It is a specific embodiment of a spinor, specifically constructed so that it is consistent with the requirements of special relativity. Bispinors transform in a certain "spinorial" fashion under the action of the Lorentz group, which describes the symmetries of Minkowski spacetime. They occur in the relativistic spin-⁠1/2⁠ wave function solutions to the Dirac equation.Bispinors are so called because they are constructed out of two simpler component spinors, the Weyl spinors. Each of the two component spinors transform differently under the two distinct complex-conjugate spin-1/2 representations of the Lorentz group. This pairing is of fundamental importance, as it allows the represented particle to have a mass, carry a charge, and represent the flow of charge as a current, and perhaps most importantly, to carry angular momentum. More precisely, the mass is a Casimir invariant of the Lorentz group (an eigenstate of the energy), while the vector combination carries momentum and current, being covariant under the action of the Lorentz group. The angular momentum is carried by the Poynting vector, suitably constructed for the spin field.A bispinor is more or less "the same thing" as a Dirac spinor. The convention used here is that the article on the Dirac spinor presents plane-wave solutions to the Dirac equation using the Dirac convention for the gamma matrices. That is, the Dirac spinor is a bispinor in the Dirac convention. By contrast, the article below concentrates primarily on the Weyl, or chiral representation, is less focused on the Dirac equation, and more focused on the geometric structure, including the geometry of the Lorentz group. There is a lot there to respond to and in general I think the exchange speaks for itself. However, I think there are few points where clarification is important for the exchange to be productive, which I'll briefly address here. 1. Let me start with concessions. There are many points where @slatestarcodex correctly highlights various areas where my grasp of beliefs and facts are limited or wrong, especially in the depth of my grasp of the views of the rationalist community. I freely admit that there are serious limits to how much I've been able to research the views of people in this community and I certainly hope they are not as I characterized them, though as I will point out below many elements of Scott's response confirm my concerns.

Nobody holds rallies demanding more statism. There is no Citizens for Statism Facebook page with thousands of likes and followers. Yet for some reason libertarians don't win every single national election. Strange, isn't it? Maybe it’s one of those Russell conjugations - "I am firm, you are obstinate". I support rule of law, you're a statist. I want checks and balances on mob rule, you're an elitist. I like evidence-based policy, you're a technocrat. I am not defending technocracy. But I do like evidence-based policy. So I read with interest Glen Weyl's Why I Am Not A Technocrat. It starts with a short summary of Seeing Like A State. It ties this into modern "evidence-based policy" and "mechanism design". It talks about how technocrats will always have their own insular culture and biases and paradigms, which prevent them from seeing the real world in its full complexity. Therefore, we should be careful about supposedly "objective" policies, and make sure they are always heavily informed by real people's real knowledge. Then it draws on vague rumors of the "rationalist community" and a shadowy figure named "Eliezer Yudkowsky" to create a completely fictional reimagination of us as a group of benighted people who don't understand any of these things, and just go around saying "hurr durr top-down systems are great, no way there could possibly be anything our models don't capture."

Gustav Boeß von der DDP, der bürgerlich liberalen Deutschen Demokratischen Partei, wurde am 20. Januar 1921 zum Oberbürgermeister von Berlin gewählt. Da die Stadtverordnetenversammlung eine „linke“ Mehrheit aus Kommunisten, USPD und SPD besaß, ist die Wahl eines Kandidaten des bürgerlichen Lagers nur dadurch zustande gekommen, dass die SPD ihre Stimmen ihm gab und nicht dem Kandidaten der USPD Dr. Weyl. Dementsprechend beinhaltet der Bericht vom 21. Januar zur Wahl von Gustav Boeß im Vorwärts eine Rechtfertigung der SPD-Fraktion, warum sie nicht für Weyl stimmte, wohlwissend, dass die Presseorgane der Kommunisten und der USPD sie als Verräter beschimpfen würden. Gustav Boeß war die ganzen „goldenen Zwanziger“ über, bis 1929, Oberbürgermeister, bis er über die sogenannte Pelzmantelaffäre stürzte, bei der es um spottbillige Pelze für seine Frau mit dem Geruch von Bestechung ging, aber davon berichten wir dann 2029. Um einen Eindruck von damaligen Lebensläufen zu geben, liest Paula Leu auch die biographische Skizze des Vorwärts ein, die an den Artikel anschließt.

