It's a lovely selection of Weird Things (that's writer Brie Williams' specialty) and it'd be sweet if it wasn't for the human sacrifices. What definitely isn't sweet is the final episode of the final (...so far...) season of Mayor of Kingstown. Giant spoiler warnings, because we go through this episode in detail, discussing how dumb Ian is for getting buddy-buddy with a serial killer, how Evelyn is going to get herself killed, how Robert went from our favorite character to "holy cow he's going off the rails and it's ANNOYING," and how much the ending was a total bummer. Not a BAD ending you understand, just not one that's going to make you feel very good. This week's outro is a clip from Remember to Hope by Geb. From there we jump into three more Oscar nominated films we finally watched, namely Oppenheimer (brilliant but a bit too long, with "the most unnecessary nude scene ever"), Elemental, and Nimona. While we think Pixar usually has the better shot at winning the Animated Feature award, we're really pulling for Nimona. Along the way we wander off into tangents like the Hot Ones show, Florence Pugh, Redbox, nerd underwear, and the REALLY STUPID ADS in Amazon Prime. This week's outro is a clip from Keepsake by Beat Mekanik. Clarification: Redbox is 2.25, but that's just for one night, once you double it it's about the same as most of the 2-night rentals from Prime. Correction: Elemental did have a theatrical release, but according to the New York Times it had "the worst opening in Pixar history." It's since become a lot more successful. Correction #2 - Annapurna Pictures is the production company that took over from Blue Sky Studios when Disney axed Nimona. Kathryn got her Soot Sprite undies from All Teh Smol Things. Are you aware of how your biases—both conscious and unconscious—impact your investment decisions? Brie Williams of State Street Global Advisors joins me in this conversation to talk not only about the impact of biases on decision-making but how to cultivate an awareness of your biases to change your behavior, ultimately leading to better decisions.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [1:33] Brie's role at State Street Global Advisors [3:33] The role of emotion in decision-making [7:00] How your mindset can influence behavior  [11:15] Common investor biases that influence decisions [19:05] Ways you can manage your biases [23:36] How to overcome anchoring bias [30:38] Embracing resilience as an investor  Common investor biases that influence decisions What are the most common biases that impact decision-making? Most can be grouped into cognitive and emotional biases. Hindsight bias, confirmation bias, and anchoring bias are typically the most impactful cognitive biases in the realm of finance. Hindsight bias occurs when an investor tends to believe that after an event occurred that they predicted it. So when the market crashes they claim they “knew” it was going to happen.  Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms an existing belief, often accompanied by ignoring contradictory information.  Anchoring occurs when you rely too heavily on an initial piece of information and you anchor future decisions to that piece of information (i.e. you anchored to the price you bought a stock at). Emotional biases stem from impulses or intuitions, heavily influenced by feelings. Examples are loss aversion and overconfidence.  Loss aversion happens when an individual feels the pain of a loss far more intensely than the pleasure of gains. It might manifest by holding on to a stock too long hoping that it will rebound (but selling would be the rational choice). Overconfidence is a bias where an investor has an inflated belief in their ability to predict a market movement or winning investments. You're likely to lean on your research while ignoring the things you can't control, like changing market conditions. We need to recognize that we all have conscious and unconscious biases. We need to gain self-awareness to reflect on how we approached past decisions. Self-reflection allows us to uncover blind spots and recognize patterns in decision-making. Brie points out this is always easier to do with an objective advisor.  How to overcome anchoring bias Anchoring bias comes into play when you're failing to adjust to new information. Do you have a sunnier outlook or focus on the more negative side of the equation? You have to recognize that your life view will impact your definition of success. You need to focus on objectivity when you come across new information so you don't overweight the past.  Mindset is just one factor of many that will shape your decisions and perceptions as an investor. How do you respond? Anchoring exists as a bias but it can be disrupted with practice. Mindfulness and how you approach decision-making is worth working on for a healthier construct for decision-making.  How do you avoid analysis paralysis? How can we close our behavior gap to improve decision-making to achieve better outcomes? The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/02/binary-system-podcast-397-wtnv-241-he-is-still-holding-a-knife/ When we last heard from Night Vale in December, Cecil was being held hostage by a strange boy with a large knife, and this week's episode picks up right where we left off. It's another Brie Williams story so you know there's going to be delightful lists of really weird things. Knives! Trapper Keepers! Field Trip Carnage! Blood Drive cleanup! Door Dash delivery delayed on account of tar and feathers! AND MORE KNIVES DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE KNIVES. After the recap Kathryn gives the thumbs up to Oppenheimer, which doesn't need an IMAX viewing because it's a great movie that's going to win a bunch of awards, but aside from the bit with the bomb (...spoilers?..) it is mostly Very Dramatic Scenes of People Talking, so regular screens are fine. This week's outro is a clip from Wayside by Hotham. Be sure to check out the Black Com!x Day photo gallery. The podcast Elizabeth mentioned is the 90-Minute Film Fest, celebrating movies under an hour and a half long. Regarding the little outtake clip at the end, Elizabeth was referring to a couple of Supernatural-related podcast episodes she found: we were never huge fans of Supernatural, so we thought the finale was more silly than anything else. But Elizabeth stumbled on an episode of The Fangirl Business: A Supernatural Podcast, and it really sheds light on how traumatized some of the long-time fans were by the finale. (And for some lighter listening, one of their more recent episodes is about how much they enjoyed the season 1 finale of The Winchesters, which seems to have taken some of the sting out of the Supernatural finale.) How Women Can Build a Better Relationship With Money with Brie Williams, #143

