301: Justice, Love and Facilitating Organizational Healing

Finding Brave

What does it take to create lasting change in an organization that is rooted in dignity, justice, and care? Too often, leadership and consulting focus on quick fixes instead of investing in deeper and necessary cultural shifts. Today, we explore how organizations can foster true transformation by embracing a more holistic approach and prioritizing what truly matters. Our guest, Ora Grodsky, is a mission-driven consultant and author of the new book Justice, Love, and Organizational Healing. With over 25 years of experience, she helps social justice organizations repair harm, strengthen leadership, and align with their values. Drawing from a unique background in acupuncture, nonprofit management, and organizational development, Ora brings a holistic, human-centered approach to change. In today's eye-opening conversation, Ora breaks down her approach to transformational consulting. She sees organizations as living systems where true change requires healing, connection, and cultural awareness. Quoting the Talmud, she reminds us: “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” This belief guides her work, helping organizations move beyond surface-level fixes to deep, justice-driven transformation. She also explains how dominant cultural forces, including white supremacy, shape workplace dynamics and decision-making, before unpacking how organizations can begin to address and heal from these damaging patterns. By aligning values with action, she helps leaders create workplaces that don't just function but truly embody justice and care. Tune in for her powerful insights on how to build lasting, meaningful change together!   Key Points From This Episode: Ora's unique background ranging from acupuncture to nonprofit management. [02:40] Insights from a profound quote in the Talmud included Ora's book. [06:38] Ways that Ora's background in acupuncture has shaped how she consults. [11:51] The three different types of consulting and the details of transformational consulting. [15:01] How Ora chooses which organizations to partner with: shared values and goals. [18:43] Types of organizations that Ora typically works with and the issues she addresses. [22:00] Where to start in the process of undertaking organizational change. [23:53] The hardest, most intractable problems Ora has come up against. [27:53] Recognizing how the culture of white supremacy has shaped organizational cultures. [31:12] Ora's holistic understanding of systems, how it differentiates her as a consultant, and the top thing she wants listeners to take from her book. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” — Ora Grodsky [0:06:40] “That's how I see transformational consulting: [it means] creating spaces within which people can have the kind of process where they deeply connect to self, deeply connect to each other, and see a wider view of the system that they're in and how we got here.” — Ora Grodsky [0:16:51] “Only looking at the single bottom line of ‘Where's profit?' is what has gotten us to the verge of potential extinction with climate disaster; because we're looking for cheaper and faster. As long as we're [always] looking for cheaper and faster – we are not going to be here for too long.” — Ora Grodsky [0:19:26] “I believe in working with people at all levels of an organization, but I do believe, as the crass saying goes, a fish rots from the head.” — Ora Grodsky [0:24:19] “Urgency is really often something that comes with an attitude of dominance and subjugation, which I think is the root of white supremacy – the idea that some people deserve to ‘have' and deserve resources and deserve to be human, and some people don't.” — Ora Grodsky [0:28:36] “That dominance and subjugation ideology [at] the root of white supremacy is [often] what drives urgency: ‘We need to be better. We need to accumulate more. We need to do better, faster.' There's so much pressure – for everyone, that letting go of that urgency is really hard.” — Ora Grodsky [0:28:55]   Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 282: Power Gap #7: Allowing Past Pain and Challenge To Continue to Shape You
(Part of Kathy's series The Most Powerful You)

