The Know Show – the golden age of hypocrisy

Uncommon Courage

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 133:48 Transcription Available

Are you guffawing a lot at the news these days? The hypocrisy of it all? Whether it's the “gift” of a $400 million luxury plane to Donald Trump (which will cost $1 billion to get off the ground), the idea of white Afrikaners as refugees, or even the Pope's style of Christianity too woke according to MAGA, there's definitely a lot to guffaw at these days. The hypocrisy is quite stunning, so what are we to make of it all? Is it good for the world, or is it the beginning of a new and confusing dark age? Meanwhile, Trump and the CEOs of America's most prominent companies are signing major deals in the Middle East, mainly in defense, aviation, energy, mining and artificial intelligence, sanctions on Syria have been lifted, Netanyahu is out in the cold (or is he) and deep sea mining is going to happen in order to counter China's mineral dominance – a “deep sea gold rush” is on the way – but at what cost to life on earth?Beyond the US and the shenanigans happening on a daily basis, Africa is being hit extremely hard by climate change, children born in 2020 will face 'unprecedented lifetime exposure' to climate extremes, extreme weather events in Australia (only two events) will cost insurers nearly $1 billion so far in 2025, Putin isn't going to Turkey for peace talks, and bombs continue to fall on women and children in Gaza. There's a lot to take on board, so come and join us, Friday 16th May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG and 6pm AEST.To help us this week, we have Rebecca Downie joining us. Rebecca is passionate about the news and world affairs, and professionally is a personal branding photographer, the go-to photographer for entrepreneurs who are the face of their brand, a professional speaker, personal branding expert, as well as leader of The Athena Network Singapore, a professional networking community for female professionals. She is a great addition to our show and we're thrilled she said yes. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We'll talk about what it means to us, the world and we hope to inspire great conversations on the news that matters in the world today. The Know Show is based on Andrea T Edwards Weekend Reads, which are published every Saturday on andreatedwards.com, and covers the planetary crisis, topical moments in the world, global politics and war, business and technology, social issues, and passion/humour/history. It was more than a month ago when outback Australia was swamped by floods, experiencing a years' worth of rain in a week, which not only devastated lives and livelihoods, it devastated livestock as well. The floods were bigger than the size of Texas and to this day, locals are still waiting for the water to drain away completely. What were the final numbers of livestock lost? What was the impact and cost? How are local people feeling about this event and the future? We'll get to the bottom of that, as well as other major news on climate from around the world, including new information on the AMOC, some promising news from Antarctica (or is it?), the farmers in the UK have raised the alarm on crops, Tony Blair putting his foot in it, extreme heat events, a significant decline in bird numbers reported in the US and what it means, we'll delve into Overshoot following Nate Hagens definition, the war between India and Pakistan because our world can not afford war, especially at this fragile moment for our world, and so much more. As always, there's a lot to discuss, so come and join us, 9th May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 5pm AEST. To help us dig into the conversation, we are delighted to have Heather Cameron joining us from the outback of Australia. Hailing from Gunderbooka near Bourke in New South Wales, she's a born and bred outback gal, but today, is running her own country retreat, so everyone can enjoy the peace of Australia's stunning nature. The Lower Lila retreat is 64,000 acres, grazing sheep, cattle, and goats, and has a carbon project to conserve areas of native bush lands for future generations to come. But she's doing more than that, Heather is a credentialed practitioner of coaching, while also studying to become a master practitioner of coaching, and she is also author of ‘Never Underestimate a Woman' with book three in the series coming out soon. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. Just when you thought the world couldn't get any more dangerous, India and Pakistan are rattling sabres, following a terrible massacre in the Kashmir-administered region of India. While we know a response is imminent, the idea of two of the world's nuclear powers heading into confrontation is not a good sign in a world already overwhelmed by war. Will sanity prevail, or will Nationalism in both countries push us further towards a world of violence? Can the world even survive it?On the other side of the world, in Portugal, Spain, as well as part of France and Belgium, we saw the grid go out and it was chaos. There are many interesting aspects to this story, but the most interesting was the “facts” being shared (and believed) before the engineers even had time to understand what actually happened! Mis- and disinformation is now out there and no matter the facts shared, it will continue to be believed. It was also Trump's first 100 days in power and the media around the world is reporting on this, so how did he honour himself? We'll discuss it tomorrow. We'll also talk about Bezos bending down, China not bending down, how aligning with Trump isn't great for your electoral chances, Australia and Singapore's forthcoming elections, the extreme heat events hammering India, Pakistan and the Middle East, and more, so come and join us, Friday 2nd May, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG and 6pm AEST.To help us this week, we've got two special guests. Climate Courage: the Pope was a climate activist

