensure long term success. Today, he has created the Leading Forward Academy which provides a six month training program that addresses necessary cultural shifts while improving leadership skills. Dr. Kevin shares that he sees two main issues when it comes to the businesses who inquire about his services. The most common issue is with employee retention due to lack of good management and leadership. People are less likely now to stay in a work environment where they do not align with the culture of the organization or their direct management. The other issue he explains, is when companies do not have a problem with retention, but have hit a plateau in their growth. This usually implies a need to further develop the employees that they already have in order to break through and find growth. Dr. Kevin explains that learning is a process and it requires systems to be in place to ensure everything goes smoothly. In order to sustain lasting progress, there must be continual feedback available. In order to make true cultural transformations, employees at the highest levels of your organization must be completely bought in. They must lead by example and see the value in changing the systems that have been in place for so long. When organizations focus on dedicating resources, time, and money to furthering the development of their current employees incredible growth can be achieved. Quotes: “If you don't have really good managers and leaders that will drive people out of the organization. So typically, we get a lot of inquiries where people can't retain their best, people are leaving, and they can't hire new people because of their culture.” (6:44-7:07 | Dr. Kevin) “The key to growth is looking at everything as a system. You have to have all the elements in place. You have to have learning, the opportunity to apply it, and you have to have a feedback mechanism.” (13:12-13:23 | Dr. Kevin) “The one big difference that we find where organizations really kind of screw up is that they see their feedback as a performance tool. And the minute that the feedback system becomes a performance tool, or HR kind of latches on to it, bad things happen. Then people try to figure out ways to work the system and so forth.” (18:51-19:15 | Dr. Kevin) “If you're in an organization, and you're not spending any money, or resources, or time, or focus on developing your individuals, that's the very first thing you need to do.” (21:56-22:07 | Dr. Kevin) “The best leaders are aggressive. They go after the task and they hold people accountable. And they do it in a way that you get the buy-in.” (40:14-40:24 | Dr. Kevin) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about Dr. Kevin Gazzara: Website: magnaleadership.com; Email Kevin at kevin@magnaleadership.com; Positive Intelligence Program: pqtrainingandcoaching.com Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
One of the secrets of getting to “flow” in a work process is to “level the load.“ Not overburdening the process and managing the natural volatility of inputs has a remarkable effect on productivity. My guest, Kevin Gazzara, has insights into how to do this in our brains. Check out our fascinating conversation! Kevin has an undergraduate degree in engineering and business and completed his MBA and doctoral work in Organizational Leadership. Kevin then moved to the technical side when he worked for Transamerica Corporation. He also worked at Intel for 18 years as an Operations Manager and General Manager, and in his last 10 years at Intel, he focused on managing Intel University and the Management Leadership Development, as well as residential programs around the world. Currently, Kevin is a senior partner at Magna Leadership Solutions, a firm that started 15 years ago when he retired from Intel in 2007. Magna Leadership Solutions provide management and leadership programs including the Lean Forward Academy which offers global programs virtually and in person. In addition, he is an ICF (International Coaching Federation) executive coach, and Positive Intelligence coach. KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: Kevin's background before he started Magna Leadership Solutions What made Kevin transition from the technical and business side to the organizational side of the organization? His big leap, moving from engineering to the people side of the business. The difference between leading a technical team and being a leader training teams from all over the company. Kevin's ideas, principles, and how he deals with how other people see and perceive things. Three commandments of leadership What does Kevin do to help other people get deeper knowledge and become more flexible with their approach? Why communication is by far the number one missing leadership practice or competency across the globe. Systems influencing the performance of the team Organizational performance and aligning it to business results Why do organizations obscure the cost of turnover? What managers should do to improve problem-solving. Why managers should balance their employees' workload