The New York Times published a list of the "100 best movies of the 21st century" so far. So KCUR's Up To Date assembled a panel of Kansas City movie critics to weigh in on the list — which they criticized as not diverse enough — and to find out what movies they'd rank at the top of the chart.
Critique of Hollywood and Media Bias: Cruz argues that the NYT list prioritizes political messaging over storytelling and entertainment. He claims the list reflects elitist, left-leaning Hollywood values and ignores popular, inspirational, or patriotic films. Alternative Film List: Cruz presents his own list of 30 films from the past 25 years that he believes are more representative of quality cinema. His selections include: Gladiator, The Patriot, A Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan, American Sniper, Hidden Figures, Top Gun: Maverick, and Avatar. He emphasizes true stories, war films, musicals, and movies with strong moral or patriotic themes. Personal Movie Preferences: Cruz shares his favorite films (The Princess Bride, The Godfather, Scarface, Fletch), and discusses his love for musicals and classic comedies. He recounts personal anecdotes, including taking his mother to Broadway shows and watching Saving Private Ryan and Dallas Buyers Club. Cultural Commentary: The conversation touches on broader cultural issues, such as the disconnect between Hollywood and everyday Americans, the importance of storytelling, and the role of cinema in shaping public perception. Sean and Amanda return to continue their yearlong project of listing the 25 best movies of the 21st century so far. Today, they discuss Christoper Nolan's ‘Oppenheimer', starring Cillian Murphy, one of the most iconic biopics of all time. They talk about their contentious decision to choose this film as the official Nolan selection for the list, wonder whether this will end up as the culmination of his career, and hypothesize what the film's legacy will ultimately be. It's an explosive episode of the Breakfast All Day podcast for you on this Fourth of July holiday. We begin with the big movie of the week, "Jurassic World: Rebirth" which aims to reboot the decades-long "Jurassic" franchise. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all wildly overqualified for running from freakish, mutant dinosaurs. In theaters. Next up is one of the best movies ever made, and that's not hyperbole: Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece "In the Mood for Love" is back in theaters for its 25th anniversary. If you've never seen this gorgeous, achingly romantic movie projected, here's your chance. The impossibly glamorous Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung co-star. Check here to see if it's playing near you: https://inthemoodforlove25.film/. Then we have another throwback review: "This Is Spinal Tap," which is in theaters for its 41st anniversary. The OG mockumentary about a British rock band on the decline is still hilarious and infinitely quotable all these years later. It's back for a limited run, and you can get tickets here: https://www.fathomentertainment.com/releases/this-is-spinal-tap/. Finally, we did our version of The New York Times' list of the best films of the century. We each picked 10 favorites from the past 25 years, but came at it from different perspectives with very different results. This was a tough but fun assignment! What would you put on your list? Thanks for being here and enjoy the holiday weekend! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
Ironheart is a new miniseries from Marvel Television. It is the 28th (not a typo) TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it concludes Phase Five of the MCU after six movies and eight series. Ironheart is set about six months after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which came out in 2022, but which is set in the spring of 2025 — which sets this show in our future, around the fall of 2025. It is the first Marvel product that The Nose has covered since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, more than two years ago. And: The New York Times has published its list of “The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century” as selected by more than 500 influential figures in and around the film industry. And on July 2, the Times published a follow-up list of the top 500 movies of the century* as submitted by its readers. The Nose participated, and it has thoughts about the whole thing. *I feel like I have to mention here that the Times is calling these lists the best of the “21st century” and that movies were eligible if they were released in the U.S. on or after January 1, 2000. The 21st century started on January 1, 2001. I’m sorry to bring it up. I don’t make the rules or, ya know, decide how counting works. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Senate Passes Big, Beautiful Bill In Hour 1 of the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, the hosts deliver a dynamic and timely breakdown of the Senate’s passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill”, a sweeping legislative package poised to reshape the political and economic landscape. Passed by a narrow 51-50 margin with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, the bill now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature, expected by July 4th. This hour dives deep into the bill’s key provisions, including a $5 trillion debt ceiling increase, hundreds of billions allocated for border security and national defense, and a projected $3.3 trillion budget deficit increase through 2034. The hosts analyze the political drama surrounding the bill’s passage, highlighting opposition from Republican Senators Rand Paul, Tom Tillis, and Susan Collins, and the expected reconciliation process in the House. Lefty Language Games Analysis of the Senate’s passage of the “big, beautiful bill,” a major piece of legislation expected to stimulate economic growth, provide tax certainty, and enhance border security. The hosts emphasize the bill’s imperfections but argue its net benefits outweigh its flaws, especially in the context of a government that often lacks the political will to reduce spending. A significant portion of the hour is dedicated to the unsustainable trajectory of federal spending, with references to past efforts by figures like Ross Perot, Senator Ron Johnson, and Senator Rand Paul. The hosts critique both parties for failing to curb entitlement growth and highlight how slowing the rate of spending increases is misleadingly labeled as “cuts.” They also explore how artificial intelligence and productivity gains could potentially offset fiscal challenges, offering a rare optimistic note on economic innovation. The Art of the Possible The Big Beautiful Bill now heads back to the House, where the Freedom Caucus may voice opposition, but it’s expected to reach President Donald Trump’s desk for signature before the July 4th holiday. A major highlight of the hour is President Trump’s visit to “Alligator Alcatraz” in Ochopee, Florida, a remote airstrip facility intended for detaining and deporting illegal immigrants. Trump’s remarks emphasized deterrence, warning migrants against fleeing into the Everglades. The segment underscores the administration’s tough stance on immigration and sanctuary cities, with speculation that legal challenges may arise from cities defying federal deportation orders. Best Movie of the 21st Century? Clay and Buck debate the best movies of the 21st century, referencing a recent New York Times list. Films like The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and The Pianist are discussed, with particular praise for Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker. The conversation also includes listener favorites and humorous disagreements over ice cream flavors—particularly pistachio—and nostalgic TV shows like Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.
