IfG LIVE – Discussions with the Institute for Government

Announcing the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the prime minister declared that “we have taken back control of every jot and tittle of our regulation”. Regaining regulatory autonomy was a key UK objective in the negotiations. The question now is what the government wants to do with it.There is no shortage of ideas about how the government could regulate differently outside the EU. The taskforce set up by the prime minister to identify post-Brexit opportunities has made much of the ability to change regulation to better reflect the needs of the UK economy and promote innovation, and recommended reform in areas like financial services and life sciences. The government is now launching a search to find a director for its Brexit Opportunities Unit to "develop a cross-government strategy for regulatory change, while driving policy development on new opportunities across Whitehall."As our recent report, Taking back control of regulation, shows, doing things differently from the EU presents opportunities, but also brings potential costs and risks. To discuss how the government should think about regulation after Brexit, we brought together a panel representing a range of views:Bernardine Adkins, Partner, Head of EU, Trade and Competition at Gowling WLGJohn Foster, Interim Director of Policy and Communications at the Confederation of British IndustryJoe Marshall, Senior Researcher at the Institute for GovernmentIain Martin, Columnist for The TimesThe event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.#IfGBrexitWe are grateful to Gowling WLG for their support with this event See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

CUES 111: A ‘Nice Recovery’ Forecasted in 2021 Despite ‘Retail Apocalypse’—an Interview with Steve Rick

CUES Podcast

As is always true with the economy, there is both good and bad news at once.On episode 111 of the CUES Podcast, Steve Rick says some of the good news is that the jobless rate has dropped back to a rate of 6.3%, after spiking to 14.7% at the height of the pandemic shutdown last year.Director and chief economist at CUESolutions Platinum provider for executive benefits CUNA Mutual Group, Madison, Wisconsin, Rick says economists believe that 4.5% is the “long-run natural employment rate” in the U.S. He is forecasting reaching that rate again by the end of 2022.“We do believe we will reach herd immunity, probably by the fourth quarter of this year … where … 75 to 80% of our population has been vaccinated and is … immune,” he says. “So, we're hoping by the end of this year to have the unemployment rate down to 5.5%.”Some of the bad news Rick cites includes the hard hit taken by retail businesses during the government-mandated shutdowns early in 2020. Many stores, restaurants and movie theaters have been severely disrupted or even permanently shut down in what Rick calls a “retail apocalypse.” While those that closed may never reopen, there is a glimmer of hope here, too. In the January retail sales report, Rick says, “We saw sales pick up 5.3% compared to December. Now, that's a huge jump. … if we can compare this January of 2021 … to January 2020 … before the pandemic, we're up 7.4%. Now, that is a huge increase, 7.4% in spending. … So we're actually seeing a nice recovery already.”Rick projects a jump in gross domestic product this year of about 4.5 percentage points. “So we're going to be making 4.5% more stuff, if you will, then we did last year,” he says. “And last year … we dropped 3.5% in the production of goods and services. So, a nice recovery for 2021. “… if we get another $1,400 stimulus check sometime this spring, you know, if President Biden gets his 1.9 trillion stimulus,” he adds, “we could see a really strong economy going into the second half of this year.”The show also gets into:More on the potential impact of any additional federal stimulus checksIdeas about retraining workers to help counteract unemploymentThe huge surge in member depositsThe answer to a question from CUES member Cynthia Ryan, EVP/COO of Connect Credit Union, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, about how to handle the boost in liquidity from the increase in member depositsThe mortgage refi boom and how many loans to sell on the secondary market in these timesThe potential impact of any forgiveness of federal student loan debtThe importance of cost control and managing net interest margin right nowLinks for this show:Email Steve RickCUESolutions Platinum provider for executive benefits CUNA Mutual Group, Madison, WisconsinCU Management magazine’s monthly CFO Focus columnsCUES Advanced Management Program from Cornell UniversityPartial transcript for Episode 111

“Hunting is Conservation” has become by far the most popular slogan in the hunting/conservation industry in the past few years. If you're a hunter, you're well acquainted with its meaning because literally any and all conservation organizations promote hunting as THE way to preserve and protect wild animals in modern times. But, what if hunting ISN'T conservation? I've personally never accepted the idea that hunting is the ONLY way to conserve an animal population, but I can accept that hunting is one of MANY ways to do so. Kevin Bixby is the Executive Director of the SW Environmental Center and recently published an article titled “Why Hunting Isn't Conservation and Why It Matters” and I asked him on the show for this episode to help me better understand what he means by this. By no means is this an anti-hunting article, in fact Kevin is a hunter himself and is the first to admit that hunting has played a key role in the preservation of American big game animals. That said, he feels the modern conservation model needs to change in a way that reflects the values of ALL those interested in the preservation of wildlife. If you're interested in reading the full article, you can find a link to this article in the show notes.I sincerely enjoyed picking Kevin's brain about the subject and I know that many hunters might fall out of their chairs just looking at the title of this episode, but I'd encourage those who have a vested interest in wildlife in North America, that they hear the message Kevin is putting out there and decide for yourself if you think the modern conservation model needs a facelift or not.Enjoy!By Land,Emory R. What does the Eisenhower Box do?The Eisenhower Box helps you understand reality. When we have a lot on our plate, we begin to feel like everything is a crisis. The reality is that it isn’t. And that’s what this tool helps us see. It helps us course correct our emotional response to our workload. What does the Eisenhower Box not do?The Eisenhower Box doesn’t actually do any of the work for us, sadly. It just helps us know what is important. Let’s walk through the sample Eisenhower Box togetherContextHigh production life as a graphic designer in a churchProjects coming in all the time - some last minute, some not. No constant turnaround timesThe world begins to blur at this point, and the weight of the design load can lead to burnout. This tool works at every level of the organization. In this episode I explore the various ways to create the habit of waking up at 4:30 AM. I have always been a night owl. In high school, my mom would have to pour water on me to wake me up. As a seasoned night owl I always envied people that got up super early. I've tried over the years to commit to getting up 2 or 3 hours before I have to be anywhere, but it never lasted more than a few weeks at a time. Then I can across Mel Robbins. She's a motivational speaker and life coach that Kim turned me on to. She has a method that works well for getting up early. It's ridiculously simple but it works for me. Mel uses this technique for not only waking up but anything that she wants to begin or end. She calls it the 5 second rule. It goes something like this. When my alarm goes off I count back from 5 and when I'm done I get up out of bed. Like I said, very simple, but not exactly easy. The logic behind this is to take action before my brain has time to come up with excuses for not getting up early. My brain is amazing at rationalizing and coming up with perfectly logical reasons for not getting up. The snooze button seemed to be designed just for meUnfortunately, this is a slippery slope. I typically hit that button anywhere between 5-10 timesThe bad part is this is a horrible way to start the day. The first thing I'm doing in my day is procrastinating and it sets the tone. A friend of mine recently released his fifth album. The Infinite Calling is the name of his project and the album is called Beyond the Illusion. It's an ambient guitar project and although it's instrumental the songs tell a story. Dan really pushes the limits on what a guitar can sound like on Beyond the Illusion. You can find it at https://theinfinitecalling.bandcamp.com/ as well as Spotify and Amazon. Mel Robbins: https://melrobbins.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecoffeebuzz/message
