The Bruce Lee series kicks it's way back onto the feed as Caleb and Isaac return to discuss our sophomore entry in the Year of the Dragon, as they discuss the 1972 film, Fist of Fury. Lo Wei makes his return to the director's chair, kicking off an unlikely franchise covering the (fictional) legend of Chen Zhen, a character who would see several sequels, as well as a remake which received a spin-off and a sequel.    Note from the editor: In the discussion Caleb claims that this character is either based on a legend, or is a legendary figure in his own-right: This is only partially true. The Master in the film was indeed real, but Chen Zhen is fictional, supposedly inspired by Liu Zhensheng, a student of the real life teacher Bruce Lee's character is avenging.     This episode was recorded on Feb. 9th, 2024.    Email the show at thenoviceelitists@gmail.com or reach out to us on twitter @CalebAlexader

What's the relationship between front-of-package food labeling and consumer choice, and how can it potentially impact grocery prices? Dr. Chen Zhen is a professor in Food Choice, Obesity, and Health Economics at the University of Georgia.  His research focuses on the impact of interpretative front-of-package labeling on consumer behavior and food prices.  In this conversation, Zhen discusses policies that can discourage consumption of less nutrient-dense foods (such as taxation) versus those that focus on access (making more nutritious food more accessible and less nutritious food less accessible), as well as the potential confusion caused by nutrition facts panels. While a combination of policies may benefit the nutritional intake of lower-income consumers, Zhen highlights a study that demonstrated how a soda tax reduced the consumption of sugary beverages among low-income individuals, while a fruit and vegetable subsidy did not have a significant impact on their overall nutrition score.  He discussed three categories of policies to address the issue of food prices and consumer choices. The first category is taxation, where the aim is to tax unhealthy food to discourage consumption. However, there are concerns about the potential costs and impact on consumer welfare. The second category is access policy, which involves making healthier food more accessible and less healthy food less accessible. For example, removing sugary drinks from schools. However, there can be compensation effects where people consume more unhealthy food outside of school. The third category is information provision policy, such as nutrition fact labels. Chen mentioned the recommendation for interpretative and summary nutrition labels on the front of packages to help consumers better understand the information. He also mentioned his research on yogurt and consumer confusion with labels. He referenced a study on yogurt that examined the impact of a nutrition labeling change on sales. The study found that when a yogurt product received a lower nutrition score, its sales decreased. Conversely, when a yogurt product received a higher score, its sales increased. However, the study also discovered that retailers adjusted the prices of the yogurt products to offset the sales effects of the labeling change. After accounting for the pricing effect, it was found that about 40% of the labeling effect was offset by the retailer's pricing strategy. This suggests that the impact of nutrition labeling on consumer behavior can be influenced by pricing strategies implemented by retailers. Chen mentioned that low-income individuals tend to purchase less healthy foods due to financial constraints. Chen also highlighted the potential impact of labeling and pricing strategies on nutritional disparities. He is now working on a USDA grant that aims to examine the nutrition disparity resulting from nutrition labels. The hypothesis is that if a product receives a lower nutrition score, retailers may lower the price, and low-income individuals may be more sensitive to these price reductions, leading to increased consumption of unhealthy foods. Chen also mentioned a study on pricing policies, where a soda tax was found to reduce the consumption of sugary beverages among low-income individuals, while a fruit and vegetable subsidy did not have a significant impact on their overall nutrition score. He suggested that a combination of taxes on unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthier options may be more effective in addressing nutritional disparities. Dr. Zhen discussed three categories of interventions that policymakers can make to address the obesity epidemic: pricing strategies (such as soda taxes), access policies (making healthier food more accessible and less healthy food less accessible), and information provision policies (like nutrition labels). Chen emphasized that while taxes can be effective, they come with costs, so labels are often preferred by economists. Chen's research focused on the impact of soda taxes and found that low-income households responded more to the taxes, resulting in reduced consumption of sugary beverages. Additionally, Chen explored the potential unintended consequences of labeling and pricing strategies, particularly in relation to low-income individuals. However, it's important to note that any food taxes are regressive and may face political resistance. If you're curious as to how front-of-package labels and food policies can have unintended consequences on grocery prices and his predictions on grocery inflation, listen in for more of Zhen's research and insights.

