Mint Primer | Tesla at ₹40 lakh: Will EVs now come roaring in?Modi govt's mixed record on corporate reformsTwo Raza paintings emerge from the shadows to fetch an eye popping ₹86 croreHow pig butchering scam is taking a toll on investorsAlakh sir, can PhysicsWallah ace the profit test? Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, March 20, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Tuesday saw the Indian benchmark indices take a downturn, ahead of a key interest rate announcement by the US Federal Reserve. Both Sensex and Nifty shed more than one per cent to end the trading session deep in the red on Tuesday. Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank were among the only few stocks to end the day in green. Are you an electric car enthusiast? Ever dreamt of driving a Tesla on Indian roads? In a surprise move Friday, a day before the model code of conduct came into force, the Indian government revised its EV policy. The new policy slashed import duty on electric cars in India to 15 per cent from the current 70-110 per cent, a massive reduction! But it comes with conditions. The reduced tariff is valid only for 8,000 cars per annum and can be availed only if companies make an investment of 4,150 crore rupees or 500 million dollars towards setting up a factory within 3 years. There is also a clause on domestic value addition.  So the policy requires electric car makers like Tesla to commit to significant domestic investments. Tesla plans to develop an affordable model for emerging markets like India. And we finally may have a price point for a Tesla model. It sits somewhere close to 40 lakhs. Mint's auto correspondent Sumant Banerji explains what the policy change could mean for global EV companies.   When the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014, one of the core ideas it championed was the ease of doing business in India. The previous regime's ‘policy paralysis' emerged as a strong pitch for the BJP. Now, after a decade in power, has the Modi-led government made any significant corporate reforms? Mint's senior assistant editor Niti Kiran takes a look, using data as her tool. Niti examines the highs and lows of corporate policy making in the last 10 years. These include the Modi government's banking reforms, led by capital infusion of more than 3 trillion rupees over five years between 2017 and 2022. Niti also takes a look at some of the not-so-successful policy decisions by the government - like 2016's insolvency and bankruptcy code. This is the fifth part of an ongoing Plain Facts series covering the top election issues and the government's report card after nearly 10 years in power.  Niti's story and other featured stories have been linked in the show notes. Just scroll down and click on the links to give them a read. “Money is not the criteria of art. Art or love is not a question of money. One should perceive these things at a different level”. What you just heard was a quote from the late great post-modernist painter Sayed Haider Raza. This is not an art history podcast. The reason we're telling you about S H Raza's art is because two of his famous paintings sold for an eye-watering sum of 86 crore rupees! Raza's 1959 painting titled "Kallisté" , which is Greek for 'most beautiful,' was auctioned off on March 19 at the renowned Sotheby's auction house for more than five and a half million dollars – that's close to 46 crore rupees. Another piece, "Paysage Agreste" (pey-saj a-grest), showcased at the Métayer-Mermoz (mee-tee-ye  mer-moz) auction house in Antibes (anti-bees), France, on March 17, fetched 4.75 million euros –  about 40 crore rupees. Mint's assistant editor Varuni Khosla reports on the auctions that made Raza relevant again, nearly a decade after his death.  Wake up folks! We have a new scam in town. Something called the ‘pig butchering scam' is targeting people looking to make a quick buck, especially students who tend to have little to no experience in investing. Mint Money's Sashind Ningthoukhongjam explains that the pig butchering scam isn't your average investment fraud. Here, scammers draw you in with slick, fake investment apps and websites, sometimes even using real app names as a front, convincing you to keep upping your investment. Just when you think you're on to a good thing, they disappear - along with your money. Brokers like Fisdom, Dhan, Fyers, and Choice Broking are sounding the alarm, issuing public notices to warn investors. And what's with the peculiar name? In the pig butchering scam, it starts with the scammer cozying up to the victim. Once they've got your trust, that's when they hit you for money, much like how a butcher fattens up a pig before it's time for the slaughter. Investors beware! PhysicsWallah, the face of profitable edtech in India, has been struggling to cover all its bases. The company, which began as a YouTube channel in 2016, has had quite the journey. Last