This week the world has come together to mourn the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, age 88. As speculation mounts about who will replace him, and whether they will be a reformer or traditionalist, we want to reflect on Pope France's contribution to the climate movement and the change he drove around the world, not just across the 1.4 billion Catholics he led, but beyond to other religions and cultures too. Pope Francis was an unapologetic environmental advocate, and he used his papacy to raise awareness about the critical need to curb greenhouse gas emissions. While many believed he shouldn't discuss it, because it was considered ‘political,' the Pope said that climate change was a spiritual issue, and he clearly laid out the consequences of not tackling it in his 2015 “Laudato Si” - the first-ever papal encyclical focused solely on the environment. In it, he discussed climate change, loss of biodiversity to water scarcity, as well as societal breakdown, and how the poorest would suffer the most. A follow-up “Laudato Si” was published in 2023, and in this, Pope Francis called for a broad change in the “irresponsible lifestyle connected with the Western model.” So, we must ask - did we listen? Because global emissions have kept rising, including record emissions released in 2024. One positive sign of the Pope's contribution is environmental leaders from around the world acknowledging the impact he had in waking the world up to the dangers we face, leaving a legacy firmly entrenched in the climate movement. The Pope was a climate activist. We had two very special guests join us. Clare Westwood, who is a powerhouse in the climate movement, and regional director of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and the Co-Founder and Executive Chair of Laudato Si' Asia – a Coalition for Culture of Care, Resilience and Ecological Justice (LSIA-CAREJ). Dr Lorna Gold is the Executive Director of the Laudato Sì Movement. Lorna's focus is on supporting the team at a time of significant change, amplifying the intersection of faith and environmental stewardship. Since 2015, LSM's team's dedication has cultivated a global network advancing ecological conversion. Dr Gold's tenure as Interim CEO at FaithInvest fortified her resolve to align faith-based investments with environmental and social sustainability, pioneering strategies that resonate with shared values for a healthier planet. We'll be discussing the Pope's legacy and a lot more of the environmental news we think you should be aware of, including the economic and geopolitical situation the world is currently in, so come and join us, 25th April, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 6pm AEST. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. It's been hard to have a break from the show with so much going on in the news, but our sanity is important, as is spending time with family. That said, we are very happy to be back this week, and of course, we are going to talk about the tariff battle between the US and China, digging into the question – who is going to win? If you're in the US, you might have a different view, but out here in Asia, we see things very differently and we're looking forward to exploring it. No question, the news has been relentless, and we will talk about coping with the onslaught, but to give you a flavour for topics, we have to ask - has the US already gone fully fascist? Ignoring a Supreme Court ruling, attempting to control universities, attacking law firms who don't comply, axing the wire service from the Whitehouse coverage pool, as well suing any media organisations reporting on topics the Trump administration doesn't like, all the way through to pondering whether it's legal to send US citizens to El Salvadorian prisons… to name a few, but it doesn't sound very Democratic, does it? But what does it all mean to us – living beyond the US? The economy is obviously top of mind, as is world peace, but how do we understand this within the context of the even more alarming research from Copernicus' Climate Change Service and James Hansen's latest paper on accelerated warming? It's a lot, so come and join us as we dig into a complicated time in human history. Climate Courage: is it time for climate populism?

In February, Caroline Lucas and Rupert Read wrote an article in The New Statesman titled: It's time for climate populism. They suggest that as politics turns against net zero, we need to mobilise a genuine mass movement against ecological catastrophe. It's an adaptation message and concludes with: a depolarising wave of action that mobilises communities' instinctive protective instincts could really be… popular. And that is climate popularism. In response, Joseph Gelfer wrote: Climate Populism is Coming, But Not The Way Progressives Think. He argues that progressives may be right that climate populism is coming, but that they fundamentally do not understand the form it is going to take. A primary reason for this is because you can't take your existing agenda and “make it populist.” Climate Populism is Coming, But Not The Way Progressives Think - ZNetworkWe think this is a really important issue, so we're going to discuss the bigger story and opportunity/threat around the idea of climate populism, AND we're going to talk about how to operationalise it, as well as the barriers leaders of the climate movement face if they are serious about taking real-world action, which must prioritize those most at risk within our societies. If we don't carry them, we will not succeed, and extremism will continue to rise. To help us explore this far-reaching topic, we are delighted that Joseph Gelfer said yes to joining us on Climate Courage. The Know Show – a fork in the road

Climate scientist, Ben Santer, was recently quoted in an article suggesting we are now at a fork in the road and it's time to decide which path we take: “The fork we face is the choice between science and ignorance, between climate stability and climate carnage, between democracy and dictatorship. Between bright hope and dark despair. If we do not choose wisely, we will betray the sacred trust of our children and grandchildren.”This isn't just about the climate, it's about multiple crisis' (the polycrisis), and when we look around the world, or even within our own communities, many prefer to ignore the seriousness of this moment, because acknowledging it is just too hard to bear. And yet this is the road we are on, so how can we mobilize enough people to rise with resolve, strength and courage to make sure we choose the right path, especially as so many remain lost to hopelessness and despair? All we need to do is look at the United States, the world's most powerful democracy – (which, incidentally, could lose its democracy status, according to Varieties of Democracy project) – with its leaders making decisions upending the whole world order, creating chaos and increasing the risk of violence and war. It's certainly not too early to draw the conclusion that we are now firmly going in the unwise direction Ben Santer was talking about. So, it's time to ask - will we rise together and embrace this moment to change our path? Or will we fail? As always, lots to talk about, so join us, Friday 21st March, 7am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG and 6pm AEST.To help us this week, we've got a super special guest, John Dykes. We've been talking about the failure of imagination in coming to terms with this moment in time geopolitically since the start of the year, so are we