He's got an independent, fantasy adventure comic on Kickstarter called Rogues' Kingdom with James Robinson and Brennan Wagner. We talk and look at some images (see our Youtube version of this podcast!) but mostly we get Jeff's ethos on storytelling and dig into the life of a comic book artist. Listen and learn from a master storyteller who along with Dan Panosian, and Dave Johnson, formed The Original Drink and Draw Social Club. Are comics going more towards independent production since they are such valuable intellectual properties for adaptation into other mediums OR are independent comics some of the last truly unique stories available in popular media? Today we have the second of two episodes with Greg's interviews from the recent Baltimore Comic-Con. Lots of comics talk with creators representing both coasts in this one, but there's no East Coast/West Coast beefing here; just good comic booking. Things kick off with cartoonist Jeff Parker. We talk a little Flash Gordon, some editorial hijinx on his recent Shazam mini, why everyone thought Doc Shaner owed him an apology, how Sandy Jarrell draws such believable teenagers, and just what Parker's role at Periscope Studios really is. Apparently a lot of TV watching and goofing off is involved. Next comes the Portland-based artistic team of Dan Schkade and Brennan Wagner. Dan's name popped up in my last talk with Brennan, but now we get to hear from them both in stereo. We cover Dan's recent work on The Spirit, some of his influences and philosophies, and which 90's X-Man would be their choice for a career & character-defining run. Finally we jet on over to Brooklyn (aka the other side of the convention floor) and check in with Christa Cassano, Gregory Benton, Dean Haspiel, and Chris Miskiewicz of Hang Dai Studios. We talk new books, old work, Danish hospitality, the benefits of mixing influences, Seth Kushner, watercolors versus gouache, and more. Our intrepid hosts welcome Brennan Wagner to the show to discuss growing up in comics, aspirations to carve his own path, and his work on the exciting new "The Spirit."
When you go into the same field as a successful parent, there are inevitably going to be comparisons about how you measure up to their accomplishments. When you're Brennan Wagner and that parent is Matt Wagner, the accomplishments you're measuring up against are numerous. But Brennan hasn't let that stop him. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone dealing with it with more grace and humor than Brennan. Greg got a chance to finally talk to Brennan about not only his current work on the "Django/Zorro" series written by his father and drawn by Esteve Polls, but what it was like growing up in a family that also included just-retired legendary editor Diana Schutz and editor at Legendary (and Dark Horse, Oni, DC...) Bob Shreck! Brennan drops some truth bombs about being a colorist in this industry, just how many Eisners Dave Stewart has, his own art preferences and influences, and the joys of home-cooked meats. All that and more on today's episode! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Enjoy your funny books.
