Through our physician-led initiatives and targeted advocacy, we push for accessible, affordable, and equitable health care. Our programs reflect our commitment to advancing policies that put patients first and safeguard the health and freedom of every family. Nearly 25 years as an emergency medicine physician has provided Dr. Rob Davidson with a wealth of knowledge in practicing health care. Two years ago, however, he decided that he needed more. He began pursuing a Master of Public Health degree in the online Population and Health Sciences program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. “I've always been right at that point of health care where you meet people at significant moments in their life,” said Davidson, a West Michigan-based physician. “The ER seems far removed from the goals of population health and public health, but you come to realize just how much people's wider world has an impact on what brought them to the ER at that point in time.” Davidson pondered earning his master's degree for a while, having seen colleagues who earned their MPH go on to impact local health outcomes. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he knew that pursuing an MPH was the right next step. Michael A. Cohen has been a columnist for the Boston Globe on national politics and foreign affairs since 2014. ✨ Subscribe and review at Apple Podcasts and/or Spotify. Unborn archaeologists thank you!Merry Christmas, Future Fossils! This is Michael Garfield welcoming you to episode 214 of the podcast that explores our place in time — and as demonstrated in the Dr. Who and Aliens franchises, Blade Runner 2049, and Batman Returns, Christmas is a fruitful backdrop for the pondering of big ideas — a moment in which we can see with greater clarity than usual the unity of everyday mundane humanity and transcendental cosmic matters. In other words, perfect timing for this episode's conversation about cybernetics and the philosophy of the weird with Megan Phipps, Phil Ford, and J.F. Martel. Megan studies new media at the University of Amsterdam and writes immensely trippy and insightful papers on topics like Brian Eno, circuit bending, and surveillance capitalism. Phil is an author and musician who teaches musicology at IU Bloomington and infuses his curricula with the profundity he has polished through years of committed Zen practice. J.F. is an author, film-maker, and para-academic online course instructor in media studies and magick, who runs Dungeon and Dragons campaigns on the side. Together, J.F. and Phil host the delicious Weird Studies Podcast, every episode of which triggers in me the Holy Grail of podcast affective listener programming: namely, that I wish I were in the room and part of these discussions. Luckily, I've had that opportunity before, to talk about my writing on the material agency of glass in our scientific era…and both of them have been on Future Fossils also, both alone and together. But getting all four of us on one call is a rare and precious thing — and now's the perfect moment to rap about the emergence of the cybernetic era as a kind of numinous event in human history, a divine invasion that transfigures us and forces us to think about which boundaries *should* melt away and which should stay where evolution learned to put them. You see, we live in an age of multilayer networks — and when our view of humankind transmogrifies from the static image of divine forms to a fluid wash of interweaving processes, the self becomes a metamorphic fugitive and a work of art. When everything's connected, politics is an aesthetic act and art acquires moral force. Advanced technologies have granted us godlike powers to reshape the world in our image…but “life finds a way” and there are always gremlins, aliens, dinosaurs, and elves lurking latent in the tidy systems diagrams. The beauty of progress necessarily conceals the ugly externalities, the entropy exported in our efforts to arrange wild nature into an image of our lost garden. So what does cybernetics as a way of seeing change for us in terms of how we live? What does it mean to be human in an age of very lively, seemingly intelligent machines? But before we dive headlong into this recording of a conversation so good our first attempt was erased by trickster intervention, let me express my thanks to everyone who has helped me and Future Fossils through a year of (what I hope remains) extraordinary challenge. This show is weird and obstinate in its refusal of clear definition. I follow my muses where they lead me and leave these discussions and soliloquys as fossils of a process of discovery and creativity…and staying true to this defies the logic of the market, which would have us classify ourselves as tidily as possible so we are pre-chewed for the algorithms that determine whether what we make is ever noticed by those over the horizon of organic peer-to-peer suggestion networks. If you're listening, chances are a friend told you about this show — I'd be surprised if you just found it randomly, and definitely not because a sponsor amplified it. I started Future Fossils under pressure from my friends but keep it going as a kind of Benedictine prayer. However it might seem, it's lonely work — but every