and how to balance the workload for your brain. KEY TAKEAWAYS No one can do one type of task effectively for extended periods. Changing task types throughout the workday leads to better overall productivity and happier employees. Allowing people control over the types of tasks they perform and when and how long they perform them will allow people to gravitate towards what they love. When you can retain employees, you are always going to get better performance, engagement, and motivation. You can get there by clicking on the subscribe button right in the main navigation. You may be wondering “Why are we talking about Disco songs?” Well, it is because there is a trend of Disco revival songs, also known as Modern Disco songs. These songs include “Take My Breath” by The Weeknd, “Magic” by Kyle Minogue, “Don't Start Now” by Dua Lipa, “Stupid Love” by Lady Gaga, “Treasure”, recently, by Bruno Mars, and even “I Feel Love” by Sam Smith that was popular in the Target commercials. So let us go ahead and get started. I am going to be discussing these by the year they were released. Starting off with a brand new song by ABBA released in 2021 called “Don't Shut Me Down”. Lyrics include…I'm not the same this time around (ooh), I'm fired up, don't shut me down. Another fairly recent song, “Disco Gamma” by Los Charly's Orchestra, released in 2010 is a great instrumental song. Gazzara's song “Can't Hide Love” from 1995, with the lyrics…You can't pretend there's nothing there, Girl, I look in your eyes, I see you care. One of the greatest Funk bands of all time, The Gap Band, released “I Found My Baby” in 1984 with the lyrics…That's why I found my baby, I found my love. This has a perfect theme for a wedding day. “Fresh” by Kool and The Gang in 1984 with lyrics…She's so exciting to me yeah, She's fresh (fresh) exciting, She's so inviting to me yeah. In 1983, PYT which stands for “Pretty Young Thing” by Michael Jackson, is a great dance song to play. “BYOB, Bring Your Own Baby” by Sister Sledge in 1983. You know they will have other songs on this list as well. Just like the next one by The Gap Band, probably their most recognized song on the list, “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” from 1982. Lyrics include…You turn me out, you turn me on, You turned me loose then you turned me wrong, You dropped a bomb on me. One of the greatest Disco songs, and one that you could play for the garter toss, is “It's Raining Men” by The Weather Girls released in 1982. Lyrics for this song include…It's raining men! Amen! I'm gonna go out to run and let myself get, Absolutely soaking wet! Shalamar's “A Night To Remember” in 1982 may be a song you have forgotten about, with the lyrics…Make this a night to remember, Get ready, tonight, Gonna make this a night to remember. One of the top 5 Disco songs of all time, Earth, Wind &Fire's “Let's Groove” from 1981. Lyrics are…Share the spice of life, Baby slice it right, We're gonna groove tonight. “Super Freak” by Rick James in 1981 will have everybody freaking out on the dance floor, and “I'm Coming Out” by Diana Ross from 1980 is a very popular Disco song. Famous lyrics include…I'm coming out. I want the world to know, Got to let it show. Her other song, also released in 1980, is “Upside Down”. George Benson released “Give Me The Night” in 1980 with the lyrics…And if you feel all...

Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Doug and Kevin spoke about how to instill and sustain team motivation. It is not enough for a leader to simply encourage their team; they must also create an atmosphere that inspires them to realize their full potential and share their vision with others. Never forget to strike a balance between organizational performance, which includes attracting and keeping your finest employees and business outcomes. Then you may create a leadership model that provides both of things in a balanced manner. If you are like me you remember watching the Wizard of Oz and young Judy Garland playing the heroine Dorothy from a small time in Kansas. But what if the story was slightly rewritten. The setting is a small Kansas town and it is a couple of businesses that wondering if they should do a merger and a young HR Director by the name of Dora T. Gayle because of a bizarre "twister" of circumstances must now be the one to determine if the merger will work. We get introduced to Glenda Ozborn the CEO of OZ Technologies and some of her staff like Cher Crowe, Timm Mann, and Howard Lee Lyon, and of course Mitchell and his monkey Wingo, who is also known as The "Witchell" or the Wicked VP from the West. The story is fun, but the leadership lessons are even more powerful with every chapter. And on this episode of A New Direction Co-Author Dr. Kevin Gazzara walks through some of the lessons and the fun of the book. The book "The Leader of Oz: Revealing the 101 Secrets of Marvelous Leadership for the 21st Century" is a leadership book like none other. While the story is fun and engaging the lessons are timeless and priceless. What is more about the book is also a