The African Wild Dog, more aptly known as the Painted Dog, is the largest wild canid species found in the entire African continent. The species is one of the rarest large carnivores in the world with the population of the species crashing from around 500,000 a hundred years ago, to an estimated 6,600 adult individuals today. It is for this reason that the species is listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. In the 20th century, Painted Dogs were immensely persecuted by farmers due to supposed livestock depredation by the species. Currently, the species is primarily threatened by habitat fragmentation, particularly as a consequence of the development of roads and other linear infrastructure within their range. Not only does this increase the number of dogs lost to road kill but increases the risks of human-wildlife conflict. Additionally, the social nature of the species, makes the Painted Dog highly susceptible to diseases, such as rabies, distemper and parvo-virus, often transmitted from free-ranging dogs. In this episode of The Think Wildlife Podcast, I interview Dr. Gregory Rasmussen, who is the Founder of Painted Dog Research Trust. Gregory is one of the leading scientists working on painted dogs in Africa. We discuss the conservation of the Painted Dogs and a variety of PDRT's projects, which include the Kazungula Road project, dog collaring, and den protection initiatives. Jim shares his extensive knowledge and passion for one health, particularly in the context of the rabies risk reduction scheme. Together, they explore the various threats facing the African wild dogs, from persecution and poaching to diseases and habitat loss. They delve into the importance of vaccination and the challenges of reaching remote areas with low population density. Jim also discusses his plans for conducting a real-world prospective study on rabies vaccination in African wild dogs, comparing different methods of vaccination. Throughout the episode, they highlight the need to engage local communities, address vaccine hesitancy, and implement community-led public health approaches. As they wrap up the conversation, they emphasise the urgency of prevention and the goal of eliminating rabies from Africa by 2030. Tune in to this eye-opening episode to learn more about the fascinating African wild dogs, their unique social structure, and the efforts being made to protect this critically endangered species. Jim Bond is a passionate wildlife enthusiast who has dedicated his life to studying and protecting the African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf. With over 50 names associated with this unique species, Jim is fascinated by its distinct characteristics that set it apart from other members of the dog family. Having diverged from other wolf-like species millions of years ago, the African wild dog's four toes on its front feet allow for an extended stride, making it the most efficient carnivore predator in Africa. Jim is amazed by the success rate of the African wild dog, with a remarkable 70% to 80% success rate in hunts. He is particularly captivated by their large, round ears, which possess an incredible sense of hearing. Jim never ceases to be astounded by the beautifully patterned coat of the African wild dog, which comprises a random mix of blacks, whites, browns, yellows, and even reds. Lastly, Jim admires the species' specially adapted teeth that are second in size only to the hyena's, enabling them to quickly tear apart their prey. To Jim, studying and protecting these fascinating creatures is not only a duty but a deeply rewarding experience that highlights the intricate beauty of the natural world.

