Patch Chapel in Stuttgart Germany celebrates the 505th Reformation Day Anniversary.

Today I would like to witness about how faithful God is and how He is always listening even when you don't think He is. My husband, Tony, joined ROTC in college and was commissioned into the Air Force right after his four years of college was over, Although he was enjoying the Air Force, after his four year commitment was up he started looking for a different job. He had always wanted to be a criminal investigator for a government agency. His top choices were the Marshal's or the FBI. He applied to many positions and was often considered for the jobs, but ultimately didn't get hired a lot because veteran's had preferential treatment and although he was in the military, he was not a veteran yet because he was still in the military. I talked with him about getting out of the military and then finding a job but we had three small boys at the time and giving up a steady income and great health care in the hopes of finding his dream job was not something he was willing to do. He searched for several years while we were in New Jersey. There wasn't any real urgency to his search though because he really liked being in the military and was happy in the various jobs he had on base. Then in 2009 we moved to Stuttgart Germany. We were excited for the move as we had lived over seas, in the country of Turkey, a few years earlier and loved it. Tony did not love Germany. He was not happy at his job and he was not happy in Germany. We were supposed to be there three years I think but he was really wanting to go home the whole first year we were there. He was finally settling into Germany and beginning to think it wasn't so bad, when October 2010 came around and our lives changed forever. In the Summer of 2010 we heard there was going to be a reduction in force for Air Force personnel officers that were in Tony's year group. What this means is that they have too many personel officers with the same rank, and they need to let some of them go. Basically the air force was doing a lay off. Tony's bosses told him not to worry. They usually cut the bottom 10%. They look at your performance reports and see who is not performing as good as the rest of them. I am sure they take other things into account, but I don't know what they are. Tony's bosses said he had nothing to worry about because he was always given really high scores on his performance reports. He was always rated #1 our of how ever many officers there were that he worked with. One morning in Oct 2010 Tony went to work and found out his name had been selected to be laid off. It was devastating news. Everyone was astonished. His bosses called to see if there was some mistake. They said there wasn't. This board was different than previous boards. They let a lot of people go that scored high on their performance reviews and they kept a lot of people that others though would surely be let go because they didn't score well at all. Many people said it did not make any sense. They let go some squadron commanders and in order to have that job it means you are in the top 10%. It was confusing and no one understood why they made the decisions they made and yet there was nothing we could do about it. There was no appeals process. None of us could understand what happened and yet, God knew. We were now living in Germany, We had four months to find a new job and to move. Tony had to find a job while living in Germany, so he had to fly back to the states for interviews or take them over the phone. This was a very difficult time for Tony. The uncertainty of the future and how he was going to provide for the family was weighing heavily on him. We did pray together that God would provide and find him a job. We knew God would take care of us and yet there was still that worry, especially as it got closer and closer to the deadline of us having to move. However, even in that we could see God working. For instance, because it was the military saying we had to move, they would pay for the move. We didn't have to worry about how we were going to afford to move back to the states. I believe they also let you keep the medical care for 6 months after you got out of the military until you found another job so we weren't going to be left out in the cold. Although after giving the military 11 years of your life and then being let go, I am sure to Tony it probably felt like they were abandoning him. Tony started applying for jobs right away. In December he went back to the US for a transition class that helps people who are transitioning from the military back to civilian life. While he was back there he got a job interview for a job at Lakenheath England. The job was to be the Mission Support Group Deputy Commander. He said he felt like he had a pretty good interview, he really liked the commander who was interviewing him and it sounded like the job would be something he would really enjoy. He was unsure if he would get the job though because the other person they were interviewing had a lot more experience than he did. The other person was retired Col, so he had over 20 years experience. Right before Tony got on the airplane to come back to Germany he found out they were offering him the job. He was so excited.Although Tony was excited for this job, we really had no idea how much of an answer to prayers it was until we got there and he started working it. Tony had wanted to get out of the military for a few years, but especially that last year and a half, however, he wouldn't just leave the military without having another job because he wanted to be a good provider for our family. All of the sudden there is a situation where he has to leave the military. That part of the story is not great. I know Tony hates the way he left the military and yet it forced him to take the step he had