imagining enough now? Let's hope so, because things are certainly getting intense, and fear is ricocheting around the world. Definitely not an easy time for any of us. As we've witnessed in recent weeks, it appears the US is now sprinting towards authoritarianism, while abandoning its allies and joining with its enemies. From the Zelensky debacle in the Whitehouse, aligning with Russia and North Korea in a key UN vote against the war in Ukraine, causing emergency meetings across Europe, with President Marcon discussing nuclear deterrence, and another French politician referring to Elon Musk as a “jester high on ketamine,” and Donald Trump as Nero. No question everything is hotting up. Within the US, we heard Trump's State of the Union this week and all the shenanigans surrounding it, along with many other concerning developments within the country, as well as international impacts. This includes international tariffs and all that entails, along with China proclaiming it is ready for “any type of war” with the US, while committing to a 7.2% increase in defence spending. It's a big discussion, covering a wide array of topics, and we'll do our best to focus on what matters most.To help us this week, we are delighted to welcome Michael Chua, a cybersecurity and digital technology consultant who has served banks, big tech and governments in 19 countries across four continents over the last 20 years. We've had to reschedule our marketing show due to a clash for our guest, so we are going to delve deeper into the economic conversation, this time focusing on the fact that the greatest transfer of wealth in history is about to happen. What, we hear you say? The richest group in human history are the Boomers, and as they start to head over the rainbow bridge, $60-80 trillion of their wealth will be transferred to the next generations – Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z and the new Alphas. This is the great wealth transfer, and where we are today is because of how wealth has been spent up to this point, however, now it is our time to spend it, and this is the place where a massive revolution can take place. It is our chance to separate the world we currently have, with the world we want in the future, and if we get it right, perhaps we can avoid social collapse? The biggest question we must ask ourselves is, how can we use this inherited wealth to keep hydrocarbons in the ground? Well, we can do business that ensures we grow and thrive at natures pace. How do we do that? That's what we're going to discuss in this week's Climate Courage!Come and join us on Friday, 28th February 2025 – 3pm Singapore time, and 7am UK time, or listen to the recording afterwards. Yes it has and it's a whole lot worse than most thought possible. Of course, we're not just talking about the chaos in the US, but everything else too - Canada, Mexico, Panama, Greenland, Gaza, China, Ukraine, Russia, to name a few, along with, of course, challenging the very foundations of Europe – that went down well, didn't it?Are we witnessing the creation of a New World Order in real-time, as many claim? It certainly can't be ruled out, so what does it mean for the rest of us? How will the ripples ‘ripple' out and impact our lives? Can we expect world leaders to respond with strength, or will they be weak? We'll discuss the signs so far. And what about Europe specifically - what can we expect there? Then again, we could be witnessing the collapse of the US Empire (as many predict) an event of such enormous scale, it would turn the world on its head. If that happens, let's just say: no empire has ever ‘died' gently…It's a tense time and everyone is on tenterhooks quite rightly, and that's why we are absolutely delighted to welcome the amazing Jessica Figueras to join us this week. Climate Courage: is Trump irrelevant?

Climate Courage is back for 2025 and it's just the three of us this week, as we have a lot to catch up on since our last show. To get off to a hot start, we'll discuss Donald Trump and team, asking the very simple question: is Trump even relevant in the fight for our future? We'll aim to pull apart the potential impact the next four years could have on global climate action, and we'll dig into the numbers too. Considering the state of our planet and the threats made so far – especially based on actions and executive orders over the last three weeks – how can the world counter it? Should we just accept that Trump and the GOP is irrelevant? And what about China's role in the mix? News on the planetary crisis seems to go from bad to worse, with January 2025 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels when it was expected to get cooler, a reality that has been called ‘terrifying' by climate scientists after defying expectations. Then James Hansen and team released their report Global Warming Has Accelerated, with 2°C warming now dead too, causing a flurry of conversations and arguments in the climate science community. As the years go on, and already in 2025, we are seeing significant environmental disasters, with extreme weather acceleration predicted. Should we finally grasp it's time to view all these wildfires and storms as the planet warning us with practice runs? And we better get ready for more, because in the Arctic this month we saw temperatures 20°C above average for this time of year, while news out of Antarctica continues to show dramatic changes, but it's not just happening to the planets extremities, glacial losses in the third pole are accelerating too. We are seeing extreme permafrost melt across the Northern latitudes, which could release massive amounts of methane very quickly, and the West Coast of Australia has exceeded 50°C in the last week, while the East is under water, to name a few. Come and join us for some Valentine's Day love of the planet, Friday, 14th February 2025 – 3pm Singapore time, and 7am UK time, or listen to the recording afterwards. We livestream to multiple locations, so follow us on social media. It's time to get the show on the road after a long break, and boy a lot has happened since our last show in December. Our 2025 kick off will just be the three of us – Andrea, Joe and Tim – with the goal of trying to make sense of what's going on, which is not easy, because there's not a lot of clarity out there, even from the best voices globally. We're going to cover as much as we can, from the actions of Donald Trump to Elon Musk and DOGE, the Democrats apparent vapid response, the power behind the power, the ripping up of the normal world order and what it means, AI, Gaza, global aid and of course, climate change. There's a lot to discuss and this will definitely be a more freewheeling discussion than normal. One of the key issues that keeps coming to the fore as we try to grasp the enormity and complexity of the situation we are in – whether we are American or not – is a lack of imagination about what it all means and how big this really is. Where is it taking us? What should we expect? And how do we get our minds prepared, when the world is changing so dramatically? Lots to discuss and we'd love to have you with us. The Livestream kicks off at 3pm Singapore time, Friday 7th January 2025. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, give us your view. In fact, if you want, come and join us as a guest. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. It's our last show of the year and that means we'll take the opportunity to look back at the major news that happened around the world in 2024 – how much do you remember? Or perhaps it all became a blur? Or maybe you haven't been paying attention at all and this is your chance to catch up in one go? We'll discuss geopolitical developments across the world, including the results of more than 50 per cent of the world's population going to the polls. From elections to wars, what happens next is what we are all waiting to see - will everything get better, or a whole lot worse? The climate has been off the charts this year, with extreme weather events hitting every corner of the globe, and the ramifications have been enormous, but it's the wider impacts over time we often miss – financial impacts, permanent destruction, food security, and beyond. A lot of records were set in 2024 in the climate space – not good records!   Of course, technology, especially AI, is on everyone's lips, plus we had Google achieve an amazing milestone this week, and we've seen wider technological progress you may not even be aware of – yes, the excitement of generating AI notes from our meetings is a small cog in a much bigger story. On the cultural front, it was a year of Taylor Swift and P Diddy, although we're sure the latter wished he was in the formers seat right now – his court case will certainly get the world's attention in 2025. To help us wrap up the year, our first guest is Taryn-lee Kearney, from Johannesburg, South Africa. Tarryn is a CEO, industrial psychologist, global speaker, multifaceted facilitator, consultant and mental health advocate. She's also the Boomchakalaka lady. Our second guest from Singapore is Natalie Nancy Tan, a dance fitness instructor, personal trainer, M.E.L.D Program Creator, resilience speaker, and transformation coach. Natalie has a mission - Empowering Women to Move from Victim to Victor with the 3R Framework: Realization, Resilience, Rejoice. We are convinced both ladies will bring super positive energy to the discussion. The Livestream kicks off at 3pm Singapore time, Friday 13th December. Cop29 has been deemed a failure as it only promised $300 billion to developing countries by the mid-30s. What's even more challenging about this number is the percentage offered as loans, because countries already struggling with debt burdens taking on more debt to deal with a crisis not of their own making is amoral, not to forget, it's not charity. Ensuring the developing world gets the funds required to transition to clean energy is a critical need for the world. Another vital pillar is financing for adaptation, because if we don't, we will be overrun by record human migration – something that will cause even more challenges for our societies. Beyond the needs of the developing world, we're going to get personal. Are we aware of how the planetary crisis will impact our own pockets – regardless of how much wealth we have today? Are we preparing for it? As the planetary crisis escalates, with extreme weather events costing $2 trillion globally just in the last decade, how will that roll out and impact us individually? Insurance costs, pensions, investments, and beyond? What impact will all these extreme weather events have on our food, our homes, transportation, as well as air, water and on we could go? Are we ready to face this truth? Do we want to know what we should be doing right now to get prepared? Yes? Then join us for our last Livestream of the year. To help us dig into this topic, we are delighted activist Robert Redmayne Hosking has agreed to come back and join us for a second week, because honestly, he has so much more to say. Robert is a lifelong nature and environmental enthusiast, and a conservationist at heart. Environmental and climate policies are his passion, and he is relentless on X, showing up with daily protests, as he works to shape the future of how leaders, governments and the media think. What's true? What's not? How do we move forward when ‘truthiness' is acceptable? How do we navigate complex times when basic facts are denied rigorously, something that is definitely not serving the common good? We have entered the era of denial and “enshittification,” a term invented by the sci-fi writer Cory Doctorow, to describe online platforms and the process of their decay. According to Rose Payne, she says you'll recognize it immediately from pretty much any online service you've signed up to: “You enter into it, and at the beginning, it's good, but once they have network effects, they degrade the quality of their offering. So, you're trapped in a space that's no longer useful to you.”Based on the rapid departure or lack of participation from so many centrists in the social media discourse, and the dominance of extreme far right and extreme far left voices on all social media platforms, we are in a bit of a spot, don't you think? We have critical issues on the horizon, which threaten to impact all of humanity, but when we have no consensus on what is the truth, along with the denial of expert opinion running rampart, where do we go from here? It's just the three of us this week, as our guest was unable to make it, but it will be as fiery as ever, as we dig into a very complicated topic, as well as sharing the news happening around the world. The Livestream kicks off at 3pm Singapore time, Friday 29th November. Since our last show, the US election happened and Cop29 kicked off, with a whole lot of other news in between. In the US, the recriminations and post-election analysis consumes our feeds, while Cop29 starts with the US threatening to leave the Paris Climate Agreement (again), Argentina ordering its representatives to leave after three days, all while reports state fossil fuel emissions have hit new highs, devastating storms continue across the world, and the cost of food continues to rise as extreme weather events destroy essential crops everywhere. To add to that, global media have been called out for reporting stories that are completely different to what people are seeing with their own eyes. How can we trust the media? So where do we go from here? What will be the global fall-out from