As a great African predator and a hot-spot on safari, it is hard to believe that only last century, the African wild dog was considered vermin. It's beautiful coat of painted strokes makes it undeniably distinctive. Yet out in the field, this animal is hard to find. Yes, it camouflages easily against the landscape, but years of persecution, bounties and unintentional trappings means it's now one of the most endangered mammals on the planet. Revelations about its reliance on the pack for protection, predation and parenting means every dog matters in its bid for survival. So how can we further stop numbers dwindling? We were so honoured that Kim agreed to do our podcast - he has made so many immeasurably magical wildlife programs, all completely unique because Kim actually immerses himself into his subjects lives, gains their trust and thereby catches a lot of unseen footage of the species he is following. Man Cheetah Wild is one of the best cheetah programs we have ever seen. "It's about the lifestyle and cameras provide me with the challenge to bring home stunning images and footage to share with the world helping create an international awareness in Africa's wildlife. I spend years in the field following my film subjects allowing me to become very intimate with them until they behave in the most natural way and ignore my presence. It goes beyond that too, when the animals grant me the absolute privilege of becoming a part of their lives. There is little, if anything, in life that can be more gratifying. It brings us back to the day when we too (man) used to roam the African plains living alongside these wild animals. A far more natural way of filming… It would be very selfish of me to experience and live this special life without sharing it with the world. So yes, maybe it is about the camera… WHERE DID IT ALL START? I had the good fortune of spending my early years growing up in the wilds of Africa: the Kruger National Park, South Africa, where my father, Henry Wolhuter, was the Head Ranger. My grandfather, Harry Wolhuter, the very first ranger of the Kruger National Park, is a national legend being the only man ever to kill an adult male lion single handed with a knife after it had pulled him from his horse. After my 2 years national service in the South African mounted infantry and a degree in Grassland Science I entered the wildlife arena managing a game farm in Botswana. Later I served as Senior Warden of Mlawula Nature Reserve in Swaziland before taking up the camera. Today I find myself following the family tradition, although in a slightly different way, making documentaries on southern African Wildlife. Since 1988 I have made wildlife documentaries for National Geographic, BBC, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. I have now developed a very different niche in the wildlife filmmaking market, where I spend at least 2yrs on a production, getting to bond and develop very intimate relationships with my film subjects, all wild African animals. In the past these have included Leopard, Hyaena, Cheetah and African Wild Dogs. Through these intimate alliances I am not only able to document the animal's lives up close and personal, but people are seeing these animals in a way they've never seen them before and are able to engage more with the animal and almost feel what it's like to be that animal. I walk, run, hunt and sleep with these animals so much so that they completely accept my presence so everything I document is totally natural behaviour. This intimacy also provides a new look into animal behaviour, which at times is new to science. I have a very unique and natural affinity to develop these relationships with wild animals. Currently I live on Sango Wildlife Reserve in the Save Valley Conservancy in Zimbabwe, where I'm out every day and often all night living alongside my film subjects. This is no job, but a true passion handed down through generations of our Wolhuter family. Before retiring in 1948 after 44 years service in the Kruger National Park my grandfather Harry wrote: “My long experience has taught me that, thrilling the pleasures of shooting undoubtedly are, infinitely greater and far more lasting pleasure and interest can be obtained from the observation and study of wild animals, unafraid and uninterfered with, in their natural haunts; and I have never regretted my metamorphosis from hunter to guardian!” I can only hope he would be proud of me today…"

We're just weeks away from the big international climate talks in Glasgow, where governments will be trying to figure out a workable plan for how to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. Gaia Vince explores a couple of strategies to tackle climate change. By far the biggest source of the rise comes from the release of greenhouse gases when we burn fossil fuels, like coal, oil and gas. So it's no surprise that we need to cut back on this habit - but much of the discussions are over how much of our reserves countries can continue to burn. Earlier this year, a landmark report from the International Energy Agency said there must be an immediate end to new fossil fuel exploration, and that current production must drop by 75% by 2050 if we are to stay within emissions targets. Daniel Welsby from UCL talks to Gaia about his just published massive analysis of fuel reserves and extraction. His study doesn't go as far as the IEA's, but still says that 60% of the remaining oil and gas, and 90% of coal reserves must stay underground if we are to keep below that 1.5C temperature rise. Natural gas, or methane, has a much stronger effect on temperature than carbon dioxide, but because it doesn't last very long in the atmosphere before converting into carbon dioxide, it's been a bit overlooked by governments. Two recent reports, from the IPCC and the UN, have pointed out that cutting methane emissions would be a quick win in reducing global heating. Most of our methane emissions are because of leaks from the oil and gas industry, or from landfill sites and agriculture. Gaia discusses tackling methane with Drew Shindell, of Duke University in North Carolina, the author of the Global Methane Assessment from the UN Environment Programme. Climate change is already having an impact on life everywhere. We've all seen the powerful pictures of polar bears on melting ice, but global warming is also causing problems for species in the tropics. Dani Rabaiotti of the Zoological Society of London explains how climate change is having an impact on African wild dogs, a species which is already endangered. This week the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority A recommended that the time limit for using frozen eggs, sperm and embryos, should be extended from 10 years to 55 years. Shahnaz Akbar, a fertility expert at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, explains what has changed in the science of preserving eggs from when the law was originally passed.

