In this episode of Space Nuts Q&A, Andrew and Fred answer questions about supernovae, 3D printed telescopes, the Voyager space probe missions, and the possibility of using particle collision in space. They discuss how supernovae explosions do not blow away the gravitational field and how neutron stars develop as a result. They also provide insights into 3D printed telescopes and suggest that beginners may find it easier to start with an off-the-shelf telescope. They talk about the trajectory and potential fate of the Voyager spacecraft and discuss the challenges of building particle colliders in space. Overall, they provide informative and engaging answers to the audience's questions. Takeaways   Supernovae explosions do not blow away the gravitational field because gravity is associated with mass. The explosion only affects the outer envelope of the star, while the core collapses to become a neutron star. 3D printed telescopes can be a good option for beginners, but it may be easier to start with an off-the-shelf telescope. 3D printed telescopes require more components and may involve more fiddling around. The Voyager spacecraft will continue on their current trajectories and are not expected to pass near any star systems within human lifetimes. However, if they were near enough to Earth, they could be detectable by extraterrestrial intelligence. Building particle colliders in space is challenging due to the need for precise guidance and the high velocities of the particles. It may be more cost-effective and realistic to continue building particle colliders on Earth. The fate of the Voyager spacecraft is uncertain, but they could potentially be captured into orbit around another star or collide with other objects. They will likely outlast our species and continue on their trajectories away from the solar system. Dr. Ian O'Neill returns to talk to us about the real world applications of particle colliders, those giant expensive atom smashers which seem to produce a lot of math and announcements peppered with terms like “gluons” and “muons” the media tends to gloss over. But in reality, these machines are turning alchemy into reality, creating extremely effective cancer treatments, and helping us solve the mysteries of the universe. In fact, you're only listening to this podcast thanks to a particle collider…

Physics Colloquium 12th June 2015 delivered by Professer Swapan Chattopadhyay The frontier of beam physics and accelerator science is advanced via developments in material and microwave superconductivity, integrable and near-integrable nonlinear dynamics, advanced phase-space control techniques, and various novel concepts of plasmas, materials, lasers and quantum optics. We will touch upon some of the emerging ideas of “quantum-degenerate” particle and light beams, nonlinear integrable dissipative systems, laboratory-based free-electron lasers and single-electron quantum optics for various photon science, atomic, molecular and astro-particle physics “laboratory-based” experiments. These will be contrasted with the current conception of “large-scale” potential future particle colliders and high intensity proton accelerators for exploring the subatomic world beyond our current state of understanding.

While 27% of the Universe is made of dark matter, the particle identity of the dark matter still remains a mystery. Collider studies offers a complementary tool to explore the nature of the dark matter, in addition to dark matter direct and indirect detections. In this talk, I will discuss the collider studies of the dark matter, focusing on how to observe dark matter signals, and how to distinguish dark matter scenarios. I will cover the model-independent approach for the monojet/monophoton plus missing ET signals, as well as model-dependent signatures of dark matter produced in the cascade decay chain of parent particles.

They are aimed at achieving the highest lepton-antilepton collision energies and precision measurements of parameters of the neutrino mixing matrix. The performance and cost of these depend sensitively on how well a beam of muons can be cooled. Recent progress in muon cooling design studies and prototype tests nourish the hope that such facilities can be built during the next decade. The status of the key technologies and their various demonstration experiments will be summarized.

Precision Calculations for Gauge-Boson Pair Production with a Hadronic Jet at Hadron Colliders

Gauge-boson pair-production processes with an additional hadronic jet are of particular interest as background to Higgs and new-physics searches at hadron colliders. Moreover, they enable---besides genuine gauge-boson pair production---a direct analysis of the non-Abelian gauge-boson self-interactions in the electroweak sector. In this work we provide precision calculations for the processes pp->VV+jet+X. In detail, corrections to WW+jet, ZZ+jet, and WZ+jet production are evaluated at next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling (NLO QCD). Particular care has to be taken when treating the infrared singularities arising in the virtual and real corrections. The FormCalc/LoopTools package is applied for the virtual corrections, where dimensionally regularized infrared-divergent integrals are added to the FF library which is used for the regular ones. The real-emission matrix elements are evaluated in terms of helicity amplitudes in the Weyl--van-der-Waerden formalism. The Catani--Seymour dipole subtraction formalism mediates the cancellation of infrared divergences between the two contributions. To perform the numerical integration a multi-channel Monte Carlo integrator is written in C++, which is designed to meet the requirements of integrating cross sections in the dipole subtraction formalism. For all gauge-boson assignments, the NLO QCD corrections significantly stabilize the artificial dependence of the leading-order (LO) cross sections on renormalization and factorization scales for Tevatron. For LHC, however, only a modest reduction of the scale dependence results unless a veto on a second hard jet is applied. Beyond investigating the production processes, leptonic decays of the gauge bosons are considered. To this end, a full amplitude calculation including resonant and non-resonant contributions to the leptonic final states, a simple narrow-width approximation (NWA), and an improved version of the NWA that takes into account spin correlations are performed at LO. Comparing these approaches the improved NWA turns out to deliver an appropriate approximation to the decays at a reasonable level of accuracy. Thus, an NLO QCD calculation to VV+jet including leptonic decays is performed in the framework of the improved NWA. Several results on differential cross sections for quantities of the jet and the decay leptons are presented. For WW+jet, we discuss both proton--proton collisions at LHC and proton--antiproton collisions at Tevatron. For WZ+jet and ZZ+jet, however, the cross sections at Tevatron are too small, so only results for LHC are presented. The Monte Carlo generator developed in this thesis can be used as a tool in data analysis at LHC and Tevatron.

Precision calculations for gamma gamma -> 4 fermions and H -> WW/ZZ -> 4 fermions
