SynopsisAt 6:05 p.m. on today's date in 2007, the Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, plunging dozens of cars and trucks into the Mississippi River. Thirteen people died. Investigators said a design flaw was to blame, and the event served as a wake-up call about America's crumbling infrastructure. It also inspired a new piece of music. In 2007 Minnesota composer Linda Tutas Haugen had been commissioned to write a piece for solo instrument and organ for performance at the next American Guild of Organists' national convention. Haugen had been looking at various hymn tunes for inspiration when the I-35 bridge collapsed. As she recalled, “I had family members who'd been over the bridge a day before. Many were feeling, ‘It could have been me.' I reread texts of the hymns I had been considering, and there was one that talks about ‘God of hill and plain, o'er which our traffic runs' and ‘wherever God your people go, protect them by your guarding hand.' That inspired my writing.”Haugen scored her new piece for trumpet and organ and titled it “Invocation and Remembrance.” “For me,” said Haugen, “it's a prayer, an invocation for protection, and also a remembrance of what happened.”Music Played in Today's ProgramLinda Tutas Haugen Invocation and Remembrance Martin Hodel, trumpet; Kraig Windschitl, organ Augsburg Fortress Music CD (with ISBN: 9780800679118)On This DayBirths1779 - Baltimore lawyer Francis Scott Key, who in 1814 wrote the words of "The Star-Spangled Banner," setting his text to the tune of a popular British drinking song of the day, "To Anacreon in Heaven," written by John Stafford Smith; The text and the tune became the official national anthem by and Act of Congress in 1931;1858 - Austrian composer Hans Rott, in Vienna;1913 - American composer Jerome Moross, in Brooklyn;1930 - British pop song and musical composer Lionel Bart, of "Oliver!" fame, in London;Deaths1973 - Gian-Francesco Maliperio, Italian composer and first editor of collected works of Monteverdi and Vivaldi, age 91, in Treviso;Premieres1740 - Thomas Arne: masque, “Alfred” (containing “Rule, Brittania”), in Clivedon (Gregorian date: August 12);1921 - Hindemith: String Quartet No. 3, Op. 16, by the Amar Quartet (which included the composer on viola) in Donaueschingen, Germany;1968 - Webern: "Rondo" for string quartet, written in 1906, at the Congregation of the Arts at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire;1993 - Ellen Taaffe Zwilich: Concerto for Horn and String Orchestra, at the Bravo! Synopsis Most classical music lovers know and love Dvorak's “New World” Symphony, Opus 95, and his “American” String Quartet, Opus 96, but fewer know the work he wrote next: his String QUINTET, Opus 97. We think that's a shame, since all three rank among the finest things the Czech composer ever wrote. Dvorak's Quintet is also nicknamed the “American” – and for good reason: It was completed in 1893 on today's date in Spillville, Iowa, during the composer's summer vacation in that small, rural community of Czech immigrants, where he and family could escape the noise and bustle of New York City and his duties there at the National Conservatory. Dvorak had been brought to America to teach Americans how to write American music, but, like any good teacher, Dvorak was as eager to LEARN as to teach. In New York, Henry T. Burleigh, a talented African-American Conservatory student taught Dvorak spirituals, and in Spillville, Dvorak eagerly attended performances of Native American music and dance by a group of touring Iroquois Indians. Traces of those influences can be heard in Dvorak's “American” works. In his Quintet, for example, unison melodic lines and striking rhythms seem to echo the Iroquois chants and drums Dvorak heard during his summer vacation in Spillville. Synopsis On today's date in 1935, at the Church of Saint François-Xavier in Paris, organist Geneviève de la Salle gave the first complete performance of the three-movement Suite, Op. 5, by the French composer, teacher, and virtuoso organist Maurice Duruflé. If you sing in a choir or are a fan of choral music, you're probably familiar with Duruflé's serene and tranquil “Requiem,” Op. 9, which premiered some 12 years later. Duruflé's Op. 5 premiered in 1935, his Op. 9 in 1947, so you might reasonably conclude the composer was a slow worker – which he was.  He was also a very self-critical perfectionist whose catalog of works is rather small, but exquisitely crafted.  In all, Duruflé's output comprises less than 15 published works, of which seven are for organ. Duruflé's music is firmly embedded in the French tradition of organ composers like César Franck and Louis Vierne, and orchestral composers like Debussy, Ravel, and Duruflé's own composition teacher, Paul Dukas.  The great French organist Marie-Claire Alain, when asked to describe Duruflé's music, replied "it is a perfectly honest art… He was not an innovator but a traditionalist… Duruflé evolved and amplified the old traditions, making them his own."  