now and then I find I've reached somebody where it counts, that I've inspired a major life change or just helped you orient yourselves amidst the wider movements of a transformation that once seemed chaotic and now seems symphonic. That's why I keep this going. Every single time I check my email to discover someone else finds value in my work and shows appreciation with a Patreon, Substack, or Bandcamp sub, it makes my day and takes a little of the sting away from my ongoing balancing of kids and unemployment. I'd like to make this work sustainable in 2024 but I'm still very far from that…so thank you, each and all, for everything you do to help me run this ultramarathon.New patrons I would like to thank include Ian Benouis, EGH2128, Lynn Amores, Robert Cummings, Katie Teague, Slow Dancing Fool, and Brian Mapes.Thank you! And thank you to EVERYONE who chips in every month, or who has left or will ever leave a good review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, or who shares this show with your friends…and a special thanks to Suzy Lanza of Ahara Rasa Ghee for shipping me a sweet little care package with her delicious ghee as a gesture of appreciation for this show — she's not a sponsor but I do endorse her work and recommend you check out iloveghee.com. Lastly, thanks to Noonautics.org for inviting me to join their advisory board and for their continued support of efforts to explore and map and understand the realms beyond. And now onto the main course! Let's start somewhere else: in the “trash stratum” of a dirty manger, in the mess of our kinship and identity with the nonhuman (animal, vegetable, AND mineral). In the revelation of our contiguous, nested, and modular interbeing — we begin our conversation…guided here by visitations from a higher realm in which communication and control are aspects of some secret third thing that transcends duality. The information age is one in which we cannot separate the bomb from the computer from the drug and in this way, in spite of all the grimy cyberpunk and body horror of our media environment, the trillion-eyed panopticon the Web became appears to us like the archangel Gabriel: “Be not afraid,” dear listeners. A common argument against U.S. troop withdrawals points to the risk of creating strategic vacuums that rival powers could then fill to great advantage. Benjamin H. Friedman, director of policy at Defense Priorities, explains why such fears are without merit. He discusses, among many topics, the value of territory in contemporary international politics, how power generates paranoia, and whether the U.S. should reduce its force posture abroad.Show Notes:Benjamin H. In this episode of the Rooted Parent podcast, Anna interviews author Christina Fox about her newest book, Like Our Father: How God Parents Us and Why That Matters for Our Parenting. They discuss how Christina came to recognize that her best guide in parenting her sons was the way that God parents all of us, and how God's fatherhood helps her in her anxiety as a mom. They also go in-depth discussing boundaries and discipline with kids, and how the fear of the Lord transforms our fear of everything else. Finally, Christina ends with a word of grace for parents. Listen- and be encouraged- as she relates gardening to God to parenting our children.Rooted review of Like Our FatherRooted review of A Holy Fear Rooted Review of Sufficient HopeChristina's Rooted author page

In this episode of the Monday Mess Haul, Nathan, Kshitish, and Boaz get technical. The Quick Take: what are the ethical implications of an experimental AI using a publicly-available dataset to identify 40,000 theoretical chemical weapons? The Big Dig: how much can you actually claim as your own personal information? That's what's up for debate with a recent opinion concerning the language of the California Consumer Protection Act. The Final Cut: how effective are empirical methods for training task variations in robotics? The Mess Haul features a more free-form conversational approach with multiple participants than our more interview-focused style. This format is designed to generate quick takes on a handful of recent topics, facilitating shorter, more opinionated discussion with a number of different perspectives. Each episode of The Mess Haul is (usually) recorded, edited, and released in the same day. This podcast is A Reading of articles found as I researched Tribunals which have been taking place at GITMO, via two alternative news sites (which are NOT BEING censored) nor are they censoring information that Americans have a RIGHT to know. The Military Tribunal of Hillary Clinton has amplified an example of how one KEY person in an extremely large coterie of political elitists and celebs used position and power to run a global human trafficking ring, while in the office of Secretary of State, Senator, First Lady, and a twice candidate for the highest office in the United States, and was able to get away with unspeakable heinous crimes against humanity (thousands upon thousands of babies/children, specific charge is the human trafficking of 26 children from Haiti, after the earthquake), and paid it with American taxpayer monies - for at least 40 years. The recent Suez Canal ship - EVERGREEN - was one of the main ships the detainee used to create a global trafficking industry. On the evening of Monday April 26, 2021, after 5 Days of the ‘Clinton Military Tribunals’, Hillary Rodham Clinton was hanged by the neck, at Guantanamo Bay for TREASON, Murder, Accessory to Murder, Child Trafficking, High Crimes (i.e., Crimes Against Humanity, Molech Practices, Satanic/Luciferian Ritual Sacrifices, Lewd/Lascivious acts on babies/children, cannibalism, etc.). The text for the last segment of this podcast is titled 'Hillary Clinton is Dead and Why That Matters'. In lieu of recording A Reading of the hanging at GITMO, I prefer to READ to you the positive items, which her death will guarantee. This woman was called EVIL by those she conspired with in these crimes, such as Huma Abidin and John Podesta, who were witnesses who will receive a jail cell for life, due to their cooperation. This condemned detainee - Hillary Clinton - has now literally dropped off of the World stage (no pun intended). Well, this is fun. Here's another episode featuring me, Robbie Swale. No guests this time, and no content from the past, either: this all new and includes some exciting announcements, as well as insights and stories I haven't shared before from my experience of creating new ways of working in my coaching business. In particular, I talk about:The lessons I've learned from the three group coaching programmes I've launched: how do we start a group coaching programme? How do we sell one to people? The four criteria I use when deciding whether to create a new way of working in my business. And, most excitingly, I launch the new Coach's Journey Community, a new way to work with me, starting from just £10 a month. That community is wrapped up along with the new opportunity to support the Coach's Journey financially. If you value this work that I'm doing and want to make it easier for me to continue it, and give it the potential to grow faster and further, you might want to consider becoming a Supporter. But don't worry, the podcast will always be free and there's no presure at all from me to support the podcast financially. That's only part of the episode, though - creating the Coach's Journey Community and a new one-on-one engagement that I'm running with several clients this autumn made me really think about how and when I create new ways of working with clients. In this episode, I've tried to really share how I think about creating new ways of working, including why I'm excited about this one, and all kinds of things that might be valuable to you on your journey as a coach. If there's anything I didn't cover or anything you want to ask, let me know and maybe I'll do a follow-up episode answering questions! For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.To read more about supporting The Coach's Journey, or to become a Supporter or a Community Member, visit https://www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people I mentioned (that you might be interested in):~5: My article, ‘Jordan Peterson Is Not Evil and Why That Matters' - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/jordan-peterson-evil-why-matters-robbie-swale/~10: My article, ‘How I Became A Full Time Coach Less Than Two Years After Finishing My Training' on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-i-became-full-time-coach-less-than-two-years-after-robbie-swale~10: My 200th LinkedIn Article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lessons-from-200-linkedin-articles-out-robbie-swale/~13: Phil Bolton and on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-2-phil-bolton-from-forensic-accountant-to-the-go-to-career-coach-in-london-and-on-to-work-with-ceos-mds-and-founders~13: Mike Toller: https://www.michaeltollercoaching.co.uk/~13: Vegard Olsen: https://coachingpartner.net/cp/en/vegard-olsen-2/~14: Joel Monk on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-6-joel-monk-conversations-at-the-cutting-edge-of-coaching & The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Leap-Conquer-Hidden-Level/dp/0061735361~16: Rich Litvin and The Prosperous Coach: https://richlitvin.com/the-prosperous-coach/~16: My article, 6 Reasons Why Hiring A Coach Is The Most Important Thing For You To Do If You Want A Successful Coaching Business: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/writing/6-reasons-why-hiring-a-coach-is-the-most-important-thing-for-you-to-do-if-you-want-a-successful-coaching-business~20: Minor Arias on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-3-minor-arias-living-by-design-glz56~22: Warren Buffet's 25 things game - see Number 2, here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/15-ways-transform-your-relationship-time-get-more-done-robbie-swale/~26: Kristen Kosinski on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-7-kristen-kosinski-power-of-being-truly-seen-with-all-your-messiness~33: My article, The Pioneering Women of Our Age on my website: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2018/9/10/the-pioneering-women-of-our-age and on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/pioneering-women-our-age-robbie-swale/~35: Katie Harvey on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-1-katie-harvey-14000-hours-of-coaching-being-part-of-the-uk-coaching-vanguard-and-being-a-generalist-coach~36: The Genius Accelerator Group Coaching Programme: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/the-genius-accelerator~44: Jordan Hall: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMzT-mdCqoyEv_-YZVtE7MQ and more about the Zone of Genius and Hall's influence on my thinking about that in the introduction to The Power To Choose: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2019/12/30/the-power-to-choose-preview~55: My brother. Tom Oliver - The Self Delusion: The Surprising Science of How We Are Connected and Why That Matters...with TRE's Dave Hodgson
