What can stoicism teach us about empathy in modern life? This centuries-old philosophy can be directly applied to what we face now in our workplaces and our world.Shermin Kruse is here to talk to us about her latest book, Stoic Empathy. She shares what stoic empathy means and how the fusion of these seemingly opposing forces is particularly relevant today. She shares her personal story and how her immigrant journey shaped her understanding of empathy and stoicism. Sher also talks about how she leveraged stoic empathy as a lawyer to great success. We discuss practical tools for building influence and emotional regulation that you can start using today with your employees, your partner, or your kids!Whether you're a corporate leader, educator, parent, or simply seeking tools to navigate personal and professional challenges with integrity, you will love this conversation! Those are whom you owe a long-term duty to engage in and sustain that relationship. Our control in this world is not fixed - everything changes, everything evolves, and we need to be able to accept that we can't change and control everything.Stoicism allows you to make informed and deliberate decisions rather than reactive decisions, especially in difficult situations.Create relationships where you feel safe and are willing to trust the other person, even if you may not understand or agree in the moment."Know that silence is not submission, pause is not acceptance, and that even understanding is not agreement." — Shermin KruseEpisode References: Robin Dreeke: Spycraft and the Leadership Code of TrustChris L. I spent more time coming up with complete title of The Zebra Code: A Step-By-Step Guide to Mastering Career Skills That Make You a Standout Professional than writing the entire book. 7 months for the title. 6 months to write the entire book (really 5, because I spent a month polishing). True story. Why? I wanted to get in… Something unique (and avoid generic leadership-y titles like The Leadership Code yawn). Short main title (2-3 words only). A metaphor people will understand. Ability to coin, copyright, unique URL for the title, etc. Ongoing books in a series (for future offsprings). Tell them what's inside (of course). Demonstrate there's a framework (but didn't want to be wordy). Make a promise as to what will happen when they read the book. Be specific about reader avatar (title needed to include something about the “who”). So, it shakes out… Code = Takes care of the item on methodology inside. Guide = It IS a guide, but I could have used the word “system” here instead. Mastering the Career Skills = It's really about this and there are detailed lessons inside. Standout = This is what will happen to you and picks up zebra metaphor. Professional = The book is genuinely for white collar professionals even though anyone can read it. Don't even get me started on the number of sleepless nights I had thinking about the cover design. Wondering what gives with my analogy? Seconds baby. Seconds. As in S-E-C-O-N-D-S. That's what YOU have to make the impression. You don't actually think you get your entire resume to make an impression??? Uh, heck to the NO. Your career profile, the executive summary of your ENTIRE professional life if you will, is your billboard. It's your title and subtitle. It's your ONE and BEST chance to get them excited. To entice them to review the rest of your glorious resume which substantiates everything you CLAIMED in your career profile. Just like The Zebra Code. I enticed you with the title and subtitle. Then, fulfilled my promise on the 352 pages that sit inside the cover. You get 2 paragraphs and then the remaining 1.875 pages to make good on your promise. It happens in seconds. Or 2 paragraphs. In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Nik Kinley about how to rewrite our Leadership Code. Nik outlines strategies for leaders to identify their underlying tendencies, understand where they come from, and consciously work to interrupt or replace unhelpful patterns with new, more purposeful behaviours. He emphasises that this is an ongoing process, not a quick fix, and requires self-awareness and a willingness to make changes. Key Takeaways Our childhood experiences shape our leadership style and tendencies in subtle yet impactful ways. There is no inherently "good" or "bad" leadership code - it depends on the context. Self-awareness of our tendencies enables us to adapt our leadership approach. Change takes time but is possible through intentionally developing new behaviours. In this conversation Nik delves deeper into how childhood experiences, both positive and negative, can shape a leader's tendencies and behaviors. He provides examples of how early exposure to things like conflict resolution, authority figures, and emotional expression can become ingrained patterns that leaders fall back on, even subconsciously. Nik Kinley is a consultant, coach and author. GREAT conversation with Alain today. From the culture he grew up with to how he guides leaders today, you'll get a lot out of listening. His three Cs are key to leadership, whether at home or in your organization: Connection Communication Collaboration And he spoke of Consistency, which I'd call a 4th C in his model. Alain's book Cracking the Leadership Code is worth picking up! We connect as human beings. Our world demands people who can think and co-create within an organization. Leaders must find a way to convey that each employee feels valued and cared for. That's how you get real connection. Communication is about creating shared, mutual understanding. If you assume that the default is that what is being communicated will be misunderstood, what will you need to do to ensure true understanding? Collaboration means creating the culture together by asking the question of what gets the BEST out of people. In the interview, we discussed the graying of the workforce, mentorship, and remote work. Super interesting! Consistency counts and so does actively seeking feedback (so that you can get better). Think about this, too. It's called the Fundamental Attribution Error: We justify our actions based on our intentions. Others judge us based on the outcomes and results. We are experiencing a transformation, an evolution in how we lead and what makes a successful leader. Today, I had a great conversation with Alain Hunkins, CEO and author of Cracking The Leadership Code: Three Secrets to Building Strong Leaders about the common leadership assumptions that can get people into trouble, the obstacles we face in how to connect, the three secrets of strong leaders, and how we can communicate better. He shares the story of how one leader went from being ranked at the bottom to achieving outstanding results by focusing on people first before the numbers and the work.Alain and I discuss what gets in the way of empathy, the role transparency plays in killing the old leadership paradigm, how employees got to the point that they have such low confidence in their leaders - and what we can do to reverse that - and he'll also share a great trick to ensure you are communicating effectively. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Studies show we judge ourselves by our intentions, but others by their actions. The old model of command and control leadership is a dying paradigm. Leadership must evolve - all leaders are now living in a glass house with the technology available. We no longer live in a world of information asymmetry. Numbers are neat and tidy, people are not. To lead people, you have to make the time to connect with your team empathetically not just look at the business numbers.Ask for a receipt in your communication. It doesn't take much time, but it does increase understanding and clarity. "All leadership development is personal development, and all personal development is leadership development. We are diving headlong into the topic of leadership.  Grab your metaphorical popcorn; start your commute or head out the door on a walk- this one is thought provoking! Our co-host, Crina, is on a mission because, in her words, so many people are impacted by the "people in charge." Today's episode is an exploration of leadership, exploring why it's so darn crucial in our modern jungle of responsibilities. Newsflash from the Fortune 500 universe – it's raining women CEOs – relatively speaking anyway! In January 2023, the Fortune 500 list had a glow-up moment with more than 10% of companies now led by women. Finance, healthcare, retail – you name it, women are turning corporate landscapes into their own VIP parties. Leadership is a dance of focus, influence, perspective, and emotional connections. According to the leadership maestros, Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall, the secret sauce is meeting the "we" and the "I" needs of your team. But how do we get that secret sauce of the “I” and the “we?”  Project Aristotle, actually a deep look by Google on what makes better teams, reveals the magical ingredients, from creating psychological safety (no public shaming, please) to modeling dependability and providing crystal-clear structures.  The societal expectations we women often wrestle with? Turns out, those are the very things making women fantastic leaders. Decades of psychological research agree; when women lead, magic happens. Dr. Alice Eagly's studies reveal that women make better leaders, with a dash of transformational leadership and out-of-the-box thinking. We know leadership can be stressful and University of Southern California research finds that women make better decisions than men when under stress. Ladies, our brains are like stress-proof shields, managing cortisol like wizards handling wands. Women leaders make work better.  Women leaders aren't just breaking glass ceilings; they're transforming the leadership landscape into a place where there is more ease, meaning and joy.  Find all of our episodes at https://yougettowork.com/
