Severe trauma is the leading cause of death worldwide for adults younger than 50 years of age. Acute traumatic life support (ATLS) guidelines endorse early and aggressive usage of supplemental oxygen in patients with severe trauma, at least until abnormalities of airway or breathing can be safely ruled out. However, unclear target concentration, duration or saturation goals often leads to hyperoxemia. Emerging studies in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting suggest that liberal supplemental oxygen therapy and hyperoxemia is associated with increased mortality. Limited evidence in the trauma population suggests similar outcomes.
In this episode, trauma surgeon Dany Westerband, MD, FACS, talks with John Sutyak, MD, FACS, and Joakim Jorgensen, MD, FACS, about the recent ACS Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Global Symposium that attracted 400 people from 48 countries. The meeting was held in Chicago in March 2025. They discuss key takeaways from the symposium and preparations to launch ATLS 11 later this year.
ATLS, 11min., Canada Directed by Mishka Balilty In a dystopian future where a powerful elite class prolongs their lives by exploiting young women for their babies' organs, two women, find themselves on the run from their oppressors. Desperate to escape a fate of forced impregnation and organ extraction, they flee to a remote cabin. Their refuge becomes a sanctuary where they share their dreams and fears, finding solace in each other's company. However, their fleeting happiness is overshadowed by the ever-looming threat of capture. Their love story, which began in desperation and hope, culminates in a tragic and devastating finale. ATLS is a powerful exploration of love, freedom, and the inescapable shadows of a world that seeks to tear them apart. https://www.wtfimproductions.com/registration https://www.facebook.com/wtfim https://www.instagram.com/whothefuckismishka/ Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? I was inspired by Romeo and Juliet one day while listening to the soundtrack from the movie, I started to see this film come to life in my mind. I always loved the reading the play when I was younger… and so I began writing a tragic love story and soon I had a script. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? I was very nervous how it would be received. But I was overjoyed to see that people understood our creative vision and enjoyed the film. The Locums Tenens Strategist | Create A Career And Lifestyle On Your Terms
Today I'm going to show you step by step on how to optimize your CV specifically for locum tenens work. You can use these notes as a resource and list these sections in this order: 1. Contact Information Start with your name, address, and contact information at the top of your CV. Ensure your phone number and email address are current and professional. 2. Education List your educational background in reverse chronological order: • Fellowships: Specify the institution, your specialty, and the dates (mm/yyyy) you attended. • Residency: Include the institution, your area of specialization, and dates. • Medical School: Name the institution and the dates of attendance. • Undergraduate: List your degree, the institution, and your graduation date. 3. Work History Your work history should also be in reverse chronological order. For each position, include • The name of the hospital or clinic, • Your role or title, • The dates you worked there (mm/yyyy format), • A brief description of your duties and special achievements, especially those relevant to locum work. 4. Board Certifications Clearly list any board certifications you hold, along with the certifying body and the date of certification. 5. Certifications Include any relevant certifications such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Fundamental Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). These are crucial for surgeons and highly valued in locum tenens roles. 6. State Licenses Make sure to include all state licenses that you currently have active, if you have an IMLC letter of qualification it would be good to include this as well. DEA's and Controlled Substance Permits are optional but in my opinion just add clutter and aren't needed. 7. Societies and Professional Memberships Detail any professional societies or memberships you are a part of, as these connections can enhance your credibility and network. Optional Items While not essential, you can include awards, recognitions, and publications if they are relevant and recent. Keep this section brief to maintain focus on your primary qualifications. Proofreading Your CV Before submitting your CV, ensure it is free from spelling and grammar errors. Here are a few tips: Use a reliable spell checker, but don't rely solely on it. Read your CV thoroughly to catch errors that automated tools might miss. Have a colleague or mentor review your CV. A fresh set of eyes can catch mistakes and offer valuable feedback. Read your CV out loud. This can help you catch awkward phrasing or errors that you might overlook when reading silently. Use a Clean, Professional Format • Consistent Formatting: Use a clean, professional format with consistent fonts and clear headings. This makes your CV easier to read quickly. • PDF Format: Save and send your CV as a PDF to maintain the formatting across different computers and operating systems. Use Chat GPT for feedback, questions, spell check or revisions. You an copy and paste your CV (or upload it) and tell it exactly what to do by using prompts. Here are some examples of what a prompt is: "Generate a professional summary for a surgeon with 10 years of experience in trauma surgery." "List action verbs for describing surgical duties in a CV." "Help me format the education section of a medical CV with reverse chronological order." "Suggest concise descriptions for surgical procedures commonly performed in locum tenens assignments." "Review this bullet point for clarity and impact: [insert bullet point]." "What are some effective ways to highlight locum tenens work specifically in a surgical CV?" "Create a list of professional societies related to general, trauma, and vascular surgery." "Draft a brief section on ATLS certification for a surgical CV." Please drop me some stars on Apple or Spotify! Contact me at simon.parsons@comphealth.com

