Series I bonds are largely unknown and unheard of, yet are one of the safest investments one can make with returns that are adjusted semiannually to factor in changes to inflation. These are backed by the full faith and credit of the US government, making them essentially risk-free. Millions of Americans receive a tax refund year after year. According to data from the IRS, between 70 and 75% of those who file their taxes get a refund, with the typical refund amounting to between $2,500 and $3,000. Student loan debt is a MASSIVE problem in America…a $1.68 trillion problem! 44.7 million people currently have student loan debt, averaging $37,584 in outstanding debt balance per borrower. When investing, sometimes you may sell your investments at a loss. There are potential benefits to this, namely being able to write off the losses on your taxes. On August 8, 2020, President Trump signed an Executive Order, Deferring Payroll Tax Obligations in Light of the Ongoing COVID-19 Disaster. This allows employers the option to refrain from withholding Social Security tax from their employees' paychecks from September 1-December 31, 2020 for employees earning less than $4,000 bi-weekly ($104,000 annually). This could lead to an extra 6.2% in take-home pay for many Americans. However, this may NOT be good, as employees will likely have to pay it back in early 2021, meaning they'll be taxed double from January 1-April 30, 2021.
