The Greek myth of the Great Flood begins, as Zeus informs the other Olympian gods of his encounter on earth with the evil king Lycaon. Happy Halloween! In this special episode of The LIUniverse, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome back archaeology expert Hannah Liu, MEd to bring a scientific eye to the holiday and some of its most familiar denizens: witches, werewolves, zombies, black cats and even the Great Galactic Ghoul! As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing: Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). You'll learn all about this visitor from the Oort Cloud, including how we know where it came from. Hannah talks about how ancient people responded to the arrival of a comet, including how leaders have used them for their own political purposes, and Charles brings up the inclusion of Halley's Comet on the Bayeux tapestry. Then it's time for Chuck to introduce our theme for this special episode: how the superstitions of the past interact with the mysteries of science. You'll hear from Hannah about the history of Halloween and its beginning as the Druidic celebration of Sawen (or Samhain) marking the end of the harvest season. Jumping ahead in history, we look at the Salem Witch Trials of the 17th Century, and the “science” that was used to condemn innocent young women to death for behaviors the powers that be disapproved of. You'll also get serious answers to spooky questions like “Do full moons affect behavior?” (We're talking the behavior of moths, sea turtles and humans, rather than werewolves, although we do actually get into the possible origins of the wolfman myth as embodied in the Greek myth of Zeus and Lycaon with a minor digression into D&D and legendary DJ Wolfman Jack.) After witches and werewolves, what else could we talk about next than zombies? In this case, natural zombie spiders created by the sting of a parasitic Tarantula Hawk wasp, or zombie ants that have been infected by the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. And yes, somehow The Walking Dead and The Last of Us shamble into the discussion, although regarding the latter, Allen explains why cordyceps probably couldn't survive in a human host. Next up, we look at the connection between black cats and the holiday. Hannah brings up the traditions of cats as “Witch's Familiars” and shapeshifters, and Chuck reminds us of the moment when we saw a cat transform into Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. You'll hear about how STS-13, which was slated to be the thirteenth mission of the Space Shuttle, was renamed STS-41-C, in an attempt to avoid any superstition or reminder of the ill-fated Apollo 13. There was an alternate mission patch that featured an illustration of the shuttle landing under a giant black cat, referencing the mission's original designation, STS-13; and that the day the mission returned was April 13, 1984, which was a Friday the 13th. Speaking of space, Hannah asks Chuck about the concept of “The Great Galactic Ghoul,” the fictitious space monster blamed for the failure of nearly every probe sent to Mars by the Soviet Union, Japan, and even NASA between 1988 and 1999. Out of 10 missions, only 2 US probes landed successfully on the Red Planet. Since then, while the Ghoul did claim a few more victims including two missions by the UK, it seems to have gone into hiding, since the US has had multiple successful missions, as has China with their Tianwen lander and Zhurong rover, India, Russia, the European Space Agency, and the UAE. Finally, to end our special HaLIUween episode, Chuck brings up Albert Einstein's term, “Spooky Action at a Distance,” which he coined derisively to describe the physics concept known as quantum entanglement that he dismissed but has since been proven to exist. Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan discussed BOOK 21 of the Iliad: Achilles Fights the River.“Come friend, you too must die. Why moan about it so? […] Even for me, I tell you, death and strong force of fate are waiting.”Achilles (21.119).CHECK OUT OUR GUIDE TO THE ILIAD.93. What happens in book twenty-one?The Trojans are in full retreat. Achilles drives half the Trojan army back toward Troy over the plains, but the other half is driven into the Xanthus river (21.09). Achilles, who leaps into the waters, slaughters Trojans until his arm grows tired—at which point he captures twelve Trojans for Patroclus' funeral (21.30). Achilles, “insane to hack more flesh” (21.37), returns to the river and kills Lycaon, a Trojan hugging his knees for mercy (21.131). Achilles kill Asteropaeus, son of the river god Axius, who was ambidextrous and fought with two spears (21.185). The river Xanthus takes human shape, and the river-god cries out to Achilles: “All my lovely rapids are