No matter what home we grow up in, we desire to be in the family of God. God is our true father and our home. It is easier to understand and accept that God is our true father if we grow up in a loving Christian home that points us to Jesus. If your Dad loves you, it is easy to believe that God loves you too, but if not, that journey home might never happen. Kevin Marino grew up without his Dad, who passed away when Kevin was young. As an early "latch-key-kid," Kevin had to figure out his identity without a lot of guidance. After some hair-raising experiences, Kevin finally found his way home to Jesus. “Hunting is Conservation” has become by far the most popular slogan in the hunting/conservation industry in the past few years. If you're a hunter, you're well acquainted with its meaning because literally any and all conservation organizations promote hunting as THE way to preserve and protect wild animals in modern times. But, what if hunting ISN'T conservation? I've personally never accepted the idea that hunting is the ONLY way to conserve an animal population, but I can accept that hunting is one of MANY ways to do so. Kevin Bixby is the Executive Director of the SW Environmental Center and recently published an article titled “Why Hunting Isn't Conservation and Why It Matters” and I asked him on the show for this episode to help me better understand what he means by this. By no means is this an anti-hunting article, in fact Kevin is a hunter himself and is the first to admit that hunting has played a key role in the preservation of American big game animals. That said, he feels the modern conservation model needs to change in a way that reflects the values of ALL those interested in the preservation of wildlife. If you're interested in reading the full article, you can find a link to this article in the show notes.I sincerely enjoyed picking Kevin's brain about the subject and I know that many hunters might fall out of their chairs just looking at the title of this episode, but I'd encourage those who have a vested interest in wildlife in North America, that they hear the message Kevin is putting out there and decide for yourself if you think the modern conservation model needs a facelift or not.Enjoy!By Land,Emory R. #KevinBeales is CEO of #Refract.ai. Refract is a canny technology that uses #AI to help managers and salespeople slice and dice sales conversations with prospects and customers. Imagine being able to break down every second of a call to understand talk time between seller and buyer, the kind of language used to persuade or dissuade a prospect, the verbs and adjectives, the use of silence or the propensity to fill silence with the sound of the seller's voice. These technologies are potentially incredibly useful for managers who can use the data to coach and deliver predictable performance improvement of individual salespeople. Kevin shares some of the frequently UNasked questions that CXOs should be asking but aren't. We dissect the gaps in management coaching capability that have led to the shocking statistic that in 2019 on 13% of sales teams worldwide hit quota and only 44% of individual, full time, "professional" salespeople hit their quota. As we face another downturn, it is more important than ever that managers invest sufficient time, consistently, in helping their salespeople improve. In particular, skills like prospecting, qualification and heading of stalls and put offs are key. But these tools can also help senior executives identify gaps in their management layer. If you are thinking about relocation or maybe just an expansion from your current business into a new market, the Pacific Northwest is definitely one to consider. 99% of business in Washington alone are small, making it into one of the highest percentages in the U.S., the same small business orientation is seen in Oregon. The continuous growth in this area demonstrates the strength of the economy, which is projected to keep its growth for the rest of 2019 as well as 2020. All the Pacific Northwest states are great for work-life balance, providing access to outdoor activities at the same time giving great business opportunities. The migration patterns are showing that younger workers are choosing this region, which is a direct benefit to small businesses seeking and finding the right employees with the right skills and experience for their businesses. Andrew and Jessica bring four of their franchisees to this episode to talk about the amazing opportunities in the area for entrepreneurs and small business owners. You may already be familiar with the Learning Business Maturity Model™, a simple yet powerful tool we created to provide a framework to help organizations assess the maturity of their learning and education businesses. And even though the model has been discussed in a previous episode, we thought it would be helpful to provide some additional clarity on exactly how to use it. In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Celisa and Jeff discuss how to effectively put the Learning Business Maturity Model to work to help you grow and improve your learning business. They offer a refresher of what it is and the three major areas of it’s application: dialogue, diagnosis, and direction. Full show notes available at https://www.leadinglearning.com/episode147. Across the broader business of learning and education, if there’s an area that hasn’t been tapped to it’s full potential – or even to it’s partial potential – it’s educational data mining and learning analytics. Dr. Ryan Baker, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania and director of the Penn Center for Learning Analytics, is known for his role in establishing the educational data mining scientific community and also founded the world's first Masters program in learning analytics. His work focuses on finding student data related to learning, engagement, or emotion that can be used today as well as to predict – and hopefully improve – future student outcomes. He’s published a wide range of academic papers and articles and has also taught the popular MOOC, Big Data and Education multiple times. In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Celisa Steele talks with Ryan about his work in the areas of educational data mining and learning analytics, the importance of understanding student engagement and disengagement, as well as intelligent tutoring systems and their impact on lifelong learning.