Quadratic Voting and Open AuctionsOne of our guests was Glen Weyl, the political economist and Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research New England, who co-authored the book “Radical Markets” with University of Chicago Law School professor Eric Posner. We chose to focus on just two of the many ideas that that book puts forward. One is quadratic voting, which allows people not only to vote for or against a particular issue but to express how strongly they hold that view by buying extra votes – up to a certain limit of assigned credits. The cost in credits of each additional vote increases by a quadratic formula. It's designed to help small groups of voters who care deeply about particular issues while still constraining them from overly skewing results.Weyl has also worked on a variation of the concept with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin called quadratic funding, which in theory could diminish the influence of wealthy “whales” in voting systems that are based on financial holdings or contributions. The second big idea we explored is that of perpetual open auctions. Here, every bit of property, including what we might otherwise think of as public property, is owned by private entities with the proviso that it is always up for auction and that the majority of the value created from it is shared equally among citizens as a social dividend. Weyl and Posner argue that such an arrangement would incentivize owners to manage the property well, and that the wider distribution of wealth creation would give a greater number of people the wherewithal to start businesses. It would also be easier to develop land for infrastructure, such as high-speed rail lines, because the developer could easily acquire it. Both of these ideas are rooted more in legal and process innovation than in software and distributed computing per se. But they intersect nicely with concepts associated with the crypto and blockchain space. One is the potential for self-sovereign identity models to prevent people from gaming quadratic voting. Another is the potential enhancements that smart contracts, non-fungible token-based property, and decentralized finance (DeFi) concepts such as automated market-making might bring to open auctions. Also, quadratic funding might fix free-rider problems in blockchain projects, Buterin believes. Smart taxationOur other guest was Jeff Saviano, the global lead of tax innovation at EY. He is a member of the Prosperity Collaborative, within which organizations such as the World Bank, MIT Media Lab's Connection Sciences lab and the New America Foundation are working with governments to improve transparency and efficiency in the collection and distribution of taxes. Saviano talks of how blockchain-based tracing systems might not only give taxpayers a transparent view of how their taxes are being spent but also incorporate programmability. For example, the actual, uniquely identified dollars that you contribute could be channeled directly and transparently into identifiable services that immediately benefit you and your community. Anne-Marie Slaughter is the CEO of New America, a think ​and action ​tank dedicated to renewing the promise of America, and a Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011, she served as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. Glen Weyl is a political economist and social technologist whose work focuses on harnessing computers and markets to create a radically equal and cooperative society. He is the Founder and Chairman of the Radical x Change Foundation, a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and a lecturer at Princeton University. Today, Slaughter and Weyl will discuss the recently released Roadmap to Pandemic Resilience, published by Harvard’s Edmond. Prof. Glen Weyl from Princeton University discusses ideas in his new book "Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society." The book was just listed in “The Economist’s books of the year” among many other praises. In this interview, Prof. Weyl explains how his vision could be a unique solution to many of our problems today, the role of blockchain technology in social change, and the future of Liberalism among other topics. Prof. Weyl is now a Principal Researcher at Microsoft and the founder of the RadicalxChange movement. He graduated from Princeton in 2007 as the valedictorian of his undergraduate class, and he received his PhD degree in economics at Princeton in the following year of 2008. Prof. Weyl is hosting the 8th Annual Conference for Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance from Feb. 21 to 22. The conference is titled "Radical Mechanisms 10 Years After the Financial Crisis." Pro-market economists love to wax rhapsodic about the capacity of markets to pull together the valuable local information spread across all of society about what people want and how to make it. But when it comes to politics and voting - which also aim to aggregate the preferences and knowledge found in millions of individuals - the enthusiasm for finding clever institutional designs often turns to skepticism. Today's guest, freewheeling economist Glen Weyl, won't have it, and is on a warpath to reform liberal democratic institutions in order to save them. Just last year he wrote Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society with Eric Posner, but has already moved on, saying "in the 6 months since the book came out I've made more intellectual progress than in the whole 10 years before that." Weyl believes we desperately need more efficient, equitable and decentralised ways to organise society, that take advantage of what each person knows, and his research agenda has already been making breakthroughs. Instead he has left the academy to try to inspire a social movement, RadicalxChange, with a vision of social reform as expansive as his own. You can sign up for their conference in Detroit in March here Economist Alex Tabarrok called his latest proposal, known as 'liberal radicalism', "a quantum leap in public-goods mechanism-design" - we explain how it works in the show. But the proposal, however good in theory, might struggle in the real world because it requires large subsidies, and compensates for people's selfishness so effectively that it might even be an overcorrection. An earlier mechanism - 'quadratic voting' (QV) - would allow people to express the relative strength of their preferences in the democratic process. No longer would 51 people who support a proposal, but barely care about the issue, outvote 49 incredibly passionate opponents, predictably making society worse in the process. We explain exactly how in the episode. Weyl