Amid much debate about the health of the art market, Frieze is back in London, with its two fairs, Frieze London and Frieze Masters. Ben Luke talks to The Art Newspaper's art market editor, Kabir Jhala, about the mood in the big tents in Regent's Park. Beyond Frieze, of course, is a vast parallel art world, with thousands of unrepresented artists and curators keen to realise their big ideas. Hypha Studios has for some years been finding vacant property in cities around the UK to provide free exhibition and studio space to artists, curators and other creatives. This week, it launched Hypha Curates, an online sales platform. Ben talks to the non-executive director of Hypha Studios, Will Jennings. And this episode's Work of the Week is a drawing by Pierre Auguste Renoir. A study in red and white chalk for one of his greatest works, the painting known as The Great Bathers in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it's a key piece in a new exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, called Renoir Drawings. Some of Australia's best chefs (and quite a few friends of the podcast) are heading north for a feast in the tropics and it's all thanks to chef Spencer Patrick and his Taste Port Douglas. Founder and culinary director of Chef-hatted Harrisons in the Sheraton Grand Mirage in Port Douglas, Spencer started his career in the UK where he was head chef at three of Marco Pierre White's restaurants in London before coming across to Australia in the early 2000s. At the Cafe Royal, Spencer garnered national acclaim by being awarded a Michelin Star at 26 years old, making him the youngest chef in the country to have done this. The Good Food Guide also awarded Spencer with 8/10 making him joint 3rd in London alongside Gordon Ramsey. Spencer arrived in Melbourne and worked with Raymond Capaldi and Gary Mehigan at Fenix before heading off around Australia with his wife Reina and settling in Far North Queensland. Spencer and Reina started Taste of Port Douglas in 2013 with the idea of promoting all the glorious produce they were enjoying in their now home. The festival has gone from strength to strength welcoming 10, 000 visitors last year. This year the stellar line-up includes Michael Wilson from Marguerite in Singapore – a first time for the festival international chef, Ben Williamson from Brisbane's Agnes, Aaron Ward from Bathers' Pavilion in Sydney, Colin Fassnidge, and names familiar to Victorians and some who have been on Conversation with a chef: Julian Hills from Navi, Ian Curley, Telina Menzies as well as Raymond Capaldi, Mark Best and Michael Lambie to name but a few. There are long lunches, a main stage, Masterclasses and restaurant takeovers and I would love to be there. Next year, for sure.

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of Scottish chamber-pop project The Bathers in just under twenty minutes.Referred to as 'the best-kept secret in Scottish music' The Bathers is the creative vehicle for singer-songwriter Chris Thomson. Initially active between 1985 and 2001 and reformed in 2016. In 2020, Lagoon Blues, Sunpowder and Kelvingrove Baby were reissued by Marina Records on limited edition vinyl.Chamber-pop or Baroque-pop is the fusion of pop music with elements of classical music exemplified in the mid 1960s by songs such as In My Life by The Beatles. The term originated in publicity for the Left Banke, whose music also embodied the style. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

If you have been lucky enough to see/hear our guest Paul Simpson in other conversations, you will know that he is very good value for money ( and why his book Revolutionary Spirit is so well loved!) No surprise then that our podcast conversation about his live gigs covered a lot of ground! In between Paul telling us about how his first gig actually wasn't his first gig ( and also how he managed to ‘invest' the bob-a-job money he had been keeping for his scout troop) – we were also treated to wonderful stories involving The Jam & Sting, and also why he set his dad's shirt on fire. No, really... When we got round to actually talking about his gigs, Paul covered everything from Roy Orbison to Hawkwind to The Fall to The Bathers ( and a must-see ‘gig that he had a ticket to but missed' that beggars belief). Oh, and he also proved conclusively that, back in the day, Glasgow was indeed a bit ' tasty'. Paul was great company and the time that we chatted literally flew in. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did recording it. Stay safe
Episode No. 642 features curator Simon Kelly and artist Marc Bauer. Kelly is the curator of "Matisse and the Sea," at the Saint Louis Art Museum through May 12. The exhibition examines the significance of the sea across Matisse's oeuvre. It especially examines SLAM's own 1907-08 Bathers with a Turtle, long considered one of Matisse's most challenging, enigmatic paintings. The excellent exhibition catalogue was published by the museum and Hirmer. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $45. Bauer is showing a 36-foot-wide charcoal and pastel mural titled RESILIENCE, Drawing the Line, 2023 in the latest installment of The Menil Collection's wall drawing series. The work adapts imagery from art history with cultural references specific to global and Houston-specific events. For this work Bauer is trying something new: he's repeatedly modifying the work over the course of its year-long display. It will be on view through this summer. Bauer was the 2020 recipient of the Prix Meret Oppenheim, Switzerland's most prestigious art award. His work is in the collections of museums such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Museum Folkwang, Essen, and he was included in the 2022 Congo Biennial in Kinshasa. In this Giggleaide we delve into a splashy tale from 1932, uncovering the debut of the backless bathing suit on Adelaide's sunny shores. Join us as we explore how these daring swimsuits turned heads (mostly the head of one easily offended Reverend), set trends, and marked a change in beach fashion history. It's a story filled with sun, sand, and a touch of scandal - that's scandal, NOT sandal!

