Political resistance is as old as injustice itself, fighting with tools that span from civil disobedience (boycotts, strikes, sit-ins) to armed struggle, challenging tyranny, colonialism, racism, and inequality through both nonviolent or violent means. Historically it has evolved from ancient community defiance to modern national movements like Black Lives Matter, utilizing culture, direct action, and grassroots organization. Key nonviolent strategies include passive noncooperation (e.g., sit-ins and boycotts) and active confrontation (e.g., U.S. Civil Rights Movement), with recent studies highlighting effective nonviolent strategies, like those seen in the Eastern European revolutions. We will look at the history of political resistance in the United States and make some recommendations for the current tumultuous times. In this episode, we embark on an exciting journey through the cosmos, uncovering the latest developments that are shaping our understanding of the universe. We begin with a significant update from low Earth orbit, where Starlink plans to lower its satellite constellation altitude to enhance space safety. This proactive measure aims to mitigate risks associated with space debris, showcasing responsibility in managing our crowded orbital environment. Next, we turn our attention to the Gaia Space Telescope, which has provided unprecedented insights into the formation of planets, detecting compelling evidence of planetary birth in 31 young stellar systems. This groundbreaking observation marks a shift from theoretical models to direct evidence of how solar systems like ours may have formed. We also discuss a remarkable achievement in the study of rogue planets, as astronomers successfully weighed one for the first time using microlensing techniques. This innovative approach not only measures the mass of the rogue planet but also reveals its distance from us, opening new avenues for understanding these elusive celestial bodies. Moving on to interstellar visitors, we explore the fascinating behavior of Comet 3I ATLAS, which has been releasing substantial amounts of water as it moves through space. This discovery indicates that the building blocks of planetary systems might be more common across the galaxy than previously thought. Looking ahead, we highlight the exciting prospects for 2026, with NASA's Artemis 2 mission set to return astronauts to the Moon, alongside advancements from the commercial sector, including new space stations and lunar landers. The upcoming Nancy Chris Roman Space Telescope and China's Soontian telescope promise to revolutionize our view of the universe. Finally, we celebrate a major upgrade to the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, which will enhance its sensitivity and allow for clearer observations of the cold universe, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries in cosmic history. Would our troops be used to quell demonstrations in the United States with force? Seeing crowds in Washington, D.C., during the George Floyd riots in 2020, Trump is reported to have asked "Can't we just shoot them?" How do we answer the question as to whether the current administration will have U.S. troops fire on the crowds? We will look at the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment, the Insurrection Act of 1807, and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. We will review some history where the military has been used domestically to safeguard civil rights marchers, intervene when requested by governors during violent riots, to stop the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, and to imprison Japanese civilians during World War II. We will also define who is in today's military, where do they come from, how do they line up politically—and would they follow an illegal order and fire on unarmed civilian demonstrators or support a government coup? This is concerning, says Dr. Michael Baker, given the militarization of ICE agents and the deployment of National Guard troops and the Marines to Los Angeles for specious reasons. About the Speaker Dr. Michael Baker recently retired from a 40-year career in general, vascular and trauma surgery. Interstellar Comet 3I ATLAS Captured by Gemini South Telescope: The Gemini South Telescope has unveiled stunning new images of interstellar comet 3I ATLAS, the third known comet from outside our solar system. Discovered on July 1, 2025, this comet is becoming increasingly active as it approaches the Sun, developing a prominent tail and a glowing coma. Its composition resembles that of comets from our solar system, suggesting consistent formation processes across different star systems. This ancient relic is expected to provide astronomers with unprecedented opportunities to study its interactions with our solar system.Comet LEMMON (C 2025 A6) Approaching Earth: Get ready for Comet LEMMON, expected to be visible to the naked eye in October! Discovered by the Mount Lemmon survey, it will make its closest approach on October 20, passing 55.41 million