Today we welcome Dr. Erin Elliott for her second appearance here on the pod and her colleague Dr. Tarun Agarwal!   Dr. Erin Elliott grew up South of Boise (i.e. Southern California) but went away to a small NAIA school in Western New York in 1995 where she played collegiate soccer and graduated summa cum laude from Houghton College. After graduating Creighton Dental School in 2003, she settled in North Idaho to begin her general dentistry career at Post Falls Family Dental. She has a special interest in DentalSleep Medicine. She has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to spread the message that sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia can be screened for in your dental office AND can be treated. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.   Dr. Tarun Agarwal, DDS is considered one of the top dentists in the country. He is a recognized speaker, author, and dental leader. He has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and News 14 Carolina. Dr. Agarwal has been awarded '40 under 40' Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal.  He is regularly invited to teach other dentists around the world and recently built a training center within the practice dedicated to sharing his expertise.   Most importantly he is a loving husband and dedicated father of three wonderful children. His biggest accolade was being voted 'Best Dad in the World' by 2 of his 3 kids.   Today's episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at Phillips and their new Zoom delivered whitening kit! The demand for teeth whitening went down during the pandemic but with the world transitioning back into real life with parties and get-togethers for the upcoming holiday season, Irene has had an influx of patients at her practice asking for teeth whitening services. Finding that her inventory was low, she turned to the folks at Phillips and their Zoom delivered whitening service. All you need is to take a digital scan or impression and send it to the proprietary lab with a prescription like you would fill out for a mouth/sports guard or night guard. Phillips Zoom will then ship the whitening kit directly to your patient. Irene then created an instructional video that she could email to patients on how to use the product! Not only does this save the patient time, but it also saves the practice time and resources by not having to have the patient return to the office for the whitening treatment! It also gets the patient onboard and makes them a part of their own treatment plan. See the link below for more information on Phillips Zoom Delivered!   https://www.philips.ca/c-e/pe/teeth-whitening/philips-zoom-delivered.html   ------------------------------------------------------   Dr. Elliott and Dr. Agarwal share with Irene and Katrina how they met 5 years ago following a guest appearance Dr. Elliott made on another podcast that led to a small orthodontic scandal and how they have been working together ever since! They discuss the biggest challenge holding dentists back in their practice with sleep as well as how modern hygienists can bridge the gap between a patient's expectations of what a basic teeth cleaning appointment is and how to encourage them to take their treatment into their own hands.   Dr. Agarwal goes on to talk about why he has implemented digital impressions in his practice, the exciting outcomes of this implementation, how many scanners he currently has in his practice, as well as the culture of his practice and how important it is to him to invest in his staff and make sure they are fully participating in the culture that he has built.   They both share how they approach conversations around orthodontics with patients, and Dr. Elliott explains what Vivos is and how she feels about it. Lastly, they provide insight on the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the hygienist and tips on how a hygienist can get their dentist onboard with wok they are interested in infusing into their practice.   Reach out to Dr. Erin Elliott at:   @erinelliottdds on Instagram and Facebook   Reach out of Dr. Tarun Agarwal at:   @tbonespeaks on all social platforms except twitter or at his podcast: Tbone Speaks Podcast     ------------------------------------------------------   As always, our hosts encourage you to leave them a rating and review!   Find more episodes at https://www.toothordare.ca/        Follow us on Instagram! The Dental Sleep Medicine Recipe for Success: Episode #289 – Part 5 – Billing and Documentation with Dr. Mark Murphy Screening and treating your patients might've been easy. But now comes the worst part — billing and documentation. In the final episode of this five-part series, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Mark Murphy to help you understand the biggest barrier to success in DSM. His solution? Outsource! To learn how outsourcing could benefit you, your staff, and your practice, listen to Episode 289 of The Best Practices Show! If you missed any of the previous episodes, be sure to go back and listen to Episodes 285 – 288! Main Takeaways: Over 90% of dentists will quit DSM out of frustration with