Bishi is an artist, composer and producer born in London of Bengali heritage. Trained in both Hindustani and Western Classical styles, she has released and composed three albums, several EPs, movie and documentary soundtracks, and tirelessly advocates for the elevation of women, trans, and non-binary creative practitioners in music and technology. From coming up in London's queer underground in the 90s, Bishi has carved out a career path precisely for herself – to be frank, she is completely bad ass. I first saw her perform many moons ago at Latitude Festival in 2009, and this conversation was a beautiful opportunity to connect with Bishi after she has gone on to achieve so much.We discuss music by Minty, Missy Elliott, and Kate Bush. Do you ever worry about how other people perceive you as an artist? This question is particularly loaded for women and gender expansive musicians because there's so much tied up with how femininity should be presented and received (and even what it is). It's for this reason that Isobel is sharing a Golden Nugget from EP#30 when she chatted with the amazing London based musician and producer, BISHI who spoke so candidly and articulately about how she's been received over the years.BISHI has always had a very strong visual element to her music, which has sometimes led to intense scrutiny and judgement. But it's interesting hearing how growing up surrounded by London's queer community helped her to approach her visual identity with a sense of boldness and play.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS{00:00} Intro{01:57} Receiving a passive aggressive response from people {04:47} Feeling free and confident to explore her artistic identity{07:28} Outro Listen to the full, original episode HERE >>And don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it with a friend.Eager to listen to the amazing music composed and produced by our fabulous Girls Twiddling Knobs guests? In 'Come Fly the World', journalist Julia Cooke explores the history and legacy of Pan Am, one of the world’s most iconic airlines. Julia focuses on the adventurous lives and careers of the international jet-age stewardesses of Pan Am – a job which no longer exists - who were expected to fit a specific physical profile, speak multiple languages and demonstrate diplomacy. As the women worked to maintain the glamourous image of Pan Am, they interacted with international politicians and helped to transport American soldiers to and from war zones, during the Vietnam War. The stewardesses witnessed global history and world events, playing a crucial role in major wartime missions including the evacuation of children during the fall of Saigon. Throughout the pandemic, pregnant women have been asked to make their own judgements on the risk of vaccination versus the risks of COVID-19. With very little real-world data available, that decision has been no easy task however two new large scale studies may now help prospective parents feel more confident in balancing the costs and benefits. One study of over 35,000 pregnant women given the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines showed no evidence of them being unsafe. The second study looked at what happens to pregnant women if they do catch COVID-19. Aris Papageorghiou, a Professor of Fetal Medicine at the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute, talks to Anita about the results of this global study. He also explains why we should consider allowing pregnant women to be vaccinated sooner, rather than making them wait for their age-related invite to arrive in the post. Hair removal is a rite of passage for a lot of women and apparently some influencers are encouraging shaving your face! Apparently facial hair removal is nothing new - Queen Elizabeth I started the trend by shaving her facial hair, and women even shaved their eyebrows off. So how popular is it with women today? Beauty therapist and make up artist Naveeda discusses. A new film called 'Sisters With Transistors' about the unsung female pioneers of electronic music, is released today. Featuring women like Clara Rockmore, Suzanne Ciani and Delia Derbyshire, of Dr Who theme fame, the film is narrated by Laurie Anderson and celebrates the achievements of women whose male counterparts took centre stage in historical narratives around ground-breaking electronic composition. The director Lisa Rovner joins Anita as does Bishi, the singer, composer and artistic director and co-founder of WITCiH, The Women in Technology Creative Industries Hub, a platform to increase the visibility women at the intersection of music, creative technology and STEM. Adam talks to career and life coach, Karen Bishi, about impostor syndrome: a condition that causes people to feel that they don’t deserve the success they have achieved. Is it OK to “fake it ‘til you make it”? What strategies can you use to free yourself from a condition that causes constant anxiety and worry? From high-profile celebrities such as Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, they discuss why some people can’t take the credit they deserve and instead constantly worry about being found out that they don’t “belong” in their position – and ways to overcome these feelings. Maxine Sanders is one of the country's most iconic and possibly most controversial witches. In the 1960s and 70s, she and her late husband Alex Sanders were at the centre of Britain's witchcraft boom. At the height of their fame, they were featured weekly in tabloid newspapers and starred in numerous documentaries and films where they would recreate their dramatic rituals… It was the era when Flower Power and the sexual revolution were in full swing. The Witchcraft Act was repealed in 1951 making it no longer illegal to practise witchcraft, and Maxine and Alex were sexing its image up. Their coven was rapidly growing in size, as more and more people were drawn to the occult, and eventually they moved from Alderley Edge, near Manchester, to Notting Hill in London, where musicians like Jimmy Paige and Marc Bolan flocked to their wild parties. But it was also where a strange set of circumstances saw them linked to Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders in California... Presenter Kate Hutchinson came across Maxine in a book that she'd bought on her birthday in 2019, from Donlon Books in east London – in it was a striking image of a stunning woman with long blond hair, holding a dagger, in the middle of a circle, and she knew she had to find out more. We finally tracked Maxine down to her home in North West London, where we sat in her living room, filled with amazing antique books and ancient magic regalia. What she told us may raise an eyebrow or two, as Maxine recounts her early years in the craft, meeting her husband – the King of the Witches, Alex Sanders, how she dealt with being the subject of a tabloid frenzy week on week, the meaning of being a witch today, what it feels like to do a spell, her experiences of astral projection, sex magic and death, and overcoming persecution. It's quite a magical ride, so strap in tight. This episode was produced by Hannah Fisher. 1. Malani Bulathsinhala - Wasan Karannata Bae 2. Roh Hamilton and Tiffany Seal - Enchanted Forest 3. Bishi - All Across The Universe (BISHI's 'The Telescope Eye,' EP, produced on by BISHI & Richard Norris. Out on Gryphon Records on all streaming platforms now) 4. Lobo Loco - Lake of Avalon

Singer, multi-instrumentalist, electronic sitar player, performer and DJ, Bishi has performed with everyone from Yoko Ono, Pulp, Goldfrapp, the LSO, and the Kronos Quartet. A glamorous and extravagantly costumed presence on stage, she's influenced by both Eastern and Western classical music as well as electronic dance, glam rock and folk music. Michael Berkeley talks to her about growing up with the music of her mother, Susmita Bhattacharya, a celebrated Indian classical singer who knew Ravi Shankar. Bishi has her own take on the sitar, which she plays like an electric guitar. A talented chorister and pianist as a child, she could have chosen a career in Western classical music, but instead has brought it to bear on her own panoramic musical style. She chooses music from Ravi Shankar's collaboration with Philip Glass, iconic film soundtracks she's used in her work as a DJ, a song she's sung from a Bulgarian choir and pieces from major influences Mica Levi and Meredith Monk. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.