points to studies showing that people are more likely to vote strongly not only about issues they *care* more about, but issues they *know* more about. He expects that allowing people to specialise and indicate when they know what they're talking about will create a democracy that does more to aggregate careful judgement, rather than just passionate ignorance. But these and indeed all of Weyl's ideas have faced criticism. Some say the risk of unintended consequences is too great, or that they solve the wrong problem. Others see these proposals as unproven, impractical, or just another example of an intellectual engaged in grand social planning. I raise these concerns to see how he responds. As big a topic as all of that is, this extended conversation also goes into the blockchain, problems with the effective altruism community and how auctions could replace private property. Athanasios Dimoulas is the head of Epitaxy and the Surface Science Laboratory at NCSR “Demokritos” and he gives us an update with the latest developments of new novel materials in nanoelectronics. The explosion of big data and IoT has resulted in a great need for energy efficient smart devices. Dr Dimoulas shares some of the problems and insights with their research on these hard to develop materials like graphene, Weyl fermions and others. He then reveals how crystals could simulate a “particle accelerator” and test some of the fundamental principles and assumptions in high energy, elementary particle physics and cosmology. This could result in discovering new interesting properties and being able to integrate them faster in electronic devices, capacitors and transistors, in the hope of impacting emerging Quantum Technologies. In this thesis, we investigate the gravitational consequences of theories in which the four spacetime dimensions of our universe are augmented by two spatial extra dimensions. More specifically, the focus is on braneworld scenarios, where our world is confined on a hypersurface in the higher-dimensional bulk, allowing the extra dimensions to be large or even infinite. Our main motivation for studying such models is that they could in principle be able to solve the cosmological constant (CC) problem via degravitation: the CC only curves the extra space, leaving the brane geometry flat. A major difference to the simpler case of a codimension-one brane is that here, gravitational waves can be emitted into the bulk, even at the 3D homogeneous and isotropic level, as is relevant for cosmology. Therefore, we first analyze the question how an outgoing wave boundary condition can be implemented, which is necessary in order to obtain a closed set of modified Friedmann equations predicting the cosmological on-brane evolution. We find that a potential tool from the literature, provided by a certain decomposition of the Weyl tensor - while being applicable to plane gravitational waves - fails for cylindrical waves. This failure is related to the fact that it is already impossible to locally separate incoming from outgoing linear cylindrical waves (on flat spacetime), as we demonstrate by explicitly deriving the corresponding nonreflecting boundary condition, which is nonlocal in time. We then consider a generalization of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model, containing an additional compact on-brane dimension on top of the one infinite codimension. Since here the 3D maximally symmetric brane emits plane waves, the Weyl tensor criterion can be used to exclude incoming bulk waves, and we derive the resulting Friedmann equations. If the compact dimension is stabilized, DGP cosmology is recovered, but we find indications that the stabilization should break down when the CC starts to dominate, which would lead to additional, potentially interesting late time modifications. If, on the other hand, the compact direction is allowed to expand freely, there are dynamically degravitating solutions - which, however, lack a 4D regime and are thus ruled out, as we demonstrate by fitting to supernova data. Next, we turn to the codimension-two version of the DGP model. By numerically solving the full nonlinear coupled bulk-brane system for cosmological symmetries on the (regularized) brane, we show that in some region of parameter space, a CC - but also any other fluid component - gets degravitated dynamically, and a static geometry is approached via the emission of Einstein-Rosen waves. For other model parameters, pathological super-accelerating solutions are encountered. The origin of this unstable behavior is traced back to a tachyonic ghost mode which is identified in this parameter region by studying linear metric perturbations around a nontrivial pure tension background. While confirming the ghost result on Minkowski from the literature, we gain the important insight that the ghost disappears if the brane tension is large enough, thereby reconciling the model with the physical expectation of a healthy low energy effective theory. Unfortunately, the healthy region is again incompatible with an appropriate 4D gravity regime, and therefore ruled out phenomenologically. The preceding analysis only covered sub-critical brane tensions, meaning that the deficit angle of the exterior conical geometry is less than 2π. In the following chapter, we investigate super-critical tensions (first in 4D), and find that the (regularized) static solution is no longer stable. Instead, the axial direction expands at an asymptotically constant rate, and the exterior geometry (which is necessarily compact) takes the form of a growing cigar. We are able to derive an analytic relation between the expansion rate and the tension, which - when adapted to the 6D setup - only yields a (small) constant shift in the CC, and can therefore not help with the CC problem. Finally, the case of two finite codimensions is analyzed within the model of supersymmetric large extra dimensions (SLED). First, we show that - contrary to recent claims in the literature - a brane-localized flux cannot help avoiding the fine-tuning (which is here imposed by flux quantization) in order to obtain 4D flat solutions, basically because only scale invariant brane couplings ensure a flat brane. Next, we ask if a more realistic model with a finite brane width and scale invariance breaking couplings could still be successful by predicting a small enough (albeit nonzero) 4D curvature, but find a negative answer: If the extra-dimensional volume is within its currently allowed range, both effects give way too large contributions to the curvature, unless the brane width were many orders of magnitude below the bulk Planck length, and again some sort of fine-tuning were invoked.