documentation. Outsource! Third party companies know how to communicate with insurance companies. Outsourcing will save you time, money, and give you peace of mind. Third party billing and documentation companies know how to get you paid! There are only 4% of dentists doing DSM. The population of people with obstructive sleep apnea is growing. Quotes: “Whatever an hour or an hour-and-a-half is worth to you, write that down. When we finished using a third party as a documentation support software system . . . I would not spend three minutes at the end of my last patient finishing my documentation for the day, because there's a checklist, there's punching buttons. Everything gets done automatically.” (03:06—03:43) “When I've talked to people who said, ‘Well, I've tried sleep medicine, but I just quit,' I said, ‘Why'd you quit?' The number-one answer is, ‘I couldn't get paid.' I said, ‘Why couldn't you get paid?' ‘Well, we tried to bill.' ‘Did you try to do it yourself?' ‘Yes.' I go, ‘That might be the problem.'” (03:47—04:00) “90% to 95% will quit doing dental sleep because of the documentation.” (04:59—05:02) “If you say, ‘The hour I spend cutting the lawn every week is like Zen meditation,' then knock yourself out and do it. Absolutely. Let me tell you, you're not going to feel that way about documentation and billing.” (05:57—06:08) “I probably pay $300 a month for my software. I probably pay $49 a claim and 8% for my claims. That is a cost of doing business. That is a cost of not having to spend an hour-and-a-half at the end of my day, or not having to upset my team by trying to get them to do something that they're not capable of doing.” (13:03—13:21) “The billing and documentation part, I always say, are the biggest barriers to success in dental sleep medicine. What I probably should say is they're the biggest barriers if you try to do them yourself.” (23:55—24:06) “The number of people that have obstructive sleep apnea in our population is growing faster than the number of people we're treating.” (25:55—26:02) “There are 180,000 dentists, 150,000 GPs, ballpark. Maybe 6,000 dentists are doing dental sleep medicine. That's 4%. . .  So, there's an incredibly large population of patients in need, and it's growing . . . So, if you decide to cross that chasm and step into the arena to do some dental sleep medicine, it's a pretty easy downhill path.” (27:16—27:54) Snippets: Synopsis. (02:24—04:25) What outsourcing really means. (04:47—06:16) Myths of medical insurance. (06:42—10:35) Things to know about billing and documentation to get started. (11:05—13:21) Third party billing companies get you paid. (13:38—16:07) SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) notes. (16:21—19:40) Why Dr. Murphy chose to be a Medicare provider. (21:19—23:31) Last thoughts on billing and documentation. (23:55—25:09) The future of dental sleep medicine. (25:33—28:12) Advanced education and associations to join. (28:18—32:59) Closing. Erin Elliott, D.D.S., is a dental, sleep, and breathing specialist and in this informative podcast, she shares some of her vast knowledge of the aforementioned, amassed over her extensive career. Dr. Elliott is an ASBA Board Certified Diplomate. The ASBA is the American Sleep and Breathing Academy, a professional academy that promotes excellence in many areas of her specialty such as the various upper airway, breathing, and sleep issues in sleep-related dental medicine. The doctor's educational path to her current career included graduation from the noted dental school, Creighton University Dental School in Omaha, NE.   Dr. Elliott talks about her background, and how she became motivated to study and work in the field of dentistry and sleep-related dental medicine. After much personal research of her own, she came to the realization many years ago that dentists were actually well-equipped to help patients with their breathing and air flow issues. She became a champion of these breathing-related issues and set out to change the way we think about sleep and breathing conditions, such as sleep apnea. As she describes, her entire team at her dentistry practice is trained to identify signs and symptoms of potential breathing and airway issues.    The sleep and breathing expert talks about constriction of the space that the tongue has and other issues that impact breathing and flow. She talks about the connection between heart and oral health. She details some of the older treatments for snoring that did not actually treat the problem of apnea itself. And she discusses various current sleep/breathing aids such as the many varieties of CPAP machines. CPAP, which stands for ‘continuous positive airway pressure,' is provided to patients who wear a face mask, while sleeping, which is connected to a pump (the CPAP machine) that forces air into the nasal passages and helps them overcome obstructions in the airway.   Dr. Elliott is a noted speaker and educator on sleep apnea and she has been published in countless dental journals. She is currently a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, as well as the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