Contributor: Meghan Hurley MD Educational Pearls: What is ATLS? Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is a systematic and comprehensive approach to the evaluation and management of trauma patients It was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) The key components include the Primary Survey ("ABCDE"), the Secondary Survey, Definitive Care, and Special Considerations What are the issues with ATLS? ATLS relies on many algorithms and rules-of-thumb, which might be helpful for individuals with basic skills and training but might actually present obstacles for those with higher levels of training. Dr. Hurley cites several examples. Example 1: ABC approach to trauma patients ABC stands for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation but focusing on the airway first is not always the best decision. Immediate attention may need to be applied to massive hemorrhage. Intubating a patient that is hemodynamically unstable may cause cardiac arrest. A more helpful phrase might be “Resuscitate before you intubate.” Example 2: C-spine precautions Cervical collars may impede the likelihood of first-pass success when intubating. The risk of complications from a failed airway may often outweigh the risk of causing a spinal cord injury. Example 3:Cutting clothes off. The E of ABCDE stands for exposure which means fully undressing the patient to look for missing injuries. This often involves cutting their clothes off. This practice might be too broadly applied and leave low-risk trauma patients without any clothes to wear when discharged home. Example 4: Digital rectal exam A rectal exam can be a useful tool in the evaluation of patients with abdominal or pelvic injuries. It can help screen for rectal bleeding, pelvic fractures, and neurological function However, the rectal exam is not a sensitive test. A retrospective study from the Indian Journal of Surgery found that a rectal exam missed 100% of urethra injuries, 92% of spinal cord injuries, 93% of small bowel injuries, 100% of colon injuries, and 67% of rectal injuries in trauma patients. Example 6: Pushing on pelvis for pelvic injuries Pushing on the pelvis to check for instability can cause further damage to an unstable pelvis. Imaging the pelvis is far more important than pressing on it if a pelvic fracture is suspected. Example 7: FAST exam A FAST exam, which stands for "Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma," is a rapid ultrasound examination used to assess trauma patients for signs of internal bleeding or organ damage in the abdomen and chest. These can be very useful as an initial test to tell a trauma surgeon where to start looking for internal bleeding in an unstable blunt traumatic injury If a patient is stable and likely going to get a CT scan whether the FAST is positive or negative then the test is unnecessary References ATLS Subcommittee; American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma; International ATLS working group. In this episode I'm speaking with Kate Beatty. Kate is the first returning guest I've had on the podcast and one I'm always very pleased to speak with about all things MYP. Kate is an IB Consultant, workshop leader, IB school accreditation team leader and programme leader, executive coach and author of educational resources including the INTHINKING MYP English Language and Literature website. For this episode, I wanted Kate to guide me through her thoughts on an MYP unit I had constructed with any of the salient strengths and weaknesses that she could see. Additionally I wanted to pose a few questions based on the work she's done for the INTHINKING MYP site to better broaden my knowledge of English Language and Literature in the MYP.We discuss: 1. How she feels about the suitability of the Statement of Inquiry, Questions and GRASPS in the unit2. The fact that a number of different facts or skills are taught in a direct and teacher led manner and whether this is okay given that they will go onto produce something that is also borne out of inquiries3. What Kate thinks of the ATLs and the way they have been implemented in the unit4. Kate's general opinion of PPTs and other materials being used to communicate the course's knowledge, skills and tasks5. On the MYP InThinking site, Kate's decision to offer units that fall into Key Concepts outside the typical Creativity/Communication/Connection/Perspective associated with Language and Literature and why this was6. And staying with the site, given that Kate has offered units on some classic topics of English study, how does she ensure that such a unit has a conceptual lens, connects to global contexts and has an authentic assessment? Thanks again to Kate for guiding a way through the rewarding but challenging experience of MYP curriculum construction. Ingen tvivl. 58 minutters G.U.L.D.
In this episode I am talking to Amber Rhinehart. Amber is an MYP Coordinator in an international school in Accra, an MYP Workshop Leader, an IB Site Visitor, MYP Personal Project Examiner and teaches Language and Literature as well as individuals and Societies. I was really keen to speak to someone as experienced and knowledgable as Amber owing to the many valuable but demanding aspects that the MYP framework has to offer. We discuss:- A short introduction to Amber's career to date - Whether Amber recommends combining the likes of analytical and producing texts strands from the outset of MYP or waiting until these respective skills have been developed and therefore consolidated- How to marry GRASPS with the assessment strands when aiming for valid and reliable assessments- How teachers can ensure they are covering global contexts in the same depth as they would the related or disciplinary concepts- My school's recent struggles with Criterion Biii and the need to assess formatting and/or referencing twice a year in the curriculum. - And finally, what Amber thinks is the best approach to implementing ATLs in individual units and the curriculum holisticallyThank you again to Amber who speaks with a fantastic degree of balance, nuance and passion about the curriculum as well as her ongoing contribution to IB's online community of teachers. In this episode of IB Matters we return to talk to Vikas Pahwa from India. Vikas is an experienced DP History teacher and great person to talk about how he implements the ATL skills in the high school. While we often think of ATLs in the earlier grades, Vikas makes a great case for their natural inclusion in higher level courses. We even talk a bit about how teachers should be ready for new ways of teaching as they move on in their careers. TOTAL EM - Tools Of the Trade and Academic Learning in Emergency Medicine
We are back to providing our ATLS content and we are picking up where we left off. Our last ATLS podcast was on spine and spinal cord trauma. Somewhat similar in nature is musculoskeletal trauma. This is a very common form of trauma. However, delayed recognition and treatment can result in life-threatening hemorrhage or limb loss.