A total of 31,500 prisoners, most of whom were juveniles when they committed crimes, have been released under an amnesty agreement. The agreement was decided on last year by the top legislature and signed by President Xi Jinping. It was adopted to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Work on the amnesty was completed by the end of last year as scheduled. Among those released are prisoners who fought in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression between 1937 and 1945, and the Chinese civil war in the 1930s and 1940s. They are at least 80 years old. This group is very small and does not pose a threat to society; and the amnesty granted to the veterans is "apt recognition" of their contributions in both wars. The majority of the released had committed crimes when they were under 18 years of age and were sentenced to less than three years in prison. This group also includes minors with less than a year of their sentences remaining. To ensure that the release of every criminal was in line with the special amnesty, judicial bodies, including courts and prison officers, made great efforts to study criminals' files, examine judgments and verify prisoners' identities. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Researchers from China have discovered a 1,000 kilometer-long canyon beneath an Antarctic ice sheet. The canyon exceeds the US Grand Canyon in size; it is now the largest known canyon on the earth's surface. The canyon was discovered near the Princess Elizabeth Land. It is more than 1,000 kilometers in length and 1,500 meters in depth. The maximum width at the top of the canyon is 27 kilometers. This is the first time that any large canyon has been found in the region. Scientists have made three major scientific discoveries there, with the first one being the discovery of the canyon. The second big discovery is that there are numerous subglacial lakes and water channels, beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. These lakes and bodies of water are interconnected. The width of one of the lakes reaches almost 27 kilometers. And another was formed in a location where the thickness of the ice is over 4,000 meters. This discovery will play an important role in future research. The third key finding is that the temperature of deep ice in Princess Elizabeth Land is noticeably higher than in other regions. This makes it easier for the ice to melt. It means that lakes and other water systems form more easily than previously thought. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The top science and technology news of 2015 has been announced in Beijing. Sam Sanders (MCMP) gives a talk at the MCMP Colloquium (16 April, 2015) titled "On the Contingency of Predicativism". Abstract: Following his discovery of the paradoxes present in naive set theory, Russell proposed to ban the vicious circle principle, nowadays called impredicative definition, by which a set may be defined by referring to the totality of sets it belongs to. Russell's proposal was taken up by Weyl and Feferman in their development of the foundational program predicativist mathematics. The fifth `Big Five' system from Reverse Mathematics (resp. arithmetical comprehension, the third Big Five systen) is a textbook example of impredicative (resp. predicative) mathematics. In this talk, we show that the fifth Big Five system can be viewed as an instance of nonstandard arithmetical comprehension. We similarly prove that the impredicative notion of bar recursion can be viewed as the predicative notion primitive recursion with nonstandard numbers. In other words, predicativism seems to be contingent on whether the framework at hand accommodates Nonstandard Analysis, arguably an undesirable feature for a foundational philosophy.

Manifestly T-duality covariant worldsheet string models can be constructed by doubling the coordinate fields. We describe the underlying gauge symmetry of a recently proposed Lorentz invariant doubled worldsheet theory that makes half of the worldsheet degrees of freedom redundant. By shifting the Lagrange multiplier, that enforces the gauge fixing condition, the worldsheet action can be cast into various guises. We investigate the renormalization of this theory using a non-linear background/quantum split by employing a normal coordinate expansion adapted to the gauge-fixed theory. The propagator of the doubled coordinates contains a projection operator encoding that half of them do not propagate. We determine the doubled target space equations of motion by requiring one-loop Weyl invariance. Some of them are generalizations of the conventional sigma model beta-functions, while others seem to be novel to the doubled theory: in particular, a dilaton equation seems related to the strong constraint of double field theory. However, the other target space field equations are not identical to those of double field theory.

