Learning happens in Crisis. Eurydice Eve speaks with Richard Verity, Co-Founder, along with Meike Zeirvogel, of the Alsama Project which is based in the refugee camps in Lebanon and runs the four Alsama Schools, providing innovative education for refugee teenagers, primarily from Syria, in Beirut's Shatila and Bourj al-Barajneh camps. These schools condense 12 years of education into six, focusing on literacy, numeracy, and life skills through a tailored curriculum. They also integrate activities like yoga and cricket for holistic development. The students, most of whom lacked any access to education due to displacement and cultural barriers, benefit from these programs that aim to empower them for higher studies or employment. Alsama supports students who have missed years of education by offering a condensed curriculum that compresses 12 years of learning into six. Students are grouped by ability rather than age. The curriculum focuses on Arabic, English, and Math, alongside life skills and activities like yoga and cricket. This innovative approach helps refugee teenagers overcome illiteracy and prepares them for higher education, global citizenship and potential leadership roles back home. Alsama addresses barriers such as lack of documentation and combats challenges like child marriage through psycho-social support and community outreach. Alsama supports students in developing life skills through a holistic approach that integrates serious practical education and personal growth. Students engage in teamwork, communication, planning, financial literacy, time management lessons alongside academic subjects like Arabic, English, and Math. Activities such as critical thinking exercises and leadership training through cricket further enhance these skills. Alsama uses project-based learning to teach them how to solve real-life problems, such as budgeting or sustainable energy solutions, fostering adaptability and problem-solving abilities essential for the 21st-century workforce. Alsama integrates sports, particularly cricket, into its educational curriculum to foster teamwork, leadership, and physical training. Cricket is chosen as it is a non-contact sport that allows boys and girls to play together, promoting inclusivity and collaboration. The program emphasizes values like commitment and ambition while teaching communication, planning, and resilience. Beyond physical activity, cricket serves as a platform for empowerment and leadership development, helping students build confidence and transferable skills for their future. Eurydice Eve speaks with Sarah Gerard, the author of CARRIE CAROLYN COCO as well as Sunshine State, the novella Binary Star, and the novel True Love. The Carolyn Bush true crime story is the modern face of femicide : a young woman doesn't need to be married or romantically linked to be murdered by her domestic live-in. Before she was brutally stabbed to death by her roommate in 2016, Carolyn Bush was a 25 year old poet and a founding member of the nonprofit reading group Wendy's Subway in New York City. She believed in astrology & studied at Bard College student, as did her killer, Render Stetson-Shanahan. She was a friend to many, including Sarah who gathered her text messages, emails, blog posts, poems, essays, social media, marginalia and interviewed many of her loved ones recollections of her for this book. Render Stetson-Shanahan admitted to getting drunk and “smoking weed” with his brother before the incident. He also admitted that Bush was speaking on the phone when he asked her, “Guess what?” before he began stabbing her to death. “It was a horribly disturbing case,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “The knife sliced into her back and neck, puncturing her heart, lungs and a major artery.” The murderer, Render Stetson-Shanahan, 29, avoided second degree murder charges in Carolyn Bush's brutal murder in the Ridgewood apartment they shared, because his defense attorney Zachary Margulis-Ohnuma painted a picture of Stetson-Shanahan as a “kind and gentle” man, who “went crazy” the night he killed Bush because of a “marijuana induced hysteria” or psychotic break. The gruesome story made national headlines because the killer is the son of New Yorker cartoonist Danny Shanahan and of Janet Stetson, the Director of Graduate Admissions at Bard College. Queens prosecutors said Stetson-Shanahan was aware of his actions the night of the stabbing assault but Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter rendered a verdict of guilty of manslaughter in the second degree. The verdict carries a five to fifteen year sentence which means that Stetson-Shanahan could be let free for time already served with good behavior. Kevin lists his four rites of passage for healthy masculinity: the masculine principle of energy, the feminine principle of energy, healthy male embodiment and lighthood held in the heart space. We discuss Sacred Sons, Uncivilized Man, and other groups in the growing international movement of men getting together with other men and making “contact” and building brotherhood by accessing the embodied experiences that our ancestors spent their lives enjoying. This is a big wake up call for men. Their