miles from Earth. Predictions for its brightness vary, with some suggesting it could reach magnitude 4 to 5, making it easily visible, while others estimate it could be around magnitude 7.3. The comet is expected to display a greenish hue, adding to its allure for skywatchers.James Webb Space Telescope Observations of Trappist1e: The James Webb Space Telescope has been studying Trappist1e, an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of a red dwarf star. Recent observations suggest that Trappist1e likely lost its primary atmosphere due to stellar flaring. However, hints of trace amounts of methane may indicate the presence of a secondary atmosphere. This research is crucial for understanding habitability around red dwarfs, which make up a significant portion of stars in our galaxy.Upcoming SpaceX CRS NG23 Mission: Tune in for the SpaceX CRS NG23 mission launching on September 14th at 8:11 PM ET. Send us a text I'm delighted to welcome Jo Rose to the podcast to talk about The Story of a Heart by Rachel Clark. This is an incredibly moving book which I was delighted to see won the 2025 Women's Prize for non-fiction. It interweaves the stories of two children, Kiera and who has died after a road traffic accident, and Max, who has cardiomyopathy, severe heart failure, and is awaiting a heart transplant. This is the story of how Kiera's heart becomes Max's heart, along with an incredible supporting cast of clinicians and of families, and with segues out into the history of transplant, the origins of ATLS, and It is astonishingly moving and beautiful book, which I absolutely adored. It was such a great joy to talk to Jo about it and revisit it and think again of the beautiful storytelling and the importance of this type of story.

Severe trauma is the leading cause of death worldwide for adults younger than 50 years of age. Acute traumatic life support (ATLS) guidelines endorse early and aggressive usage of supplemental oxygen in patients with severe trauma, at least until abnormalities of airway or breathing can be safely ruled out. However, unclear target concentration, duration or saturation goals often leads to hyperoxemia. Emerging studies in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting suggest that liberal supplemental oxygen therapy and hyperoxemia is associated with increased mortality. Limited evidence in the trauma population suggests similar outcomes.

The Locums Tenens Strategist | Create A Career And Lifestyle On Your Terms
Today I'm going to show you step by step on how to optimize your CV specifically for locum tenens work. You can use these notes as a resource and list these sections in this order: 1. Contact Information Start with your name, address, and contact information at the top of your CV. Ensure your phone number and email address are current and professional. 2. Education List your educational background in reverse chronological order: • Fellowships: Specify the institution, your specialty, and the dates (mm/yyyy) you attended. • Residency: Include the institution, your area of specialization, and dates. • Medical School: Name the institution and the dates of attendance. • Undergraduate: List your degree, the institution, and your graduation date. 3. Work History Your work history should also be in reverse chronological order. For each position, include • The name of the hospital or clinic, • Your role or title, • The dates you worked there (mm/yyyy format), • A brief description of your duties and special achievements, especially those relevant to locum work. 4. Board Certifications Clearly list any board certifications you hold, along with the certifying body and the date of certification. 5. Certifications Include any relevant certifications such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Fundamental Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). These are crucial for surgeons and highly valued in locum tenens roles. 6. State Licenses Make sure to include all state licenses that you currently have active, if you have an IMLC letter of qualification it would be good to include this as well. DEA's and Controlled Substance Permits are optional but in my opinion just add clutter and aren't needed. 7. Societies and Professional Memberships Detail any professional societies or memberships you are a part of, as these connections can enhance your credibility and network. Optional Items While not essential, you can include awards, recognitions, and publications if they are relevant and recent. Keep this section brief to maintain focus on your primary qualifications. Proofreading Your CV Before submitting your CV, ensure it is free from spelling and grammar errors. Here are a few tips: Use a reliable spell checker, but don't rely solely on it. Read your CV thoroughly to catch errors that automated tools might miss. Have a colleague or mentor review your CV. A fresh set of eyes can catch mistakes and offer valuable feedback. Read your CV out loud. This can help you catch awkward phrasing or errors that you might overlook when