Episode 49 - The idea of launching an asset management firm has been floating in Pavlo's mind since 2017 when he began working on a statistical model, which later resulted in a trading algorithm. As a result, in 2020, the private fund was launched to utilize the underlying algorithm, and PG Capital Management Group became an advisory firm to the private fund. Later on, the decision was made to expand the firm's reach by becoming a registered investment advisory firm. By the end of 2020, the wealth management department was officially launched. For Pavlo, who earned degrees in economics and finance from SUNY at Geneseo and always had an entrepreneurial spirit, the idea of working in the asset management field was evident, and it was just a matter of time before he would launch his own asset management firm. Episode 8: Host Jim Ray interviews Dr. Bradley Stevenson, Associate Professor of Finance at the Rubel School of Business and Meagan Makuta, a graduating senior finance major. We'll discuss how Bellarmine University's Investment Group, how BU prepares students for the CFA and CFP exams, a new Bloomberg Terminal at Bellarmine. Bellarmine Prepares Students for the CFP and CFA Exams The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) exam is focused on retirement planning, savings and a general personal financial plan. Dr. Stevenson recommends seeking out a professional with the CFP designation, who is also a financial advisor. This shows his/her background and commitment to the profession. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is made up of 3 separate exams. Meagan is currently studying for the CFA Level 1 exam. The CFA is more geared toward financial management and investing. It's an internationally-recognized designation. In the Rubel School of Business, at Bellarmine, the curriculum provides a solid foundation, in addition to the self-study, to equip students to perform well on these exams. Bellarmine is actually a CFA-Affiliated Program. For finance majors, at they complete their courses, they will touch on roughly 70% of the material found on the Level 1 exam. Our finance degree is a combination of finance, accounting and economics classes, among others. Bellarmine's Getting a Bloomberg Terminal Meagan discusses her involvement in helping to secure this terrific new tool for the Rubel School of Business. This computer terminal and the data available is the gold standard for financial information on virtually any type of security. Tools and resources such as the Bloomberg Terminal will continue to provide cutting-edge technology for students at the Rubel School of Business. Dr. Stevenson explains that this terminal is significantly different than the other online tools you might be able to find. The information is much more in-depth. It'll provide important experience for students as they apply for jobs upon graduating. The Investment Group actually back-tests it's investment models via this terminal to understand performance modeling of investment securities and strategies. Bellarmine Investment Group Dr. Stevenson is the current faculty advisor for this student group. Meagan was one of the co-presidents of the group. It's her favorite activity at Bellarmine. This group is given the responsibility of actually managing a small portion of the university's endowment fund. They're working with “real money.” This is an interesting way for students interested in pursuing the CFA to gain practical insights. Bellarmine's Finance Degree Dr. Stevenson discusses several aspects of the finance program at Bellarmine. The University has a long tradition of a very solid accounting program. One of the differences at Bellarmine is that finance majors do the entire intermediate accounting sequence, as part of their program. The economics classes of investment theory plus money and banking are also included. Finance is the intersection of accounting and economics. Employers seem to value the fact that Bellarmine finance majors have a strong accounting background, as well. Bellarmine is a liberal arts institution. This focus provides finance majors with the ability to think critically, remain adaptable and the ability to think and write well. The university provides a very well-rounded curriculum. Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed during the Bellarmine on Business podcast do not necessarily reflect those of Bellarmine University, its administration or the faculty at large. Wow can you imagine we are closing in on 100 episodes. We are glad to have Tobe back as he has now completed the CFA Level 2 exam and awaiting his results. This week was action packed as we touched on topics in many different industries. We started off by discussing a new education repayment plan created by Purdue University. The plan would allow students to pay no money upfront but instead, pay a percentage of their income for 10 years post graduation. In the world of tech, the US has disallowed the sales of Hauwei devices due to homeland security issues. Hauwei has been known to plant chips in their phone that are able to spy and record calls. This is going to dramatically affect Hauwei's revenue over the next 2 years if this ban remains in affect. The options for the vegan community are starting to pile up. Tyson's recently announced they are getting in on the vegan burger craze. Beyond Meat seems to be the most popular brand right now. Their stock has fared very well since the IPO (initial public offering) last month. Tyson's is a more mature company and has a bigger capitalization. We'll keep an eye on how much market share Tyson's will be able to obtain. How could I forget about Daddy DotCom or Elon Musk. Elon Musk temporarily changed his screen name on Twitter over the weekend. Is this a sign that a big announcement is approaching? We'll have to wait and see. We also touched on a legal battle that is looming with Google, the Raptors' championship season, and more! SUBSCRIBE. RATE. COMMENT
Another day, another dollar. Another week, more Corpoate Coke & Smack! Tobe is currently preparing for the CFA Level 2 exam but that doesn't stop the show. During this show, Kristian recaps the weekend and also some major opportunities that may be coming available to interested investors. Kristian also discussed her entrepreneurial venture, Mini Mogul Academy, and how the education of children is important for our future. In today's society, the curriculum in public school's isn't always adequate in a child's development. Yes, BREWCAST listeners, you read correctly - this is the last episode in this season. Don't worry, I'll do a wrap up next week to let you know what's coming next. With all this discussion about MBAs, it’s time to talk about another option when it comes to educating yourself – the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. I’d like to welcome Bryan Dawley to the show to share his knowledge about the CFA! Bryan recently completed the program, and I was keen to chat to him about how he made the decision to take his CFA, how he worked through the massive amount of content, and some of the tactics he used to get through the program successfully. Bryan is a P.Eng with a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. And yes, like the other engineers I have had on the show, he tracked the hours he put into the program via spreadsheet…surprise! We talk a lot about the differences and similarities between the two programs. A few highlights from the show: • How the CFA is 100% self-directed whereas the MBA is very group focused - the time commitments are structured differently, and we discuss how this changes the dynamic of the program • The considerations in terms the time and energy sacrifice required to complete an MBA or a CFA are quite similar. On the contrary, we also talk about how the delivery of the programs are very different • We talk about the difference in cost between the two programs and how it serves as a major differentiator • Tactics Bryan used for motivation and discipline to get through the program • How completing either a CFA or MBA improves your performance at work I have a new appreciation for the CFA Program, and I think it is a great alternative to an MBA. It could also compliment an MBA if you are just a little bit crazy - you know who you are! There is one last comparison that I think is worth noting between the two programs. And that is the pass rate. I realize we aren’t comparing apples to apples here, and certainly the barriers to entry for starting the programs are miles apart, primarily due to the cost. It’s hard to not be fully committed to an MBA with the price tag, whereas with the CFA, there may be many that are just testing it out. Here are the pass rates for the CFA: • Level 1: ~45% of candidates that sit for the exam pass • Level 2: ~45% of candidates that sit for the exam pass • Level 3: ~55% of candidates that sit for the exam pass Congratulations to Bryan for finishing his CFA (all three levels) successfully, and a big thanks to him for being on the show. If you have more questions about CFA’s, send me a note and I will put you in touch with Bryan.
