Synopsis On today's date in 1837, the Dublin-born pianist and composer John Field breathed his last in Moscow at the age of 54. Born in 1782 into musical family, Field soon moved to London to study with the Italian composer Muzio Clementi and became a sought-after concert artist at a very tender age. Haydn heard the 13-year perform in London and was impressed. At age 16, Field premiered his own first Piano Concerto. Over the course of his life, John Field would meet, play for, and perform with many other famous composers of his day, including Beethoven, Czerny, Hummel, Moscheles, and Mendelsohn. Field ended up in Saint Petersburg, where he published his own compositions and apparently lived rather extravagantly. It's said he was so well-off that he could afford to turn down a lucrative appointment to the Russian court. In Tolstoy's famous novel WAR AND PEACE, the Countess Rostova even asks a pianist to play her favorite Field nocturne. And it's quite likely that while in Russia, like most of the Russian nobility of the day, Field got by speaking French, not Russian. It's said that on his deathbed when asked what his religion was, Field replied with a French pun: "I am not a Calvinist, but a Claveciniste (French for a harpsichord player). Synopsis Following the successful premiere of his First Symphony in 1876, the New England composer John Knowles Paine finished a Second, which he gave a German subtitle: “Im Fruehling” or “In Springtime.” In 19th century America, “serious” music meant German music, and “serious” musicians like Paine all studied in Germany. Returning home, Paine became the first native-born American to win acceptance as a symphonic composer, and, accepting a teaching post at Harvard, became that school's first professor of music. On today's date in 1880, when Paine's “Spring” Symphony was premiered at Sanders Theater, the normally staid Bostonians went nuts. One critic who was present, recalled that “ladies waved their handkerchiefs, men shouted in approbation, and the highly respected John S. Dwight, arbiter in Boston of music criticism, stood in his seat frantically opening and shutting his umbrella as an expression of uncontrollable enthusiasm.” Paine's music remained tremendously popular in his own day. In 1883 George Henschel, then the conductor of the Boston Symphony, was sent the following poetic suggestion about his programming: Let no more Wagner themes thy bill enhance And give the native workers just one chance. Don't give that Dvorák symphony a-gain; If you would give us joy, oh give us Paine! Synopsis On today's date in 1935, at the Church of Saint François-Xavier in Paris, organist Geneviève de la Salle gave the first complete performance of the three-movement Suite, Op. 5, by the French composer, teacher, and virtuoso organist Maurice Duruflé. If you sing in a choir or are a fan of choral music, you're probably familiar with Duruflé's serene and tranquil “Requiem,” Op. 9, which premiered some 12 years later. Duruflé's Op. 5 premiered in 1935, his Op. 9 in 1947, so you might reasonably conclude the composer was a slow worker – which he was.  He was also a very self-critical perfectionist whose catalog of works is rather small, but exquisitely crafted.  In all, Duruflé's output comprises less than 15 published works, of which seven are for organ. Duruflé's music is firmly embedded in the French tradition of organ composers like César Franck and Louis Vierne, and orchestral composers like Debussy, Ravel, and Duruflé's own composition teacher, Paul Dukas.  The great French organist Marie-Claire Alain, when asked to describe Duruflé's music, replied "it is a perfectly honest art… He was not an innovator but a traditionalist… Duruflé evolved and amplified the old traditions, making them his own."  Music Played in Today's Program Maurice Durufle (1902-1986) — Organ Suite, Op. 5 (Todd Wilson, o (Schudi organ at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Texas)) Delos 3047 On This Day Births 1752 - Italian composer Muzio Clementi, in Rome; 1878 - English composer Rutland Boughton, in Aylesbury; Deaths 1837 - Irish composer John Field, age 54, in Moscow (Julian date: Jan.11); 1908 - American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell, age 47, in New York; 1981 - American composer Samuel Barber, age 70, in New York; Premieres 1724 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 73 ("Herr, wie du willst, so schicks mit mir") performed on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's first annual Sacred Cantata cycle in Leipzig (1723/24); 1729 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 156 ("Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe") probably performed in Leipzig on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's fourth annual Sacred Cantata cycle (to texts by Christian Friedrich Henrici, a.k.a. "Picander") during 1728/29; 1895 - MacDowell: Suite No. 2 (":Indian"), at the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, by the Boston Symphony, with Emil Paur conducting; On the same program, MacDowell appeared as the soloist in his own Piano Concerto No. 1; 1933 - Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 2, in Frankfurt, with Hans Robaud conducting and the composer as soloist; 1936 - Chavez: "Sinfonia India," on a radio broadcast by the Columbia Symphony, conducted by the composer; 1948 - Diamond: Symphony No. 4, by the Boston Symphony, Leonard Bernstein conducting; 1963 - Peter Mennin: Symphony No. 7, by the Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conducting; 1973 - Elliott Carter: String Quartet No. 3, in New York City, by the Juilliard String Quartet; This work won the Pulitzer Prize for music in that year (This was Carter's second Pulitzer Prize); 1999 - Thea Musgrave: "Three Women," in San Francisco, by the Women's Philharmonic, A. Synopsis On today's date in 1806, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote to his publishers Breitkopf and Härtel:  “you may have at once three new string quartets.” These were three new works Beethoven had written on commission from the wealthy Russian ambassador to Vienna, Count Andrey Kirillovich Razumovsky. Beethoven was stretching the truth a bit when he told his publisher they could have the quartets “at once,” since as per the Count's commission, Razumovsky had exclusive rights to the music for a full year. But then, Beethoven had also promised the Count that he'd weave authentic Russian melodies in all three quartets but ended up doing so in just two of them.  Today, these “Razumovsky” Quartets rank among Beethoven's most popular chamber works, but initially they were NOT well received. When shown the music prior to publication, a professional Viennese quartet assumed Beethoven was playing a practical joke on them.  The second movement of the first quartet, with its cello solo on just one note, provoked particular disdain. Muzio Clementi, who had seen these quartets in manuscript, remarked to Beethoven “Surely you don't consider these works to be music!” To which Beethoven replied: “Oh, they are not for you, but for a later age.” Music Played in Today's Program Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827): String Quartet in F, Op. 59, No. 1 (Orford Quartet) CBC 2020

Donald Macleod delves into the life and work of piano prodigy Muzio Clementi. Muzio Clementi was one of the 18th and 19th century’s most revered musicians – a star performer, a composer admired by Czerny, Beethoven and Chopin and an astute musical businessman. However, he also had his detractors in his own time and history hasn’t been as kind to him as to the greater names of his time – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Today his name is unfamiliar to most but it is certainly better known than the music he wrote. He was fortunate to have interactions with perhaps the world's three greatest composers, but this fortune may have also worked against him - putting him in direct competition with them. Across the episode, Donald Macleod explores Clementi’s contact with the greatest composers of his day, reassessing the life and music of the man known as the “father of the piano” in the light of these encounters. We’ll hear the stories of his musical duel with Mozart, stage-sharing with Haydn, brushes with Beethoven and dispute with John Field over a hat. Music featured: Symphony No 3 (Finale) Musical Characteristics, Op 19 Piano Sonata in A flat Major, WoO 13 Sonata for piano, Op 2 No 4 Duetto in C Major, Op 3 No 3 (Presto) Mozart (arr.