Welcome to the latest of our occasional video shorts, where we get some of our friends to talk about their Live Music memories. Our guest for this episode was the writer & musician Chris Thomson from The Bathers. ( who we love!) We covered a wide range of bands, artists & venues with Chris, ranging from first gig recollections ( Bowie at The Glasgow Apollo, cool or what?!) - to most surprised gig ( Van The Man in a stookie) to the bucket gig artist he is still waiting to see ( Dylan) Along the way, we also talked about buying gig tickets by postal order, Argentina World Cup '78, and when Chris met one of his heroes, David Byrne. Oh, and he also mentioned in passing how much one of his friends loved Rush. No, really... As ever, Chris was in top form, and our chat flew in. It's one beer/coffee length, unless you drink quicker than average - plus a link at the end to a song from his favourite ever gig.... Enjoy, and stay safe.

Over the past 50 or so years, Marilyn Minter has been on a roving exploration of feminist, sex-positive thinking. In her art-making, she harnesses the power of sexual imagery—a realm long controlled by men—and presents it through the lens of female desire. Among her most acclaimed works are her “Bathers” series, which reimagines classic female bathers; her “Bush” series, originally a Playboy commission; and a group of new portraits, currently on view at the New York gallery LGDR (through June 3), featuring impactful cultural figures she admires, such as Roxane Gay, Gloria Steinem, Lizzo, and Monica Lewinsky. On the episode, Minter talks about the unrealistic societal and body-image standards young women continue to face, the importance of embracing complexity and multiplicity in artwork, and the hope she has in the next generation to fight social injustice.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes: [00:49] Marilyn Minter[04:02] Bettie Page[06:10] Susie Bright[24:31] “The Joys (and Challenges) of Sex After 70”[27:31] HBO's The Deuce[33:37] Pamela Anderson for Parkett[40:33] LGDR[46:30] Minter's “Coral Ridge Towers” Series[52:19] Linda Yablonsky[53:23] Diane Arbus[55:24] James Harithas[56:35] Sylvia Mangold[56:59] Kenneth Snelson[58:16] Christof Kohlhöfer[01:04:15] Neville Wakefield[01:07:32] Planned Parenthood[01:07:45] ADLAR AR App

Art heists can often look and sound like something out of a Hollywood script. One time, two thieves lifted two Van Gogh paintings from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and they entered the premises through the roof -- Mission Impossible-style … ish. In this new season of Criminalia, we're telling the stories of, and looking at the motivations for, art heists throughout history. In this episode, we're talking about five men who were brazen enough to buy tickets to a museum and pull off an art heist in broad daylight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eve Eurydice speaks war and the romantic call of the drumbeat of war with the author Robert Steiner. This is how patriarchies survive: not rationally. I ask the question: So we are not posthistorical? I ask: We gave up the drachma for this? The contradiction here is that we in the West are saying How can he do this we are post war & at the same time we take sides & send weapons & money to one side so as to escalate the war & the numbers of the dead? We discuss the current war in Ukraine in the context of international history and patriarchy, the False Promise of the EU and of global capitalism. We thought war is over thanks to corporate globalism. We would all be Europeans. Prosperity would put an end to inherited racist animosities. But Patriarchy is our Drug and our Fatal Romance. ⚡️ A decent human puts the good of others above his own. A strongman sacrifices numerous lives to what he thinks is right, to his self-interest. When two strongmen go at it, they don't care the cost in lives. This is primal patriarchal drama: the younger strongman wants to castrate the older strongman, as Zeus did to Kronus, Kronus to Uranus. Zelensky is not the face of freedom. He's the younger face of nationalism. He's adept at blackmailing & guilt-tripping the West, replaying the familiar drama of patriarchal families. He's not an innocent. He cost lives. He would not placate the patriarch. He chose to fight the tyrant patriarch to the death. Mothers have placated patriarchs for millennia. That's the difference between patriarchy and non. It wasn't rational to leave Russia out of NATO & the EU but let most ex Soviet nations (the rest of Eastern Europe) & almost Turkey (Asia) in. What were they afraid of? The self fulfilling prophecy that is fear. Patriarchy is irrational. And yet it calls Nature irrational, Turning the stakes around. Change comes as Reversal of Fortune. Nothing lasts forever. Patriarchy insists that it can last forever because it cares not which side and which patriarch wins. The only good thing in democracy is change: the ruler must change, the more often, the better. One term in office would be best. ⚡️Robert Steiner is the author of Quill, Bathers, Passion l, Dread, Matinee, Nothing Lasts Forever, Toward a Grammar of Abstraction and more.⚡️ For more, go to https://Speaksexpodcast.com ⚡️ For books, art, merch by Eurydice, go to https://Eurydice.net ⚡️ For Apple podcast, subscribe to https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speak-sex-with-eve/id1448261953 ⚡️Find our video episodes at https://YouTube.com/SpeakSexwithEveEurydice ⚡️ #speaksex #eveEurydice #Eurydice #Eurudice --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speaksex/message
