Today, host Alex Ball sits down with Chirstian Flickinger of Renegade Acres to discuss their certified organic heirloom vegetable farm and their organic seed business, Garden Hoard. They are a year round operation growing produce through the spring-fall for sale to farmers markets while saving and processing seeds for winter packaging and sales. Their business started as a seed business, Garden Hoard, and grew into the actual production farm Renegade Acres. Katie, who started the seed business, is a mastermind of planning and her family history with saving seeds was the start of the business. A major discussion of the interview is work life balance, and Katie & Christian are working really hard to enjoy their lives outside of farming. By prioritizing experiences and time together outside of the farm they are finding balance in their lives and making their farm more productive. Farming is a full time lifestyle that can easily consume you, and they are working hard to not let that happen. Follow Christian & Katie on Instagram and check out their incedible seed website! This is the first episode with young graduates met recently at New Designers 2024 in London. Alex graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a second-class BA (Hons) in Product Design. I was struck by the simplicity of his design project and the clear communication of intent within his work. It is clear that Alex is very passionate about combating climate change and helping people to live more sustainably; his comment that "I want to utilise my design background to help to bring solutions to this sector" is, in my experience, representative of a significant percentage of his generation who recognises the massive challenges facing mankind and wants to be part of the solution, not a contributor to the problem. In the conversation, you will hear how Alex has mapped out a pathway to becoming a talented air source heat pump engineer. He is undoubtedly a talented and driven young designer, and I know he would welcome 'reachouts' from anyone who feels they may be able to contribute to his journey. Alex Ball started his farm when he was 14, so he's had a lot of opportunities to refine the model over the years! He shares how and why he has moved the farm many times, and how he landed on the flexible CSA model he's now using. This model allows for flexibility for the farmer by sourcing some of the produce from other growers. Plus, the credit-based system allows a wider group of people to participate, who might not otherwise be able to commit to a full box of food every week.We also talk about what last mile logistics is, and how Alex has used it to make CSA drop off efficient for him with out-of-home delivery, and efficient for the customer as well by finding dropoff sites in high-traffic locations. He tells us how he has made extensive use of plugins in a Wordpress website to get a customized CSA interface that lets his customers choose exactly what they want from week to week. Alex is also one of the hosts of the No-Till Market Garden Podcast, and we talk about how he found his voice as a podcaster interviewing fellow farmers. Marketing requires a combination of data and storytelling to motivate people to take a desired action, whether that is making a purchase, supporting a cause, or providing their email address. Procurement can leverage a marketing-esque combination of information and storytelling to build consensus, increase influence, and even control the narrative when plans go awry. In this episode of The Sourcing Hero podcast, Host Kelly Barner welcomes Alex Ball. Alex has spent most of his career in marketing and demand generation, helping companies connect with and engage their target personas. He has also had the opportunity to work with procurement and has seen some ways that his marketing knowledge can be applied inside of companies to increase procurement's influence. In this interview, Alex applies his experience in marketing to some of the most common situations and challenges faced by procurement: Sharing information beyond the numbers to better represent procurement's true impact Winning over skeptics and new team members to the advantages of working with procurement Adding healthy self-promotion of procurement's internal messaging without coming across as arrogant or boastful Links: Alex Ball on LinkedIn

Alan R Pearlman was responsible for some of the greatest sounding and most intuitive synthesizers of the modern age, many of which are still highly sought after or emulated to this day. Inspired, as so many were, by hearing Wendy Carlos's 'Switched on Bach', he founded Tonus in 1969, a company that would soon become ARP Instruments, and began producing synthesizers such as the legendary ARP 2500, 2600 and Odyssey.Since his passing in 2019 at the age of 93, his daughter, Dina, has been building the Alan R Pearlman Foundation, an organisation that seeks to preserve her father's legacy and enable as many people as possible to get hands-on with his inventions. As with all not-for-profits, Dina has faced numerous challenges, but with the help of the likes of Jean Michel Jarre, Herbie Hancock and many other fans of Alan's work, the Foundation is beginning to realise its objectives with great success.