In this video, How to Heal Your Lungs & Recover Your Vitality, I'm sharing my personal journey using herbs to heal my lungs after battling pneumonia. Working alongside pharmaceutical medicines, I relied on a range of supportive herbs—like Mullein, Peppermint, Lungwort, Yarrow, Bee Balm, Cinnamon, and Licorice—to soothe and strengthen my respiratory system. I'll walk you through which herbs helped, which didn't work as well, and what I would approach differently if I had to go through it again. I'll also dive into an often-overlooked but essential aspect of healing: convalescence. This practice, rooted in Ancient Greek medicine, is all about allowing the body the time and care it needs for true recovery. In today's world, we tend to rush through recovery, but focusing on convalescence can make a real difference in regaining long-term health and vitality. Whether you're recovering from a respiratory illness or just looking to strengthen your lungs, I hope these insights and tips help you on your healing journey. ———— Herbal Lung Recipe Ingredients: 1 tbsp Yarrow 3 tbsp Bee Balm or Oregano 1 tbsp Peppermint or Spearmint 1 tbsp Marshmallow Root 1 Mullein Leaf (approx 2 tbsp) 1 tbsp Lungwort 2 tsp Cinnamon chips 1 tsp Licorice root ———— Directions: Add herbs to a teapot with a strainer or a saucepan. Add 2 cups of hot water and let steep for 10 - 15 minutes. Strain and drink to restore lung health and vitality. ———— Where to Buy Herbs https://mountainroseherbs.com/ https://oshalafarm.com/ https://www.herbalist-alchemist.com/ ———— Other Convalescent Tips Take Hot Baths Self-Massage with Herbal Oils Eat Warm Easy to Digest Foods like Soups Make Art Take Naps Journal Your Dreams Move Slowly Stay Quiet

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Operation Independence What is the emergency fund for and what do you do after using it? Main topic of the Show: What is Next for LFTN It happened again. We turned a corner at the LFTN workshop. I kicked off the event with what was supposed to be a talk about using the #my3things method to move forward in life. But guys, I was BEAT. Like more beat that I have ever been. When I stepped in front of everyone to talk I saw much of the same fatigue on so many faces that I stopped focusing on the prepared notes and started a conversation.  By then end of our conversation I realized something: You are no good to anyone if you put yourself in the hospital. Period.  We have spent years helping people stuck in the throes of analysis paralysis just get started and then refine. We have spent  years helping people who are having motivation problems, maybe a little depression or other things that keep them from persevering. We have talked about all the ways you can look at an impossible list, set a really big goal, then go for it and keep going every. Single. Day.  We have even talked about adding your personal health, relationships, and other really important things to your daily goals so that you build a happy life. Why?  Because the problem most of us face as we begin our walk toward independence is not what other people think about us. It isn;t if a spouse is on board or not. It isnt even about squeezing that last nickel out of your day to finally put aside toward something better.  It is the broken promises to ourselves that must change. We tell ourselves stories like: I will eat on plan, or I will do this thing by that time. Or I will by GUM conquer laundry mountain tomorrow. Always tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes and it is so tempting to just not do what we set out to do even if we KNOW we feel better if we prioritize what we already promised ourselves (and sometimes others) we would do. The pressure of the urgent will overpower the prioritization of the urgent if you let it. And that is what you were programmed to do. Programmed by the bell at school. By asking for bathroom breaks. By seeking permission. Yes a corner was turned at the spring workshop, as it usually is. LFTN has grown as a community. In fact, someone told me they wished they had a term for the Greater TSP/LFTN/SOE/DELINQUENTS community because we all overlap and we all share core values. I just call it The Community if that helps. That way when another community of doers appears, we dont have to rebrand. The Community as in the Real Community - not a fake one that has been thrust upon us by outside forces but a group of people we can work with. Who understand the difference between friendly competition and toxic competition. Who DO instead of take. Yes, LFTN has brown beyond the timid little group of women who decided to step outside expectations and start doing what people told us we couldn't or shouldn't do. We've grown as mentors, and leaders, and as supporters.  I've come to see that homesteads dont do well without women and that many of the best in this space will never be seen because they think that their “small” work on the homestead is nothing. But they are the heart and sole of the homesteading network. And that is how this homesteading podcast started. It started because I was doing things on my homestead that men are supposed to do and laughing with another friend of mine about how we would have to adjust our approach based on such things as: oversized (for us) tools. Center of gravity differences on big projects. Not having grown up building things and not knowing what we don't know. In the case of my friend, her husband works full time and she takes care of the livestock and simply can't always wait for a helping hand. In my case, I was both earning the income and needing to get infrastructure and processes in place to live what I knew would be in better concert with nature, producing food and peace from this small piece of land. And here I am a decade later, helping to bring more people into our Community. Connecting folks with the skills they