The authors of a new book argue that national security “fearmongering” is causing U.S. leaders to focus more on the threats that Americans perceive—like terrorism and nuclear war—than the ones that exist at home, like gun violence and the opioid crisis. In Clear and Present Safety: The World Has Never Been Better and Why That Matters to Americans (Yale University Press), Michael Cohen and Micah Zenko argue that “The American public is being fed, by politicians and pundits alike, a steady diet of threat inflation that has made them deeply fearful of the world outside their borders.“ In this episode, Thomas Wright, director of the Center on the United States and Europe and senior fellow in the Project on International Order and Strategy at Brookings, speaks with Zenko, a columnist at Foreign Policy, about the premise of the book, the geopolitical risks that do exist, and what role foreign policy might play in the 2020 presidential election. Zenko explains why the mid-1990s were the most dangerous time to be alive, the wide array of domestically driven risks, and why these factors matter more to American security than distant threats. Also, meet Christen Linke Young, a fellow in our USC-Brookings Schaeffer Initiative for Health Policy. Find out what she’s working on and why she recommends reading both Dreamland, by Sam Quinones, about the rise of the opioid epidemic, and Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. Boston Globe columnist Michael A. Cohen, the coauthor of the new book "Clear and Present Safety: The World Has Never Been Better and Why That Matters to Americans," explains why we're worried about the wrong stuff, why Harry Truman was arguably the GOAT of scaring the hell out of Americans unnecessarily, and why it's silly for the Democrats to let concerns about "firing up" Donald Trump's base influence their 2020 primary process. We are fed a steady stream of doom and gloom—terrorist attacks, erosion of democracy, robots taking our jobs. But Michael A. Cohen and his co-author Mich Zenko argue in Clear and Present Safety: The World Has Never Been Better and Why That Matters to Americans (Yale University Press, 2019) that our world has never been “more peaceful, freer, healthier, better educated, and wealthier,” and we only feel otherwise because of “threat inflation” that sensationalizes relatively minor threats. In our discussion, Cohen readily acknowledges serious problems remain, such as climate change and gun violence, but urges us to recognize how much progress has been made and apply the lessons that have been learned. Moreover, he asks us to beware the “threat-industrial complex” of military agencies, special interest groups and the media that distort our understanding of the world we live in. The world has never been safer, wealthier or healthier. So why is it that our foreign policy is dominated by fear and inflated perceptions of threats that can harm us? My guest today, Michael Cohen, and co-author Micah Zenko seek to answer that question in their new book Clear and Present Safety: The World Has Never Been Better and Why That Matters to Americans. The book makes the convincing argument that fear mongering has distorted US foreign policy and distracted us from recognizing impressive gains in human development. This is a very refreshing conversation. One trend that Cohen and Zenko identify an define is something they call the Threat-Industrial-Complex and we spend a good deal of time discussing how that serves to shape US foreign policy priorities. If you have 20 minutes and want a good corrective on US foreign policy, have a listen. Support the show and become a premium subscriber!
In this episode, Chris, Bryan, and Melanie take a broad look at the administration's FY2020 defense budget request. They discuss whether or not it is the "masterpiece" that Pat Shanahan promised, and agree (!) that the budget process is in need of serious reform. They ask whether it aligns with the National Defense Strategy, what Congress (especially the Democratic House with many domestic priorities) will think of it, and how it will be paid for in a time of ever-growing deficits. Finally, Chris takes the secretary of state to task, Melanie is irritated with what's going on in higher ed, and Bryan welcomes a friend home. We start a series on the missional theology axioms we work through in our coaching. Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke share a few thoughts on the first axiom: God is always present and at work… something most Christians would affirm, but we don’t often live as if it’s true.