Women have come a long way in terms of owning their financial power. That's not to say there aren't still challenges or wage discrepancies, but globally women are poised to take center stage as their earning potential grows. On this episode, I am joined by Brie Williams to discuss tips and strategies for women to build a better relationship with money, achieve their financial goals, and prepare for a successful retirement. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Getting to know Brie Williams and unpacking our personal relationships with money [0:42] Developing positive and realistic money habits [8:26] Creating a budget, paying off debt, and saving for the future [13:16] Keeping track of your finances [18:29] Three financial tips every woman needs [23:20] Taking back your financial power In 1974, the US government passed the Fair Credit Opportunity Act, which made it illegal for financial institutions to discriminate based on religion, race, national origin, or gender. For the first time EVER, women could apply for and hold their own credit cards and exercise unprecedented financial independence. However, generations of gender-based discrimination left a financial literacy gap that is still felt today. That's why people like Brie Williams are committed to empowering women to own their finances and achieve their financial goals. Many of our ideas around money come from childhood. Our family's attitude towards money will impact our own whether we want it to or not. Thankfully, Brie's mother had a healthy outlook on money, and ensured she started gaining financial literacy at a young age. But many people grow up in households where money is the greatest source of stress. This could lead to all sorts of unhealthy relationships with money. Maybe you avoid it and thus avoid planning for the future of retirement. Or perhaps you spend excessively to feel safe. Whatever your financial hang-up is, it's time to put a plan in place to get control of your financial future. Practical steps for healthier finances One of the best ways to develop a better relationship with money is mindfulness. Simply being aware of how you're spending money can take that relationship in a positive direction. There are several safe apps out there to help you keep track of your finances, but a good ole fashioned pen and paper works too. Having financial conversations is another way to increase money mindfulness. Culturally, we are taught not to talk about money, and women are specifically targeted with this kind of rhetoric. We have to break out of stereotypes and normalize the money conversation for everyone. Discuss your financial goals with trusted family and friends or a financial advisor to make the most out of financial planning. Everyone is on a journey with their finances. You will make mistakes. But the journey is about gaining competence over time and celebrating the small wins. When we acknowledge our progress, however small, we motivate ourselves to achieve the next positive step. This makes the journey more rewarding because we're developing healthy financial habits and gaining experience as we go. Listen to this episode for more on building a better relationship with money! Night Vale citizens will need to hoard everything they can to survive (yes, even that box of stale Flavoroos on the counter.) To help out, the Night Vale Sanitation Department is allowing everyone to comb through the junk they've previously disposed of and take one item back. Anything you want. Anything at all. Really? You're taking that back? Are you sure? After recapping this weeks episode (featuring the triumphant return of writer Brie Williams) we have a long discussion about the latest Lore Olympus episode, and try to parse out which secret Apollo is going to spill the beans about, who he's going to spill them to, and exactly how big of a clusterf**k this is going to cause. We also talk about the "Get Back" Beatles documentary, and Elizabeth wants everyone to watch the first episode of "Raised By Wolves" but she's not going to tell you why. The outro music this week is a clip from Voyageur by Monkey Warhol. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Want to buy them (or yourself) a square foot of a castle in Scotland? Look no further! In today's episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Brie Williams, Vice President and Head of Practice Management at SPDR Exchange Traded Funds. Women make up half of the population, but they are vastly underrepresented in the investment industry.  Traditionally, they have been economically disadvantaged relative to their male counterparts.  In recent years, however, there has been a changing role for women as financial decision-makers. How can financial advisors help women break through the barrier of navigating into the investing world? Rusty and Robyn talk with Brie about the SHEconomy, the changing role of women as financial decision-makers, and how to encourage women to be part of the investment industry. Key Takeaways [3:16] - What attracted Brie to the marketing field. [5:59] - How advertising contributed to her early success. [7:35] - Her role at SPDR Exchange Traded Funds. [10:33] - What the statue of the fearless girl represents. [13:13] - The impact of the fearless girl after four years. [16:06] - How the dynamic is shifting to make women the new face of wealth. [19:12] - Why women's overall experience in the investment industry is less than positive. [25:24] - The unique challenges women investors face. [27:26] - How financial advisors recognize and overcome gender bias. [29:33] - The things advisors should take into account when working with women investors. [33:37] - How traditional male-female partnerships work to make important financial decisions. [36:18] - The impact of the pandemic on women's financial and investment goals. [41:17] -  Strategies to attract more women to careers in investment and financial advice. Quotes [18:34] - "When you have an affluent woman taking over financial decisions in her household, she typically is going to be seeking out a new wealth management relationship to better suit her needs. We currently have a gap in advice when it comes to how we connect with women and we need to close that gap." - Brie Williams [35:34] - "When you can talk about money productively as a couple and truly work together as a team, then you can have a better handle on owning your own worth, owning your family's worth, and are in a much better position to tackle the curveball when life throws it to you." - Brie Williams Links  Brie Williams on LinkedIn Lizzo The Beatles Girl on Fire Southern Methodist University Emerson College Frito-Lay McDonald's Corporation SPDR Exchange Traded Funds State Street Corporation Arnold Worldwide Putnam Investments Money Smart Resources Women's Worth: Finding  Your Financial Confidence Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties The Business of Family: How to Stay Rich for Generations Practice Made (More) Perfect Connect with our hosts Rusty Vanneman Robyn Murray Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts 3106-OPS-12/14/2021

