Join us as we sit down with Lauren Sivak, Executive Director of the Opportunity Project, to unravel the challenges and triumphs of providing quality afterschool programs for Tulsa's youth. Listen in as we discuss the ripple effects of recent federal funding cuts on enrichment initiatives and share insights into the impactful work of after-school programs. Our chat not only covers the essential role these programs play in youth development but also touches on the city's unexpectedly smooth traffic and spacious parking—a lighthearted contrast to the serious topic at hand.Venture into the world of after-school enrichment as we reflect on the surprising cultural shift from voluntary to paid programming for educators in Tulsa. With Lauren's guidance, we explore the emotional and financial investment in after-school programs, highlighting the generous support for teachers and the essential need for diverse and inclusive opportunities for students. From cooking clubs to robotics, every activity holds educational value. Amidst the backdrop of our own high school memories and club aspirations, we underscore the challenges non-profits face in sustaining these valuable programs, especially in today's financial climate.Cap off this enlightening conversation with a look at the big dreams for Tulsa's afterschool scene, including the need for data-driven decision-making and tracking to ensure the safety and success of these programs. We stand up for the importance of social and emotional learning in the face of skepticism, affirming that fostering a sense of safety and inclusion is fundamental for learning. As we navigate the contentious educational landscape, we reaffirm our belief in the power of a well-educated populace to sustain a functioning democracy. So tune in, get involved, and see how you can be a part of empowering the next generation. And don't forget to go to their fundraiser, Data on Draft on April 25th! Guest Robert “Bob” Wilson is a leader at Work Comp College, created to offer a deeper dive into workplace protections for employees. He's not a lawyer or an academic type, but he's long held an interest in the programs designed to protect workers and employers. The field of helping workers recover from workplace injuries can get better, through training, tech, and, most importantly, through a renewed focus on recovery. Wilson asks how can we bring the human element back. For attorneys representing both the injured worker and employers – even insurers – it seems we've forgotten about people, injured people the families who depend on them. Maybe it's time to focus on restoring lives, not “processing claims.” Dive into the world of making injured workers whole. Go beyond “compensation” and focus on “recovery,” getting to the right doctors, the right treatment, and getting back to feeling independent and enjoying meaningful work. Workers' Comp is there to provide financial resources when workers are injured, but Wilson believes we go beyond “comp” and get to “recovery.”

I, like most people, failed as a mainstream school mom, as a homeschooler and I hated special needs education.. both mainstream school parenting, and home education. You don't have to. Instead of trying to fit your child into a box that is claustrophobic and outdated - even for so-called "neurotypical" children, you can reclaim freedom and a peaceful childhood for your child. What we talk about in this podcast:How to get started. Now. The perfect solution for overwhelmed moms with kids who don't fit into the outdated school system. How home education honours "special interests" and could be a positive experience for your autistic child. How home education reclaims childhood and replaces the "hamsterwheel" stress with slow mornings, long walks in nature and conflict-free learning. How child-led learning takes the pressure out of life as a mom and how to wave goodbye to boring homework without sacrificing your child's learning experience. Why you don't have to "work like a teacher" or feel like you have to "take on even more" to do this. You don't even have to follow boring curriculums or be good at maths. Not at all. In fact - unlearning, enjoying life in the forest, reading favourite books, going to museums and roaming free IS the curriculum in child-led home education. How to deal with resistance from other people and experts within the system. How to make it work financially and practically. In classes at school, students are often expected to learn the same thing at the same time. An emphasis on information transmission and uniformity can lead to disengagement. What would it look like if school learning felt more engaging, meaningful, relevant, and authentic? What and how would teens want to learn? In this episode, we're hearing from young people about how and what they wish they learned in school. This episode is sponsored by the XQ institute. Check them out at XQ Super School and follow XQ America on TikTok and on Instagram to share your experience as a student and change what learning looks like.

