For 40 years, Mike Wold enjoyed success as a consultant, leadership coach, financial director, project manager, and adjunct instructor. Then he retired. Mike quickly discovered just how much of his identity was connected to his success. He reoriented his identity around his being, and before long, God started calling him into a different kind of work - helping veterans heal from their psychological and spiritual wounds. As a US Navy veteran himself, this was work Mike understood well.Today, Mike is the volunteer Arizona Regional Coordinator for the Institute for Healing of Memories, an organization that conducts weekend Healing of Memories Workshops throughout the world. He's worked with more than 450 veterans, listening to their stories and encouraging them toward healing. He's worked with churches, teaching them how to help the veterans in their congregations feel a true sense of belonging. He's worked with families and spouses, parents and children. In 2019, Mike was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame for his volunteer work with veterans. We're honored to have Mike join us for this important episode on faith, war, and healing moral wounds. Listeners will hear about Josh's early life, his time in the army, sustaining a head injury, and his life experiences managing the injury. Josh was deployed in Korea, and then was stationed in Kansas to set up the brigade. Josh was again deployed in Iraq, where he sustained a head injury from the shock wave of an indirect fire attack. He suffered from TBI, post-concussion syndrome and headaches, which he still experiences to this day. Josh identifies suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Josh made headlines in 2017 after he rescued a stray cat, Scout. Josh attributes Scout for saving his life. Click the link to watch the heartwarming film of the mutual rescue between Josh and Scout. Josh currently seeks support from the VA and counsels Veterans at the VA. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. The most common type of head trauma from recent conflicts are blast wave injuries. Two of the most prevalent problems reported by military personnel following traumatic brain injury are headache and photosensitivity (light sensitivity), which commonly occur together in migraine-like headaches. The VA provides care and support for Veterans suffering from TBI. All Veterans who served in combat are screened for TBI. Treatment options for TBI include cognitive, speech, physical, and occupational therapy, coinciding with medication and assistive devices. Click the link to learn more about TBI treatment at the VA. VA also offers counseling services to Veterans to support treatments of related conditions. In the second half of episode six, Levi and Brandon interview Rob Otto. Listeners will hear about Rob's early life, career in the military, and life after service and his experience with mental health. Rob discusses PTSD among Veterans and suicide prevention at the VA. Rob Otto is an Iowa native and Air Force Veteran. He began his military career in the Air Force ROTC and received his undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Iowa. Rob served in active duty for six years as a Captain, where he was a personnel officer leading teams, project management and administrative work. He attended the police academy and worked as a police officer. Rob is now the Suicide Prevention Coordinator and a social worker at the Iowa City VA where he counsels Veterans. The VA is dedicated to changing the stigma surrounding mental health. Approximately 20% of Veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans can receive treatment for PTSD at the VA through trauma-focused psychotherapies and antidepressant medication. The VA tailors treatment regiments specific to the Veteran's key concerns and needs. PTSD often coincides with other mental health illnesses.

Pull the Pin Already (Episode #1): Jim and Mike discuss their views on "Veterans who speak for all Veterans" and how they feel about this. Come and check us out and voice your concern as well and see if you agree or disagree with Veterans speaking for ALL Veterans in today's society. Leave a comment for us to discuss.

Patricia Axelrod is a military scientist for peace and the Director of The Desert Storm Think Tank and ALL Veterans' Advocate - a project dedicated to analyzing and reducing the impacts and consequences of war to civilians and soldiers alike. She is a past recipient of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Research and Writing Award for her analysis of the modern electronic battlefield as well as a Project Censored Award. She has testified before Presidential Advisory Committees on issues of Persian Gulf Illness and other veteran health issues and her work has been incorporated into Congressional Research projects as well GAO efforts. Temporarily residing in Illinois Axelrod has conducted in-theater bomb damage assessment post Desert Storm throughout Iraq (wherein she was held captive by the Hussein gov't) as well as from Budapest to Kosovo following American warfare against Kosovo. Her work on behalf of veterans serves to obtain medical treatment for individual sick and dying veterans otherwise deprived of care by the VA. Her long-term experience battling with the VA leads her to believe that the VA healthcare system is corrupt and broken beyond repair and therefore should be abolished and replaced with medicare and/or another civilian healthcare system.
