In ep 114 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Janine Cooper-Marshall joins Sam and Mark to talk about getting commuters from A to B without confusing or annoying them, we reveal the dragon in the room, Mark just keeps tripping over a place name and how you can be too Welsh and not Welsh enough all at the same time. Plus we get excited about bubblies! Our VO question this week is all about how you get a job on the trains (as a voiceover!), and is it tough to be in a niche?Get involved! She recorded her first voice reel with Bernard Graham Shaw in 2000 and somehow managed to impress him enough to be included in his book “Voice-Overs – A Practical Guide”, which gave her the confidence to launch herself into full time voiceover work. Since then she's recorded radio & TV commercials, eLearning modules, corporates, explainers, audiobooks… well, anything that requires a voice really. From a list of eight blind spots for the shepherd, the community went with the oldest film on the list. Perhaps as a way of mocking the age of the birthday of your host. "Kind Hearts and Coronets" is a dark comedy of manners that was release in the U.S. in 1950. Famous for Alec Guinness playing eight parts, it is a showcase for character actor  Dennis Price as the star. Three of the guests this week were old hands at this serial killer comedy, David Brook, James Wilson and Howard Casner had all been slain by this before. Only Matthew Simpson joined Richard as fresh victims of this drool Ealing product that is considered one of the greatest British films of all time. Set your headphones on stun because spoilers start flying immediately.

It's spooky season on the Lambcast, Halloween is coming and horror films are everywhere. We got a request a few weeks ago for a show that focuses on earlier horror films so it seemed like the right time for another draft episode.  This week we have some incredibly strange creatures who stopped living and became mixed up movie bloggers. There are a few reasons that we limited the entries to this time period. First, that was the suggestion from a listener that prompted the episode to begin with. A second reason is that I am looking for films that don't always get covered during the season. Let's try to broaden our tastes. Another reason is that 1973 marked a transition in horror films with “The Exorcist” breaking out of the horror ghetto and becoming a mainstream success. And finally, this limitation means that I don't have to engage one more time in an argument over whether or not “Jaws” is a Horror film. Aaron Neuwirth, Howard Casner, David Brook, Dave Anderson, and Todd Liebenow enjoy a "spirited" competition over their favorite older horror movies. Frankly, it is horrifying when the film you want is chosen right before your turn, listen to Howard scream repeatedly if you want proof.

Drive-In fare, Spaghetti Westerns, and French films fill the episode. Everyone was asked to bring 5 films to talk about today. How they chose them was completely up to the guest. Heather Baxendale Walsh dives into her Nostalgia Bucket, Will Slater goes for Neo Noir, Nicole Ayers likes Nostalgia in Genres, and David Brook has a rag tag collection of, well stuff. Richard uses his Laserdisc Collection once more to filter his choices. We only had two films overlap, and a quick substitution allowed a replacement, so there are 24 different movies on this weeks show. If you are a fan of animated movies, you will want to hear Will's choice on the exit question of the week.

Get your Kicks in the Bishop and Bear 66! With due deference to Bobby Troupe who wrote Route 66 (and not a lot of people know that), perhaps not even Joe Root who wears 66 on the back of his shirt of course.   What a week for Test Cricket, culminating in its own Super Sunday. Two incredible Tests, two extraordinary results. Three heroes in the form of Shamar Joseph, Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley. The latter, we think, bears an uncanny resemblance to the great Hedly Verity. Google some pictures and see what you think.   It really was riches indeed for Test cricket fans and on our Barstools of Bravado, your ursine landlord and episcopal barman are joined by two passionate and knowledgeable guests. Aryan Surana, our resident Guerilla news hound and the irrepressible David Brook, represent India and the West Indies, but take a refreshingly non-partisan view of events.   Fortified with rum and coffee, we dive not just into the two matches, but more importantly perhaps, the statement they have made in the context of challenges faced by Test Cricket generally. And we answer important questions like “How far is it from Old Trafford to Hyderabad? Just what was did the Windies put in Shamar's magic toe spray? And exactly how should we pronounce Visakhapatnam”?   For good measure, we tackle KP's tweet asking for people's opinions on the balance of T20's and Tests, so grab yourself a drink at the bar and settle in to enjoy the chat.   Cheers!   Your Ursine Landlord and Episcopal Barman Learn more about your ad choices. The thread binding together Shaylyn Romney Garrett's perhaps unorthodox career path - spanning diverse fields of research, writing, activism and social entrepreneurship - is community. "I've studied it, experimented with it, been fascinated by it, and been frightened by it," she says, adding poignantly, "I often feel that community is something I have thought more about than almost anyone but have less of than almost everyone." After a profound 3-year personal healing journey, Shaylyn experienced the wisdom in the old adage "If you want to go far, go together." In 2019, she decided to spend a year engaging in a series of radically simple but transformative monthly challenges to shift from "I" to "We" - 15-minute connections, meeting her neighbours and hosting dinner parties - giving birth to Project Reconnect. When suicide rates, bullying, loneliness and polarization are on the rise, Shaylyn believes that such everyday interactions are where we do the "heart work" required to transform our hyper-individualistic culture and reclaim the power of "We." Shaylyn is a co-author along with best-selling author Robert D. Putnam of The Upswing: How America Came Together A Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again, which has been acclaimed "a magnificent and visionary book," and "a must-read for those who wonder how we can reclaim our nation's promise" to once more turn the tide from "I" to "We". Her writing also includes uniquely revealing portraits of religious communities across the United States in American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us, which won Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson Award for best political science book of 2010-11. Her thoughtful opinions, writing, and research have been featured in numerous outlets including TIME Magazine, The New York Times, National Public Radio, BBC Radio, and the PBS Newshour. She is also the founder of Project Reconnect and a founding contributor to David Brook's Weave: The Social Fabric Project, an Aspen Institute initiative. Formerly, along with her husband, she co-founded Think Unlimited, a nonprofit in Jordan that helped thousands of young Arabs find their voice and their place as changemakers in their countries and the world. It won multiple international awards while also partnering with the Queen of Jordan. Shaylyn holds a BA magna cum laude in Government from Harvard University, and is a returned Peace Corps volunteer. She’s also a certified Holistic Health Coach, as well as a permaculturalist who loves to get her hands in the dirt, and thinks a lot about healthy soils as a metaphor for healthy human communities. She now lives in Southern New Hampshire with her husband James Garrett, their daughter Sophie and son Aeon, and their loyal dog Dewey (named for John Dewey, one of her favorite Progressives!) Join Shayna Parekh and David Bonbright for a conversation with this remarkable author, planting seeds for a new story of "we" in the garden of her own life and that of others.