Sniffing Out How To Save African Wild Dogs One of the most endangered mammals on Earth, African wild dogs are known for their oversized ears, social bonds, and highly efficient hunting style. That predatory nature is now contributing to their threatened status, as their territory in sub-Saharan Africa increasingly overlaps with human farmers, who often use poison or other lethal deterrents to protect their livestock from wild dogs and other predators. Producer Christie Taylor talks to carnivore biologist Gabi Fleury about their research on African wild dogs and other threatened wildlife, and how thoughtful applications of technology could help solve conflicts between farmers and hungry predators—hopefully saving dogs' lives. Plus, she talks about what it's like to make it into conservation biology, after a lifetime of dreaming about it. See A Spotted Lanternfly? Squash It! If you live in Pennsylvania or any of its surrounding environs, you've probably seen a really interesting looking bug in the past few years: the spotted lanternfly. Around this time of year, it's in its nymph stage. But when fully grown, these lanternflies sound a little like the joke—they're black and white and red all over. They've also got spots, as their name suggests. The charming news about how interesting they look is offset by the bad news: They are an invasive species. And they frighten crop farmers because they have a taste for just about anything, and a fondness for grapes, which could have dramatic economic consequences.  Many states have a unified stance on what to do if you spy a spotted lanternfly—stomp them out. But is that an effective way to stop their spread? Joining Ira to chat about stomping techniques and lanternfly biology is Julie Urban, associate research professor in entomology at Penn State University, in State College, Pennsylvania. Listening To Shells, An Oracle Of Ocean Health If you're a beach person, few things are more relaxing than slowly wandering along the shore, looking for seashells. Your goal might be a perfect glossy black mussel shell, or a daintily-fluted scallop, or a more exotic shell full of twists and spirals, like a queen conch. The human fascination with seashells dates back to prehistory. Shell trumpets have been found in Mayan temples. Shell beads abound in the remains of the midwestern metropolis of Cahokia. And the Calusa Kingdom, in what is now Florida, literally built their civilization on shells.  But seashells are more than just a beachgoer's collector's item. They're homes to living creatures known as mollusks, built through a complex process called biomineralization. They're also a harbinger of environmental change—and warming seas and acidifying oceans could change the outlook for shells around the world.  Environmental journalist Cynthia Barnett joins Ira to talk about the biology, history, and environmental significance of the seashell. She's the author of the new book, The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Ocean.

He reveals to the guys how he felt on draft night as he dropped further and further – and why he low-key wished he hadn’t worn his Gucci suit that day. Then it’s all about the league. He talks about waiting to play his first year, putting everyone on skates during his MVP year, breaking records, and why he ain’t even close to where he wants to be. MultimediaLIVE — The makers of "Dynasties", BBC Earth's five-part series on the epic lives of five animal families, spent years filming with the African wild dogs, or "painted wolves" as they are now widely known, in the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. "Painted Wolves", one episode in the series narrated by David Attenborough, follows the story of a family of African wild dogs as they battle a rival pack for territory and food on a wide floodplain along the Zambezi River. The episode is an epic production in every way. During long periods on location, the crew heard and saw animal behaviour that had never been witnessed before. But to capture that they had to endure punishing heat and humidity, lashing thunderstorms in the rainy season and days that stretched into weeks when they had not one sighting of the dogs. They also had to be on their feet, with cameras and microphones, in a place crawling with opportunistic predators such as hyenas, crocodiles and lions. The park is one of Africa's secret gems, a fertile habitat of dense thickets of acacia, mahogany, fig and ebony trees in whose glades gather elephants, eland, zebra, buffalo, kudu, and lots of impala. The antelope in turn support the predators: lions, hyenas, leopards and, of course, the painted wolves. This family drama ends on a truly beautiful note as the dogs do something that has never before been heard. Listen on. Dynasties on BBC Planet Earth · Vundu Camp in Mana Pools National Park