the US election? Which country will move to the far right next? Germany is on the line here! But trust is another massive crisis we've faced for decades, and the media seems intent on making it worse – so where do we go for the truth? Or has our information system become so corrupted it's not even possible anymore? And while all this chaos escalates across our societies, scientists are continually issuing red alerts on the planetary risks – a growing food crisis, destruction from extreme weather events, ecosystems collapsing, ocean heat and its impacts, the earth's energy imbalance and on it goes. New Delhi had an air pollution watch leading up to this year's Diwali celebrations, with its air quality remaining ‘very poor' for the 7th consecutive day. Meanwhile, across the border, the Pakistani city of Lahore had to close all primary schools for a week, with the air quality index (which measures a range of pollutants) exceeding 1,000 on Saturday. This is WELL above the benchmark of 300, which is considered "dangerous" by the World Health Organization.Right across Southeast Asia, a health crisis is unfolding due to coal-fired power plants releasing fine particle pollution, causing millions of premature deaths annually. But it's deforestation too. In Singapore, Malaysia, and many other neighbouring countries (depending on which way the wind is blowing), the region experiences an annual “haze” season. This happens because tropical forests in Indonesia's peatlands are intentionally burned, so palm oil plantations can replace them. It causes havoc in the region, including driving many local animals close to extinction – like the Sumatran Tiger and the Orangutan. While not over, stronger action has been taken, and the region hasn't seen a haze like its worst, which happened in 2015!Moving up North to Thailand, it also has an annual burning season in the northern regions of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, resulting in haze sweeping across the country, and for those living in the smoke, it's deadly. Until you've experienced living in this type of pollution, it's very challenging to describe how terrible it is, but of course, it is also very easy to sit back and say “someone else will sort it out.” Well, our amazing guest this week – Khun Weenarin Lulitanonda aka Weena - is leading from the front and established the Thailand Clean Air Network nearly six years ago, and is fighting with all of her power to get this act passed. A Senior Consultant for the World Bank, please join us is welcoming Weena to the show, where she will share the work she is doing, what drove her to act, the challenges she faces and what she hopes to achieve. Is your city climate ready? Is your government or council taking the appropriate action to adapt for the climate that is coming? As we watch the disasters unfold around the world, we know that far too many governing bodies are on the back foot when it comes to adaptation, and in poorer countries, it is even more challenging to prepare as the funding just isn't there. When it comes to preparing our cities, what should our leaders be doing today to ensure we are ready for the climate we have coming, and what is already happening around the world? More importantly, what's not happening fast enough, which cities are leading the charge, and what cities are most at risk? There is so much to discuss around this topic, including preparing for climate refugees, investing in critical infrastructure like climate-ready dams, roads, bridges, all the way through to adequate mental health support services and resilient healthcare infrastructure, so it's a lot to discuss, but we'll work hard to get to the bottom of it. To understand more, we are delighted to welcome John Maynard, a consultant and expert in safer towns and cities, who started his own consultancy after decades working for local councils in Australia. Unless you've been living under a rock, woke, wokeism or ‘the woke mind virus' are now part of our public vernacular. But where did it come from? How did this awful word or phrase become so normalized in our societies? Equally, is woke a bad thing? And surely it's not a mind virus? To hear the word woke, all you have to do is watch any political campaign (anywhere in the world) and you'll hear woke used as a blanket term to criticize anything progressive. That includes racism, women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, DEI, migration, all the way through to cancelling books in libraries or schools. So why is it everywhere? Is it a good thing for society or is it dividing us even more? And who benefits from its popularity? As the world starts to comprehend the impacts of the polycrisis – which is the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events all happening at the same time – we must get focused on building our resilience “muscles,” while also understanding we need to be there for each other, because it is our local communities who will step up when the going gets tough. As the floods, fires, droughts, famine, storms, sea level rise, and other disasters keep showing us, none of us are safe in the challenging years ahead, no matter where we live. This means refugees are on the move in greater numbers than ever before, not just from climate hotspots, but also from war-torn countries, or those fleeing political repression. If you are in this situation and have no wealth, what is this journey like? How do you stay positive and hopeful of a future for yourself and your family? And is joy possible? Because if we forget to smile and laugh, what's the point? That's why we thought it was time to hear the story of a very special man, who has been through hell and back, and today he's a working comedian, brightening people's lives around the world. We are delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to Nico Ndlovu.Nico is originally from Zimbabwe, after which he struggled as a refugee and asylum seeker, and now he's lived in Scotland for the best part of two decades. Today he is a podcast producer for Siyakhuluma We Talk Podcast, which focuses on the experiences of asylum seekers in the UK, and he also hosts various events, including his own comedy open mic night: That Guy Comedy Show. Nico's volunteers with various projects and charities in Glasgow, with his focus always on the movement of people such as asylum seekers and refugees. He presently volunteers with NACCOM Network (The No Accommodation Network), he is a member of One Strong Voice, the UK's first coalition of campaigners with lived experience of the immigration and asylum system, he volunteers with Castlemilk Community Church Furniture Project, and he is a board member of the Southeast Integration Network. That is what the show is about, from refugee to comedian and all the lessons learned, it's happening on Friday, 27th September – 3pm SG time, 8am UK time. The Know Show – adaptation and regeneration required

