Binu 'Ben' Varghese is a PhD student in religion and society at Princeton Theological Seminary. His research focuses on intersections of race, politics, and religion among Indian diasporas in transnational contexts. He draws his theoretical formulations from the colonial history of Dutch slavery in India and alternative readings of Indian American history and memories. In addition to his research project, Binu is also interested in religion and capitalism, and religious nationalisms in India and America. He is currently serving as the editorial assistant of the Journal of World Christianity. His upcoming research essay is titled “Liminality as Decoloniality: Decolonizing Indian American Christianity,” which will be published in The Routledge Handbook of Politics and Religion in Contemporary America. Para muchos de nosotros –especialmente en este terrible momento del mundo, en estos tiempos trágicos de pandemia—no es fácil ni parece algo natural dar gracias. Tenemos voces de lamento, tenemos preguntas, en algunos casos tenemos quejas… tenemos dudas, una voz que no es de alabanza al Señor. No es fácil agradecer a Dios en todo tiempo. Por eso existen los agradecedores designados, los músicos cristianos, los cantantes del coro, porque nos ayudan a dar gracias, aún cuando no podemos hacerlo. En este tiempo tan difícil, los cantantes de los coros han tomado la voz del pueblo de Dios y han ofrecido himnos de acción de gracias. Ellos nos representan. En lugar de negarnos a agradecer, decidimos agradecer con la voz de nuestro hermano o hermana que va a cantar. En su canto estamos representados, porque hay tiempos como este, en los que no es fácil agradecer. De este modo se cumple algo lindísimo, el pastoreo mutuo. Quiere decir que los himnos y cánticos tienen una función pastoral. Cuando la palabra de Cristo mora en abundancia en nuestros cantos, realizamos la función de pastorearnos unos a otros. Sabemos que hay muchas preguntas y misterios. Le decimos al Señor: No entiendo por qué está pasando esto, estas tragedias terribles, pero la voz de los agradecedores designados nos afirma –‘da gracias al Señor, porque su amor es eterno; para siempre es su misericordia'. Por lo tanto, en este momento, cuando parece que todo se ha derrumbado, lo que nos corresponde hacer es aferrarnos a la única convicción que todavía queda en pie, que Dios renueva su misericordia cada mañana. Así decimos con el profeta Jeremías: “Algo viene a mi mente que me llena de esperanza: que tu amor no se acaba, tu compasión no se agota. Todos los días es nueva por tu gran fidelidad”. Participemos en este ministerio de dar gracias. Hay quienes, entre nuestros familiares, vecinos o amistades, que no agradecen a Dios. Hagámoslo nosotros. Seamos ese pueblo sacerdotal que fue redimido por la sangre del Cordero. Cristo nos hizo sacerdotes y sacerdotisas para representar a nuestro pueblo y a nuestro mundo delante de Dios. Demos la mano, el corazón y la voz para quienes tienen el corazón quebrantado, para quienes sienten que no les sale la voz. Los antiguos israelitas celebraron la reconstrucción de la muralla de Jerusalén. Nosotros tenemos mucho que celebrar. Celebramos lo que Dios ha hecho por el mundo en JesuCristo, y lo hacemos con nuestra vida y con nuestros cánticos. Con nuestras acciones y con todo el corazón. Una función esencial ESCUCHAR: Nehemías 12:8 (La Palabra) Los levitas eran: Josué, Binuí, Cadmiel, Serebías, Judá y Matanías que, con sus parientes, se encargaban de los himnos de acción de gracias. PENSAR: Dios quiere que cultivemos la gratitud por todo y en todo. Pero ¿cómo podemos agradecer en todo tiempo? Para muchos de nosotros –especialmente en este terrible momento del mundo, en estos tiempos trágicos de pandemia—no es fácil ni parece algo natural dar gracias. Tenemos voces de lamento, tenemos preguntas, en algunos casos tenemos quejas… tenemos dudas, una voz que no es de alabanza al Señor. No es fácil agradecer a Dios en todo tiempo. Por eso existen los agradecedores designados, los músicos cristianos, los cantantes del coro, porque nos ayudan a dar gracias, aún cuando no podemos hacerlo. En este tiempo tan difícil, los cantantes de los coros han tomado la voz del pueblo de Dios y han ofrecido himnos de acción de gracias. Ellos nos representan. En lugar de negarnos a agradecer, decidimos agradecer con la voz de nuestro hermano o hermana que va a cantar. En su canto estamos representados, porque hay tiempos como este, en los que no es fácil agradecer. De este modo se cumple algo lindísimo, el pastoreo mutuo. Quiere decir que los himnos y cánticos tienen una función pastoral. Cuando la palabra de Cristo mora en abundancia en nuestros cantos, realizamos la función de pastorearnos unos a otros. Y también colaboraron en la obra los sacerdotes residentes en la llanura. Benjamín y Jasub restauraron el tramo que estaba frente a su casa, mientras Azarías, hijo de Maasías y nieto de Ananías, hacía lo propio con el de la suya. Por su parte Binuí, hijo de Jenadad, restauró el tramo que va desde la casa de Azarías hasta el rincón del Ángulo. Palal, hijo de Uzay, restauró el sector que está enfrente del Ángulo y enfrente de la torre que sobresale en el palacio del Rey, la que da al patio de la cárcel. A continuación Pedaías, hijo de Parós, y con él los donados que vivían en el Ófel restauraron en dirección este hasta llegar frente a la Puerta de las Aguas y la torre que sobresale. Los tecoítas repararon el tramo que está frente a la Gran Torre que sobresale hasta llegar al muro del Ófel, mientras los sacerdotes lo hicieron en el tramo que cada uno tenía frente a su casa a partir de la Puerta de los Caballos. PENSAR: En la lista de los participantes en la reconstrucción de la muralla aparece un dato muy interesante. Se menciona el nombre de quien estuvo al frente de cada porción, hasta completar el circuito de toda la muralla, y también se menciona que hubo quienes construyeron “el tramo que estaba frente a su casa”. La reconstrucción fue una tarea demasiado grande para una sola persona. Fue necesario que participaran muchos, trabajando en porciones más pequeñas (alrededor de cuarenta), para poder completar la obra. Así es también en el trabajo de la iglesia. Cada miembro debe hacer su parte. En el ejemplo de quienes reconstruyeron “el tramo que estaba frente a su casa” aprendemos varias lecciones. Para empezar, es una lección de optimización de los recursos. En vez de ir a reconstruir al otro lado de la ciudad, ellos trabajaron cerca, sin tener que trasladar su trabajo a gran distancia. Pero también hay una lección de pertinencia. La reconstrucción es algo que nos atañe personalmente, cotidianamente, de manera doméstica. Es algo que hacemos desde nuestra realidad personal, desde nuestra casa. El trabajo será bueno porque está en juego nuestra casa. Quienes han compartido el mismo techo durante el confinamiento tienen la responsabilidad de la reconstrucción “del tramo que está frente a su casa”. Esto significa que la reconstrucción comienza en nuestro círculo más inmediato. Busquemos al Señor, para renovar nuestro corazón. Que Dios comience su buena obra de reconstrucción, primero en nosotros, y luego podemos continuar con nuestra familia y amistades cercanas.