Finding Brave

Play Episode Listen Later May 2, 2024 36:10

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers!   Please note: This is a special rerun of Episode 130. “You are not your past. You are all of it, your past, present, and future. So do the work to release the shame, the humiliation, and the negative judgments you have about yourself. Release yourself.” – Kathy Caprino Over the past several years on Finding Brave, I've offered some key information about what I've observed are the 7 most damaging power and confidence gaps along with key chapters from my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. Some time back, I offered a series of 7 podcasts dedicated to these gaps that negatively impact 98% of professional women today, and 90% of men, preventing them from reaching their highest potential, and their happiest, most rewarding success and fulfillment. In this 7th installment of that series, I share the power gap that may be closest to my own heart and soul. I'm talking about how we unwittingly allow past trauma, pain and challenges that we've experienced to continue to shape and define us. And this unwanted pain and shame often brings to our lives unwanted experiences. I have lived this in such a deep way (and continue to work on it - as you'll hear in my upcoming interview, Episode #286 with Finnian Kelly - who helped me right on the show uncover a very painful trauma memory from when I was a teen, and connect that to some mindset (and behavioral) challenges I still have around money, work and safety. I never fully recognized this Power Gap (of how our past continues to shape and define us unless we gain fuller awareness of the trauma and pain events/experiences and work committedly to overcome and release them) until I became a therapist and started doing the work on myself and with others to help us heal. Unfortunately, life can hurt us badly sometimes and leave deep scars, and no one is immune. Every single one of us has experienced some form of pain, suffering, sadness, isolation, rejection, and trauma in our lifetimes. Many have experienced and witnessed things that alter how they see the world and operate within it. Sometimes, pain and hardship make us close down and stop trusting others. Other times, it makes us turn our pain into rage and violence against the world. Yet some people, while crushed by their pain for a time, are able to find a way to become more of who they really are at their core – more loving, compassionate, hopeful, helpful, generous, insightful, brave, committed, and resilient and joy-filled  — through all of it. And some are fortunate to know exactly how to turn their emotional challenges into new ways to be of service in the world so they can uplift others while expanding themselves. I sincerely hope that my “The Most Powerful You” series (for content on the other 6 gaps, check out Episodes #124 through #129) is enlightening, and in conjunction with my book and video training program, can help you uncover any power and confidence gaps that may be holding you back at this very moment. As always, thank you for listening and I would be so happy to hear your feedback on not just this episode, but the entire series and The Most Powerful You book. Remember that tremendous success, joy, and reward aren't just reserved for a handful of people, but everyone, including you. You are worthy of an amazing life and career, and it's waiting for you. 266: The Sexy Lie: How Self-Objectification Damages Women's Lives

Finding Brave

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2023 49:13

As our reality becomes more entwined with social media, an ever-increasing number of girls and women are engaging in self-objectification. And while gaining money, resources and agency may seem empowering, there are hidden impacts to this behavior that can have far-reaching consequences for women, girls, and our society as a whole. Today's guest, Dr. Caroline Heldman, describes this phenomenon as ‘the sexy lie' and outlines it in her new book The Sexy Lie: The War on Women's Bodies and How to Fight Back. Dr. Heldman has spent the bulk of her career engaging in issues around gender and social justice. She has published seven books on gender justice and politics and is a professor of Critical Theory & Social Justice at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in numerous documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. She is also the  Executive Director of The Representation Project, a political commentator for Spectrum and CNN, and co-founder of the New Orleans Women's Shelter, the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, End Rape on Campus (EROC), Faculty Against Rape (FAR), and led the End Rape Statute of Limitations (ERSOL) that successfully abolished the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. In today's conversation with Caroline, we tackle the difficult topic of how women are sexually objectified, the way it's normalized within mainstream culture, and how this makes it virtually impossible for women to achieve full value in society. Caroline provides a comprehensive breakdown of ‘the sexy lie' and how mistaking attention for power has led to the common misconception that self-objectification is empowering before unpacking the profoundly harmful effects of objectification on girls and women. Listeners will also hear her expert insights on the role of capitalism, profit margins, and the patriarchy in women's sexual objectification and the structural changes it will take to alter these entrenched systems of power. Our conversation also explores the insidious impact of objectification culture in the workplace before hearing some much-needed advice on what women can do to fight back against internalizing the sexy lie and how to change society for the better. It's no secret that our culture objectifies women, but by facing it head-on, naming it, and recognizing it for what it is, we can find new ways to ignite change and fight for better outcomes. Caroline is a deeply inspiring guest and I personally learned so much from this conversation.. Be sure to tune in to this today and share it with the men and women you know.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Dr. Caroline Heldman, her definition of “the sexy lie” is, and the harmful effect this has on girls and women.  [01:52] • The overlap of power, influence and impact; why women tend to shun power; and how power is regularly defined in masculine terms. 265: Reaching Top Success in Male-Dominated Fields While Staying True To Yourself, with Manuela Nicolosi