need to start their own homesteads. Like processing chickens or canning. But the advice has not changed much. If we want something better, we have to figure out how to make that happen for ourselves. We have to move forward no matter what. We have to stop breaking the most important promises we have made to ourselves and just do it. But because we have grown as a community, we have changed too. No longer is the primary demon inaction. No no no. It turns out that overaction is a bigger problem for us now that we have surrounded ourselves with doers. There is always more we can do and we need a new skill: choosing to do the things that are most important. That move ourselves and our families forward. Whether your family be biological or chosen. Most of you missed my talk at LFTN24. Members, you will get it in the portal in about a month. We talked about having three areas of focus to move me toward my personal vision: Health, Wealth, Community. Three. Wealth is the thing that most of us hesitate to start building. It is the reason my advice is usually to get off your ass and try. But you have all grown beyond that. And so have I. Now it is time to get back on your ass and prioritize your three most important things. For me, my health has suffered as a result of delivering on my q1 and q2 promises. That is why I took last week all the way off.  While catching up on home and homestead tasks, it was clear we had turned a very important corner. We have grown to where more action does not build more health, wealth, and community. Focusing more effort on fewer things does. Building back time to keep the promises we make to ourselves (I'm looking at you my “quit smokers” and “more workouts” people) in service of our long-term life vision is important. Becoming more ruthless about what you might catch from investing time in something - like the news or a toxic relationship - is important. In short, when we started 8 years ago, we were like a tomato seedling pushing through the soil and putting on leaves. Our flourishing and future depend on pruning to allow for airflow and so we can focus our resources on the most important vines. What does this mean for LFTN: We are still here and will go back to three shows (and maybe 2 in the future) a week. I will not be speaking at events so much because the cost of being gone from the homestead and from all of you is higher than most speaker fees. In short, we are honing in on the things that bring true prosperity and happiness. I hope you will enjoy this journey with me - how are you honing in on better ways to bring your homesteading journey to what you want it to be?   Make it a great week!   Song:   GUYS! Today's episode is my third interview with jim mcdonald and it's brimming with soooo much information about the health benefits of mullein (Verbascum spp). And who am I to deny him (or you, for that matter!) that opportunity? So grab your cup of tea, get cozy and bring your notepad and pencil because there's a lot of mullein goodness packed into this episode! And don't miss downloading the mullein handout jim prepared just for you; you can find it at https://bit.ly/3I1sIvT.Why should anyone care about this weed? Well, to get started, here are a few occasions when you might reach for mullein:► When you have a cough… especially a specific kind of cough; listen in to get the details► If you're dealing with stress incontinence… jim shares which part of the mullein plant can be especially helpful► When you need a relaxing nervine… but it doesn't work this way for everyone, so listen in to hear who's most likely to be helped by mulleinBy the end of this episode, you'll know:► Several hints for working with mullein smoke (including as a possible aid to quit smoking tobacco)► The species to grow if you want to harvest mullein flowers (and why you can pick them all without fear that you're overharvesting)► A toxic look-alike to be aware of before wildcrafting for mullein► Tips for increasing the shelf life of mullein infused oil► How mullein can amplify the effectiveness of other therapies for certain types of pain► and so much more…For those of you who don't already know him, jim mcdonald is an herbalist in southeast Michigan (that cool state that looks like a mitten you can see from space) where he teaches, sees clients, wildharvests, and concocts a plethora of diverse herbal formulas. His approach to herbalism blends European folk influences mixed up with a bit of 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he tries to spice up with a bit of humor and discretionary irreverence so as not to appear to be too serious about life. jim hosts the websites www.herbcraft.org and herbcraft.podia.com which list his offerings and convey his thoughts of plants and herbalism. (And if you've ever wondered, the lack of capitalization is because the dots over the "j" and the "i" just look super cool together). If you'd like to hear more from jim, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for his website and social media channels. We have just three episodes remaining in our Herbs A-Z series! Today's show features mullein and blue vervain.Verbascum thapsus, mullein, deserves its reputation as an effective remedy for dry respiratory conditions. Its leaf is a great ally when your home heating system dries out the air inside, or when your area is hit by wildfire smoke. But mullein leaf isn't a systemically moistening herb – its effects outside the respiratory system are drying, through better distribution of fluids. Also, mullein root and flower are each different from the leaf – root is even more astringent & tonifying, while the leaf is a more mucilaginous demulcent. Categories like “moistening” and “drying” bear close investigation and nuanced exploration – mullein teaches us this lesson.Verbena hastata, blue vervain, is an excellent nervine when you want