Wah Lum Kung Fu: Hacking Cosplay at San Diego Comicon Every once in awhile the InSecurity Podcast takes a walk with the word “hack” to other parts of existence.   Yeah yeah… hard to believe that there are actual things out there besides cybersecurity…   In this special episode,  Matt Stephenson will be talking with some folks who are hacking what could already be considered a hack. If we know our audience, it is a fair bet to say that there are plenty of folks who know the names Chun-Li (No… not the Nicki Minaj song, but that’s an interesting point) or Chen Zhen.   For those not on a first name basis… you definitely are familiar with Mortal Kombat or Double Dragon.   Okay… do we really have to resort to The Matrix? Kung Fu Panda?   We hope not   The point is that for the last 50 years, you would be hard pressed to look in a corner of American culture and not find the influence of Kung Fu.   Whether it is the greatest hip-hop collective ever The Wu-Tang Clan or Cirque Du Soleil’s KA… Maybe it is Kato from the Green Hornet or Morpheus or Chirrut Imwe in Rogue One… Kung Fu has evolved to a place where fight choreographers and stunt workers are getting billing nearly equal to writers and directors in film and television.   What does any of this have to do with Cylance or cybersecurity? Take a walk with us…   Cylance’s own Hiep Dang is a Sifu of Wah Lum Kung Fu and this week will be part of an amazing teaching session at San Diego Comicon!   Cosplayers, Ready your Swords!   Did you spend months making your costume? Ready to learn how to properly wield and pose with your sword, hammer, or lightsaber?    Cosplayers will learn how to bring their characters to life from Hollywood stunt performers and martial arts experts. Mimi Chan (model and martial arts reference for Disney’s Mulan) andChristopher Leps, (Pirates of the Caribbean, Daredevil) will partake in a discussion moderated by martial arts expert, Oscar Agramonte about their action experience and how it relates to cosplay.   Learn how to bring authenticity to your character from the panel and a team of martial arts experts. Be ready for action!   In todays’ special San Diego Comic Con episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson welcomes Sifu Mimi Chan and Sifu Hiep Dang to talk about a very different kind of hack. Kung Fu has been hacking Western culture for nearly 50 years. Cosplay has been hacking culture for nearly as long. It’s time the two got together. That’s exactly what is happening at SDCC. Find out more on this week’s InSecurity!   As a special treat for our listeners, you can get a one year 10 device subscription of Cylance Smart Antivirus for 50% off during the month of Comic Con. Click here to find out how!   About Mimi Chan   Mimi Chan (@SifuMimiChan) has been a Wah Lum kung fu instructor for the past 25 years, and was chosen as the model and inspiration for Disney’s cartoon Mulan. At 17, she won her first of many kung fu Grand Championship titles and retired from competition undefeated. After working as a stunt performer for several years, in 2012, she produced and directed the award-winning documentary: Pui Chan: Kung Fu Pioneer. Mimi is also the host of Culture Chat Podcast. Culture Chat Podcast explores a variety of topics including: social issues, film, comics, martial arts, traditions, food, pop culture, music, or anything inspiring and thought-provoking.     About Hiep Dang   Hiep Dang (@Hiep_Dang) is Director of Product Management & Marketing for Cylance where he is responsible for driving the vision and strategy of its Consumer products. During the day, Hiep geeks out on building innovative security products at Cylance-Blackberry and on nights and weekends, he teaches Kung Fu in Portland, OR. The recurring theme that persists in both his personal and professional lives is his passion for helping others learn how to keep themselves safe and secure in both the virtual and physical world.   About Matt Stephenson Insecurity Podcast host Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Security Technology team at Cylance, which puts him in front of crowds, cameras, and microphones all over the world. He is the regular host of the InSecurity podcast and host of CylanceTV   Twenty years of work with the world’s largest security, storage, and recovery companies has introduced Matt to some of the most fascinating people in the industry. He wants to get those stories told so that others can learn from what has come   Every week on the InSecurity Podcast, Matt interviews leading authorities in the security industry to gain an expert perspective on topics including risk management, security control friction, compliance issues, and building a culture of security. Each episode provides relevant insights for security practitioners and business leaders working to improve their organization’s security posture and bottom line.   