Finding Brave

If there's one person who is intimately familiar with what it means to be a woman making her way in a male-dominated field, it's today's guest, Manuela Nicolosi, an Italian international soccer referee, speaker, and entrepreneur. Manuela is an undeniable trailblazer and has a series of barrier-breaking accomplishments to her name. Not only is she the first woman to referee a Men's European Final (the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019), but she is also the first Italian woman to referee the final of the Women's World Cup. In today's conversation with Manuela, we talk about her journey as a soccer referee, her love of the game, and the challenges she's faced while navigating a field dominated by men. We learn about the strict rules that governed Italian soccer when she was growing up, how this prevented women from becoming referees, and the change in regulation that took place when she was only 15, opening up new opportunities for women. Not only did this allow her to pursue her huge dream of making a name for herself in soccer, but it paved the way for her to inspire other young women to do the same through her work as a public speaker. Tuning in you'll learn about many of the skills you need to master as a top-level referee, such as being able to make quick decisions under pressure and remaining calm and balanced when players and fans are (sometimes aggressively and angrilly) challenging your decisions. We then go on to examine how these skills can translate to other leadership positions and why learning to accept your mistakes and take them in stride is such a game-changer. Today's episode is deeply inspiring and a powerful reminder of what it means to follow your dreams, no matter the odds, so be sure to tune in!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Learing about our inspiring guest today: Manuela Nicolosi. [00:21] • Her strong relationship with her father, their shared love of soccer, why he objected to her playing professionally, and how he came to support her dream of refereeing at a high level.  [03:13] • Italy's outdated rule that only men could be referees, and the Federation's decision to open up opportunities to women. [05:41] • The tragic loss of her father when she was 16 years old and her desire to make her father proud through her work. [09:53] • Manuela's experience of being the only woman in a male-dominated field, the challenges she has had to overcome, and how her dedication helped her persevere. [13:56] • What Manuela has learned about how to remain focused when she makes a mistake and what this can teach us about leadership. [19:24] • The resistance and active opposition you face from players and why it's important to remain calm and firm in your decisions. [23:27] • The intense selection process to referee for the World Cup, what it was like for Manuela to referee the Finals, and the tremendous pressure she faced as a woman. [29:12] • The crowd's beautiful reaction to seeing the first ever group of women refereeing a World Cup final. [36:05] • Find out about Manuela's children's book and what she has learned from her work as a speaker. This topic is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, then a marriage and family therapist (focused on systems and communication), a researcher, and in coaching and training thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents these past 16 years. I know too – from working with teams and leaders at organizations both large and small, including startups that are experiencing exponential growth – that many managers and even seasoned leaders fear they simply don't know enough to do their jobs well, Many suffer from imposter syndrome. In short, confidence is a problem that impedes thousands of people's success and fulfillment in life and work. A great leader is able to resiliently and bravely handle core challenges and address key obstacles, all while building a work culture of belonging, safety and trust. And having leaders who demonstrate true empathy has become far more important to employees in today's post-covid world. To explore what empathy in the workplace is today and how leaders must demonstrate it more fully and authentically, is our inspiring guest Raj Sharma from Ernst & Young.  Raj is the Vice Chair at Ernst & Young (EY) Consulting. His 25 years of experience in commercial and financial services has helped him become a global business executive and transformative technology leader, building businesses and executing strategic growth initiatives worldwide. He now leads over 25,000 consultants across the Americas service line. In our conversation, we explore the importance of empathy in leadership by examining EY's recent study on empathy in business. We learn about the most compelling results from the study and what motivated EY to do this research in the first place, how their findings can help other leaders, and what our guest thinks about empathy overall.  Discussing the research findings that over 50% of employees don't see real empathy at work, Raj explains how empathy can lead to innovation and accountability and how you can improve actionable empathy in your own workplace. We discuss his 5 steps for becoming a great leader and what Raj finds most challenging about managing such a large workforce. Finally, we explore the idea that leaders aren't just “born” – there is a great deal of work, commitment and self-mastery required in becoming a highly effective leader and manager. To learn more about empathy and its critical role in sustaining a successful organization, don't miss today's show.    Key Highlights From This Episode: • A note of thanks to our loyal listeners for 500 000 downloads and our top 1.5% ranking! Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! This August, I'm delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today's solo episode originally aired on July 23rd, 2020. Hope you enjoy them! “For those who've sold their soul for money, their professional lives can be extremely painful, crushing and in fact, unsustainable because they've unconsciously chosen to walk away from the exciting dreams for their lives that would bring fulfillment, internal reward and a sense of purpose.” - Kathy Caprino In this episode of Finding Brave I share the audio version of Chapter 6 of my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. This chapter is very close to my heart, as it explores the damaging power gap of losing sight of your thrilling dream for your life, which I've lived through, and it can be a crushing experience. This is something that has not only impacted me, but countless others in the pursuit of “success” and “safety” in their careers and professional lives. Things will happen to each of us that derail our dreams, and often you'll take a direction that you think is right for you, but it ends up being the wrong path. It's a universal experience -- that what we once believed was possible and desirable can change, and we have to change as a result. If you don't want to wake up unhappy years from now, you have to accept this fact and realize that you alone are responsible for how you respond to the life that's before you, and to the challenges and hardships that you've faced. You alone have the power to shape your future, and now is the time to choose your own way in pursuit of the life you want to live and the mark you want to make in the world.