crammed with corpses now… Leave me alone… I am filled with horror!” (21.250)Achilles agrees, but then overhears the river-god Xanthus asking Apollo to help the Trojans (21.258). Achilles plunges into the “river's heart” to war against him (21.264), and Xanthus beats and batters Achilles down with roaring waves (21.281). Achilles cries out to Zeus to not let him die like some pig-boy who failed to ford the river (21.319), and Poseidon and Athena save him (21.325). Xanthus tries to attack Achilles again on the flooded corpse-ridden plains of Troy (21.370), but Hera sends Hephaestus to save him (21.377). The god of fire scorches the plains consuming the water and corpses alike (21.396). Xanthus cries out to Hera, and Hephaestus relents (21.418).Zeus was “delighted” to see the gods in conflict (21.442). Athena once again defeats Ares (21.462) and then batters down Aphrodite when she tries to help him (21.484). Poseidon challenges Apollo, but Apollo refuses to fight (21.527). Artemis, his sister, mocks Apollo and, having caught the attention of Hera, is subsequently beaten down by Zeus' consort (21.545). Hermes tells Leto he will not fight her and allows her to take her daughter, Artemis, up to Olympus (21.568). Apollo heads to Troy to help them not fall to the Achaeans (21.592). The book ends with Apollo saving Agenor from Achilles, but then taking on the appearance of the Trojan and leading Achilles on a chase away from Troy (21.657). 94. Is Achilles becoming more god-like?The increasing rage of Achilles is presented as a sort of deification. We have already seen him reject mortal food only to be fed by immortal ambrosia (19.412), and end of the last book linked his rage with being like a god (20.558). Book twenty-one continues the theme of tethering Achilles' increasing rage with becoming more god-like.[1] Notably, in his ascending rage, Achilles the mortal elects to take on a minor god, the river-god Xanthus (21.264). One is tempted here to present Achilles' rage as something unnatural, inhuman that is repulsive particularly to a god of nature.[2] Achilles' ascendency to godhood via his rage shows its limitations, as he is conquered by the river-god (21.308). We should note that for him to die as a “pig-boy” would be an ignoble death in contradistinction to his elected fate to win everlasting glory in Troy. Achilles is saved by Hephaestus at Hera's command or rather the Olympian...

The story of Lycaon (also spelled Lykaion, Lykaon) has been told by many dating back to Ancient Greece, where it was attested in works like Pausanias' Description of Greece, Apollodorus' Library, and Hyginus' Astronomica, and across centuries and civilizations through works like Ovid's masterpiece Metamorphoses. Lycaon's attempt to deceive the gods leads to a terrifying transformation, which many have described as the oldest depiction of a werewolf, wolf-man, or lycanthrope. The story of Lycaon, his test of the god Zeus, and his transformation as punishment is not just a great scary story; it provides insight into Ancient Greek customs of morality such hubris and as hospitality (Xenia.) Like the best of gothic and modern horror, the story of Lycaon explores the fine line between man and monster. In this week's show, we kick off the Halloween season with a deep-dive on the culturally diverse phenomena of the werewolf, its profoundly ancient origins and how it evolved into the beloved horror trope we enjoy today. In the free section of the show we discuss its ancient association with war, rites of passage, its adoption into pagan mythology, the medieval Christian witch-hunts and the important role it played in secret shamanic folk practices from all over the European continent. In the extended version of the show we discuss the good werewolves or Benandanti as they fought evil witches of Satan, how this deeply confused the inquisitors who recorded it, how medical lycanthropy works, the multiple ancient eye-witness accounts of dog-headed people from around the world, early esoteric Christianity, the cenocephaly of Saint Christopher and what it all has to do with the Egyptian deities Anubis and of course Wepwawet. Tuesday, 7 February 2023 they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. Acts 14:6 Note: the NKJV doesn't do a great job of translating this verse. Instead, it reads, “having become aware, they fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region” (CG). This will be used for the commentary. With trouble brewing in Iconium and a violent attempt made by both the Gentiles and the Jews to stone Paul and Barnabas, it next says, “having become aware.” Without telling the details, we see that Paul and Barnabas somehow were apprised of the plotting of those opposed to their message. Because of this, “they fled to the cities of Lycaonia.” Of