Anthropy is a major three day gathering for leaders. It grew out of the fusion of ideas for a UK ‘Davos', a ‘Glastonbury of Good' and a national ‘Ted talk'. In the latest episode of All In - The Sustainable Business Podcast, David Grayson speaks with the organization's Founder, John O'Brien, and Lucy Knill, Managing Director, who explain that Anthropy is in fact none of these but will combine the best aspects of thought leadership, creativity and inspiration together, in order for senior leaders and influencers from across the country (and the world!) to share and be encouraged to play their part in shaping our national narrative.

Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight

Business purpose made simple. Listen in to this podcast and hear Social Impact Pioneer William Buist explain the basics of business purpose and why we might be over complicating it. During this conversation William dives into business purpose and how solving big problems is at the heart of all businesses. Before he shares his practical ways to support teammates in their personal development. To optimise team performance – creating a road map for effective leadership. William Buist spent many years working his way up and through business. He has managed teams of hundreds and wrestled with the challenges of getting a desperate group of people in seemingly boring jobs to pull in the same direction and be passionate about their work. After a spot of trial and error – William discovered the power of purpose – finding out first hand that drilling into the basics of the problem your business is trying to solve for, can help bring everyone together, remotivate and energise. On his way, William saw a journey his colleagues were going on, a journey he has codified so that we can all learn from his wisdom. Listen in to hear how William explain how explorers can turn to novices, practitioners, experts and then masters. And how building teams of masters creates opportunities and resilience. This may sound lofty but be prepared for very practical insights into how to do create high performing teams and be a better leader. I stumbled onto the writing of David Grayson as I reflected on my (sometimes) daily reading of The University Library. Grayson's way of seeing the good in people and letting curiosity turn his feelings of urban oppression into natural wonder were inspiring. Open, curious conversations with people are kind of what this podcast is about.  So, I went on the hunt for someone to talk to about the guy whose method of talking to people was so inspiring.  And I found Nick Grabbe (grab-AY). Nick worked for decades as a journalist in Amherst, Massachusetts. Born in Washington, D.C., and custom-built to work as a big-city journalist, Grabbe turned to what he calls “simple living” in the small Massachusetts town he moved to. That's what Grayson himself extolled for many years in his columns written for newspapers in the early 20th century.  But, it turns out … there was no David Grayson. It was a pseudonym. Who was this Grayson guy? Grabbe will explain. And along the way he'll tell us about journalism and the appeal of a less hectic way of life—both of which held Grayson's attention, too, as you'll discover ...  More to see:  Want to learn more about a simple-living, small-town-focused journalist's career? Buy Nick's self-published Print and Privilege: Newspaper Writer Tells His Story (2021, Off the Common Books).  Do you want to try out a David Grayson book, or an essay or character study or two? David Grayson has worked in Corporate Responsibility before there was a term for it. As a former Proctor and Gamble employee, he has taken his skills from that world and applied to the third sector. Today he is an author, educator, and consultant. In this episode, David talks about how Corporate Social responsibility needs to move away from a lens of mitigating risk, to one of opportunity maximization. In this episode, he referenced a quote from Peter Drucker in which he said, “every global problem and social issue is a business opportunity in disguise”. That David describes as an aha moment for him. For him, he sees the Sustainable Development Goals as a purchase order from the future. The Business and Development Commission has argued that the SDG’s represent a 12 Trillion dollar opportunity. For him, referencing the work of Don Tapscott, businesses are going to have to get naked and when they do they will need to be buff. We are entering into an era of ultra-transparency. Companies will have to improve the standards of ethical and sustainable impact.