Today is a big day. Kathy Caprino, renowned author, speaker, career, and leadership coach and Sr. Forbes contributor is with me today. Kathy and I have a lot in common when it comes to our innate desire to empower others to be their best self and show up that way every day. That is what we are unpacking today – how to be the most powerful you. I love to discuss shining, but as Kathy accurately points out, before we can shine, we have to break free of the opposite mindset. The opposite of shining is suppression or depression. From a young age, we are taught to suppress. We are raised to be fearful. Whether or not it is well-intended, this crippling mindset will leave our light dimmed and our impact impotent, all out of fear of being embarrassed or losing face. You aren't born with confidence. You gain it by doing the things you don't think you can do. As you live and learn and push beyond your perceived boundaries, your confidence grows. Often, your natural talents – those things you have always been, are the foundation for what will allow you to be fulfilled and add value to other people.  You won't get it on the first try. You have to press beyond the fear of making a mistake sot that you can recognize what makes you happy and adds the most value to others. When you can turn your mess into a message, you will find healing from limiting beliefs and find your center. You can choose who you want to be in the world. Anchor yourself to the core truth you hold dear and know that, while what you do may change, who you are remains true. It sounds simple enough – believe and do better. It takes bravery to step into who you truly are. It takes courage to look openly at what isn't working and be accountable to change it. You have the power to act as an agent of change in your own life and be the author of your own story. Find something every day that restores you and put it on your calendar. Invest in restoration. You are no good to anyone bound by stress. In parting, Kathy has a challenge for you: Right now, for the next ten minutes, take a self-assessment. Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe you are important? And that the world needs you? Now believe it more and ask yourself the following question: “If I truly believe I am important and the world needs me, what will I try next?”. Don't stop until you believe in yourself more than you did when you started. After that, take my power gap survey (listed in the resources below) and start taking practical steps toward living the true you.  Rise. Shine. Impact. Honor who you want to be..
