The Trump-Vance transition team and the Biden administration signed a memorandum of understanding last week formally kicking off the process to hand over executive power — though the Trump team has decided not to accept some of the government's available resources, including tech and information security provided by the General Services Administration. The transition team will reportedly run as a “self-sufficient organization” with existing security and information protections already built-in, utilizing private funding, according to the press release from the Trump transition team. That includes not using technology or buildings provided by the General Services Administration as part of the transition resources the agency is authorized and appropriated to provide. The Trump team said it “already has existing security and information protections built in, which means we will not require additional government and bureaucratic oversight.” The Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General called out the agency's lack of an updated public strategy for artificial intelligence and underscored the need to be proactive in a report on its management and performance challenges last week. The comments came as part of the OIG's determination that maintaining cybersecurity and keeping up with emerging technologies, such as AI, were among the top challenges for the DOJ. For AI specifically, the report underscored how long ago the department's public AI strategy was released. The OIG's office said in the report: “While the Department has made efforts to adapt to the change in the technological landscape, such as hiring the Department's first Chief Science and Technology Advisor and Chief AI Officer, the most recent publicly issued strategy on AI from the Department—which outlines an AI adoption and coordination strategy with DOJ component responsibilities—is from 2020.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. A signficant situation vacant is causing concern in the science world and beyond. The government won't say whether it's keeping role of Prime Minister's Chief science advisor; a job that has been empty since July. That's despite the coalition agreement saying "decisions will be based on data and evidence."Among other things the chief science advisor provides advice on specific topics to the PM and Ministers and information in a crisis like, the covid pandemic. However, past advice from Prime Ministerial science advisors on dealing with gangs, a rising prison population , and boot camps has run contrary to a number of policies the current government's adopted. The budget for the office has also been cut by half a million dollars. Simon Kingham was Chief Science advisor to the NZTA, up until May this year and spoke to Lisa Owen.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chill Pill is owned and operated by Ally Biotech, a company committed to harnessing the power of science to create innovative THC products, such as their patented Lipofusion® technology. For more information, visit ChillPillsAZ.com. Notes: Seg 1 Cannabis is competitive and it's all about the product quality. Growing cannabis is a seasonal business. Ally biotech has been around for two years, circa 2021. Working on a new product called Lipo fusion to be determined one will come out. Ally purchase a product called chill pill in 2023 and they've tightened up the product with some of their own technology to stabilize the brand. They have three or four products. Dr. Chuck has a manufacturing and farmer background. SOP of the product is the franchise potential. Chill pill can be taken and a gummy or sugar edible. THC is 10 g per pill with other variations of 510 and even up to 125 g. Can also take it in liquid form. They got a nighttime version CBN to stay asleep. Another version CBG daytime to give you energy. Any time product with non-enhanced oil. There's an ongoing discussion of medicinal use for cannabis, vs recreational. Dr. Chuck believes all cannabis products is medicine. The goal of the company is to adopt the practices of big Pharma and make high grade products. Seg 2 They are creating pills, but not smokables. AZDHS or department of health has to monitor every product sold in Arizona. They have the studies so you can check all the tests and confirm their product is safe. In reality you can't find tests on prescription drugs, and many drugs are imported from Asia. It's hard to know what the actual quality is. The chill pill products are made in Arizona using plants that must also be grown in Arizona. There is a strict chain of custody on plant growing as well as all types of test things like examples testing for metals. The ingredients of THC and CBD actually come from the same plant. When they make their product they buy the extract from other easy