contribution must not be at the cost of their truth and fullness. Selfishness and selflessness are both misalignment. Men need to disconnect from the generational wealth imperative. We cannot be equal as long as only men pay. Eurydice Eve speaks with law student Alexis Masciarella about the ethics of robots and the dangers of blithely adopting them. We discuss the Ethics of Sex with Machines and of Escapism from Reality. With Europe's first sex robot brothel open in Barcelona and the first talking sex robot, "Harmony", available, we discuss the Pornification and Dehumanization of Sexuality, and the implications of Human Connection to Robots when Robots are introduced as substitutes for humans. We humans connect with inanimate objects by imagining them animate. “The caregiver effect”: when we nurture a machine that presents itself as a dependent, we get emotionally attached to it. Human Sclerosis is an emotional hardening toward actual people. We may become more callous towards human suffering by ‘practising' on mock humans. We may strengthen our darker desires by indulging them in virtual settings. Sex Robots desensitize people. Robot-makers present them as therapeutic tools that limit real world harm. But they name and humanize them. This violates Respect for humanity. Robots that are designed to please men make it harder for men to have sex with real women. Child sex robots are defined as robots designed to look and act like a child. The law views child sex robots as sex toys. Roboticists claim that child sex robots can cure pedophilia. But is it either or? Either rape human or rape machine? And might they be manufacturing perverts for profit? Most users buy sex toys out of curiosity. Toys change a person's understanding of what sex is. What if a robot gives a person a taste of pedophilia he might never know he had? What if he experiments with a robot and likes it and becomes only attracted to minors? Is there a symbolic harm being done to society? What's the difference between computer generated child porn and child sex robots? We have no restrictions on the importation of child sex dolls into the US. There is no legal rule that bans their purchase and sale in the interests of child protection. It is unclear whether they offer any positive interventions for treating people with paedophilic predilections. The risk of harm for children may increase, if people who use child robots for sex become encouraged to try real children for sex. The child robots could be a gateway drug, in consequentialist reasoning. They could lead to or encourage offences against children in the real world. What should the legal system do about these devices? It permits them on the grounds that, unlike child pornography, the child sex robot or doll does not involve any direct harm to children. A mild legal moralism may be due. Moralistic laws prohibit the desecration of corpses, for example, even when such desecration causes no direct or indirect harm to others. Child sex robots are a paradigmatic example of symbolic harm; they are offensive and morally corrosive. ⚡️Mass insanity will happen at the intimate cross-pollination of humans and machines. Collective madness occurs when we stop knowing who's human and what's not human; then we will dehumanize each other. Morality starts with respecting living beings above all. We are evolving away from our humanity, from the aspects of us that AI can't replicate. AI is hardening us away from our primal instincts, our natural needs, our spiritual urges as the internet is emphasizing logos too much. How will people make a living? What Happens to Labor under climate change? What happens to all the people who live by the land when the land is no longer usable or factories are run by machines and robots? How are people going to live? We must revisit the structure of our economy: what we put money into and what we get money for. The way we treat women is directly tied with the way we view labor and what's wrong with the world. Our politics affects ordinary people. Incremental changes can lead to huge social changes that are destructive, or not. Every single one of us has the ability to change the system by refusing to participate and refusing to compete. We let Globalization happen. Begun by Reagan and continued by Clinton, it started with the gutting of labor unions; it brought down the cost of goods by sending labor out of countries that had labor unions. Now most people make less money and the super rich make more and the rest try to become super rich. In the 50s 65% of Americans 2 out of 3 belonged to a union. Now its under 20%. We go into recession once a decade because we no longer have a means of production in the US. We only have the 1%, the people who own the capital, the top of the pyramid. They own corporate real estate, industry, banking, and pay no taxes, because they don't sell anything anymore, they have no income, they live off loans and acquire and acquire and invest. They spend and hoard. By not paying taxes they don't contribute to society. The richest people don't produce anything. Substructure is the plutocracy (the minority in control of the means of production, the 3,000 people who own 85% of the economy, the 1% that