During the deluge of Hurricane Helene, over 30 inches of rain fell in the headwaters of the iconic Nolichucky River in North Carolina, falling on ground already saturated from prior rain. The Nolichucky crested nine feet higher than its record flood levels, wiping out almost everything in its path. Although the river experienced scouring and erosion, it was the man-made infrastructure that fared the worst. Among the losses were almost 40 miles of railroad tracks owned by CSX Transportation. Everyone wants the train tracks rebuilt, and the vital freight transportation link restored. But nobody could have predicted that the rebuilding project, contracted out to a company from Mississippi, would involve recklessly mining the riverbed, blocking tributary creeks, tearing up National Forest lands, and destroying one of the most beloved fishing and whitewater rivers of the entire eastern U.S. None of this had to happen. Agencies tasked with permitting and watchdogging this operation seem to have failed entirely. The public's demands for the work to be done in a less destructive manner have been met with silence. Sacrifice zones are areas where people have been left to live in conditions that threaten life itself, from toxic industrial pollution to the deadly, intensifying effects of man-made climate change. In a more just and less cruel society, the very concept of a “sacrifice zone” wouldn't exist. And yet, in America, after decades of deregulation and public disinvestment, more working-class communities are becoming sacrifice zones, and more of us are being set up for sacrifice at the altars of corporate greed and government abandonment. America's sacrifice zones are no longer extreme outliers; they are, in fact, a harrowing model of the future that lies in store for most of us if the corporate monsters, corporate politicians, and Wall Street vampires destroying our communities aren't stopped. And residents of different sacrifice zones across the country, fellow workers on the frontlines of all this reckless and preventable destruction, are connecting with each other, learning from one another, and working together to fight back. In this Working People liveshow, recorded on Oct. 19 at Red Emma's worker cooperative bookstore, cafe, and community events space in Baltimore, we speak with a special panel of residents from four different sacrifice zones in the US about how the situations they're facing in their own communities and their struggles for justice and accountability are connected. "CSX has got to go!" Industrially Polluted South Baltimore Residents March to "Evict" Rail Giant from Their Community

On June 10, in the working-class community of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore, over 50 residents, activists, and supporters from around the city marched through the streets of Curtis Bay to hold CSX Transportation accountable for polluting their community, homes, and bodies with toxic coal dust. Even after an expansive scientific study co-sponsored by the Community of Curtis Bay Association, the South Baltimore Community Land Trust, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the Maryland Department of Environment confirmed the presence of coal dust in the air of the South Baltimore community of Curtis Bay, CSX has denied culpability and called the study “materially flawed.” Residents say they're fed up with the company refusing to take responsibility for the coal dust, and with the city government for ignoring their cries for help for years, and they're not going to stay quiet.    “We got to stand together for Curtis Bay, for South Baltimore,” one resident and youth leader, Carlos Sanchez, told the crowd. “We have to remove CSX for the health of our communities.” With other locals watching from their porches, sidewalks, and storefronts, the crowd marched from the Curtis Bay Rec Center all the way up to the gates of the CSX terminal. There, they signed and delivered a giant “Eviction Notice” to CSX, a company that recorded over $10 billion in gross profits last year. About John Larkin, CFA John Larkin, CFA is a Strategic Advisor to Clarendon Capital. John Larkin was named an Operating Partner at Clarendon Capital in May of 2019. It was another year for the Pinellas Trail Challenge! This time we've got Matt Clapper, Katrina Pelican, Jeremy Hutson, and Shawn Eckert! Matt has run the PTC in 2021 for his first go at the race after overcoming a serious back injury. Katrina has run the race also in 2021! Jeremy has done the PTC four times now with 2018, 2019, 2020, and now 2022. Shawn is new into the ultra-running scene with this being his first trip to the PTC! Shawn has gone from 446lbs to ultra-runner! With an event like this, there are so many people in the community that a play a role into getting wheels moving and making the race the success it is. Folks like your Race Directors Kelley Hewett and Luis Gomez. Then you've got Brad Park, David Whiteside, Carrie Graves, Susan Murphy, Jeff Iosa, Sonja Craparo, and Staci Guten. All of the volunteers and local organizations from the eight aid stations, bib pick-up, the starting line, and the finish! Tonya Olson was your Medical Director; she's been saving feet at the Western States 100 for many years and was out at the Skunk Ape Night Run! The Pinellas is an Ultramarathon that runs the Pinellas Trail. The race is an out and back event that starts in St. Petersburg, Florida takes you to Tarpon Springs and then back to Dunedin. The length of the race is measured at just over 46 miles! The history of the Pinellas Trail goes back to Florida Railroad boom. The Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line railroads both served St. Petersburg and Clearwater for many years. They merged in 1967 to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. After the SCL joined CSX Transportation in the 1980s, 34 miles of trackage in Pinellas County was abandoned, and purchased by the Florida Department of Transportation. After voter approval, the County acquired the property and began construction of what is now the beautiful Pinellas Trail.

