Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. My name is Matthew Eeles. In this episode, I'm joined by Danielle Stamoulos, the writer and lead actor of the impressive new short film, Gorgo. Regular listeners will notice that this Podcast episode is shorter than usual as it was originally recorded for my radio show on 2RRR. Danielle is an AACTA-winning Greek-Australian filmmaker, actor, and writer working across film, TV, and theatre. Her short film GORGO, which she created, wrote, and starred in, won the 2025 AACTA Award for Best Australian Short Film. It also screened at major festivals, including Santa Barbara, Flickerfest (winning Best Original Music), St Kilda, Newport Beach, and Rhode Island. Danielle also won Best Performance at the recent 2025 Stellar Film Festival. Inspired by Greek ‘promised brides' & Ovid's Medusa myth, Gorgo is a dramatic short film that tells the story of a Greek bride's cross-continental journey to marry a man she has never met. Matchmade by her best friend Athina, with promises of a new future in a distant land, Medousa finds herself arriving in Australia to a strange home—and a cold welcome. Thrust into her new marriage, she soon discovers a monstrous secret that threatens to tear apart the best friends' vow of sisterhood. I really hope you get to see the incredibly moving short film at some stage. Keep an eye on cinemaaustralia.com.au and we will try to keep you as up to date as possible. Anyway… enjoy.

With his feature documentary debut In the Trenches: The Making of Before Dawn, Benjamin Scotford has made a rare achievement within the Australian film industry: a behind the scenes documentary which follows the muddy and tough production of Before Dawn, Jordan Prince Wright's equally rare achievement, an indie war flick shot in the remote West Aussie landscape. Benjamin dives into the ditches of this WW1 epic, taking audiences behind the scenes for the highs, the lows, and the difficulties that the production faces with pulling off the impossible on a micro-budget.Benjamin is given unparalleled access to the production, capturing honest and open discussions from cast and crew that shows off the strength that it took to bring Before Dawn to life. From freezing cold rain to escaping sheep to earthquake level explosions, In the Trenches captures it all.In the following discussion, Benjamin talks about his entry point into documentary filmmaking, how working as a wedding videographer and on corporate gigs with local legends like Tony Galati aka the Spud King informed his guerilla style filmmaking, and the kinds of behind the scenes docos that inspired his work.In the Trenches is currently available on Bluray and DVD via CaptureBehindTheScenes.com.au.For those who are also keen to check out Before Dawn, head over to Umbrella Entertainment where you can buy it on physical media, or to Netflix where it's available to stream. In this podcast, I'm showcasing the beautiful restorative work of Brana Records and the atmospheric debut album of Mike Ladouceur (@mike-ladouceur), Between Worlds. Brana Records is a label that is focused on restoring the wonderful rare recordings by the Polish/Brazilian pianist, Felicja Blumental. As well as recording the great masterpieces such as the piano concertos of Grieg and Rachmaninoff, Ms Blumental championed neglected early 19th century piano composers such as Clementi, Kuhlau, Czerny, and solo piano music by Spanish and Portuguese Baroque composers. She enjoyed a relationship with leading composers such as Penderecki and Villa-Lobos - he dedicated his Fifth Piano Concerto to Ms. Blumental, which she performed under the composer with leading orchestras of Europe and recorded for EMI in Paris with the Orchestre National. Her appearances in South and North America brought her further stardom. Many of these recordings are now released on Brana Records and all CD covers feature the fine art prints of Felicja Blumental's husband, Markus Mizne. It was a delight to receive a copy of one of these CDs; Ms Blumental's beautiful artistry and shimmering pianism shines through her recordings. Visit branarecords.com to learn more about Brana Records and purchase these CDs. Last week, I spoke to Mike Ladouceur, known for working on blockbusters like Ad Astra and Mission Impossible – Fallout, as well as the BBC hit TV series His Dark Materials. Mike's debut album, Between Worlds, is out now. It features 42 of London's top musicians - the music was recorded at Angel Studios and is published by Warp Publishing. Between Worlds was designed as a multi-artform, immersive experience. The album is accompanied by bespoke videos, presenting space scenes from NASA's satellite photography with stunning landscapes taken on earth from drone footage filmed by Phillip Whiteman. Nick Denman's album artwork uses the Automatic Drawing process, and is a series of paintings with acrylic and charcoal on canvas. In this interview, we talked about some of the ways online teaching can benefit music students during this current crisis. We also discussed the importance of narrative and individuality within a composer’s voice, and this is something that is very much at the heart of Between Worlds. We talked about the creative process behind the album and the collaboration between other narrative media. Many thanks to Jonathon Tester for putting me in touch with Mike about his wonderful projects, and to Mike for taking the time to talk to me! Interview recorded 1st May 2020; published 9th May 2020. Mike's film and TV credits include music for Dateline (NBC) and Aurora Fearnley's epic Sci-fi Pulsar (Little Northern Light/Reel Issues Films), which stars David Gyasi and Jessie Buckley. Mike enjoys working with the internationally celebrated composer Lorne Balfe, and has written additional music and arrangements for His Dark Materials (HBO/BBC) and for Master Moley (Nottage Productions) starring Gemma Arterton, Charles Dance, Julie Walters, Warwick Davis. Mike worked as Orchestrator on major projects including Ad Astra (Plan B), Gemini Man (Skydance/Paramount), and worked on the Music Department of Mission Impossible: Fallout (Paramount), The Emoji Movie (Sony) and Call the Midwife (BBC). Mike’s notable career highlights are many and varied, and include winning the Angel Award for Best Original Music, Short Film for BirthCloud, and the Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding musical contributions at the Royal College of Music, presented in March 2016 by HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. Mike is a passionate educator and holds prestigious teaching posts at two of the world's leading institutions, London's Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge, where he teaches the film music curriculum at both undergraduate and Master's levels. Mike is signed to Warp Publishing.

His music changed direction with more of an orchestral, rock score and worked alongside Riva Taylor on the vocals for the game. “Drawing upon his garage rock band days, Housden creates melodic, original music scores which illuminate imaginary worlds with real emotion and immersion.” They discuss advice for composers, current state of the industry and beyond!

Mike and Tommy (Kevin is on a self-imposed suspension) talk to composer David Newman who wrote the Mighty Ducks theme and scored the music for D1. Newman gives an insight into Hollywood and explains why the theme wasn't that hard to come up with. Show notes David Newman's IMDB. And his Wikipedia. And his website. Alfred Newman's Wikipedia. David's father did this: The summary for Critters, the first movie Newman got hired for, which also happened to have eventual Mighty Ducks director Stephen Herek as director: "A race of small, furry aliens make lunch out of the locals in a farming town." The Mighty Ducks theme: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure: three years after Critters, three years before Mighty Ducks. Tommy Boy: great film. David lost out on the Academy Award for Best Original Music or Comedy score to The Full Monty in 1998.  Mike was looking at the Best Original Song category, where an Anastasia song lost to "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. Five Flights Up came out in May. It stars Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton, as a New York couple who deal with all kinds of issues when they prepare to move away.
