My final 1983 gig-going-entry recaps a couple of shows I took in during a crazy/nuts four-day trip to NYC.   While I will be discussing the performances by hardcore titans The Circle Jerks and post-Throbbing Gristle offshoot Psychic TV, I'll also be looking at the madcap trip to Manhattan as a whole, recounting the hijinks that MZ, Miss B, myself, and others got up to.   If you've heard or read EP 25 on the Flipper show at Fryfogle's, then you'll have somewhat of an idea of what to expect.Tune in for destroyed hotel rooms; terrified cousins; "Peace, Love and Groove!"; Danceteria bathroom hallucinations; Brooke Shields' husband, Broadway Bob; and pterodactyls and manifestations.You can also read the original blog entries for The Circle Jerks and for the Psychic TV show on the mylifeinconcert.com blog. Next On Stage –> I am jumping back further into the past as I recall a cabaret show that happened between my first and second “official” gigs (Roxy Music at the London Arena on February 5, 1975 and Bob Seger at the London Gardens on May 19, 1978). I saw the cabaret in Portsmouth, England, in August 1977, and it featured early-60s popster Susan Maughan, she of the 1962 hit, “Bobby's Girl,” and possibly the legendary Tessie O'Shea. I had initially planned to discuss it as part of upcoming compilation episode but have instead decided to make it a stand-alone episode. The EP's Special Guest is my 96-year-old mother—we'll call her Vera Various Artists—who attended the cabaret along with me and my late father.   My mum shares her vague memories of the evening, including that she feels the legendary Tessie O'Shea was on the bill.  If my mother is right, then boy do I wish I could remember that.  I wouldn't have known who she was then but I sure do now. We do both remember humourist Pam Ayers and the Famous People Players being part of the show. My mother also recalls the venue itself, the Portsmouth The Hippodrome but also The King's Theatre in Southsea, as she grew up in Petersfield, but later moved to Portsmouth after marrying my dad, and both my elder siblings were born there.   In the interview, she discusses listening to the radio as well as records in the UK as a girl in the ‘30s, and also music and live shows she enjoyed after to moving to Canada in the mid-50s and onwards. I also talk about my experiences on this trip in the ultimate UK punk year—1977—amid the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Tune in for dangerous radio batteries, hanging out in British record stores to hear the latest releases, what double album of my mum's drove me nuts in the ‘70s, punk rock mania, not seeing The Sex Pistols, and what Ethel Merman was really like live. That's all coming up in Episode 31, Concert no. 001.5, entitled UK 1977: VA's Mum on Ethel Merman and Susan Maughan at the Portsmouth Hippodrome and the Music of Her Life + My UK Trip Amid the Year of the Punk Rock Explosion and Silver Jubilee mylifeinconcert.com

Glasgow based label Sounds of Lava Lava continues its fine run of form with four sublime house cuts from Finglas producer OAKLEE. It's hard to believe this is Aaron Shaw's debut release under his OAKLEE moniker; his deftly produced tracks intertwine club-focussed elements, resonant bass lines, deep grooves and delicate melodies. Back Against The Wall is a perfect showcase of Aaron's style & influences. The title track Back Against The Wall, which we premiere today opens the EP straight into the dance floor, with bouncing bass, driving percussion and sweeping pads. Classic House piano rolls float throughout the track before emphatically dropping in to provide a huge burst of energy. Golden Hour follows up with a playful yet deep sound. Thumping kicks lead into warm bass lines and wandering synth lines while chirping keys intertwine with beautiful organic melodies. On the flip side, In Real Time balances the EP with a real Italian Dream House energy perfect for sunrise or sunset. Delicate atmospherics swirl alongside soft pads, resonating bass, bubbling arpeggiated synthesisers and a hypnotising xylophone hook. OAKLEE's Ambient Mix of In Real Time strips back the percussion to give more emphasis on the finely crafted elements of this gem. This week, we sit down with Physician Associate and business owner, Sarah Balladares, PA-C for one wild ride! It all started with Sarah's original career post-marketing degree, Financial Planning. After 5 years helping medical professionals get a handle on their money, she decided it was time to leave her career and head off to medical school for a career in Plastic Surgery. That was a short lived, as a few of her close physician friends talked her off the ledge, and offered up a career as a PA as viable alternative. That was all it took, and Sarah went back to school to take a year of prerequisites only to be waitlisted! That didn't stop her, one of the many times she would persevere. She eventually got into PA school that year, and the rest is history...sort of! Sarah had her goal in mind- Aesthetics- and despite repeated interventions from her professors, she stayed the course. After PA school, Sarah embarked on a journey that would take her to Ohio where she still works periodically then to Louisiana. She got involved with a practice in hopes of owning it one day, but her curiosity was not welcomed, so she found herself in a tight spot. What to do to end this "fun employment?" Well, Smooth by Sarah was born! Through a bit of desperation and a lot of gumption, with $7000 in injectables, a chair, and a one room rental spot, she opened her own practice. Now, she goes back and for to Ohio, works at another medical spa in Metarie, LA and has her own clinic in Baton Rouge. She's a busy gal managing 3 practices and a packed schedule, and flying home to North Carolina to see her new(ish) husband and remodel a home! She's definitely on the go, but so many of her decisions have been ones that may have seemed crazy at the time, but looking back, it's exactly what needed to happen in that moment to arrive at the destination. Now 3 years into owning Smooth by Sarah, she is continuing to innovate and evolve as a business owner and an injector, learning valuable lessons along the way. Perry's bestselling memoirs include Population 485, Truck: A Love Story, Coop, and Visiting Tom, and his latest, Montaigne in Barn Boots: An Amateur Ambles Through Philosophy. His first book for young readers, The Scavengers, was published in 2014 and first novel for adult readers, The Jesus Cow, was published in May of 2015. Raised on a small Midwestern dairy farm, Perry put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then wandered into writing. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He hosts the nationally-syndicated "Tent Show Radio," performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Beds (currently recording their third album for Amble Down Records).