Epic floods have wreaked havoc from Africa to Asia to Europe, claiming more than 1,500 lives and costing US$15 billion, and this all happened in September. As one meme put it this week, we are not experiencing the flood of the century, we are experiencing a century of floods. Beyond floods, we've had mega fires on the West Coast of the USA and now Portugal is facing the flames. Dams are collapsing, homes, farms and businesses destroyed, crops lost, millions displaced, with dangerous zoo animals and criminals on the prowl in Nigeria. It leaves us asking: surely it's time to take adaptation seriously? Surely it's time we focused on regenerating our natural world? You wouldn't believe we are in an environmental crisis as we watch our politicians spewing extremely divisive narratives worse than we've ever seen, confirmed Russian interference in elections across the US, Europe and beyond, which all feeds into the chaos and division that is tearing our world apart. Then we had the big news in Lebanon this week, with people losing eyes, fingers and their lives after thousands of pagers and walkie talkies exploded simultaneously across the country. Will this ensure war accelerates across the Middle East, as the climate emergency accelerates across the world? It appears all sense has been lost. To help us dig into this critical topic, we are delighted to welcome Dr Farshid Pahlevani, who is a research scientist focused on helping manufacturing companies create solutions for their waste products and showing them how to turn waste into profit. Dr Farshid is an Associate Professor at The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and we are delighted he said yes to joining us on The Know Show. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. Climate Courage: getting to a state of acceptance

Being in a state of acceptance about the climate crisis is not an easy path to tread, but it is a necessary part of the journey – for the sake of our own mental health. No question it's challenging as the news is increasingly grim – from the loss of the Great Barrier Reef to sharks leaving their coral homes which impacts wider ecosystem health in our oceans, to the amount of CO2 spewing into our atmosphere from the mega fires that are wreaking havoc across the world. We have extreme floods, extreme heat, extreme storms, and Brazil is in a state of crisis as it suffers its worst ever drought. Right across the Nine Planetary Boundaries, the acceleration of human harm on our environment and the negative consequence of that harm is accelerating, which means it's not just climate change we need to be thinking about. So, how do we confront these stark truths and not fall into debilitating despair? How do we not throw our hands in the air and give up, or worse, get so cynical we become a person without hope in our future or our fellow humans? How do we get to a state of acceptance, so we can be empowered to act in every way that is in our power, which positions us to help change our trajectory? That is what we want to talk about, as Climate Courage returns for its new season, Friday, 13th September – 3pm SG time, 8am UK time. The role of religion and spiritual organisations in tackling the climate emergency is a huge opportunity for collective action, and we are seeing leaders of many religious institutions – including the Pope, and the Imams – speaking to their followers on the critical transformation required to live in balance with nature. But is the message landing? And are we understanding our role in this, as individuals and as members of the human collective, regardless of our faith? We have a power packed show, that will go wide and deep, where we will tackle the question - why is faith or organized religion an ally in the fight for a live-able climate? We'll discuss the idea of free will, the role religious institutions can have in tackling the emergency, the Interfaith opportunity, as well as the importance of Church leaders empowering and educating their representatives right down to the local level. We will also touch on war and the weaponization of religion, including how some faiths appear to be actively working against a live-able future and a better world. Our amazing line up of guests includes the esteemed Dr Bhupender Kaur, who is a medical director and volunteer doctor at UNITED SIKHS since 2010. Dr. Kaur has received widespread media coverage and acclaim, and has received several awards, including the Pride of Sikh Community Award (2003) and Bhushan Puraskar Award (2023), among others. Tim Wade, co-host of The Know Show, is a professional speaker and now in his final year studying a Masters of Divinity.Clare Westwood is a powerhouse in the climate movement, and regional director of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and the Co-Founder and Executive Chair of Laudato Si' Asia – a Coalition for Culture of Care, Resilience and Ecological Justice (LSIA-CAREJ). And finally, Gracious Denis, who is the program officer for Gender Justice and Climate/Environment for the Church of Uganda, where he implements programs promoting gender justice, and addressing climate change and environmental degradation.Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. May 3rd was World Press Freedom Day and a UN report released stated 44 environmental journalists have been murdered in last 15 years. This means to report on the state of the environment has become a perilous profession, with the highest number of killings in Asia Pacific (30 cases), while Latin America and the Caribbean reported 11.The UN report surveyed 905 journalists from 129 countries, and more than 70 per cent had been attacked, threatened or pressured, with attacks on environmental reporters and news outlets up 42% in the past five years. This puts us all in a dangerous situation. Accurate information on the climate crisis has never been more urgent, and yet it is up against an extraordinary surge of disinformation, as well as threats of violence. The changes in our environment are now before all our eyes, with no country spared the impacts, and this means environmental reporting is critical to help raise awareness about the urgency of our situation, to document and give voice to those most affected, and to encourage individuals, businesses, and governments to get serious about adaptation plans, and to take immediate action to reverse course before it is too late. And yet, the people trying to help all of us are facing more and more danger to do their job – it needs to stop.To help us dig into this very important issue, we are delighted to welcome Robin Hicks, associate editor of Eco-Business, Asia Pacific's largest media and business intelligence organisation dedicated to sustainable development and ESG performance. Robin has worked as a journalist across Asia for nearly 20 years, but he's more than a journalist, he's a passionate advocate for wildlife, working as a volunteer wildlife rescue officer for ACRES Singapore (Animal Concerns Research & Education Society), and has been volunteering for important conservation work since the 90s. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. If you're a fan of Queen, “The Show Must Go On” will be meaningful, as it's connected to the end of Freddie Mercury's life. But we're using it in a different context. All over the world, we are seeing reports of excess deaths, something we really came to understand during the Covid pandemic. However, today, excess deaths are coming from extreme heat, extreme weather events, pollution, as well as rising cancers and other impacts in younger people, to name a few. On the other side, there are millions of people suffering long Covid and the impact it's having on them AND their community is devastating. Add to this the cost-of-living crisis, food security, fuel security, the chaos of war, the nuclear threat, innocents suffering in war, and on we could go. All of this and more is creating an immense feeling of helplessness because all we can do is stand witness - at home and in the wider world. None of us are immune, and the challenge so many are facing with personal suffering, while witnessing global catastrophes, is taking a huge toll on people's mental health around the globe. It's tough and today we're going to share our personal experiences of suffering, while paying attention to the bigger global story, and how we navigate these challenging times, hoping to offer some wisdom to those who have nowhere else to go for help. It could get emotional, we must warn you, especially as some experiences are very current and raw. We lost our guest this week due to a commitment, and Tim Wade is taking a very well-deserved break with his family, so we are delighted Joanne Flinn said YES to joining us for this deep and very heartfelt conversation. Joanne is working deep in the heart of sustainability and ESG with business leaders. Propaganda has always been an issue in our societies, but the problem is becoming a much bigger challenge today. Recently, a British man was charged over an arson plot targeting a Ukrainian business after he was allegedly recruited to act for the mercenary group, Wagner. He will face trial under the UK's new National Security Act, the first time a case will be brought under this new legislation, designed to crack down on foreign agents. But this isn't the only incident. A more serious Russian campaign of sabotage is spanning the whole of Europe, with signal interference in the air and at sea. The challenge is this hostile action from Russia is becoming gradually normalized, because it appears that nobody is willing or able to deal with it. Of course, this isn't just happening in Europe, with China on a propaganda offensive around the world, as well as Americans being targeted by foreign propagandists using the internet and social media to fill minds with untruths. Unfortunately, they are lapping it up.  It appears a bored, listless and fearful society is definitely a successful feeding ground for disinformation, and we will all suffer its impact if we don't get a handle on the situation. To help us dig into this fascinating topic, we are very happy to welcome Taryn-Lee Kearney, the Chief Executive Director of Aha Training and Development. That means no relief is on the horizon for the millions of people being impacted, and reports of deaths from heat stroke are growing by the day. It is challenging for the wealthy countries in the North to comprehend how devastating this heatwave is, with most of the population living without air-conditioning and failing electricity grids. Equally, are we all looking at these complicated issues from every angle? Is there something being said in the grey zone that is important for us to know and understand? A few weeks ago, we discussed the story of Bryan Johnson, a 46-year-old tech bro who cashed out a few years ago and now spends all his time trying not to die. Today he is suffering from long Covid, however he's part of a bigger story about an obsession to work out how to live longer and healthier lives.  At the centre is the longevity industry – a multi-billion-dollar industry – and it's goal is to target aging at the cellular or molecular level, as well as promoting healthy aging and improving our quality of life. The industry consists of several distinct segments, including Gero science, Biomedicine, AgeTech, and Finance, however, do we really need people living longer? And if we do live longer, what will that look like when facing climate breakdown? Essentially, are we thinking this through? To help us dig in, we're so happy to welcome Dr. Zobaida Akhter from Bangladesh, who has a mission to empower people so they can value the importance of gender equity and equality in all spheres of life. In Missouri, if you're pregnant you can't get divorced – women's rights are really progressing over there – not to mention we had the whole IVF debacle which is sending people into a tail spin; and of course, adding to the “what will he do next” campaign, Donald Trump launched his gold sneakers, which comes with a whole host of further craziness. Beyond America: research has shown that every single placenta tested in a research study had microplastics in it: the situation in Ukraine is horrendous and we now know 31,000 troops have been killed while the US continues to dither on proving support; Mexico, one of the world's most populous cities, could run out of water within months; and billionaires are not only building bunkers to escape when it all collapses, but now they're adding flammable moats to keep the rest of us out.  No wonder everyone is a bit strung-out at the moment. Everywhere you look, something crazy is going on. How do we calm everything down and come back together? To help us dig in, we're thrilled to welcome Chantelle Botha, affectionately known as "The Catalyst" to the show. Chantelle is a well-known expert in identity-driven purpose and is celebrated for her unique ability to instigate change among her clients. We celebrated Valentine's Day this week and messages of love are flooding our social media channels, which is always a nice balm for the soul. However, then you turn on the news and see the shooting in Kansas City during the Super Bowl celebrations, the planned attack on Rafah still going ahead, X taking payment from terrorist organizations, the US reconsidering its relationship with South Africa after taking Israel to the ICJ for genocide, and of course, Trump threatening NATO members if they don't pay up…. It's hard to find the love. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, released an article on LinkedIn this week, and it's a call for peace. Peace in the world. Peace within communities. Peace with justice. Peace with nature. It's also a call to love and a call to action, for the greater good of all life on earth, and yet our leaders continue to move in the other direction. War is growing, but how can we continue to fight wars today, when the stability and resilience of the earth system is hanging in the balance? Our biosphere is on it's knees, and yet war and it's devastation is growing.  We've got to turn this all around! That's just a flavour of some of the news we'll discuss, so do come and join us and you'll be up to date with all the major news happening in our world.  To help us dig in, we're thrilled to have the Culture Catalyst, Scott Harrison join us this week. He's an ICF performance coach, a leadership, sales and recruitment trainer, mentor, host of the Culture Catalyst Podcast and a professional speaker. We are looking forward to hearing his thoughts.  The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. This event was quickly followed by the announcement that UNRWA had members involved in the October 7th attack, resulting in countries all over the world announcing they would stop funding until a thorough investigation happens. With the Palestinians now forced to eat grass and drink polluted water, the situation couldn't be worse. And that's just a flavour of what we will discuss, so do come and join us and you'll be up to date with all the major news happening in our world. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that's getting everyone's attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. The negotiations have been taking place in Dubai, and breaking news suggests an agreement to move away from fossil fuels has been agreed, however, the words phase-out is not in the final text. What this means is the recognition of the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions has been agreed, which is a milestone for a Cop, because no previous event has seen agreement on the need to move away from oil, gas and coal. Are we on the right path now? We wait and see. In the meantime, alongside Cop28, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato, with SirCollins Manyasi and a dedicated team of climate advocates, hosted a virtual event called ‘12 Days of Cop,' with the theme #Its4U. The news surrounding Cop28 often felt dark and hopeless, so this show was a bolt of bright light throughout the negotiations, as amazing people from across the world shared inspiring work happening in all corners of the world, but especially on the front lines, where the greatest impacts are already being felt. So, what's next? Our leaders - in government, business, the media and humanitarian organizations - have finally “read the room” and made a positive decision, which means we might finally be moving in the right direction at last, so come and join us this Friday, as we go through the results of Cop28, discuss #Its4U and what it means to you, as well as look ahead to 2024, and the on-going fight to ensure a live-able future for humanity and all life on earth. We will even talk about how we keep oil, gas and coal in the ground. This is the last Climate Courage of 2023, so come and join us, make sure you ask lots of questions. Climate Courage is a fortnightly Livestream and podcast published on Uncommon Courage, where we go big picture on the climate crisis and focus on the actions you and I can take to be part of the solution. In this episode, Jeannette talks to Andrea T Edwards who is known as The Digital Conversationalist. She is an author, public speaker, podcaster and a communications expert that, over the years, has helped many companies, including Microsoft, to improve the way they communicate. They discuss how to develop cultural intelligence so you can get the best out of people regardless of where they are from or how they were raised. How communicating in the digital world differs and how to use social media to genuinely connect rather than to broadcast what you have done or think. Andrea also explains how to become more resilient and be ready for the radical changes that the world is facing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Be humble and listen. Pay attention to non-verbal forms of communication. Trust is key. When their leaders genuinely own something, it is easy for them to get their employees to do the same.  Work out what your focus is and who your audience is. Don't let trolls stop you from using social media.  There are more good people in the world than bad. If all of them spoke up they would soon change the narrative. Bad things happen because people stay silent. Honour who you are and what you need to be happy. Strength comes from being in control of your heart and mind. How you respond to things. BEST MOMENTS ‘To work out how to get the best out of the people that you work with from different cultures requires really deep empathy and sensitivity. ´ ‘In the English language, we use about 5,000 words regularly, yet there are about 700,000 aspects of body language.' ‘We need to stop being scared. We need to step into our voices and get the world on track.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. There is a sweet spot where intuition and data meet, but that opportunity doesn't always present itself. Ignoring intuition is ignoring a level of intelligence that's needed in this world. Intuition is a sensory faculty that sees, hears, and understands data that isn't easily uncovered by ordinary means. We live in a world that's saturated with many different kinds of fears. We should be able to listen to that fear but instead of feeling doomed, focus on how we could change what we need to in order to make things better. Find silence in your life. Turn off everything, and put the noise of the world out of your head so that you'll be able to hear your own voice again. This is where intuition starts and this is how you'll be able to cultivate it.   "Someone who's intuitive is a data gatherer in their own right." — Andrea Edwards See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Andrea Edwards:  Website: www.andreatedwards.com | www.uncommon-courage.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndreaTEdwardsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreatedwards/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDigitalConversationalistFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/uncommoncourageaninvitationInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncommonandrea/  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370