to release tension without losing all structure. It helps us to receive & transform, whether that's food or information or experiences. As one of our bitter nervines – a very important affinity group of medicinal plants – vervain is an excellent companion to motherwort, mugwort, st john's wort, yarrow, angelica, feverfew, betony, skullcap, and the like. These herbs call forward the strong interconnection of our digestive & nervous systems, and remind us that mental discomforts are as much in need of relief as physical ones. That includes during acute illness, and that's why vervain always gets included in our homemade Winter Elixir. Try it in yours this year!If you live in the northern hemisphere, cold & flu season is in full swing! And no matter where you live, it's good to have the knowledge and skills you need to take care of these common problems at home. Herbal Remedies for Cold & Flu teaches you everything you need to know to conquer a cold or fight off the flu. We teach you how to work with herbs that are safe and effective for all aspects of the illness. These strategies can also be very effective when coping with COVID, RSV, and other respiratory infections, too! Our focus is on finding ways to support what your body is already trying to do as it works to restore balance.Like all our offerings, these are self-paced online video courses, which come with lifetime access to current & future course material, twice-weekly live Q&A sessions with us, open discussion threads integrated in each lesson, an active student community, study guides, quizzes & capstone assignments, and more!If you enjoyed the episode, it helps us a lot if you subscribe, rate, & review our podcast wherever you listen. Parnassus Records presents its latest release in the “Black Swans” series, returning to international availability a pioneering recording of Schubert's best-known song cycles, Die schöne Mullein and Winterreise, sung by American soprano Inez Matthews accompanied by Lowell Farr. The recordings were briefly available as a two-LP-plus-EP set in the mid-1950s and are one of only a few recordings made by Matthews and had become one of the most elusive vocal collectors' items of the early LP era. The recordings, newly restored and remastered, reveal an artist with an exceptionally beautiful voice and stunning diction, bringing vitality and insight to Schubert's dramatic and demanding songs.1-20 Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin, Op. 25, D. 79521-44 Schubert: Winterreise, D. 911Help support our show by purchasing this album  at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber and Apple Classical. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcast with the permission of Sean Dacy from Rosebrook Media.

We had a few heat waves this summer, so I had plenty of opportunities to try out herbs and foods to stay cool! I made cold infusions instead of hot teas with cooling and moistening herbs like Hibiscus and Rose, and switched my regular body massage oil to cooling coconut oil. Ayurveda gives us lots of insights into the energetic qualities of herbs, and this includes how foods and herbs affect our body temperature. I will review a list of dietary recommendations for Pitta, because as we know Pitta is hot and wet, so this can give us some ideas about how to adapt our diet and herbal protocol during summer (Pitta time!). I will also mention some herbs for the lungs that are helpful if you have been close to a wildfire. In this case, we can combine cooling and demulcent herbs with lung tonics and expectorants. How to Harness the Messages & Metaphors of Mother Earth

The messages & healing we most need will never stop trying to be delivered to us. Discussed in this potent interview with herbalist & author, Asia Suler, is how to cultivate our finding & receiving of these messages all around us which connect us back to both ourselves, our Source and our ancestral wisdom. Also unpacked is the power of metaphor that is not only a helpful language for articulating metaphysical experiences but also the way flowers & plants communicate their healing properties. How to connect with nature in urban settings, the Celtic notion of “the Other World” and the hidden power in our name are also delved into.  Show Notes: To be a Modern Mystic is to be in a relationship with the beloved qualities of the mystery itself and not just focusing on the “answers.” Embarking on this journey in the Modern Age is not a block but just an invitation to the next level encounter of the mystery to fall in love with.  Discussed is the term Animism, the viewpoint  that all creatures, plants, trees, flowers, rocks, rivers, weather systems possess a distinct aliveness and spiritual essence.  Kids don't see plants as any different than a person; however, we lose this natural ability to see we are one living being in a collection of living beings that make up a living world through enculturation. The messages & healing we most need will never stop trying to be delivered to us. Sometimes that can look like hardship and crisis but always underneath healing wants to be delivered.  