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:18 - The Alan R. In her early years, she spent time playing in rock and roll bands, as well as dance and theatre. For the past thirty years, she has worked as a versatile visual arts and design professional, creative director, and educator. She has also worked extensively in photography, graphics and web design for several decades, and has a broad understanding of visual communications media. In the last few years before his illness, Alan Pearlman started to re-examine the brave new world of synthesizers that exists today, many decades after his iconic and groundbreaking 12 years as the inventor and founder of ARP Synthesizers. During this time, he brought his daughter into the conversation. After his death in January 2019, Dina realised the need of keeping his legacy and passion alive, and with the help and encouragement of many of his former colleagues as well as the wonderful Michelle Moog-Koussa, she started the Alan R. Despite the risk of pivoting their business, Lindsay Steele of Garden Fort in Dexter, Michigan (outside of Ann arbor), chose to switch from farmers markets to direct-to-retail sales and ended up reaping unexpected rewards - from more time with his family to increased profitability. In this episode, Alex Ball of Old City Acres and Lindsay dig deep into successfully shifting from farmers markets to direct-to-retail sales, selecting profitable crops for year-round production, how clever packaging and branding set their products apart, scaling-up and effectively managing farm labor, and how all of those things contributed to a better work/family balance while farming. Also mentioned in this episode... Follow Garden Fort on Instagram. They use Rimol Greenhouses Nor'Easter series for year-round greens production. Consider focusing more on high-profit-margin crops like salad greens for year-round production and potential wholesale opportunities. Evaluate your farm's workflow (i.e. wash/pack) and systems (i.e. tarping, reduced tillage) to increase efficiency for a better work/life balance. Consider the benefits of incentivising well-trained and returning farm workers and how that can contribute to the overall success of your farm. The Rough Draft Farmstead No-Till Farm Tour! Hey folks, it's Jackson and today I've got a bonus episode of Collab Farm with Mike & Armonda of Rose Hill Farm Stop in Bloomington, Indiana. I attended a session with them at the Organic Association of Kentucky conference '23 and was really impressed. You'll see why in a minute... Now, you may have heard the last episode of The No-Till Market Garden Podcast with the great Alex Ball speaking with the owners of the Argus Farm Stop in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and thought, 'yeah, yeah, yeah... that's great you can do that there, but probably not here.' That is exactly why I love Rose Hill Farm Stop. They spent some time at Argus and have adapted the model to be a producer coop and replicated it in a more rural area with a lower median income. We talk about how they got the idea off of the ground, how it functions as a producer coop, how they have solved some of the logistical challenges, and what the farm stop looks like a little more than a year into operation. You can support our work by picking up a copy of The Living Soil Handbook, becoming a Patreon member, joining our free online growers community, or just sharing this episode with another farm friend you'd want to start a producer coop with? Just sayin'... Remember, many hands make light work.

Hey everyone, it's Alex Ball with another episode of the No-Till Market Garden Podcast! I'm really excited to share a conversation with you all from Adam of Country Valley Farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the interview we get into building new no-till beds with deep woodchips, animal pressure on the farm, the realities of farming with a full-time job, and producing garlic for the wholesale market. A big thanks to Adam for sitting down to share all the work he and his family are doing at CVF. He has such a love for not only ecological farming, but for feeding his community and sharing the positivity that comes with being in touch with the land. I was really impressed by his deep wood chip compost method for building organic matter and I think i'm going to trial his technique on my own farm. If you want to learn more about their farm or are just looking for organic seed garlic, check out their website and their social media for more information. Thanks so much for listening! Welcome BACK to yet another exciting season of The No-Till Market Garden Podcast. As mentioned at the end of last season, I--Jesse--will not be hosting this year. My role now is more of a producer for the suite of podcasts and work we publish at No-Till Growers. I'm excited to introduce the second host, Alex Ball of Old City Acres! We are big fans of Alex's work and in this mini-interview we muse on the progression and evolution of our respective farms. He's gong to bring a lot to the host seat because of his interest in the details surrounding what it takes to run a successful farm business, which is something I felt was lacking in my own approach. Alex is someone you can listen to and talk to for hours, he's a lot of fun, and we can't wait for his contribution to the podcast. Alex's first interview will be coming out next Monday. On the podcast today we have Alex Ball. Alex is a Lead Software Engineer at Mindgrub, a digital agency in Baltimore, Maryland. His website leadership experience continues to inform his decision-making today, especially for training clients and making the block editor as easy to use as possible, and that, in essence, is the subject of the podcast today. During WordCamp US 2022, Alex gave a lightning talk in which he laid out some suggestions on how the block editor can be made more straightforward for clients. Most regular WordPress users have become accustomed to the way the block editor works. Over time, we've understood how things work and where we need to go in the UI to alter things. For many clients, this familiarity simply does not exist, it's confusing and mistakes occur. Alex talks about solutions to this problem, and he comes at it from different angles. Maybe you lock certain features down so that only certain users can achieve specific tasks. Or it might be that you need to take time to educate your clients more about the block editor and how it works.