this area, Charles Ellicott provides a remarkable description – “The very name Lycaonia, interpreted traditionally as Wolf-land (the local legend derived it from Lycaon, who had been transformed into a wolf), represented but too faithfully the character of the inhabitants. The travellers were also losing the protection which a Roman citizen might claim in a Roman province, Lycaonia, which had been annexed in A.D. 17 to the Roman province of Galatia, having been assigned by Caligula to Antiochus, King of Commagene. So wild a country was hardly likely to attract Jewish settlers; and there is no trace in St. Luke's narrative of the existence of a synagogue in either of the two cities. For the first time, so far as we know, St. Paul had to begin his work by preaching to the heathen. Even the child of a devout Jewish mother had grown up to manhood uncircumcised (see Note on Acts 16:3).” This is the only time that the area of Lycaonia is mentioned in Scripture. As stated by Ellicott, the name comes from lukos, a wolf. Even to this day, the name inspires movies about people that have transformed into wolves. Of this area, two main cities are named, “Lystra and Derbe.” Both names are introduced here. The meaning of the names isn't certain. Along with visiting these cities, the apostles also evangelized “the surrounding region.” Charles Ellicott continues his narrative of the area, saying – “Of the two towns named, Lystra was about forty miles to the south-east of Iconium, Derbe about twenty miles further to the east. The former, which lies to the north of a lofty conical mountain, the Kara-dagh (=Black Mountain) is now known as Bin-bir-Kilisseh, i.e., ‘the thousand and one churches,' from the ruins that abound there. The addition of ‘the region that lieth round about' suggests the thought that the cities were not large enough to supply a sufficient field of action. The work in the country villages must obviously—even more than in the cities—have been entirely among the Gentiles. Among the converts of this region, and probably of this time, we may note the names of Timotheus of Lystra (see Note on Acts 16:1), and Gaius, or Caius, of Derbe (Acts 20:4).” Of the actions of these apostles, it is common to read commentaries that say their travels are in accord with Matthew 10:23 – “When they persecute you in this city, flee to another.” This sounds appealing. The apostles were persecuted in Iconium and so they took the words of the Lord to heart and went to evangelize another city. Unfortunately, this fails to consider the continued words of the same verse from Matthew – “For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.” The entire context of the passage from Matthew refers to Israel. The continued words of Matthew 10:23 clearly indicate that Israel was the subject of the command. Therefore, it is wholly inappropriate to use this verse in Acts as a fulfillment of the apostles' obedience to the command of Matthew 10:23. Rather, they are doing what the Lord instructed as is recorded in Acts 1:8 – “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” These men had been sent out as missionaries and they are doing what missionaries are to do in the context of the church age. As apostles, they bore an additional set of gifts and abilities as the word was being established. Now that it has been compiled, the word is the tool to be used for the evangelization of the nations. Life application: On the morning of preparing this commentary, a video was received entitled “Iranians Meeting Jesus in Dreams, Experiencing Radical Transformation.” If this were true, there would be no need to evangelize. But the Bible says otherwise. How convenient it is to say that Jesus is popping into people's heads at night and converting them. It sure takes the pressure off those who are too timid (or too lazy) to do what the Bible instructs. God has given us the tools we need to evangelize the world, He has empowered us to do so, and yet we sit and watch videos that are contrary to the very message that we are supposed to be proclaiming. Someday, all will have to stand before the Lord and give an account of what they did with their time. Those who make up false stories of visions, dreams, and conversations with Jesus will have to face Him someday. Be wise and discerning. Get out and tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ. This is how people are evangelized. It will not come about any other way. Heavenly Father, help us to be reasonable in our approach to Your word. May we not take liberties with it that are contrary to its message. Rather, help us to accept it as written, follow through with what is instructed, and be willing to share the good news with those we encounter. It is what You have instructed. May we be obedient to Your word. Amen.

