Greg Lambrecht ist einer dieser seltenen Menschen, bei denen man sofort spürt, dass sich mit einer einzigen Idee ein ganzes Denken verschiebt. Seine Erfindung – Coravin – hat die scheinbar simple Frage, ob man eine Flasche öffnet oder nicht, in eine neue Freiheit verwandelt: Wein glasweise genießen, ohne den Korken zu ziehen und ohne den Wein dahinter zeitlich „anzuschneiden“. Greg wurde 1969 in Manhattan geboren, wuchs später in Newport Beach auf und brachte aus dieser Welt zwischen Pazifik und Technikbegeisterung eine natürliche Neugier mit. Am MIT studierte er Nuclear und Mechanical Engineering, ursprünglich um medizinische Geräte zu entwickeln – von Chemotherapie-Infusionssystemen bis zu Kathetern. Der entscheidende Impuls für Coravin kam jedoch im Alltag: Als seine Frau schwanger war, merkte Greg, wie oft eine Flasche halb stehen blieb. Aus diesem Moment, gepaart mit seiner Erfahrung in minimalinvasiver Medizintechnik, entstand der erste Prototyp im eigenen Keller; 2013 brachte er Coravin schließlich auf den Markt. Heute werden seine Geräte in über 60 Ländern eingesetzt, mehr als 1,85 Millionen Mal verkauft, und gleichzeitig arbeitet Greg weiterhin an medizinischen Innovationen. Für die Weinwelt war Coravin zunächst ein technisches Experiment, dann ein Werkzeug – und inzwischen in vielen Restaurants eine selbstverständliche Infrastruktur. Mit einer feinen Nadel, Argongas und einem Korken, der sich nach jedem Einstich wieder schließt, konnte Greg erstmals zeigen, dass eine Flasche über Monate und Jahre hinweg glasweise entnommen werden kann, ohne dass der restliche Wein sensorisch nachlässt. Langjährige Blindproben belegen das eindrucksvoll: Coravin-Weine blieben praktisch identisch zu nie geöffneten Vergleichsflaschen. Gerade in der Gastronomie hat Greg damit etwas verändert, das weit über Technik hinausgeht. Wein-by-the-glass ist nicht länger ein Einstiegssortiment, sondern reicht bis zu gereiften Bordeaux, großen Champagnern und raren Burgundern. Coravin ist heute in zehntausenden Restaurants präsent, allein über 28.000 davon offiziell gelistet – eine stille, aber deutliche Verschiebung in der Art, wie Gäste Wein bestellen. Viele trinken inzwischen häufiger glasweise als flaschenweise, nicht aus Spargründen, sondern weil sie hochwertige Weine probieren möchten, ohne sich festzulegen. Für Sommeliers bedeutet das mehr stilistische Vielfalt, präzisere Pairings und weniger Verlust – und die Möglichkeit, Flaschen zu zeigen, die früher im Keller geblieben wären. Greg beschreibt seine Erfindung nie als Luxus, sondern als Werkzeug für Freiheit: weniger Verschwendung, mehr Zugang, mehr Entscheidungsmacht im Moment des Genießens. Für ihn liegt die eigentliche Innovation nicht in Nadel oder Gas, sondern im Verständnis des Problems: Die Flasche folgt einer linearen Logik, unser Trinkverhalten jedoch nicht. Genau diese Diskrepanz hat Greg gelöst – und damit eine der nachhaltigsten Veränderungen der modernen Weinkultur ausgelöst.

Oakford Pecans - a story of discovery and Pumpkin/Squash update Linda Eilks grew up on a farm outside of Oakford, Illinois. After careers at both IL Extension and U.S. Department of Agriculture, she retired and moved into a home within the village of Oakford. There she was faced with an abundance of pecans falling from the trees in her yard. She researched what to do with them and found some interesting historical facts about the pecan trees in the area. She will talk about pecan trees in general, those that grow around Oakford, and especially those that grow in her yard. Many moons ago, Catherine Lambrecht was a University of Illinois Extension Master Food Preserver instructed by Linda Eilks. As it happens, Eilks now lives in the region where pumpkins are commercially grown (80-mile radius from Morton, Illinois). Knowing Lambrecht was looking for a Dickinson Squash, Eilks found one of these squash for her. Lambrecht will update on her experience. Greg's background is in medicine, but he has been passionate about wine since his first sip of a vintage wine in Napa at age 16. He received his Master of Science in Medical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I'm not a wine guy, but the history of why wine is bottled in glass and the size of the bottle is interesting. Kinder, Erkrankte und alte Menschen sind ganz besonders auf die Fürsorge von anderen Personen, wie ihren Eltern oder Pflegekräften, angewiesen. Das Abhängigkeitsverhältnis zwischen ihnen verspricht Schutz, wird aber manchmal auch für Gewalt missbraucht. In dieser Folge “Mordlust - Verbrechen und ihre Hintergründe” geht es um den Tatbestand, der in solchen Fällen greift: die Misshandlung von Schutzbefohlenen. April 2020: Wegen Corona war die Kita der kleinen Emilia wochenlang geschlossen. Heute darf die Dreijährige endlich wieder hin. Weil sie das einzige Kind in der Notbetreuung ist, hat sie das ganze Spielzeug und auch ihre Erzieherin Vanessa für sich allein. Kein Wunder also, dass Emilia nach dem Mittagessen müde ins kleine Kinderbett fällt. Doch von ihrem Schlaf wacht sie nicht wieder auf. Als es um die Frage nach dem “Warum” geht, rückt Emilias Erzieherin in den Fokus und es wird klar: Der Atemstillstand der Dreijährigen war weder Unfall noch Einzelfall. In der Nähe der hauseigenen Terrasse des Senior:innenzentrums “Sonnensee”plätschert ein Bach. Ein idealer Ort für 130 Menschen, um hier ihren Lebensabend zu verbringen, weil ihr Körper oder der Kopf nicht mehr so funktionieren, wie sie es wollen. Auf den ersten Blick deutet nichts auf die Abgründe hin, die in einer perfiden Chatgruppe einiger Pfleger:innen mit dem Namen “Panzerknacker” festgehalten werden. Denn während sich die meisten, die dort arbeiten, um die Pflege der Alten bemühen, hat ein Trio etwas ganz anderes im Sinn. Schutzbefohlen sind laut Gesetz Personen unter 18, sowie gebrechliche und kranke Menschen, die unter der Sorgepflicht von anderen Personen stehen. Wenn die, die sie schützen sollten, zu Täter:innen werden, sind ihnen die Betroffenen oft wehrlos ausgeliefert. Das macht die Taten besonders perfide. Warum solche Fälle oft nicht aufgedeckt werden und wie sich etwa der Fachkräftemangel darauf auswirkt, hört ihr in dieser Folge.