growers and use easy labs for testing. Overall the company has a model that would be easy to copy from the state of Arizona to other states. Quality of most cannabis products is stagnant per Dr. Chuck. Any cannabis product they're making cannot claim use. FDA costs are huge to run tests and prove use cases. Very few cannabis companies have the budget to do it. Estimated cost of $15 million to pass the FTA test. Cannabis products are not bad for you. What most people don't realize is that over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol if you take 2 1/2x the recommended dose recommended dose it can actually be toxic. Cannabis products you take microdoses, it would take 100 times the recommended doss to be toxic. Seg 3 FDA and DEA are actually working together. The DEA treats cannabis like any other schedule one dangerous drug, like cocaine or heroin. Yet it does not have the same affects nor addictive qualities. On schedule 2 are many pain medicines like oxycodone. These medicines are extremely dangerous and can be addictive. Alcohol though regulated it's not on any drug schedule, it's totally legal and only has age restrictions. Hundred milligrams per charge 10 per unit. Quick factor female cannabis state to state it's federally illegal when you've committed a crime. No interstate commerce. Cannabis must all be within the state. It's highly regulated and only legal in about 60% of the states. It is unknown how the DEA will handle cannabis long-term. Arizona has a very viable medical market for cannabis as well as for pain medication. Cannabis can be used for pain and it is less habit-forming. Medicines like steroids which help a lot of things in the body, also have many negative side effects. Any drug you taking must be careful of the dosage and it needs to be controlled. Many pain medication's have very serious side effects as well as the potential for problems with overdosing. Per Dr. Chuck you take one chill pill at 5 mg and it will bring down swelling and pain in your body may be failing. Seg 4 Take too much aspirin you can actually overdose very quickly. This is because aspirin is hard on the liver and can cause metabolism issues. 500 mg plus she took an OxyContin also at 500 mg could wind up having an overdose. Steroids can do damage to the body but it actually takes a lot of time. CBD and THC hit different receptions in your body receptors in your body and work well together. CBG actually helps with sleep. Francis has a very personal story or cannabis treatment helped him with focus. Per Francis also helped relieve tumor size and his cancer treatment a few years ago. He credits cannabis for a faster recovery. Initially during cancer treatment he was taking Percocet pain pills, also taking nausea drugs which he did not want to. Took Cannabis and it took care of everything. Francis believes that doctor said prescribe cannabis to get people off opiates. More information go to life is chill or chill pill a Z. They sell wholesale to dispensaries. No sugar in the product. Try it for what helps you. The chill drops are the first Lipo products you can put the drops in the water. Go to jars locations to get their product. Both Dr. Chuck and Francis believe and hope THC will be taken off the schedule one drug listing. New Zealand cannot arrest its way out of the gang problem. That's according to a report by the Chief Science Advisory - requested to inform policy for reducing gang harm. It instead calls for improvements in addressing related factors such as family harm, youth offending and drug use. Co-author Tracey McIntosh says legal action over simply being associated with gangs causes collateral damage. "That's largely with children and with women. And it means you have much more distrust in a community and those young people who you actually don't want to enter into a pathway of gangs actually feel that they have no other opportunity." We found our previous episode with Frank G. Howard, the CEO of GeneIQ, so interesting and important that we wanted to dive even deeper into pharmacogenomics with Dr Tariq Adwan, the Chief Science officer of GeneIQ. The short definition of pharmacogenomics is the science of determining the genetic variability that influences physiological response. This means that instead of a whole lot of trial and error with medications, people can get the medication that is genetically most likely to be accepted by the body. This means less side effects, and less medications to treat those side effects, along with many other benefits. Learn more about this new science, the benefits and what it takes to get this program started for someone truly in need. Knowing what medications are right for each person can mitigate the need to throw many medications, on average 15 medications for seniors, to treat their health concerns.