leadership assessment that you can measure your strengths in four areas: Brain, Heart, Nerve and Wisdom (I think you catch the OZ references). We begin the show with the most obvious and fundamental leadership dimension and that is of authenticity. And as both Dora T. and Dorothy discovery when we truly discover who we are it is when we truly begin the journey of leadership. Please say thank you to our sponsors! It is there financial support that allows A New Direction to continue growing and getting great authors like Rob Jolles. Also discussed in this section: Alien, Aliens, Alien: Resurrection, Alien vs. Predator, Neil Blompkamp, The Defenders, JJ Abrams, the Blade Runner sequel, James Cameron, Michael Beihn, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Soldier, Walter Hill, David Giler, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, abortion, Obvious Child, The Fly, The Fly 2, Nymphomaniac 2, Denis Villeneuve, Apocalypse Now, Paget Brewster, Ridley Scott, Prometheus, Prisoners, Roger Deakins, Rosemary's Baby, David Peoples, Kurt Russell, and Ghosts of Mars. 0:19:48 - 1:17:23 - Morgan has been going through the work of John Cassavetes: Morgan watched A Woman Under the Influence (1974), directed by Cassavetes, starring Gena Rowands, Peter Falk, and Fred Draper. M: Here's an interview with Gena Rowlands & Cassavetes about ‘Woman Under The Influence' at AFI (of which Cassavetes became a “student” through Fellowships they offered so that he could get funding and crew). Both Morgan and Sean watched The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976, re-released in 1978), directed by Cassavetes, starring Ben Gazarra, Timothy Carey, Seymour Cassel, Azizi Johan, Al Ruban, and Haji. M: Recommended reading Cassavetes On Cassavetes by Ron Carney. It's an amazing collection of interviews and essays the move chronologically through his filmography. Anything that I could add here is better articulated by the man himself. If you're thinking about going to film school, don't. Go buy a copy of this book. Morgan watched Opening Night (1977), directed by Cassavetes, starring Gena Rowlands, Gazzara, Cassavetes, Joan Blondell, Paul Stewart, and Zhora Lampert. M: One of the few interviews (unaired) done for Opening Night. Both Sean and Morgan watched Love Streams (1984), directed by Cassavetes, starring Rowlands, Cassavetes, Cassel, Diahne Abbot, and Margaret Abbot. Also discussed in this section: Shadows, Faces, Catcher in the Rye, Akira Kurosawa, Boxcar Bertha, Martin Scorsese, Minnie and Moskowitz, Cassavetes on Cassavetes, Peter Bogdanovich, John Flynn, Bob Fosse, Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs, The Killing, Jim Jarmusch, Roger Corman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Lewis, Andy Warhol, "Indie" movies, mumblecore movies, Olivier Assayas, Kurosawa's Dreams, 50 First Dates, Boogie Nights, Michael Haneke, Claire Denis, Gordon WIllis, 48 Hrs, Lucio Fulci, Seijun Suzuki, Gloria, The Professional, Big Trouble, Paper Moon, Ronin, Steven Soderbergh, Fincher, Robert Duvall, Quentn Tarantino, George Clooney, Michael Mann, The American, and that song from Kelly's Heroes. And finally, for here's Peter Falk, Ben Gazarra, and Cassavetes on Dick Cavett sort of promoting Husbands. The funniest shit e v a r. M: Director Michael Ventura documented the making of Love Streams in the doc “I'm Almost Not Crazy…” (a great bit of dialogue delivered by Gena Rowlands in the film) More so than any of his other films, and perhaps underlined by Cassavete's health, Love Streams echoes back to and mirrors many of his previous films. Mabel from ‘Influence', elements of which appear in Richard and Sarah. Cassavetes/Rowlands interrogating their own relationship through avatars or playing characters themselves. The dissolution of the marriage consummated in ‘Minnie & Moskowitz'. Characters perceived as “crazy” by those around them. Love. Love. Love? Love. Where to put it. What happens when it goes away. Is it constant? Though this wasn't his last film—that was the terrible work-for-hire ‘Big Trouble'—-Cassavetes thought of it as summation of his life's work. 1:17:24 - 1:38:20 - Hottest Film Directors Rankings: Nominations include: David Cronenberg, John Cassavetes, Antoine Fuqua, Shane Carruth, John Sayles, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Zack Snyder, Ringo Lam, David Lynch, Cary Fukunaga, Roger Corman, David Fincher, Kathyrn Bigelow, Anne Banecroft, Claire Denis, Paul Thomas Anderson, John Waters, Noah Baumbach, Sofia Coppola, Steve McQueen, William Friedkin, Sylvester Stallone, Amy Seimetz, Robert Rodriguez, and Renny Harlin. Ryan, Sharron Farrell, James Dixon, and William Wellman Jr. Also discussed in this section: Black Caesar, John Carpenter, Halloween 3, They Live, Hell Up In Harlem, Steven Spielberg, Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan, God Told Me To, Phone Booth, Maniac Cop 1-3, Robin Wood's "Return of the Repressed"/"American Nightmare" articles, Keifer Sutherland, David Lean, Stanley Kubrick, Rick Baker, and Cronenberg on Cronenberg.