year, it saw its revenue skyrocket to 779 crore rupees, tripling its earnings and landing in the rarified strata of profitable unicorns. However, it's not all smooth sailing. Despite the revenue surge, its net profit took a dive, plummeting 91 per cent to just 9 crore rupees. However, what are the signals that suggest that staying profitable could be a challenge for PhysicsWallah moving forward? Mint's startups correspondent Samiksha Goel spoke to students from across the country, as well as current and former PhysicsWallah employees to reveal a symptomatic, larger tale of decay that is evident in Indian edtech today. Students across the country, who enrolled in PhysicsWallahs prep classes for competitive exams say they have not been happy with the quality of education provided by the company. Samiksha also traces the company's origins, the controversies it has faced and how the company may be lacking with quality control of the teachers it hires.  We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. That's all for today. Thank you for listening. We'll be back tomorrow with a fresh episode of Top of the Morning. Have a nice day! Show notes:

I gave my students today their easiest and simplest 1 Crore a year plan. It was barely two lines. Way shorter than what I am explaining here. I said, sign up clients for 6 months. Charge them INR 5 Lakhs. And serve them your 100% every single week. Give them results beyond your expectations. And take just 20 clients. 10 in the first 6 months 10 in the next. That's it.  20 Clients x INR 5 Lakhs = 1 Crore ($125k USD). And I know, I get those eyeball-rolls all the time. So, don't worry. People often think I am speaking from the future.  But here's the math and the un-math both. First the un-math: I absolutely hate telling people to pay me for my time. Simply because I am bloody good at what I do. I have done it for ten years and in those years I have mastered what people cannot in fifty years. So yes, I charge for the result I guarantee, not for the time I give my clients. I problem solve and I charge.  And I teach my students exactly that.  Which is why, you must never calculate the value you are offering your clients as per session or per hour.  When people ask me: if I charge INR 5 Lakhs for 6 months, meaning 24 sessions (one session a week), it will then be INR 21k per session!  And that's where I stop them and ask them to GIVE UP session wise math. It's useless. My client often reach their goal by the 8th session. And then, I simply ask them: let's bring things to the table now that you didn't think existed when you first signed up imagining that it's going to take the whole of 6 months to resolve. Basically, now that the problem is solved, let's work on future goals. Now the math: I used to charge 21k per session in 2019. I wasn't a biz coach then. I was a regression therapist, helping people with any and every problem through the lens of childhood and intergenerational trauma work and family constellation. So, even if some of you, despite reading this email multiple times, will calculate session wise, I am still asking you to quote a price that is like 4 years old (and in a few months, five). Minus the INFLATION. It's that simple. The model is bullet proof. I am telling you. You don't need group programs, you don't need a social media manager, you don't need a website, you don't even need to exist on Instagram. 20 Clients. One year. Serving your ass off. One F*cking Crore. And now that you have the model ready, what else could get in the way? The answer is: your own mind.  What you believe about this model. What you believe about yourself and your skills as a coach. And what you believe about your clients. In this episode I give you all the necessary reasons, tools and the coaching your brain would need to make this model a blazing success. Enjoy Listening. And apply the learnings right away. Login NEWS Explained: The Digital Banking App Controversy That Landed Bank Of Baroda In A Soup The Bank of Baroda (BoB) has reportedly suspended more than 60 employees over irregularities pertaining to the onboarding of new customers to the bank's digital app, ‘bob World'. The suspended employees include 11 assistant general managers, who generally hold positions of area managers and zonal heads and oversee heads of over 25 branches, sources aware of the development told Moneycontr What Is The Row About? At the centre of the issue is a possible fraud while signing up customers for the internet banking app. In July, Al Jazeera and The Reporters' Collective in a report said that employees at some branches of Bank of Baroda linked the bank accounts of customers with unrelated mobile numbers and signed them up for bob World.  