controls 85% of the wealth and runs the country that runs the world). America has a winner takes all economy that keeps wealth in the hands of a tiny minority. The people in the minority may change but not the minority system. Ten years after Occupy Wall Street, the household debt in the US is $15.8 trillion, more than the US deficit even, and that's how are all beholden to this system. The Financialization of the Digital Network, the Monetization of Internet Technology, the growth of Crypto only accelerated the massive transfer of wealth to the few. The FED added $4.6 trillion to its balance sheet during the pandemic, hooking us deeper into the monetary feed. ⚡️Matt was an early critic of the big banks bailout under Obama & Bernanke. ⚡️Noam Chomsky just said that the US is tearing itself apart from within. We all have the religious impulse. Love is a crucible where we alchemically meet and merge into one; love requires trust, faith, and self-abnegation. Humans can only reclaim faith by self-sacrifice. We give something up to gain god. We cleanse the pressure of culture to regenerate it. Pre-institutional religion is transgressive. We have lived through the thesis of patriarchy for 6 millennia. Getting our self worth from external sources is one of the hooks that old culture has in us. In patriarchy we learn identity and language as a division (split) of ourselves: who we are told we are (our identities) and who we feel we are (our bodies) and the two become further and further removed so by the time we become sexual beings in puberty, when our bodies change? It becomes harder to know what our bodies say and pick up and alert us on, so a lot of our living becomes performative. We lose access to authentic reasons and so we behave to cultural reasons in order to get social reactions. We take advantage of our body as if it were a marionette or a puppet to get things we need from culture: work money approval success which is how our living becomes performative & that's our chronic pattern now so it's hard to switch out of cultural desire because self-objectification is culturally ingrained. How do we harmonize our body and mind, our nature and culture? Self integration is a warrior challenge. Syncing up ourselves is a worthy challenge. But feeling turned on by yourself is common; some experience it more like an orientation, feeling more aroused by themselves than by others. Autosexuals are more comfortable in their own company, unlike narcissists who crave outside attention & constant validation. E-games is bigger than any sport. People depend on broadband to connect electronically. Broadband should be public. Gaming Liberates young men from brutal bloody rituals of scarification & warmongering, from the duty of gutting each other, calling each other out to duels, being drafted to war, fighting it out; Boys can Experience all that metaphorically while growing up—can experience sexism aggression opposition competitiveness through roles & avatars. Emotional language is what we call the language of instinct. When we are unconscious, we let it tell the story we’ve heard or watched in the past enacted by others to our brain. But our Emotion can be rewritten. We can repeat the language we have seen our families use or we can create our own language. Love is a leap of faith. Separation is a leap of faith too. A leap of faith comes from our hearts. It is a process of our heart as well to accept and process and support the ending or the completion of a relationship as another version of our empowerment. Scars incl psychic scars and ancestral traumas are the vocabulary of therapy and they imply illness. Breakups are normal. 50% of marriages 60% of second marriages 70% of third marriages ‘fail.’ Practically speaking, the system has lied to our brains. Our brains expect relationship success must be everlasting. Rather than seasonal and cyclical. Nature goes through the annual season of beginning & ending, of birth & death & then rebirth. So do humans in nature. The darkness is nurturing. Hearts don’t break. The ego the identity breaks. That’s what hurts. It’s not humanly possible to sustain one couple per lifetime without outside enforcement, legal requirement, and authoritarian control. We have evolved legally, socially, morally, but not emotionally. We still speak in terms of the inherited drama modeled for us by TV & movies, by our ancestors & peers. The weight of our cultural inheritance pulls us in the direction of pain, the narrative of recrimination & victimization & revenge. We as individuals & as a society must rewrite the narrative of love & celebrate the courage that it takes to move on. We must resist the mass weight of the past. We must take up the work of resisting the pull of the previous millennia in order to hear our own new voice. We complete the relationship. We journal. We open healthy space. We hold emotion containers to be sad or angry in. We create an altar in nature. We Build ritual around our agency to fortify it. We exchange completion & consolation words. We hold a business meeting. We agree on how we will behave next. We find what we are grateful for. We give affirmations & thanks. There is no love greater than the strength to say goodbye.