Music Played in Today's Program Maurice Durufle (1902-1986) — Organ Suite, Op. 5 (Todd Wilson, o (Schudi organ at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Texas)) Delos 3047 On This Day Births 1752 - Italian composer Muzio Clementi, in Rome; 1878 - English composer Rutland Boughton, in Aylesbury; Deaths 1837 - Irish composer John Field, age 54, in Moscow (Julian date: Jan.11); 1908 - American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell, age 47, in New York; 1981 - American composer Samuel Barber, age 70, in New York; Premieres 1724 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 73 ("Herr, wie du willst, so schicks mit mir") performed on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's first annual Sacred Cantata cycle in Leipzig (1723/24); 1729 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 156 ("Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe") probably performed in Leipzig on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's fourth annual Sacred Cantata cycle (to texts by Christian Friedrich Henrici, a.k.a. Synopsis The year 2000 marked both the arrival of a new millennium and the 250th anniversary of the death of the great German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The International Bach Academy in Stuttgart decided to mark the occasion by commissioning four very different composers to write four new passion settings, one each after the Gospel accounts of the evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A German composer, Wolfgang Rihm, was chosen for the St. Luke Passion; a Russian, Sofia Gubaidulina for St. John's; an Argentine, Osvaldo Golijov for St. Mark's; and a Chinese composer, Tan Dun, for the Passion according to St. Matthew. And on today's date in 2000, Helmuth Rilling conducted the world premiere of Tan Dun's “Water Passion after St. Matthew.” Tan said he was struck by the references to water in St. Matthew's gospel, so his setting includes seventeen large, illuminated bowls of water, positioned on stage in the form of a cross. These divide the chorus, with three percussionists and a group of additional soloists stationed at the four points of this cross. In Tan's “Water Passion,” natural sounds of water mix with a wide range of vocal techniques, including Tuvan throat singing and the stylized virtuosity of Peking Opera. Sowerby wrote hundreds of pieces of church music for organ and chorus, plus chamber and symphonic works, which are only recently receiving proper attention. It’s not that Sowerby was neglected during his lifetime–he won many awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1946–but many seemed “put off” by both his unabashedly Romantic style and his unprepossessing physical appearance. The younger American composer Ned Rorem, who took theory lessons from Sowerby, puts it this way: “Leo Sowerby was … of my parents’ generation, a bachelor, reddish-complexioned and milky skinned, chain smoker of Fatima cigarettes, unglamorous and non-mysterious, likable with a perpetual worried frown, overweight and wearing rimless glasses, earthy, practical, interested in others even when they were talentless; a stickler for basic training, Sowerby was the first composer I knew and the last thing a composer was supposed to resemble.” Music Played in Today's Program Leo Sowerby (1895 – 1968) Classic Concerto David Mulbury, organ; Fairfield Orchestra; John Welsh, cond. Naxos 8.559028 On This Day Births 1582 - Early Italian opera composer Marco da Gagliano, in Gagliano; 1602 - Baptism of English madrigal composer William Lawes, in Salisbury ; He was the younger brother of the more famous English composer Henry Lawes (1696-1662); 1872 - Swedish violinist and composer Hugo Alfvén in Stockholm; 1895 - American organist and composer Leo Sowerby, in Grand Rapids, Mich.; 1899 - Icelandic composer Jón Leifs, in Sólheimar; Deaths 1904 - Czech composer Antonin Dvorák, age 62, in Prague; 1978 - Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian, age 74, in Moscow; Premieres 1786 - Mozart: "The Marriage of Figaro" in Vienna at the Old Burgtheater; 1886 - Franck: "Symphonic Variations" for piano and orchestra, in Paris; 1909 - Rachmaninoff: "The Isle of the Dead," in Moscow, conducted by the composer (Julian date: April 18); 1925 - Piston: Three Pieces for flute, clarinet, and bassoon (his first published work), at the École Normale in Paris, by the Blanquart-Coste-Dherin trio; 1939 - Barber: "The Virgin Martyrs," with students from the Curtis Institute of Music on a CBS Radio broadcast, with the composer conducting; 1971 - Dave Brubeck: oratorio "Truth Has Fallen," at the opening of the Center for the Arts in Midland, Mich.; 1987 - Harrison Birtwistle: "Endless Parade" for trumpet, vibraphone and strings, in Zurich (Switzerland) by the Collegium Musicum conducted by Paul Sacher, with trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger; 2002 - Jennifer Higdon: "Blue Cathedral," by the Curtis Institute Symphony conducted by Robert Spano, commissioned to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Curtis Institute of Music; 2003 - Lukas Foss: Concertino ("Passacaglia, Bachanalia, Passacaglia") for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, by the New York Choral Artists and the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur conducting; Others 1761 - Franz Joseph Haydn begins his 30-year tenure as Second-Kapellmeister at Prince Esterhazy's estate in Eisenstadt; In 1766, Haydn succeeded the much older composer Gregor Joseph Werner as First-Kapellmeister; 1825 - first documented American performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 100 ("Military") at Boylston Hall in Boston, at a benefit concert for Haydn's former pupil, Johann Christian Gottlieb Graupner (1767-1836); 1837 - American premiere of Rossini's opera "Semiramide" in New Orleans; 1938 - The German Reichsmusikkammer (Imperial Ministry of Music) forbids Aryan music instructors to teach pupils of Jewish extraction.

Birgitta Tollan gör självsvåldiga nedslag i musiklivet i sex städer: Reykjavik, New York, Oslo, Helsingfors, Berlin och Köpenhamn. Spellista: Untitled In CoF Minor A Valentine To Sherwood Anderson Mikhail/Gertrude Stein Mikhail.