Intellectualism and spiritualism don't have to be antagonists but can be viewed as two sides of one coin. We can blend these two arenas and through intellectualism, we can access spirituality. The concept of our “Wider Self'' is discussed, and the idea that there is no divorcing Self from what you are a part of which is nature . You are a part of nature's dream made manifest in this body in this lifetime and so there is always the opportunity to reach out to nature and have a conversation. Nature is a parent mirror that never forsakes us. A parent ideally mirrors their child: their goodness etc... We are missing the primary connection with the parent mirror of nature often in our Modern Day Age. You don't have to do anything special for nature to speak with you because we promise you nature already is doing so. Find a “gatekeeper” in an environment: a sentinel tree, stone, waterway and notice the feeling of sitting with an elder. Introduce yourself for that's a basic building block for building a relationship. You might feel silly which tells you that you are on the right track as silliness is looking around and seeing what's normally done, and then turning a cultural norm on its head. Our sharing of where we are from and what we care about trains our brain to recognize various aspects of nature as living sentient beings. Create a practice of sitting consistently with this gatekeeper to create a relationship which at times can lead to an almost psychedelic perceptionship. Metaphoric thinking is discussed and is an ancestral skill as there is only so much you can learn from literal thinking. Metaphoric thinking helps more synapses and connections to be made in your brain as metaphor connects one thing to another. Metaphor is a bridge because spiritual truths can't be expressed literally so metaphor supports how we gather, store and transmit knowledge to convey spiritual truths.  In western herbalism there is a doctrine of signatures, a story of a plant's lifetime that will tell you about its medicine. i.e. Mullein which grows around the highway. This plant clears our lungs of pollution. Sometimes a plant offers a non-literal/metaphorical story of how it is growing and communicating to you which might be on a physical level or on an energetic level. Many of us have had the experience of being uplifted by smelling a flower and it shifts you! Flowers and plants have broad spectrum multi dimensional healing powers to them. All you have to do is step outside and look around. Their messages you need are trying to come to you, just often in very creative ways and so it's up to us to pay attention to them. The message you most need will never stop being delivered. Step outside and look around as answers and messages ARE being communicated to you, just put a creative cap on to see and receive them.  When we work with plants as medicine, we are inviting emotional and spiritual healing in. Plants are our elders, those who came before us who made our lives possible, thus connecting to plants is connecting to one's ancestry. Without plants, humans wouldn't exist on the planet. They connect us back to our Source. Plants are conduits that help us develop a deep relationship with the soul of this planet.  We came here to learn and to grow ourselves and on earth's life path. That's our mission.  Everything that manifests in the way of mental or physical illness appears so we can remember the WHY. Why we came here and why we are earthlings to begin with. Plants help us get to the heart of remembering and then the need for major crisis diminishes. They are a support structure, we can lean into… The bedrock belief of the pan-Celtic tradition is that physicality itself is a gateway to interacting with the other world and not divorced from spirituality. Being on earth is just the other side of the coin or veil. These 2 worlds are intertwined and run parallel to each other and the “other world” is actually larger. The “other world” is a place where our ancestors as well as spirits live. The Irish ancestors had these incredible philosophical traditions and we can draw upon them for strength which can be refreshing to be among the continuance of such a belief system. These beliefs are not “far out there”, they are here in our transitions, our earth and our ancestry. They are there and ready for us to access.  The power of language and the magic of one's name are discussed. Our names hold some gems of wisdom and metaphoric thinking for you for language holds frequency. ✨HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!: The doors for the Modern Mystic Membership are now open! Healing The Spirit: Astrology, Archetypes & Artmaking
10. Love Notes to Capricorn with Mallory Dowd

In today's episode, I had a conversation with my friend Mallory Dowd. Mallory and I discussed the archetype of Capricorn - which we both feel can be quite misunderstood, or perhaps is up for a re-thinking, re-visioning, re-defining. We spoke to how Capricorn can be understood beyond the confines of our patriarchal, colonial, capitalistic framework as The Artist, The Mystic, The Ritualist, The Crone. Mallory also shared her beautiful love notes to Capricorn, some thoughts around how to work with the Capricorn energy when we feel like there's too much of it in our system, and how Capricorn is personally meaningful to her when seen through the lens of her lineage. As Virgo risings, Mallory and I both have Capricorn ruling the 5th house of joy, creativity, pleasure, and self-expression in our birth charts. This conversation serves both as a devotional prayer and a critical study of Capricorn through the lens of our lived experiences and the infinite possibilities this archetype holds. Here's Mallory's bio: Mallory Dowd is a tarot reader, artist, teacher, theatre-maker, storyteller, and mystic. She has been holding space for over 15 years in varying roles as a clinical case manager, domestic violence advocate, support group facilitator, teacher, and tarot reader. As an artist, Mallory aims to enchant and awaken, casting spells with her words and urgently embodying the gifts of creativity, imagination, and play. As a reader, she holds warm and compassionate space in which to embrace the energies and invitations that linger on the edges of awareness, desire, and change. She currently resides in Seoul, South Korea.Connect with Mallory through her website and her Instagram @mallorydowd - where you can check out her blackout poetry and her profound musings on the tarot. Mallory offers both live and recorded readings, and I highly recommend you check out her very potent offerings.