The mobile app, like most other banking apps, aims to offer customers an enhanced experience in digital banking in many aspects, including getting loans, savings, and investing, as well as features like bill payments and bus and hotel booking. The report said that the bank's employees, in order to meet the steep targets for the sign ups for the digital app, linked bank accounts which didn't have any mobile numbers with the numbers of staff, sanitation and security workers. Following the registration, the employees deregistered the bank accounts from the app and then used the same mobile numbers to link another set of bank accounts. To that end, one nodal officer was deputed at each branch to ensure the task was accomplished, the publication reported. While Bank of Baroda denied the allegations then, it ordered an internal audit into the allegations. It must be noted that in its Q4 and FY23 earnings statement, the bank said it had 30 Mn active users on the bob World platform, with a total of 53 Mn downloads. This grew from 19.6 Mn active users and 34 Mn downloads in the corresponding period of the prior fiscal year

The brain's job is to give us BS. Anything that seems uncomfortable or unfamiliar, the brain will simply try to dissuade us from that. That is why, in times of unfavourable circumstances - it tells us things like: This can't work out. It's going to be difficult. There is no money coming in this month. Things will be slower this week. I have to work harder to make things happen. If I am not present, no one is going to buy. These are just examples. But of the 60k thoughts we think everyday, over 90% of them are about why something can't happen or why it can't be that simple. It's always more about why something is not possible, versus why something is possible. And this podcast episode is a living testament of the latter. I was travelling through Europe, handling a health emergency of a parent, shifting houses, paying up over 40 Lakhs of expenses, not having access to my laptop or my office the whole of September 2023, and yet I didn't make that the reason to not make money. And I didn't make that a reason to not serve people. I did both and I made over $100k even this month. I want you to know how I did it. So that you never have to believe when someone tells you: this is going to be difficult. Remember, no one can ever tell you how difficult it's going to be. It's your f**king business. The song Naalone Pongenu Narmada in Surya S/O Krishnan was actually composed for Stalin movie but was not used.  December 15th, 2006 movie was officially launched in Film Nagar and then January 18th, 2006 shooting officially started  Annapurna, Ramanaidu, Padamalaya, Saradhi Studios, Military Camp in Delhi, and then two songs Siggutho Chi Chi and Go Goa Goa were filmed in Austria. Anuksha was confirmed as item song and it was big news back then. 2nd star hero movie after Super. And director Gopichand Malineli worked as assistant director for this movie, he's actually in the movie 31:48 seconds disabled girl montage asking for help he comes  In climax, Stalin was actually supposed to die but Parachuri brothers made the change in Tagore and he lives and they did the same for Stalin climax. To address the rumors that Murugadoos walked out of the project midway and Vinayak directed the rest, the clarity if Murugadoos wasn't available for climax fight shoot so VV Vinayak directed that episode. Similarly in Khaidhi no 150, VV Vinayak wasn't available so Chiranjeevi directed one scene.  August 22nd, 2006 Lalitha Kala Vedika in Public Gardens, Hyderabad audio was launched. Pawan Kalyan was the chief guest and Chirutha movie and Ram Charan first public appearance was announced.  Movie released on September 20th, 2006 amidst much fanfare with 550 theaters and 320 prints.  One of the most hyped movies in Telugu cinema at the time since Chiru had 2 average films (Jai Chiraanjeeva and Andarivaadu) in the last 2 years and just 2 hits (Tagore and Shankar Dada MBBS) in 5 years after Indra in 2002 and they were waiting for another blockbuster since he was number 1 at the time.  Even in USA, fans did hungama and movie had huge hype some dude Komati Jayaram bought the first ticket for $1116 dollars which is about 50,000 INR conversion.  Movie released but due to comparison with Tagore and high expectations, it finished as above average at the box office. Some scenes were really good but apparently not a great response to the songs which is shocking, and Trisha role was a big minus.  Sold for 30 crores and collected 15.5 crores share opening week which was an all time record and then at Prasad's Multiplex it collected 9 Lakhs gross in one day state record,  50 days in 207 centers, 100 days in 34 centers it ran and collected 26 crores share overall becoming above average. First movie to collect more than 3 crores in Karnataka and first movie to collect 1 crores share in Guntur back then  If the movie got hit talk, then it would have even another industry hit. And also 4 of the top 5 highest grossers at the time release belonged to Chiranjeevi: Indra, Tagore, Shankar Dada MMBS, and Stalin.