In the truckload market, John believes that the industry consolidation will continue. He believes that some of the larger carriers who currently have 1.0 to 1.5% market share could grow to have 3.0% or 4.0% market share in the next decade. The larger carriers often have an cost advantage over smaller carriers because their size enable them to get volume discounts. In the freight brokerage space, larger established players are buying up smaller companies and also investing heavily in technology. John also believes that larger carriers will be more likely to benefit from autonomous trucking technologies. The freight brokerages who have made big technology investments often have a lower cost per load, which means they are going to be more competitive or more profitable. Many freight brokerages are also partnering with staffing and technology firms like Lean Solutions Group to reduce their costs, while gaining access to talented people based in lower cost countries. A large number of logistics technology companies have emerged to help small and mid-size brokers keep pace with the larger brokerages who develop their technology in-house. In the LTL market, John discussed some of his favorite carriers like Old Dominion and talked about the difficulty potential carriers have when attempting to enter the LTL space. Overall, John believes that the transportation and logistics industry performed very well during the pandemic. The industry faces many challenges including inflation, war in Ukraine, re-emergence of COVID in China, potentially softening market, etc., so the stability and predictability we all hoped for probably isn't coming any time soon. About Brian Gorton Brian E. Gorton joined Conrail in 1987 as a conductor. He advanced to the position of Assistant Terminal Superintendent before departing Conrail prior to the CSXT and Norfolk Southern acquisition of Conrail in 1998. After his departure from Conrail, he worked at the Union Pacific Railroad where he held various positions in the Transportation Department including General Manager of UP's Houston and Gulf Coast Service Units. On April 19, 2021, Brian rejoined Conrail and was appointed President & Chief Operating Officer of Conrail Shared Assets headquartered in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, bringing with him over 30 years of railroad experience and expertise. About Conrail  Conrail is an American railroad company. It operates three networks—the North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit Shared Assets Areas, where it serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. Customers located along Conrail's lines have access to the national rail network through either railway. As a local rail service provider, it's Conrail's job to make sure that customers' freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long-distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern. CSX and Norfolk Southern handle all commercial matters for customers. However, Conrail plays a critical role in serving shippers and receivers as a service provider for our owners. Sustainability. Rail transport is more environmentally friendly and produces less greenhouse gas emissions than over the road trucking. Great option for high-volume shippers. A double-stacked train can move more freight than hundreds of trucks. Reliability. Trains run on a track and on a schedule, so traffic and weather are seldom an issue. Access to capacity. Many shippers use rail as an alternative to the driver and truck constrained over the road market. Intermodal shipping which utilizes rail transport is often the most efficient transportation mode for shippers, particularly high-volume shippers. The CSX 8888 incident, also known as the Crazy Eights incident, was an incident involving a CSX Transportation freight train in the U.S. state of Ohio on May 15, 2001. Locomotive #8888, an EMD SD40-2, was pulling a train of 47 cars including some loaded with hazardous chemicals, and ran uncontrolled for two hours at up to 51 miles per hour (82 km/h). It was finally halted by a railroad crew in a second locomotive, which caught the runaway and coupled to the rear car. In this bonus episode, we look into the state of passenger rail service in the United States by examining the history and current condition of Amtrak, the only choice for passenger rail service in the nation. The United States has a third world passenger rail transportation system. There's no denying it. There is only one company, Amtrak, that operates nationwide. Amtrak train cars are decades old, the employees are over-worked, and it's incredibly unreliable. But why is that the case? How can we do better? Passenger rail service is a worthy investment for the United States government. Trains consume far less energy than our other available modes of transportation: Passenger trains consume 17% less energy than airplanes and 21% less energy than cars. Passenger trains also burn far less carbon dioxide: The average intercity passenger train burns 50% less carbon dioxide per passenger mile than an airplane and 60% less than cars. Rail transportation is also a safe mode of transportation, especially when compared to cars; automobile accidents kill an average of 33,000 Americans every year compared to an average of ten deaths caused by accidents on passenger trains. [caption id="attachment_1443" align="aligncenter" width="598"] Automobiles kill 33,000 in the US every year. Trains kill 10.