New setting, new routine, on the edge of adulthood, maybe trying to figure out how you feel about the cute boy who was flirting with you at a party. It's even tougher when you're a citizen of Night Vale who happens to be a teenage shape-shifter, and you turned into the most embarrassing, unwieldy shape you can imagine in your sleep. AND NOW YOU'RE STUCK. Join the twins on their recap of a surprisingly sweet short-story episode of Welcome To Night Vale that can be interpreted in several different ways. This week's podcast is also a spoiler-free study of endings, namely the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion (seriously, Japan, what the hell?), the ending of Game of Thrones (okay, we can see where things went off track) and the ending of the last season of Dexter (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) This week's outro music is a clip from Lightstream by Siddhartha http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Siddhartha/2019072480724742/Siddhartha_-_Constellations_-_05_Lightstream# Elizabeth's interview with Transformers writer John Bleszinski can be found here. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/08/sdcc-2019-interview-with-tyler-bleszinski-of-transformers-galaxies/ Correction: We probably should have looked up Brie Williams and her previous writing credits, because it turns out that in addition to this episode, she also wrote for several other Night Vale episodes, including one of our favorites, Episode 101 Guidelines for Disposal. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/02/binary-system-podcast-69-wtnv-101-guidelines-for-disposal/

On the exact 6-month anniversary of San Francisco's shelter-in-place ordnance, UCSF infectious disease experts look back at what we've learned about the strengths and weaknesses of our public health systems and look forward to the next stage of the fight against COVID-19. Panelists will discuss how the pandemic has taken advantage of inequities in our society to continue spreading despite the region's early response—and the growing understanding that stemming the tide of COVID-19 will require much greater support for low-income essential workers, incarcerated populations, and others least able to protect themselves. They will explore how partnerships between community leaders, UCSF scientists, and public health officials are pointing the way forward to a more just, equitable and effective response to the pandemic. Meet the panelists: Joe DeRisi, Ph.D., is Tomkins Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at UCSF and co-director of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, an independent research institute dedicated to eradicating disease. DeRisi has a long history as a “virus detective” and inventor. During the severe testing backlog at the start of the pandemic, his team built a state-of-the-art COVID-19 testing center in 8 days, which soon became the hub for processing test kits from public health departments across the state. Diane Havlir, M.D., is chief of the UCSF Division of HIV, Infectious Disease and Global Medicine. At the start of the pandemic, Havlir—who is a veteran of the fight against AIDS—joined forces with Latinx community leaders such as Jon Jacobo of the Latino Task Force for COVID-19, to document inequalities in the pandemic's impact on low-income workers and their families, and to link those infected with the support they need to go into isolation. This “test-to-care” approach has become a model for similar efforts across the country. Jon Jacobo, of the Latino Task Force for COVID-19, helped spearhead the group's partnership with UCSF, called Unidos En Salud, and has worked for policy changes to support low-income essential workers during the pandemic, in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco Department of Public Health. Jacobo is director of engagement and policy for TODCO Group, a San Francisco affordable housing and advocacy nonprofit, and an appointed commissioner overseeing the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection. Brie Williams, M.D., M.S., is a professor in the UCSF Division of Geriatrics and founding director of UCSF Amend, an initiative dedicated to transforming