This, my friend, is a BIG TOPIC that we must address and help set the captives free! One of the most frequent questions I get from teachers and parents is, " Is it really worth it? How much time do you spend preparing lessons? Isn't it a lot to work from home and teach multi-age children?" Today I am discussing the trade-offs and how my life has changed as a teacher who transferred from teaching in public school to homeschooling and now running a micro-school. I hope I shed some light on work life balance so you, too, can become the teacher God created you to be-free of stress, overwhelm, workaholic mentality. We've got step-by-step instructions to help you write powerful marketing brochures, enrollment forms, introductory packets, and so much more! You'll also find easy-to-use templates made to simplify your creation process, as well as beautiful real-life examples used by my micro-school, Lighthouse Learning, to give you creative inspiration when designing your very own forms. You will be able to seal the deal with peace and clarity when you hand deliver your new handbook and contract. Ralston School is a rural Alberta K-9 school but the majority of attendees are British students whose parents serve at British Army Training Unit Suffield. These visiting families are often shocked at the wide-open “nothingness” that seems to surround their community. Ralston's Prairie Rose Possibility is to help both international and local families discover the surprising diversity and opportunities that exist on the Prairies and learn from Indigenous perspectives as well. Listen in as teacher Wade Carrier tells how he is infusing “Learning from the Land” into all the courses he teaches. Student Poppy will compare Southern Alberta to her home in the UK and she and Parker will tell about one of their most impactful experiences in Learning from the Land. Check out their initial installment in episode 1.7.

Proposition 119: Learning Enrichment and Academic Progress, or LEAP, will appear on Colorado's November ballot and proposes a phased 5% additional tax on recreational marijuana to fund out of school learning enrichment opportunities for eligible Colorado children. On this episode of Common Sense Digest, Host and Chairman of Common Sense Institute Earl Wright welcomes Michael Johnston and Doug Robinson to discuss the measure's origin, its need, and how it would function. As the great Albert Einstein once said “I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn”. Classroom based learning in my opinion separates the body from the mind, whereas moving the classroom outside creates all sorts of new learning experiences for children in a variety of subjects. My guest today founded a company initially named Maths of the Day in 2015, latterly to be re-branded as Teach Active in 2019 as it is known today. Jon Smedley gave birth to the idea of delivering the primary Maths and English curriculum through physical activity after his work in a school with poor Maths attainment and enjoyment towards the subject. Fast forward to today and Jon has grown Teach Active to 3500 lesson plans reaching 1000 schools and along the way has picked up some awards including the Education Resources Award for Resource or Equipment of the year and The Education Show Award for School Resources and Equipment for Learning at the Bett Awards. In Today's conversation Jon explains all about Teach Active and how it can save teachers hours of time, which for the packed national curriculum is a bonus, how the active lessons allow for greater retainment and recollection of information if learning is put into a game, and some wonderful, unexpected by-products including improved social skills, team-work, resilience, collaboration, improved behaviour and wanting to come to school! So without further ado I have great pleasure in introducing Jon Smedley. Resources: - Teach Active website: Teach Active - Active Maths & English Lessons - Instagram: Teach Active: teachactive - Twitter Teach Active: @TeachActive - Book recommendation – Teaching With the Brain in Mind – Eric Jensen, Spark - Jon Ratey. Answer to my question on what would you put in a message in a bottle to promote physical activity in children “Active humans do better". Once again thank you for taking the time to listen. On the July 14, 2021 episode of Liberal Dan Radio I will be discussing the premature return to schools for children under 12. More children are going to the ICU with this new variant. Why are we not offering a choice in distance learning to parents with children who can't be vaccinated? Also, we will be discussing the Texas Democrats who are modern day heroes for using their power to block these rediculous so called "Voter ID" laws that mostly have provisions that are not pertaining to having an ID. With Gov. Charlie Baker pressuring schools to reopen in-person, no one is arguing that this is the best way for students to learn. Some union officials and parents are worried about sending their kids to school with community-based cases increasing, and have pushed back. But what metrics should districts be basing their reopening decisions off of, and how can communication improve between local decision-makers and the state? Mary Beth Miotto, Vice President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Glenn Koocher, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees join the Codcast to unpack these questions.
