New Year's always has us looking inward, hoping for a fresh start. Creating resolutions, however, causes too much pressure, so we prefer to announce our intentions and free ourselves from potential regret if/when we don't achieve them. Helping us through the yearly reboot process in 2025 are Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers, whose new DSTLRYcomic Time Waits, done in collaboration with artists Marcus To and Marvin Sianipar, colorist Matt Wilson, letterer Ariana Maher, and editor Allison O'Toole, is the perfect excuse to contemplate our past, present, and future. The comic centers on Blue, who only wishes to tend his garden, love his wife Grace, and finally adopt Duke as his son. Unfortunately, Blue is a man out of time, and the future he came from is desperate to reclaim him and the items he stole. Time Waits delivers on John Wick levels of action and Primer levels of paradox paranoia without skipping heaps of human relationship drama. Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers are one half of the Mangasplaining podcast team, and we are delighted to discuss how their online comics discussions have shaped their comics-making process. Given the time of year that this episode arrives in, we found ourselves being even more introspective than usual, and Zdarsky and Brothers were more than happy to follow us into such philosophical quandaries. The first two issues of Time Waits are now available from DSTLRY, while the third and final issue will arrive in comic book shops on 1/22. Also, make sure you're following them online by subscribing to Mangasplaining. Nearly 300,000 breast augmentations are performed annually in the United States, and  25% of these women will go on to develop Breast Implant Illness. My next guest is Penny Treese, an extraordinary woman, mom, wife, artist, and workshop facilitator.  Penny spent two decades suffering from breast implant illness. During today's episode of THLZ, she shares her unimaginable story. Breast Implant Illness (BII) is a syndrome that includes a constellation of symptoms driven by a systemic inflammatory immune response occurring in women who have had breast augmentation.  Common Breast Implant Illness Symptoms that can manifest within weeks, months, or years after receiving breast implants:  Joint & Muscle Pain • Fatigue • Brain Fog • Rashes & Skin Issues • Anxiety • Depression •  Mood Swings • Food Sensitivity • Allergies • Autoimmune Disorders • Cancer Dr Lillian Schapiro, gynecologist and dear colleague, referred Penny to my clinical practice.  It took her nearly 6 months to finally contact me.  That one phone call changed her life forever, as well as mine.  Every aspect of Penny's health was in rapid decline, and in her own words, "Meg, I would have died in a few months if I didn't make that call and start working with you."  During our first session, I referred her to Dr David Brothers, an amazing explant surgeon located here in Atlanta.   Penny suffered for over 20 years with Breast Implant Illness (BII). Her symptoms of fatigue and Raynaud's syndrome developed within months of her breast augmentation. By the time Penny came to see me, she had depilating joint and muscle pain, a diagnosis of connective tissue disease that included Sjogren's syndrome, brain fog, and cognitive decline– so severe that she couldn't remember how she drove to our appointment.  I am honored to have Penny share her BII journey. She displays tremendous honesty, and vulnerability  coupled with immense grace and courage as she tells her story. This journey also includes our 9 months of working together and peeling back the onion that has helped her recover and reclaim her life.   Sweet Lovelies, If you haven't already, please subscribe on SPOTIFY OR ITUNES. BIG NEWS! Because our Kenta Shinohara podcasts were delayed we didn’t get around to covering a lot of important news from the past couple months. To remedy that, we decided to record a big news-focused podcast to get everyone up to speed! …This was a big bad idea. We accumulated nearly twelve pages worth of news, tallying to over one hundred stories in total! To make matters worse, we began recording late at night after I was already exhausted from drawing for nearly 20 hours that day. Thanks to a spotty internet connection, we ended up needing two recording sessions and over four hours of rough audio to cover everything we wanted to. Needless to say, recording this was a tiring process. You can definitely hear the exhaustion in my voice by the end of this podcast, alongside Colton’s groans of impatience. Though frankly, listening back to this episode I did most of the talking, so it’s kinda funny that Colton was more vocally upset by the experience. ^^, Regardless of how frustrating the process was, this was a necessary podcast to make. Discussing manga news is the reason this show originally came into being, and doing a purely news-focused episode brings us nostalgically back to the roots of our early episodes. Did we go a little overboard in the mountain of content we attempted to surmount? Perhaps. But hopefully you’ll find this podcast as valuable as we found these stories important to discuss. From lists to licenses, endings to sequels, controversies to scandals, and adaptations to anime this podcast is jam-packed with all the stories you need to know to understand where the manga industry is at as of Spring 2018! Manga Mavericks EP. 45: The Big News Roundup!

Manga Mavericks