[/caption] But if passenger trains are such a good investment, why is the United States system so behind other countries? It wasn't always this way. In the 1920’s, more than 1,000 companies operated on a network of 380,000 miles of track in the United States. 1.27 billion passengers traveled on the United States' rail network every year, at a time when our population was much less than it is today. However, in the 1970’s, after the interstate highway system was completed and air travel became affordable for the middle class, the private railroads didn’t find passenger trains to be as profitable as freight and they wanted to eliminate passenger services entirely. The government agreed to take over the passenger service that the private sector didn’t want to provide for their own financial reasons. Amtrak was created in 1971 as a quasi public-private entity to provide public rail transportation service nationwide. Amtrak was a compromise between the members of Congress who wanted to keep a passenger rail system in the United States and the Nixon administration, who wanted passenger rail to disappear. In the deal that created Amtrak, the private railroad companies would no longer have to provide passenger services but they would have to provide Amtrak with start-up cash and equipment. The private railroads would maintain ownership of the infrastructure - the railraod tracks - but they would not be allowed to deny Amtrak the right to use them. The only place in the United States where the private railroad companies do not own the infrastructure is in the Northeast Corridor, between Boston and Washington D.C., which just so happens to be the area of the country with the best and most reliable passenger rail service in the country. However, Amtrak is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure; as a result, about 75% of Amtrak's budget goes towards maintaining the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak was given two mandates. The first was to provide a nationwide passenger rail service. The second was to turn a profit. While turning a profit is a worthy goal, no passenger rail service in the world is currently profitable even in countries where the passenger train company is not responsible for maintaining the rail infrastructure. The situation got worse for Amtrak in the 1980's due to the Staggers Act, which deregulated the railroad industry. As a result, railroad companies gobbled each other up in mergers and ripped out even more tracks. Since the 1960’s, almost half of the countries’ rail infrastructure has been abandoned or removed. Today, the vast majority of the country’s remaining railroad tracks are controlled by only four companies: BNSF, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific. Bills Discussed in This Episode Amtrak has been starved of funding since it’s creation, a problem that continues today. Amtrak needs about $5 billion just to maintain old bridges, tunnels, and walls in the Northeast Corridor, the only section of the country where Amtrak owns the tracks it runs on. H.R. 4745, the transportation funding bill for fiscal year 2015 which passed the House of Representatives on June 10, would not authorize that money, nor much else for operations in other parts of the country. H.R. 4745: The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for 2015 Provides over $15 billion in Federal subsidies for the aviation industry. Provides over $40 billion in Federal subsidies for the highway trust fund. Provides $1.2 billion in Federal subsidies for Amtrak. Amtrak is also authorized to borrow $5.6 billion. In addition, H.R. 4745 contains some outright fiscal attacks on Amtrak's ability to function. An amendment submitted by Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia defunds food and beverage service on Amtrak trains. An amendment submitted by Rep. Jeff Denham of California defunds California's high speed rail project. An amendment submitted by Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas eliminates the Sunset Limited, the only Amtrak route that runs between Los Angeles and New Orleans. There is hope, however. H.R. 4745 needs to be merged with the Senate version. There is still time to remove the Amtrak attacks. More importantly, the multi-year transportation bill known as MAP-21 is set to expire on September 30, 2014, right before the 2014 midterm elections. Emery, at the suggestion of his wife. Residents were reportedly looking for a shorter name than Farmington. Several popular but historically inaccurate explanations have been given for the origin of the name Novi. One version is that it was named after the 6th tollgate (No. VI) on the Grand River toll road. However, the township was named in 1832 and the toll road was not constructed until the 1850s. A similar claim is made about the township being stop number 6 on the railroad. However, the Holly, Wayne and Monroe Railway (now CSX Transportation) was not constructed through the township until 1870–71, almost 40 years after it was named. A third popular misconception is that Novi was the sixth stagecoach stop outside of Detroit. None of which is really true. I thought it was the interstate Exit WordPress 3.05 WTF?
