RIP, Maifeld Derby. Viel Spaß beim Hören!
King Hannah is an indie-rock duo from Liverpool consisting of singer and songwriter Hannah Merrick and guitarist Craig Whittle. Their latest album, Big Swimmer, seems to be the result of Merrick's observations after touring around the United States, where it wasn't the big cities or expansive vistas that inspired her songs, but the little moments and conversations and observations – details that inspire songs that can be drily funny, unsettling, or both. She also toggles between a kind of pitched speech and outright singing over moody electrified rockenroll - sometimes fuzz-drenched, sometimes jangly. King Hannah plays in-studio. Set list: 1. New York Let's Do Nothing 2. Crème Brûlée 3. Big Swimmer

Felices fiestas a tod@s. Dirige Manuel Pinazo. Suenan: Phoebe Bridges - Have yourself a Merry Little christmas Remi Wolf - Last Christmas Clairo - Glory In The Snow Kurt Vile - Must Be Santa girl in red - Two Queens in a King Sizes Bed King Hannah - Blue Christmas Papooz/Sofia Bolt - Honest Bleachers - Merry Christmas, Please Don't Call Reverend And The Makers - Late Night Phone Call Villagers ft Lisa Hannigan - The Little Drummer Boy Julia Jacklin - Baby Jesus Is Nobody's Baby Now Bright Eyes ft. Just like the many who welcomed Jesus as King, so we welcome Jesus into our world, often forgetting he wants to welcome us into his. When will we give up on our way of doing things and remember, we cling to the hope that it has all been done! “Behold, I make all things new …” This is the promise that we cling to, uttered from the mouth of God. The question is will our life be found in Jesus? You see there are two realities we can cling to. The reality of God – that is happening right here and right now. One that transcends being proven and can only be trusted. Or we can default to the reality we can create. And honestly, when we look at our world we have to ask, how well has humanity done in creating our reality? Our new world? This was what was at stake during the triumphal entry on Palm Sunday. Some wanted Jesus to be this or that – they made him in their image to suit their vision of the world. They trusted in themselves. Yet Jesus came to invite others to trust in the world he has created and sustained. Thank you for joining us today! In which the Curmudgeons end their epic series of odes to the music of a nine-year period that transformed everything--and then some--in popular music. By 1972, the hangover from the revolutionary vibes of the 1960s had subsided, and that era's outgrowth of freedom and experimentation truly started to blossom. The Rolling Stones filtered American roots music through a dirty, sweaty prism to create a true rock masterpiece. David Bowie perfected glam rock and intergalactic theater to create a masterpiece of his own. And Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Curtis Mayfield set Black music on a wilder, more lush course. We explore all of that and much more during this episode. In which The Curmudgeons stand up to the man and deliver the best of the best of a special era for both cinema and music, when African-Americans anti-heroes lit up the screens and imaginations of a generation of young Black people. And also young Black artists, who cranked out stunning funk, soul and disco anthems to accompany these films. Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and The Staple Singers were among the legends who contributed to this electrifying canon.

This week on arts24 we welcome Tom McRae, an English Francophile who gained musical recognition in the early 2000s thanks to delicate songs like "You Cut Her Hair" or "End of the World News". He's just released his new album "Étrange Hiver", in which he sings many tracks in French and invites a number of French artists to collaborate with him. We also welcome Liverpool-based rising duo King Hannah, who are set to release their second album "Big Swimmer" at the end of May. Plus, we discuss the country music comeback of Beyoncé.

King Hannah - "Big Big Baby" from the 2022 album I'm Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me on City Slang. While the duo that make up King Hannah - Craig Whittle and Hannah Merrick - hail from Liverpool, the music they make feels more fitting for the deep American south. Taking inspiration from the dark, mystical elements of that region, the band makes smokey, heavy Americana with tinges of dusky, rambling post-rock. Our Song of the Day, “Big Big Baby,” epitomizes this, utilizing slow, ominous drums, fuzzy guitars, and Merrick's sultry vocals for an ominous effect. But these tones belie the song's darkly humorous lyrics. Lines like “I heard you got a lady pregnant, well I can only wish her well /‘Cause soon you'll have a bigger baby, in the family than yourself” and “I hope you choke on a dumpling, at least that would be mildly fun” read as the punchlines of some harsh burns. The video for the song leans into the elements of the songs sound rather than lyrics, with Merrick slow dancing in a dark, slighted distorted room. The clip was directed by Whittle, proving the duo are a creative force to be reckoned with. Watch it at the link below.