been wanting to take. He absolutely loved the job he went to. It was a promotion. He was a major in the Air Force, and he was a GS 14 in the civilian world, which is equivalent to a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. In his job he was not in the military but everyone he worked with was so he got to have the best of both worlds. His job as deputy Mission Support Group commander meant that he got to over see the workings of the support side of the base. Anything that had to do with the services for the people that worked on base. For instance, the security forces and the fire department, the hotel on base and all the restaurants, the civil engineers and the housing offices, Tony got to work with all these different squadrons. This job was exactly what Tony was looking for, even if he didn't know it when he first got it. Tony was so grateful to have a job and to get to stay overseas in England. Although Tony was not happy why he had to find this job, he was so happy in this job. He really enjoyed working with the commander that hired him into the position, even though she was just there for a few months before she moved. Then he had two great commanders after her before we moved back to the united states. We stayed in England for about 4.5 years and Tony loved his job. It was more than he could have ever asked for. He loved helping people, he loved being around the military and he loved those he worked with. He could not have asked for a better outcome or a better job. We also found an amazing house when we moved there, the boys each had amazing friends, we were blessed with family friends who had children our boys age. We were able to go on family vacations with them and have them over to our house. It was an incredible 4.5 years. As I said at the beginning this is a witness as to how God is faithful and how He is listening even when we don't know He is. Tony talked about getting a job outside the military but I don't know if he ever talked to God about it specifically. Tony wanted to get out of the military but didn't want to jump ship without another job, God heard that and took care of it. I also want to point out how God always out does our expectations. Tony was looking for any job. He probably would have taken any job, even if it was one that wasn't perfect because we needed and income and we needed health insurance. Yet, God found him the perfect job. It wasn't just another job, it was a job and a promotion. It was a job helping people, which always fills Tony's heart and soul. He found us the perfect friends, and made sure each of our three boys had a best friend as well. He found us the perfect house that was big enough for us to have our friends over. He put the perfect bosses in Tony's path so Tony had awesome leadership to help him learn this new position. God goes above and beyond. It won't always look like we want it to. It won't always happen in a way we want it to. There will be times of uncertainty when we need to step out in faith and keep trusting even when we don't see the ending. This was a period of extreme uncertainty and yet we can see God's hands all of it. If you are in an uncertain period right now, just hold on, just keep trusting, God is working on a plan that is going to knock your socks off. I know it is hard when you are waiting and I know its frustrating because its in God's time, not ours, but your answer is coming, I promise! We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives. This is why it is so important we start talking about it more. The more we share our experiences the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us. If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com or just click here. It won't take up much of your time and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today. Prayerfully consider sharing. Everyone has a story and the world needs to hear them. I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday. Have a blessed day!

Today's ID the Future continues intelligent design theorist Casey Luskin's conversation with Apologetics 315 podcast hosts Brian Auten and Chad Gross. Here in Part 2, Luskin give a peek behind the scenes of ID 3.0, the current research program inspired by the intelligent design framework. Luskin is then asked to explain his reservations about theistic evolution, and Luskin points out the evidential, rhetorical, and logical problems he sees with the brand of theistic evolution advocated by Francis Collins and Biologos. What about the future of the intelligent design movement? Luskin says he's optimistic, both because of the exciting research and publication breakthroughs of late, and because of the many converts he's seeing to the ID framework. According to Luskin, many of these Read More › Source

The Tale of Two Russian Occupations: Georgia and Ukraine – Russian Roulette Episode 115 In this episode of Russian Roulette, Heather sits down with Mykola Bielieskov, Ph.D. student at the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISS), Ukraine, and Natia Seskuria, associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). We discuss the effectiveness and shortcomings of Russia's hard and soft power influence tools in Georgia and Ukraine, including its “borderization” policy in Georgia, its “passportization” in Donbas, and the role of the Orthodox Church. Finally, we finish the conversation with recommendations regarding how the West can resist the challenges presented by Russia's occupation of Georgia and Ukraine's territories. Hello to you listening in Stuttgart, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. Two things tell me that Summer has ended. One is the Autumn Equinox where for a moment in time today we have a day and a night of about equal length. Autumn is the formal invitation to the next season of life when we harvest our plantings. The other is a more intimate reminder that soon we will harvest the November to May Rain Festival storms. This one came early bringing with it very high winds tearing limbs from trees, scattering wildlife to shelter, and shutting down power for 24 hours.I held off firing up the generator because you never know how long the outage will last and better to have power in the night time. Meanwhile, no hot water, no computer, no cell phone, no nothing except a good book, a puzzle, a lantern, and a juvenile Sharp Shinned Hawk perched on a nearby rocking branch, his feathers a'flutter as he looks this way and that. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, including Android, and join us next time! Synopsis The year 2000 marked both the arrival of a new millennium and the 250th anniversary of the death of the great German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The International Bach Academy in Stuttgart decided to mark the occasion by commissioning four very different composers to write four new passion settings, one each after the Gospel accounts of the evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A German composer, Wolfgang Rihm, was chosen for the St. Luke Passion; a Russian, Sofia Gubaidulina for St. John's; an Argentine, Osvaldo Golijov for St. Mark's; and a Chinese composer, Tan Dun, for the Passion according to St. Matthew. And on today's date in 2000, Helmuth Rilling conducted the world premiere of Tan Dun's “Water Passion after St. Matthew.” Tan said he was struck by the references to water in St. Matthew's gospel, so his setting includes seventeen large, illuminated bowls of water, positioned on stage in the form of a cross. These divide the chorus, with three percussionists and a group of additional soloists stationed at the four points of this cross. In Tan's “Water Passion,” natural sounds of water mix with a wide range of vocal techniques, including Tuvan throat singing and the stylized virtuosity of Peking Opera. Music Played in Today's Program Tan Dun (b. 1957) – Water Passion (Stephen Bryant, bass; Mark O'Connor, violin; ensemble; Tan Dun, cond.) Last week, on Tuesday the 27th of April, President Muhammadu Buhari did something that some people have been asking him to do for a while. The President asked for help. During a virtual meeting with the newly appointed US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, the President asked the United States to consider relocating Africom, the US Africa Command Headquarters, from Stuttgart Germany to Africa. For President Buhari to ask for help at this time and from outsiders may mean that our country is really in trouble. This week on The Backstory podcast we look back what our leaders have done so far to address our internal security challenges and then we discuss some of the actions the President can still take. New in this update:COVID-19 case at Hart House care home.Island Health has declared another COVID-19 case at a care home. One staff member at Hart House in Victoria tested positive for the virus. Island Health says all 17 residents have been tested in the long-term care home, but there are no positive cases among them. Outbreaks have also been declared at Chartwell Malaspina long-term care home in Nanaimo and the Ts'i'ts'uwatul' Lelum assisted living facility in Duncan.71% of Snuneymuxw received vaccinationThe chief of the Snuneymuxw first nation says a two-day vaccination clinic has resulted in "community immunity" against COVID-19 among those who live on the reserve. Chief Mike Wyse says 71% of the reserve population received the Moderna vaccine last week. The acting Chief Medical Officer for the First Nations Health Authority says it the Snuneymuxw was not on the original list of indigenous communities to receive the first doses of the vaccine, but some vaccine was diverted to examine whether it could stop the spread of an outbreak involving 28 cases. However, Dr. Shannon McDonald says that does not mean that other nations with outbreaks, including the Cowichan Tribes, will also receive vaccines while the outbreak is occurring."This is the first time that we have gone away from our original plan and list of prioritized communities. This is an opportunity that we had because there was vaccine made available to respond to this cluster. Depending on, as time goes on how many vaccines we're alloted, we may not have the opportunity to do this."—FNHA Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shannon McDonaldMcDonald says the first eight nations to receive the vaccines last week were chosen because of their remote locations and for having experienced COVID-19 outbreaks. In total, there have been 191 cases of the virus among indigenous people both on and off-reserve on Vancouver Island during the pandemic. The First Nations Health Authority will not confirm how many deaths have occurred.VIU student selected for Canada's Culinary Olympic TeamA burgeoning chef and student at Vancouver Island University have been named a member of Canada's Junior Culinary Olympic Team. 19-year-old Otis Crabbe is working on his Red Seal designation and will receive his Culinary Management diploma from VIU this spring. At the same time, he will start training with eight other Olympic culinary students from across the country at the Culinary Institute of Canada in Vancouver. Crabbe may have been born to it, having started working at his family's restaurant in Ucluelet by the time he was 13."I started off standing behind, just barely looking over the till to take orders and as soon as I could I was running the oven. At one point, you know, everybody wants to be a cowboy or an astronaut or a soldier, but I always just wanted to be a cook."—Otis Crabbe.Crabbe and the team will represent Canada at the oldest culinary competition in the world, which takes place in Stuttgart Germany in 2024.