reading silently. Use a Clean, Professional Format • Consistent Formatting: Use a clean, professional format with consistent fonts and clear headings. This makes your CV easier to read quickly. • PDF Format: Save and send your CV as a PDF to maintain the formatting across different computers and operating systems. Use Chat GPT for feedback, questions, spell check or revisions. You an copy and paste your CV (or upload it) and tell it exactly what to do by using prompts. Here are some examples of what a prompt is: "Generate a professional summary for a surgeon with 10 years of experience in trauma surgery." "List action verbs for describing surgical duties in a CV." "Help me format the education section of a medical CV with reverse chronological order." "Suggest concise descriptions for surgical procedures commonly performed in locum tenens assignments." "Review this bullet point for clarity and impact: [insert bullet point]." "What are some effective ways to highlight locum tenens work specifically in a surgical CV?" "Create a list of professional societies related to general, trauma, and vascular surgery." "Draft a brief section on ATLS certification for a surgical CV." Contributor: Meghan Hurley MD Educational Pearls: What is ATLS? Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is a systematic and comprehensive approach to the evaluation and management of trauma patients It was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) The key components include the Primary Survey ("ABCDE"), the Secondary Survey, Definitive Care, and Special Considerations What are the issues with ATLS? ATLS relies on many algorithms and rules-of-thumb, which might be helpful for individuals with basic skills and training but might actually present obstacles for those with higher levels of training. Dr. Hurley cites several examples. Example 1: ABC approach to trauma patients ABC stands for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation but focusing on the airway first is not always the best decision. Immediate attention may need to be applied to massive hemorrhage. Intubating a patient that is hemodynamically unstable may cause cardiac arrest. A more helpful phrase might be “Resuscitate before you intubate.” Example 2: C-spine precautions Cervical collars may impede the likelihood of first-pass success when intubating. The risk of complications from a failed airway may often outweigh the risk of causing a spinal cord injury. Example 3:Cutting clothes off. The E of ABCDE stands for exposure which means fully undressing the patient to look for missing injuries. This often involves cutting their clothes off. This practice might be too broadly applied and leave low-risk trauma patients without any clothes to wear when discharged home. Example 4: Digital rectal exam A rectal exam can be a useful tool in the evaluation of patients with abdominal or pelvic injuries. It can help screen for rectal bleeding, pelvic fractures, and neurological function However, the rectal exam is not a sensitive test. A retrospective study from the Indian Journal of Surgery found that a rectal exam missed 100% of urethra injuries, 92% of spinal cord injuries, 93% of small bowel injuries, 100% of colon injuries, and 67% of rectal injuries in trauma patients. Example 6: Pushing on pelvis for pelvic injuries Pushing on the pelvis to check for instability can cause further damage to an unstable pelvis. Imaging the pelvis is far more important than pressing on it if a pelvic fracture is suspected. Example 7: FAST exam A FAST exam, which stands for "Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma," is a rapid ultrasound examination used to assess trauma patients for signs of internal bleeding or organ damage in the abdomen and chest. These can be very useful as an initial test to tell a trauma surgeon where to start looking for internal bleeding in an unstable blunt traumatic injury If a patient is stable and likely going to get a CT scan whether the FAST is positive or negative then the test is unnecessary References ATLS Subcommittee; American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma; International ATLS working group. Ingen tvivl. 58 minutters G.U.L.D.
In this episode of IB Matters we return to talk to Vikas Pahwa from India. Vikas is an experienced DP History teacher and great person to talk about how he implements the ATL skills in the high school. While we often think of ATLs in the earlier grades, Vikas makes a great case for their natural inclusion in higher level courses. We even talk a bit about how teachers should be ready for new ways of teaching as they move on in their careers. TOTAL EM - Tools Of the Trade and Academic Learning in Emergency Medicine
We are back to providing our ATLS content and we are picking up where we left off. Our last ATLS podcast was on spine and spinal cord trauma. Somewhat similar in nature is musculoskeletal trauma. This is a very common form of trauma. However, delayed recognition and treatment can result in life-threatening hemorrhage or limb loss.