correctional culture to improve the health of people living and working in America's prisons. Her research has pushed for changes in how California's prisons have handled outbreaks during the pandemic, not only to protect prisoners and prison workers, but to prevent spill-over into the community at large. Moderator Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Ph.D., M.D., M.A.S., is vice dean for population health and health equity at the UCSF School of Medicine and director of the UCSF COVID-19 Community Public Health Initiative. She has written about how the pandemic has created “two Californias”—those with the privilege of sheltering in place, and the low-income workers who have been forced to choose between keeping food on the table and protecting their families from the virus In association with UCSF Learn more about your ad choices. GeriPal - A Geriatrics and Palliative Care Podcast

Eight of the 10 largest outbreaks in the US have been in correctional facilities. Physical distancing is impossible in prisons and jails - they're not built for it. Walkways 3 feet wide. Bunk beds where you can feel your neighbor's breath. To compound the issue, prisoners are afraid that if they admit they're sick they will be "put in the hole" (solitary confinement). So they don't admit when they're sick. Many people think of prisons as disconnected from society. Like a cruise ship. "It's happening between those walls, behind the barbed wire, not out here." But for every two people in a correctional facility there's about 1 person who works in the correctional facility and lives in the community. The workers are bringing whatever they've been exposed to in prison out into the community, and bringing whatever they've been exposed to in the community into the prisons. This is a national problem, not a prison or a jail problem. We learned about these critical issues in our podcast with Brie Williams, Professor of Medicine in the UCSF Division of Geriatrics and Director of Amend (https://amend.us/), a program to change correctional culture; Adnan Khan, Executive Director of Re:store Justice (https://restorecal.org/), a justice advocacy organization; and Eric Maserati-E Abercrombie, a singer/songwriter and filmmaker through First Watch (https://restorecal.org/firstwatch/), a media project of currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers. Adnan and Eric Maserati-E are former inmates of San Quentin prison. What can we do about this? The major response should be decarceration. Reduce the crowding in our overcrowded correctional facilities. If prisoners have less than a year left, let them out. If they have a long sentence and are low risk to society, and a place to go, let them go home with an ankle bracelet and return later to complete their sentence. Brie reminds us that people in prison can make an advance care plan, they can sign an advance directive, they have the right to engage in goals of care decisions, and a right to elect someone to be their health care proxy. And everybody, including prisoners, has a right to say goodbye to their loved one, though it may be by phone or video. We learn about these and other critical steps we need to take as a society and as hospice and palliative care clinicians. Eric Maserati-E does the music for this one. He needs to be discovered! If you know someone in the music industry, make them listen to him. Check out and subscribe to Eric's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZN4YxjDR41RL_xIlDysU8Q). Also, listen to this terrific podcast, Ear Hustle (https://www.earhustlesq.com/), produced from inside San Quentin, the latest episode featuring Eric's music. -@AlexSmithMD

Here is our video link: https://youtu.be/xQT6xK4QjRw - This one is probably better watched as a video than as a podcast, though either will work. At GeriPal, we are happy to do what we can to support, inform, and entertain those working hard on the front lines, whether it be in New York, Detroit, Seattle, New Orleans, Indiana, Chicago, or wherever you may be. Special guests from UCSF include: Rebecca Sudore, Steve Pantilat, Pei Chen, Natalie Young, Louise Walter, Brie Williams, Anne Fabiny, Ken Covinsky, and Sandra Moody. -@AlexSmithMD