Watch the DJ set YouTube: https://youtu.be/75pIJlRuHqE Captivated by the atmospheric vibe and the calm of ambient music, as well as the state of absolute ecstasy that provokes the powerful beat of techno, this artist decided to explore the perfect balance between both. Brian Zajak, aka Fejká began his musical career at the age of 17. Torn between the dreamy soft atmosphere of ambient music, and the hard punchy vibe of techno, Fejká couldn't decide which direction his music production would take. "Day/night, dream/dance, slow/fast - music was always split into two worlds for me" he says. Thus, he decided to experiment with both, showing the development process of dream music into dance music. The Philippines has taken some of the most hardline measures in the world to contain the spread of COVID-19. Yet President Duterte's highly militarised approach to the crisis has proven controversial. The enforcement of the strict curfew and quarantine restrictions has led to some excesses, with concerns being raised over police brutality during the lockdown, whilst living conditions for the poor have worsened dramatically, as more than a quarter of the Philippines' population live in dire poverty. Associate Professor Nicole Curato chats with Dr Natali Pearson about life in the Philippines amid one of the world's toughest coronavirus lockdowns, unpacking the Duterte government's policies, the impact of the pandemic on Filipino diasporic communities, community responses to the crisis, and how COVID-19 has exacerbated human rights issues in a vastly unequal country. About Nicole Curato: Nicole is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Canberra's Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance. She is the author of the book Democracy in a Time of Misery: From Spectacular Tragedies to Deliberative Action (2019, Oxford University Press) and Power in Deliberative Democracy: Norms, Forums, Systems (2019, Palgrave, with Marit Hammond and John Min). She is the recipient of Australian Research Council's Discovery Early Career Research Award (2015-2018) for her work on democratic innovations in post-disaster situations. Prior to her appointment at the University of Canberra, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). Sonja Schrepfer Bio: Sonja Schrepfer, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Surgery, founded the Transplant and Stem Cell Immunobiology (TSI) Lab in 2009 in Germany. In 2015, she joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco and was Director of the TSI Lab at UCSF. Sonja is scientific co-founder of Sana Biotechnology Inc. which she joined as SVP in 2019. Dr. Schrepfer's research career has been dedicated to making fundamental discovers in transplant and stem cell immunobiology. Pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-based approaches are effective in immunosuppressed/deficient animal models; but in humans, systemic immunosuppression cannot be justified, due to severe side effects and significant risk of infections and malignancies. So far, only a few immunological strategies have been proposed to overcome these hurdles. Work by Dr. Schrepfer is at the forefront of PSC immunobiology and paves the way for treatment of a wide range of diseases – from supporting functional recovery of failing myocardium to the derivation of other cell types to treat diabetes, blindness, cancer, lung, neurodegenerative, and related diseases. She spent many years examining in detail the fetomaternal interface for application to the envisioned cell therapy. Her work with one of the most antigenic phenotypes, antigen-presenting endothelial cells, demonstrates that hypo-immunogenic cells reliably evade immune rejection in allogeneic recipients that are entirely mismatched in their major histocompatibility complex profile, and further, these cells show long-term survival without immunosuppression in mice and humanized mice (published in Nature Biotechnology in 2019). Sonja is currently Adjunct Professor at UCSF investigating the immunobiology in “tissue chips in space”; that is sending tissue chips to the international space station (ISS). She participated in three flight missions as collaborator and was the PI on the SpaceX16 mission (December 2019). This research will provide insight into what physiological effects time in outer space might have on astronauts, with potentially important implications for future longer-term missions, and has the possibility to open the door to fascinating new discoveries that could be used in earth-bound immunology research. Tobias Deuse Bio: Tobias Deuse, M.D. is a cardiac and heart and lung transplant surgeon internationally renowned for his pioneering work in the development of minimally-invasive techniques for mitral valve repair. Dr. Deuse graduated the University of Stuttgart (Germany) in 1994 with a BS in Physics, and in 2000 earned an M.D. from University of Wuerzburg. Dr. Deuse thereafter received advanced training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital Munich-Grosshadern and University Heart Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. After obtaining his board certification in Germany in 2007 as a heart surgeon, Dr. Deuse completed a surgical fellowship in Lung and Heart-Lung Transplantation at Stanford and joined the UCSF faculty in 2015. Dr. Deuse's laboratory at UCSF is working on the immunobiology of pluripotent stem cells. To circumvent rejection, techniques such as somatic cell nucleus transfer (SCNT) into an enucleated oocyte (formation of a SCNT stem cell), fusion of a somatic cell with an embryonic stem cell (ESC; formation of a hybrid cell), and reprograming of somatic cells using certain transcription factors (induced PSCs, iPSCs) have been used. However, his work has shown that SCNT stem cells and iPSCs may have immune incompatibilities with the nucleus or cell donor, respectively, despite having identical nuclear DNA (published in Cell Stem Cell 2014). Further, he has demonstrated that mitochondrial (mt) DNA-encoded proteins as well as mtDNA mutations and genetic instability associated with reprograming and iPSC expansion can create minor