As long as humans have been looking up to the sky, we have been fascinated by the moon. And once a month, that mysterious jewel in the sky appears big and bright and full, giving us even more to wonder about. Lycanthropy is the transformation of a person into a wolf and stories of this curse date all the way back to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Werewolves even show up in Greek mythology in the Legend of Lycaon. Since these stories have endured, it's no surprise that they showed up in movies very early. The first movie featuring a lycanthrope was The Werewolf from 1913. Unfortunately, it was lost to fire and can never be seen again. But a few years later, a silent western called Wolf Blood (1925) appeared and can still be viewed. The 1935 film Wolf Blood starring Henry Hull gave us some of the tropes we still use today, such as the curse being passed on by a bite, transformations occurring because of a full moon, and that the cursed will try to lock themselves up to protect others. The popularity has never disappeared in cinema. We still remember some legendary and groundbreaking films such as Universal's The Wolf Man (1941) and An American Werewolf in London (1981) which started a new chapter in special effects. Plus, a few fun ones like Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf (1985) Check out some classic (and wonderfully cheesy) films from Full Moon Entertainment. Or some classic music about our lunar neighbor like Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty, Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival, or Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. But the movies aren't the only place you can see people howling. Cartoons gave us the Groovy Ghoulies and Fang Face. And even our breakfast is not immune to the moon when you eat Frute Brute cereal. What's your favorite story of the moon? Do you stay indoors when the moon is full? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Fly Me to the Moon” will get a special mention on the show.
Werewolf myths have been around perhaps even longer than those associated with vampires and zombies. For example, Ancient Greek mythology tells of Lycaon, a man transformed into a wolf after eating human flesh. Furthermore, the word werewolf is thought to be derived from the Old English wer, meaning "man." The Epic of Gilgamesh is a legendary poem from 2100-1200 BCE. It is the 2nd oldest known religious text in existence and is noted as the earliest form of literature ever. It is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia and is said to have had a heavy influence on Homer and his Iliad and Odyssey. It is also considered to be the first mention of lycanthropy… the werewolf is ancient. Werewolves also appear in early Greek mythology, such as in the Legend of Lycaon, where Lycaon, son of Pelasgus, is turned into a wolf by an angry Zues. And, of course there is early Nordic mention as well, as in the Saga of the Volsungs where a father and son come across a pair of wolf hides and, after donning them, turn into ravenous wolf-men that go on a killing rampage.A werewolf or Lycanthrope (or lycan for short) is a human with the ability… or curse, to shape-shift into a wolf or Human-wolf hybrid either by intent or under the power of a curse or infection (usually transferred via bite or scratch from another cursed or infected were). Classically, this shift comes by the draw or power of a full moon. Join us for a deep dive into the mystery and legend of the Werewolf!Link to everything! So here we are, I can't believe it's taken me this long to cover this all too familiar topic: Werewolves. But I fought with the best place to start, so I figured why not right at the beginning? In Greek Mythology there was a figure who went by the name King Lycaon - and the name should be a dead giveaway as to what he became. The king was the ruler of Arcadia before it was called as such, and he did a very bad thing. One day, he decided to do something that would royally anger Zeus, which is never a smart move. For his punishment, he had lightning bolts (naturally) thrown by Zeus to demolish his home, among other things. But that wasn't enough, and he was eventually cursed to be a wolf that resembled his human appearance. That's if you belief Ovid's recollection of the story. Some say it was actually some of Lycaon's 50 sons that did the deed, damning their father. In the end though, the result was the same and Lycaon was transformed into a wolf, at least for nine years. Should he not consume human flesh within that time, he could have his humanity restored. The question is, could he fight his primal urges, or succumb to them. It's an interesting story, and one that has a ton of backstory, but thankfully I was able to narrow it down, and condense a lot of it down for you. There were stories around the same time, if not a little before of Ishtar turning one of her lovers into a wolf in the Epic of Gilgamesh, but that's a topic for another day. Ultimately, the werewolf legend is one that transcends time, and has carried on through the ages. For most of human history, depending on the culture of the victors, enemy combatants on the losing side in a battle who had surrendered and been taken as prisoners of war could expect to be either slaughtered or enslaved. Early Roman gladiators could be prisoners of war, categorised according to their ethnic roots as Samnites, Thracians, and Gauls (Galli). Homer's Iliad describes Greek and Trojan soldiers offering rewards of wealth to opposing forces who have defeated them on the battlefield in exchange for mercy, but their offers are not always accepted; see Lycaon for example.

Miffmoths! This week’s episode is the Ancient Greek version of a folklore tale we’re all familiar – The werewolf. The story features Lycaon, the child scarifying King of Arcadia who finds himself upsetting Zeus. Zeus responds in the only way he knows how...going crazy, throwing thunderbolts and turning people into stuff.