Thomas Ryckman (Stanford) gives a talk at the MCMP workshop "Influences on the Aufbau" (1-3 July, 2013) titled "What Carnap might have learned from Weyl". Abstract: There are easily discernible traces of the influence of Hermann Weyl in the writings of Carnap in the early to mid- 1920s. It is somewhat more difficult to find any palpable influence of Weyl in the Aufbau. On the other hand, Weyl’s 1926 Philosophie der Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften is the sole work singled out in Aufbau's Bibliography as “especially suitable for study of problems connected with construction theory” in both the “logical” and the “epistemological” categories. I shall argue that, in the crucial Aufbau passage (§176) “demonstrating” the non-constructability of the reality (as mind- transcendent) concept, Carnap may have had §17 of Weyl’s 1926 book very much in mind.

Shape dynamics is a theory of gravity that is generically dynamically equivalent to general relativity and yet sheds refoliaiton invariance in favor of spatial Weyl invariance. The different invariance groups has caused some puzzlement regarding the theory. In this talk, we will show how shape dynamics reproduce Poincare symmetry for a Minkowski-like curve in phase space. The asymptotic algebra is the same, but the charges for this theory acquire a new contribution to the energy that makes it Weyl invariant. The boundary conditions that allow for Poincare symmetry do not allow for a remaining conformal symmetry.

Gauge-boson pair-production processes with an additional hadronic jet are of particular interest as background to Higgs and new-physics searches at hadron colliders. Moreover, they enable---besides genuine gauge-boson pair production---a direct analysis of the non-Abelian gauge-boson self-interactions in the electroweak sector. In this work we provide precision calculations for the processes pp->VV+jet+X. In detail, corrections to WW+jet, ZZ+jet, and WZ+jet production are evaluated at next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling (NLO QCD). Particular care has to be taken when treating the infrared singularities arising in the virtual and real corrections. The FormCalc/LoopTools package is applied for the virtual corrections, where dimensionally regularized infrared-divergent integrals are added to the FF library which is used for the regular ones. The real-emission matrix elements are evaluated in terms of helicity amplitudes in the Weyl--van-der-Waerden formalism. The Catani--Seymour dipole subtraction formalism mediates the cancellation of infrared divergences between the two contributions. To perform the numerical integration a multi-channel Monte Carlo integrator is written in C++, which is designed to meet the requirements of integrating cross sections in the dipole subtraction formalism. For all gauge-boson assignments, the NLO QCD corrections significantly stabilize the artificial dependence of the leading-order (LO) cross sections on renormalization and factorization scales for Tevatron. For LHC, however, only a modest reduction of the scale dependence results unless a veto on a second hard jet is applied. Beyond investigating the production processes, leptonic decays of the gauge bosons are considered. To this end, a full amplitude calculation including resonant and non-resonant contributions to the leptonic final states, a simple narrow-width approximation (NWA), and an improved version of the NWA that takes into account spin correlations are performed at LO. Comparing these approaches the improved NWA turns out to deliver an appropriate approximation to the decays at a reasonable level of accuracy. Thus, an NLO QCD calculation to VV+jet including leptonic decays is performed in the framework of the improved NWA. Several results on differential cross sections for quantities of the jet and the decay leptons are presented. For WW+jet, we discuss both proton--proton collisions at LHC and proton--antiproton collisions at Tevatron. For WZ+jet and ZZ+jet, however, the cross sections at Tevatron are too small, so only results for LHC are presented. The Monte Carlo generator developed in this thesis can be used as a tool in data analysis at LHC and Tevatron.