When many people build their financial plans, they only envision an ideal retirement where nothing goes wrong. They assume they're going to live long, happy, healthy lives, that nothing's ever going to get in their way, and that the future is going to go exactly to plan. Unfortunately, this rarely proves to be the case - and retirement plans built on this fantasy often don't address countless “what if” scenarios that could negatively impact retirement. Assisted healthcare and long-term care, beyond insurance, can cost well over $250,000 a year. Today, in the second part of a three-part series, we ask the toughest “what if” questions. We get into the threats that derail and destroy retirement plans, the tough conversations we need to have with family members and financial planners before anything happens, and how having a great financial plan in place can have a massively positive impact on everyone's quality of life.   Get Today's Show Notes To get a full recap of today's conversation, including the biggest takeaways, transcripts, and links to all the resources mentioned, visit GuidedRetirementShow.com/4   Learn More about Retirement Planning Find out more about retirement planning and Barber Financial Group, by visiting BarberFinancialGroup.com

Why do we do what we do? What motivates us? These are big questions - and they apply just as much to financial services as they do everything else in our lives. Brie Williams, the Vice President of State Street Global Advisors, has dedicated her career to helping financial advisory firms facilitate efficiency and growth beyond asset management. She's passionate about helping people achieve better outcomes. Today, in the first part of a three-part series, she joins the podcast to talk about the psychology underneath behavioral finance, the effects of cognitive decisions as we age, what you should expect from an advisor relationship, when it's appropriate to discuss investments, and how to evaluate the value of an advisor and their fees.   Get Today's Show Notes To get a full recap of today's conversation, including the biggest takeaways, transcripts, and links to all the resources mentioned, visit GuidedRetirementShow.com/3   Learn More about Retirement Planning Find out more about retirement planning and Barber Financial Group, by visiting BarberFinancialGroup.com

You don't have to read stories about people like Alan Stanford and Bernie Madoff or The Wolf of Wall Street to learn about scams and abuses in the financial services industry. In fact, fraud and abuse often hits much closer to home, and the growing senior population all over the world gets more likely to be taken advantage of with every passing year. Over $3 billion is reported as lost to scammers, fraud, and financial abuse each year, but the actual number is likely much, much higher. Today, in the third part of a three-part series, Brie and I talk through the 10 most common financial scams taking advantage of people over the age of 65. However, people all over the world well under retirement age often fall victim to these scams as well, which include medical fraud, credit fraud, and identity theft. If you want to stay protected, today's episode is a must-listen.   Get Today's Show Notes To get a full recap of today's conversation, including the biggest takeaways, transcripts, and links to all the resources mentioned, visit GuidedRetirementShow.com/5   Learn More about Retirement Planning Find out more about retirement planning and Barber Financial Group, by visiting BarberFinancialGroup.com

How can financial advisors build an enduring business with sustainable value? Contrary to what we often hear and read, it's not all about tech. It's about being indispensable in your clients' lives. Today's guest, Brie Williams, says there are four areas we should focus on to create sustainable value. Be authentic to what you represent. Set, manage, and deliver on client expectations. Remember that perception is reality. Optimize to realize your long-term vision. These four areas can form the core of your client-centric approach to business. Brie is Vice President of State Street Global Advisors and Head of Practice Management for the Global SPDR Business. Before she entered financial services, Brie had a great career in advertising and research where she managed big brands like Frito-Lay, McDonald's, and Target. In our conversation, we explored some of the key drivers you need to put in place to build a sustainable business in our fast-paced world. In particular, Brie talked about the lessons she learned on Madison Ave. that have translated into helping advisors build better practices, and how you can use technology combined with human empathy and curiosity to help clients understand how to engage with you and your team when their money needs and life needs intersect.

The number of older prisoners in prison populations is growing in many countries, in part due to ageing populations and often in part to punitive sentencing policies. However, older prisoners are more likely than their peers in the community to be disabled, to have multiple, costly chronic health conditions, and experience age-related cognitive impairment including dementia, presenting new and pressing challenges to the delivery of healthcare in prison systems. In the tenth expert blog in our anniversary series, Cyrus Ahalt and Brie Williams, Directors of the Community Ageing Health Project at the University of California, San Francisco, discuss the implications of the growing number of older prisoners for health-related policy and practice across criminal justice systems from arrest to reintegration, and argue that policy-oriented research is urgently needed to address the needs of this vulnerable group.