It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, editor, filmmaker and blogger David Brook, who has chosen as his film the 18th century sea epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, while I have chosen the WWII drama, The Enemy Below, both films about naval vessels playing cat and mouse with each other.      And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is the attraction of cat and mouse films? Why did Peter Weir retire from filmmaking? Why did Dick Powell only make four movies? What do the context of the times when both films were made tell us about the films? Why did Curd Jurgens flee Germany? Where does Star Trek come in? How do both movies differ from the books? Why did Russel Crowe sell the violin he purchased to play in the movie?     Check out David's blog at https://blueprintreview.co.uk/author/david-brook/  And his IMDB page at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1986914/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_9_tt_0_nm_8_q_david%2520brook   Check out my blog at https://howardcasner.wordpress.com/   My books, More Rantings and Ravings of a Screenplay Reader, The Starving Artists and Other Stories and The Five Corporations and One True Religion can be found at https://www.amazon.com/s?k=howard+casner&ref=nb_sb_noss   Be sure to like, follow or comment on my podcast. And we decide that maybe we should have kept them on for something else. Come listen in and find out where everyone needs to expand their horizons.

David Brooke, Founder and Team Leader of Brooke Group Real Estate, has an interesting story to tell - one that is rooted in discovering oneself during times of hardship. A mentor dedicated to inspiring and empowering his team to be leaders in the real estate industry... he's either giving the best real estate advice or offering a dose of enthusiasm in the spirit of helping others.  From the beaches of South Africa, David was questioning what he was meant to be doing and felt he received the message. He tried his hand at construction then joined his father's appraisal business - attributing his success as an agent/broker to both of those experiences.  Since making that leap, David has gone on to position himself as the leader of his own vibrant, ever-growing team of energetic, knowledgeable and dedicated agents and staff as part of eXp Realty. His team continues to excel, having sold 585 properties, generating $188M in volume across CT, MA, RI, Florida, and most recently, Maine.   Which is why his team leads and succeeds by the example of "Each One, Teach One", because they believe that if you want to live levels of mastery in every stage of life, you're always learning for yourself and then teaching others.  Go to brookegrouprealestate.com to connect further with David Brook and his incredible team. To learn more, visit:https://billbymel.com/Listen to more episodes on Mission Matters:https://missionmatters.com/author/bill-bymel/

This is the sixth Decade Lookback Episode we have done, and let's just say it, 1973 cleans every other years clock so far. There is such a plethora of great films that "The Sting", "American Graffiti" , ""Save the Tiger", "Scarecrow", "Serpico", "The Last Detail" did not make the top five list of anybody on the show. It is such a great diverse year, that there was only one "Pineapple Kiosk" in the twenty five films that were discussed. And with Howard Casner and David Brook on the show, we got more non English language films than you can shake a stick at. It may take years for us to find as many films for a single show that people were passionate about. Dave Anderson and Todd Liebenow tried to keep Richard honest, but let's just say enthusiasm was everywhere. You should come and get some rubbed off on you.

Francis Ford Coppola had a good year in 1974. He was nominated for Five Academy Awards that year, and he won three but none of them were for the film he has always said was his favorite of his movies, heck it wasn't even his favorite of that year, and those awards came for Godfather Part II. Coppola's most personal film and the one he thinks is his best is "The Conversation" and you won't get too much of an argument from the guests on this show, we are all pretty enthusiastic about it as well. David Brook plays host this week as his pick for MOTM gets it's own Conversation.

What do you do when you always had a creative side that is ready to be fully expressed after 26 years in law enforcement? You retire to become a full-time artist. John Patrick Weiss is a writer, painter, cartoonist and photographer. In our discussion he talked about how his creative passions sustained him during his career; they became a refuge during stressful times. When I asked what he had learned during his career that helped him as an artist, his answer was discipline. John loves landscape painting and is recently experimenting with black and white photography. You wil hear him talk about ideas of where that medium might take him. Writing seems to be his main passion. This show was recorded live, and there is a 10 minute stretch where the streaming software of the host (me) went down. As the professional that he is, John carried the show by himself for that time. It is a funny interlude in the show. Episode Takeaways: 1. Whatever your passions are, go for it. 2. Paraphrasing from David Brook's book, "The Second Mountain," John tells us that the first mountain is self-centric. The second mountain is other-centric. Chase that second mountain in this next stage of life. 3. Be open to new experiences 4. Try different things until you find the thing that makes your heart go a-twitter. Thanks so much for listening.