Die nichtkommutative Geometrie stellt den ältesten Zugang zur Regularisierung von Ultraviolettdivergenzen der Punktwechselwirkungen in der Stöhrungstheorie dar. Dieser Zugang ist eine Verallgemeinerung der Quantenmechanik. Die Regularisierung erfolgt durch nichtverschwindende Unschärferelationen, die sich aus der neu eingeführten Nichtkommutativität der Ortsoperatoren ergibt. Zusätzlich ist das Ortseigenwertspektrum quantisiert - der messbare Raum erhält eine diskrete Struktur. Diese wird physikalisch als gravitativer Hochenergieeffekt auf der Planck-Skala verstanden. Der Bruch der Poincaré-Symmetrie durch nichkommutative Ortsoperatoren stellt die zentrale technische Problematik der nichtkommutativen Geometrie dar. Die mathematische Handhabung dieser Problemstellung ist aufwendig und wird im mathematischen Fachgebiet der Quantengruppen behandelt. Die mathematische Entwicklung hat sich dabei teilweise von den Bedürfnissen der Physik entfernt. Diese Doktorarbeit leistet einen Betrag dazu, Quantengruppen für die Anforderungen der Quantenfeldtheorie besser zugänglich zu machen. Zu diesem Zweck wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die Quantisierung der Poincaré-Algebra für nichtkommutative Räume mit kanonischen Kommutatorrelationen berechnet. Diese Räume sind äusserst populär unter Feldtheoretikern und verfügten bisher nur über Translationsinvarianz. Die Deformationen werden über einen notwendigen Satz von Bedingungen und einem allgemeinen Ansatz für die Lorentz-Generatoren bestimmt. Es wird eine zweiparametrige Schar von äquivalenten aber nichttrivialen Deformationen der Poincaré-Algebra erhalten. Die vollständige Hopf-Struktur wird berechnet und bewiesen. Casimir-Operatoren und Raumzeitinvarianten werden bestimmt. Desweiteren wird ein allgemeines Quantisierungsverfahren entwickelt, in dem die universelle Einhüllende von Matrix-Darstellungen von Lie-Algebren in eine eigens konstruierte Hopf-Algebra von Vektorfeldern als Unteralgebra eingebettet wird. Die unter Physikern populären Sternprodukte können damit generell zur Twist-Quantisierung von Lie-Algebren verwendet werden. Da die Hopf-Algebra der Vektorfelder grösser ist als die universelle Einhüllende der Lie-Algebra, sind allgemeinere Deformationen möglich als bisher. Dieses Verfahren wird weiterhin auf die Heisenbergalgebra mit Minkowski-Signatur angewendet. Dadurch erhält man eine fundamentale Verallgemeinerung der Quantenmechanik, motiviert als gravitativer Hochenergieeffekt. Nichtkommutativität wird dadurch in Abhängigkeit von Energie und Impuls gesetzt. Technisch wird dazu das Quantisierungsverfahren von Weyl und Moyal formalisiert. Die Mehrfachanwendung von Twists wird eingeführt.

Due to the singularities arising in quantum field theory and the difficulties in quantizing gravity it is often believed that the description of spacetime by a smooth manifold should be given up at small length scales or high energies. In this work we will replace spacetime by noncommutative structures arising within the framework of deformation quantization. The ordinary product between functions will be replaced by a *-product, an associative product for the space of functions on a manifold. We develop a formalism to realize algebras defined by relations on function spaces. For this porpose we construct the Weyl-ordered *-product and present a method how to calculate *-products with the help of commuting vector fields. Concepts developed in noncommutative differential geometry will be applied to this type of algebras and we construct actions for noncommutative field theories. In the classical limit these noncommutative theories become field theories on manifolds with nonvanishing curvature. It becomes clear that the application of *-products is very fruitful to the solution of noncommutative problems. In the semiclassical limit every *-product is related to a Poisson structure, every derivation of the algebra to a vector field on the manifold. Since in this limit many problems are reduced to a couple of differential equations the *-product representation makes it possible to construct noncommutative spaces corresponding to interesting Riemannian manifolds. Derivations of *-products makes it further possible to extend noncommutative gauge theory in the Seiberg-Witten formalism with covariant derivatives. The resulting noncommutative gauge fields may be interpreted as one forms of a generalization of the exterior algebra of a manifold. For the Formality *-product we prove the existence of the abelian Seiberg-Witten map for derivations of these *-products. We calculate the enveloping algebra valued non abelian Seiberg-Witten map pertubatively up to second order for the Weyl-ordered *-product. A general method to construct actions invariant under noncommutative gauge transformations is developed. In the commutative limit these theories are becoming gauge theories on curved backgrounds. We study observables of noncommutative gauge theories and extend the concept of so called open Wilson lines to general noncommutative gauge theories. With help of this construction we give a formula for the inverse abelian Seiberg-Witten map on noncommutative spaces with nondegenerate *-products.