People will hate you for the money you make. They will dislike you for demanding. It will trigger them to see you thrive and embrace 100% of yourself — exactly as you are.  But let's ask: do people really hate us? I mean, to hate someone, to dislike them or to shame them for their expression, wealth, or their way of life … one has to at least know the person, right? And when people see us on social media, or read our WhatsApp statutes, or let's say an email like this, they only have access to a certain small segment of our life.  They don't truly know us. Infact no one can. Until they have lived our lives. Walked in our shoes.  So how come are their reactions towards us so strong? And the truth is: all of these people are hurting. They all have had wounds around money. They've been told way back in their childhood that they can't be themselves. They are socialised to believe that they must play small, believe less, fear the wealthy, and protect their reputation over their own wildness. I'll give you an example. When I went to the psychiatrist for the first time and he sent me to a counsellor (who was basically his wife), she said, “Gaurav, please don't people about your real identity. Don't tell them about your queerness and sexuality, if you want people not to hate you. You are studying to be a doctor, you must protect your reputation at all costs.” I was just 19. Imagine, what must have gone inside my psyche. The kind of fear, the kind of conditioning. It wasn't just that I couldn't be myself, but I was taught time and over again that I must also be ashamed of who I was inside. And that I must never let this monster out.  What happens in such a scenario? When you come across anyone who shows you those wounded parts; you hate them. Right? That is why homophobia exists in this world.  Similarly, there is xenophobia. When we cannot accept and absorb someone who is different from us. Just difference. In a world where diversity is the fundamental basis of life. So take it as given. The more you make money. The more you shine. The more you come out into the world exactly as you are, the more triggers will go through the roof.  There will be more and more people who will call you immoral, unethical, looter and out of integrity (I get countless such emails and DMs). This episode is an antidote to that. You will find the most radical and the most compassionate solution to approach this. After listening to this episode (and some of you have like to do that multiple times): you would never ever go back to feeling guilty for asking, for charging and for deserting the money you do. In other news: The Price of ATEPS goes up to ₹2.75 Lakhs on 1st September. Recently, I asked a question inside ATEPS. It was: how do you look at something you desire and you want to buy? Do you look at it as an expense that you will have to spend your money on and you start worrying how will you cover it, or do you look at it as an opportunity to create and have the money to buy them? And the reason I gave about asking the question is: whichever way you look at it, is the way people are going to look at your offer. In the recent two months, I have been through a 360 degree shift when it comes to spending money. I have begun to look at everything as an investment. And the reason is: every time I spend money, I am creating space inside of me to have that money. I look at this space and witness it as DEMAND. And there are two ways to look at demand. One is to panic and reel under the anxiety of how will I create the money? What if no one buys? And the other is to BELIEVE: I am willing to have the money to spend. I am willing to have multiple x of it. The fact that I have to spend is evidence of the fact that I can create it. At any damn time I want. And that is mighty powerful. This is exactly what I talk about in this episode, I promise it will fire you up. In other news: The Price of ATEPS goes up to ₹2.75 Lakhs on 1st September. Is it possible to make Rs. 9 Lakhs ($110000 USD) in a SINGLE Consult Call? We often assume that to make that kind of money it would either take us a super large audience or maybe a lot of different offers or perhaps months (for some, maybe years). But that doesn't have to be true for coaches inside ATEPS. Because here, we believe in ease. And we believe in ‘powerful serving.' Which is what I am bringing to you all in this episode with my student and client, Shruti Tibrewal. Shruti happens to be an intergenerational trauma expert and coach, and she recently created history by signing a SINGLE client, over a single Consult Call (of 2.5 hours) at Rs. 9,00,000. Which is $11000 (USD). Shruti is a master at constellation work and everything she bring to the table is through the lens of family systems and constellations. Listen to this episode to know how she achieved this remarkable feat. And know that just like her, you can do it too. Also, to know more about Shruti and her upcoming webinars & offers, you can get in touch with her on Instagram at @brainalignmenthours Things you will learn in this episode: Where do I get clients? (Answering the eternal question). The importance of a consult call (our willingness to experiment). What does selling powerfully mean? The inner work behind charging 9 Lakhs. The word challenge has had a very different meaning for me right from childhood.  