In this episode, Françoise von Trapp interviews Laura Matz, CEO of Athinia™ and Chief Science and Technology Officer of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, about the growing need for data collaboration between materials suppliers and semiconductor device manufacturers, and the solution she helped create. Over the past 10 years, more new materials have been introduced into semiconductor manufacturing at each device node. At the same time, processes continue to tighten. This is increasing sensitivities to materials variations. Because of this, materials companies have to publicly communicate on excursions in the materials supply chain. Until now. Matz explains how a secure data ecosystem platform can use Big Data and AI to solve these issues. She provides details on how this platform addresses both IP security and cybersecurity. The platform she describes, Athinia™, was launched in December 2021. This secure data collaboration platform allows semiconductor device manufacturers and materials suppliers to share, aggregate, and analyze data to unlock efficiencies and time to market while improving quality, supply chain, and sustainability. Demand for a local seaweed-based biostimulants jumped 200 percent this autumn compared to the same time last year, partly driven by price hikes for synthetic fertilisers, as the war in Ukraine affects global supplies. AgriSea has been making biostimulant products for 25 years, and says demand is also growing as farmers become more conscious of where farm inputs come from. AgriSea collects seaweed from remote shores of coastal New Zealand and brews the harvest into a nutrient-rich concentrate at a factory in Paeroa. The company is also developing a seaweed farm in the Hauraki Gulf. The final product is a bio-stimulant, which enables farms and orchards to improve outcomes for soil, pasture, plant and animal health. Seaweed is a burgeoning sector in New Zealand, and globally, the seaweed sector is estimated to be worth more than $20 billion. Kathryn speaks to the chief executive of AgriSea, Clare Bradley about the industry. She also speaks with Fonterra's Chief Science and Technology Officer, Jeremy Hill, initiatives Fonterra is exploring to reduce greenhouse gases, including trialling a supplement for cattle containing Asparagopsis seaweed.
Sea levels are rising twice as fast as thought in New Zealand, significantly reducing the amount of time authorities have to respond. But there's a new weapon in regional and unitary councils' armoury to combat the pressures on communities of climate change, as well as for managing land, air, and water resources. The sector's inaugural Chief Science Advisor is Dr Chris Daughney. Te Uru Kahika created this role in recognition of increased pressure on local and regional government from sea level rise, among other pressing environmental issues. Kathryn speaks with Dr Daughney, who is also Chief Science advisor at NIWA.
The Land Before Podcast: Fossil Histories and Paleo Mysteries
SHOW NOTES (Bonus Pre-Season Episode) Evidence indicates the Stegosaurus did not swish its spiked tail back and forth like a Medieval weapon, but rather used it for locomotion and communication, and when need be for defense. Morrison Natural History Museum Director Matthew Mossbrucker provides the non-gory details in his interview with Michelle Howell. Dinosaur Ridge volunteer Jim Watson surmises how the Stego may have sounded — his interpretation is unlike any Hollywood version you've heard. Finally Dr. Nicole Peavy of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) talks about the work of Mitigation Paleontology, and what happens with fossils found on road construction sites. The Stegosaurus used its tail like a third leg! It helped move the animal, and also could be used to communicate with other Stegosaurus, and defend the animal from predators. Matthew Mossbrucker discusses the anatomy of the tail, including the lump of bone called the fourth trochanter, that served as a muscle attachment knob for the caudofemoralis, a muscle found in nearly all animals with tails. In 2009, Mossbrucker and Dr. Robert Bakker studied the tail and published “The Symposium on Stegosauria” In our conversation, Mossbrucker mentions Quarry 13 in Como Bluff, Wyoming which is referenced in this thorough wikipedia post if you would like more context. Dr. Nicole Peavey mentioned paleobotany finds at Denver International Airport, more can be seen on the Denver Museum of Nature and Science website here. Peavy also referenced the Castle Rock Rainforest uncovered during a highway project. At the time the Dr. Kirk Johnson (Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History Director) was with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which now holds 10,000 specimens from this site. He wrote an article about the finds that was published in 2003. Peavy also referenced Ian Miller, now National Geographic Society's Chief Science and Innovation Officer, who also worked at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Miller has led science research projects on major field expeditions across the western U.S. and Madagascar. If you've never heard how the term “Thagomizer” came about, you must first treat yourself to a popular newspaper comic strip from the 1980s called “The Far Side.” Author Gary Larson in a 1982 comic drew a group of cavemen attending a lecture in which the speaker points to the tail tip of a Stegosaurus. The caption explains the spikes are called Thagomizers "after the late Thag Simmons.” Denver Museum of Nature and Science paleontologist Kenneth Carpenter jokingly used the term at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Annual Meeting more than a decade later, and it caught on. Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming is the scene of world-renowned fossil finds including 27 types of fish. And as you will learn, in some cases the data is more important than the fossils themselves. Our theme music was composed by Hansdale Hsu. Stay tuned for Season One coming this spring 2022!