As we look at playing with the ATLs, I'm reminded of my friend Vidhya. She is a passionate PYP educator from India. If you are on Twitter in the education community, you have probably run across her many tweets. Ever since last summer, she has opened my eyes to so many possibilities in seeing learning and teaching. In a recent chat, Vidhya and I were discussing this challenge and the role of the ATLs. She will share some of the personal connections her learners made with the ATLs. For a written blog post and other resources, visit: https://thinkchat2020.weebly.com
Welcome to another application series, where we are going to take ideas we have explored before and apply them into a new context. I absolutely love this part, because it helps to look at old things again…the process of anew (4A's by Misty Paterson).Since our last application series, you've had a chance to participate in the Transdisciplinary and Design Thinking challenges. They helped you to take content and apply it to your individual context. Now, we are going to do a minor version for learning environment, play, and the approaches to learning (ATLs). Let's have some fun with this application challenge. Be sure to post your new thinking on social media with #thinkchat2020. I can't wait to see your ideas! For a written blog post and other resources, visit: https://thinkchat2020.weebly.com
Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. It meant something different. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ https://linktr.ee/jacksonlibon --------------------------------------------------- #realtalk #face #instagram #SDF #SYNDICAT #DESPUTES #amour #take #couple #dance #dancers #vogue #voguedqnce #garden #tiktok #psychology #beyou #near #love #foryou #money #ForYouPizza #fyp #irobot #theend #pups #TikToker #couplegoals #famille #relation #doudou #youtube #twitter #tiktokers #love #reeĺs #shorts #instagood #follow #like #ouy #oyu #babyshark #lilnasx #girl #happybirthday #movie #nbayoungboy #deviance #autotrader #trading #khan #academy #carter #carguru #ancestry #accords #abc #news #bts #cbs #huru #bluebook #socialmedia #whatsapp #music #google #photography #memes #marketing #india #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #a #insta #fashion #k #trending #digitalmarketing #covid #o #snapchat #socialmediamarketing¹
In this episode, I have discussed a little bit about some advances in trauma resuscitation, some goals and how ATLS should be the basic trauma skill an emergency physician should have. I did not mean to break any hearts, but yes trauma resus goes beyond ATLS. Do not believe what I say blindly, do your research. The latest podcast episode is with Dr. AJ Copeland- a general surgeon, retired Colonel in the Army, former President of the Association of Women Surgeons and current Regent for the American College of Surgeons, and a personal hero of mine. She describes her rise in leadership in major national surgery organizations. She is a self-described "joiner" and if there was a position that seemed right for her, she would always raise her hand to do it. Once involved in a position, she notes the importance of doing the work. She found meaningful work in AWS as a contributor on numerous projects including the AWS Pocket Mentor found here and creating the guide for patients on "What is a surgical resident" (found here) as an ACS governor. On this episode, she shared some tips on leadership: - if you find a need- either something that needs to get done, or you think you can do it better- then raise your hand and get involved - When in the position, do the work - Bring others along. You may see their potential before they do. Tell others about opportunities, and encourage them to apply. She stressed the importance of getting involved in national societies, especially the American College of Surgeons. The ACS is the umbrella organization for all surgical subspecialties. Unlike smaller societies, the ACS has the numbers to help lobby for change, advocate for what surgeons need, and provide other services like education (SESAP, ATLS, the Clinical Congress), quality (NSQIP), and other benefits. She is one of 24 Regents of the ACS, a part of the organization that is responsible for the big picture and directives for all surgeons. She was a Governor prior to this, a body of around 300 surgeons who act as representatives of the Fellows. Governors represent the Fellows of the American College of Surgeons, and are the official communications link between Fellows and the Board of Regents. https://www.womensurgeons.org/ https://www.facs.org/

In today's episode we are joined with Gerard (NYS AEMTP), Justin (NYS EMT-B) and our EMT-B Intern Kelsey to review a call in which a Paramedic utilizes his skills of observation to piece together a diagnosis. Sometimes EMS providers can not rely on their monitoring equipment to tell the truth. This is why knowing signs and symptoms of disease processes will assist you in deciding a treatment path without wasting time. We will discuss Hypotension, Orthostatic Vital Signs and the now debunked ATLS guidelines for Hypotension and pulses.