antigens, producing rejection. His work also demonstrated that even autologous iPSC derivatives are not inherently immunologically inert for autologous transplantation (published in Nature Biotechnology in 2019). This has provided an important, promising avenue for selection of optimal stem cell therapeutics for future clinical applications ¾ via identifying the most compatible starter cell line and monitoring “near match” autologous iPSC products for mtDNA mutations and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) enrichments during the manufacturing process. Director Sonja Schrepfer, M.D., Ph.D., and co-director Tobias Deuse, M.D., explain the lab's research towards understanding and overcoming transplant rejection. They touch on Why finding ways to reduce rejection and successfully find transplantation avenues that don't require immunosuppression drugs is so important, How their research starts with pluripotent stems cells that must be differentiated and then transplanted, Why using a patients' specific stem cells still face rejection due to mitochondrial proteins that eventually form despite gene editing, and How the lab is working toward an "off the shelf" solution by altering proteins that trigger rejection and other means. Drs. Schrepfer and Deuse run the Transplant and Stem Cell Immunobiology Lab (TSI) at the University of California in San Francisco and specialize in heart and lung transplant issues through CRISPR, gene editing, and stem cell therapy. They begin by explaining the many complications a person taking immunosuppressant drugs faces and why their research seeks to address these issues and make for a safer system for patients. Further, they explain that patient-tailored stem cell therapy approaches are not suitable for large populations for several reasons, including the frequent need to treat a patient almost immediately for heart damage or other similar issues. They explain that while they can generate cardiac cells that don't get rejected at first, these cells can develop mutant proteins that causes rejection later. They are following a couple of approaches to address the rejections including learning how fetuses survive the mother's immune system. A big leap forward for the lab was learning how to knock out the molecule that signaled to the immune system its foreignness through CRISPR: in other words, they are learning how to make these introduced cells silent to the immune system. Finally, they describe their "off the shelf" goal of producing non-immunogenic cells ready for injection for a majority of patients and alternatively generating a hypo-immunogenic environment in the patient to prevent long-term rejection. For more, see the lab's web page at https://tsilab.ucsf.edu/

A warm welcome to episode 015 of "My Morning Minutes"! Science vs. ideology. How science can solve our problems! Today I talk about: Today I talk about a scientific experiment conducted in Stuttgart / Germany. A modern diesel car was tested in regard to fine dust. The scientists wanted to see how much fine dust the car is emitting in comparison to the general amount in the air. They expected the readings of the exhaust pipe being higher than the readings in front of the car. What they found was surprising: The car emitted much less fine dust than the air in front of the car which was sucked into the engine. In general the car cleaned the air of about 90% of fine dust particles. So, in fact modern diesel cars clean the air. Are you surprised about these findings? Do you believe science can solve our problems? Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement DJ UMEKFor a long time, Slovenia is known for its great electronic parties, but as the local scene is of boutique dimensions, everyone, who wishes to take the art of mixing and producing to a professional level, has to go out there and enter the worldwide scene. Umek has done this step as early as in the middle of the 90s and so he became one of the most important techno players of the global techno scene, even before the end of the last millennium. Together with people, who shared the same views, he successfully captured the first era of researching and recreating the rules of the dance music in Recycled Loops, Consumer Recreation and Astrodisco platforms, which all put the sound of the Slovenian techno on the world map of electronic music. In the beginning of the year 2007, Umek started a new 1605 Music Therapy - Sixteenofive, with which he marked the beginning of the second era of his music creation and what an era it is. 5 highly popular releases on the 1605 label with lots more planned in the next few months, a huge success of the »Day Of Electronics 09« - the main 1605 event in Krizanke (Ljubljana, Slovenia) for the third year in a row, a popular summer festival »Disconautica« (Koper, Slovenia) featuring 1605 Main Floor for the second year in a row and with over 50.000 attending people. Furthermore the 15 astonishing releases and remixes already released in 2009 are the best proof, that Umek stays focused on his primary goal – to make high quality productions that stand out from the rest and to bring this music closer to people all around the world. The year 2009 also brought a fresh breeze in Umek’s booking department and so his new booking agency is Bullitt Bookings from the USA, that also takes care of some of the biggest names, like Dubfire, Nic Fanciulli, Shlomi Aber, Davide Squillace and many others.Last year's releases like Is it / Longer Trail, Destructible Enviroment, S Cream, Designed Persona, You Might Hear Nothing and the latest club hit Work This Data, have caught the attention of Armada, Hell Yeah, Tronic, Dataworx and other biggest labels of the music industry and judging by Umek's tracks »Hablando« and »Slap«, released on his own label 1605, by the enormous amount of upcoming releases and the second (and first on 1605 label) album with his 10 great tracks “Responding To Dynamic” (coming in spring 2010), Umek surely isn’t going to run out of creative fuel for quite some time. 02.06.2010 Umek @ Club Lehmann, Stuttgart, Germany - 2010 48artist - track - version - label1.