Can’t get enough of Insecurity? Story: China 1967. To think outside the box is an exceptional ability and one that few people can claim to possess. Just to capture an occasional spark of that creative enlightenment, we often have to break away from the confines of existing norms. For most Chinese and other descendants of agrarian societies, Lv Jiamin's semi-autobiographical novel "Wolf Totem", which he wrote in 2004 under the pseudonym Jiang Rong, was a real eye-opener about life on the Mongolian grasslands. Now a decade has passed, Jean-Jacques Annaud's film adaptation of the story once again warns us against the complacency that we might hold for our current way of living.Like the original novel, the French director's adaptation is a eulogy to nomadic cultures. The lead character Chen Zhen is a student who is sent to the Inner Mongolian steppes for re-education in the 1960s. While living among the nomads, the city boy observed (but failed to learn) the locals' respect for freedom and nature and became fascinated with the wolves, the agents of nature in nomadic belief. The ancient Chinese literati liked to place themselves at the centre of a middle kingdom and always bragged about their cultural superiority as compared to the outlying barbarians. While they may have thrived in the affluence of a self-contained agrarian economy, they also missed out on the vitality and enterprise of an open society. They were equally forgetful of the renewed strength that China obtained from each wave of "barbarian" invasions. On the contrary, both the "Wolf Totem" novel and the film note and glorify a so-called pastoral lifestyle which contemplates everything in a circle of life and seeks to maintain a balance of all living things in the food chain. That means farming is not necessarily the best means of living, wolves are not necessarily a nuisance and their cunning, discipline and patience in their game of hunting represent the naturalist wisdom of a heavenly deity.Exactly how much of the story reflects the true pastoral way of living or whether it is morally acceptable to glamorise such a killer instinct is open to debate, but as worldwide consumerism depletes the planet's resources at unprecedented rates, such a story does give us a perspective outside our usual line of thought to examine the issue of progress and sustainability. Ours should not be a debate about the superiority of nomadic or agrarian cultures, but whether and how we should save both from total annihilation in the wake of expanding consumerism and information industry. By depicting the free spirit of the wolves, Jean-Jacques Annaud is indeed directing our thinking capacity to study our current state from the perspective of an outsider.Annaud himself did the unthinkable by refusing to cast digital wolves. With the help of Scottish animal trainer Andrew Simpson, the crew have spent three years breeding three generations of Mongolian grassland wolves, until the animals are taught to run, sit, snarl and do all kinds of stunts people don't normally see at the Cirque du Soleil. In the end, the "Wolf Totem" film contains the best of about a thousand shots of real wolves, their performance overshadow their Homo Sapien counterparts in the cast.Actor Feng Shaofeng has made a bit of a name in recent years after his portrayal of several masculine characters. Although he always lacked the kind of subtlety required of a first-rate actor, he has done a good job at picking projects. In "Wolf Totem", his big, innocent eyes were perfect for the role of wolf-lover Chen Zhen, who neither quite understands the prudence of the Agrarian Han people, nor the naturalist wisdom of the grassland-roamers. His performance here is satisfactory, but to win top honours, he will have to think outside the box and pick more challenging roles in the future. So in conclusion, "Wolf Totem" is an unconventional movie with strong philosophical and artistic value. It is a story of wolves that kills at the very beginning of the Chinese year of sheep.