As a queer child, growing up in the 90s, I have been a huge fan of Rekha. In fact, the first time I watched her movie, Khoon Bhari Maang, I was stunned.  There is a sequence where she is in like a dance challenge face off with the other villainous femme fatale, Sonu Walia — and Rekha literally burns the floor.  If you wanna watch that sequence, and have a sexy midweek dance, go to YouTube and type out: Main Haseena Ghazab Ki - Khoon Bhari Maang. So, coming back to the word challenge. It's always been about fun. And it's always been about breaking out of socialised barriers, thinking and doing out of norms, dissolving the heck out of system based oppression.  This is the reason the moment I finished medicine, I quit it and went on to make a million dollars being a brown, queer person, living in India out of an industry that had no name — at least in this country: Coaching and Therapy.  And recently, inside my Lifetime Business and Money Coaching Program, ATEPS, we hosted a challenge. It was called #2Lin2Weeks. Which meant, everyone who participated were supposed to make upto Rs. 2 Lakhs ($2500 USD) in two weeks time.  The whole idea was to break out of this socialised concept that: in some industries making money is hard. That you need to have an audience. That the product has to make sense to the existing people. That no one buys healing and coaching at a high price.  And we busted all of those myths. And in doing so, I went ahead and created a three part series with my students and clients who made the money. This episode part 01 hence is proof of the immense power of human thought. And the fact that we can create demand at will. It gets to be easy - for all of us. ATEPS, my lifetime business and money coaching program, now has a new home. On this episode, we talk to Prateek Shukla, Co-Founder and CEO at Masai SchoolPrateek is an IIT Kanpur Graduate, a Teach for India Alum and Ex-Founder of Grabhouse, a real-estate tech startup that was acquired by Commonfloor and subsequently by Quikr. He's a second time entrepreneur who is picking up his first love of teaching. India has 444 Million People that are in the 0-18 Years Age Bracket. That's 400 Million people coming into the workforce over the next 15 to 20 years. For them to be contribute to India's economic growth, we have a mammoth task of giving them the right skills. We have over 45000 College and Institutes in the country and you would think we are slowly but surely building capacity to educate and train the 400 million people over the next 2 decades. But, the grim reality on the ground that a large majority of students graduating from these institutions have NO employable skills. For example, of the 1.5 Million engineers that graduate, only 3% secure high paying technology jobs. The situation is even worst in Business and Humanities courses. The education industry is a money-making, recession proof business that's being run purely on the fact that every parent wants their kid to hold a ‘degree'. It doesn't matter if it's useful or not, the societal shame from not having one is good enough reason to pour money into getting your child through college for 3 to 4 years. The lack of employable talent coming out of college is HUGE problem to solve if we want to achieve The Indian Dream of becoming a large developed economy with a high per capita income. And to solve this problem, whatever we done so far isn't working. The core reason why colleges suck in India is because there's no incentive alignment. The college gets their fees regardless of the fact that the student might not even get a decent job after graduating. But, what if colleges got paid only after the graduating students earned. And that's where I find the model of Outcome driven education or Income Share Agreements very very interesting. It's a model where the institute only gets paid after students start earning a baseline salary. What this also does is it opens up education to talented students who previously who couldn't afford high fees of these colleges. On the episode today, we have Prateek Shukla, Co-Founder and CEO of Masai School who is pioneering the Income Share Agreement or outcome driven model of education India. Masai is a 3 year old startup that helps students learn coding for free in a 6 months, military style coding bootcamp. They work with students with no coding or computer science background, and train them through their rigouros program. They have an income share agreement where they can make up to 3 Lakhs as a cost for the education, only and only if the students get a salary of more than 5 Lakhs per annum. There's no doubt Vocational Training is key to make large sections of society employment ready and productive. Only on the back of skilled talent, can you build large industries that contribute significantly to the GDP of the country. We've seen this play out in China where they used skilled labor and technology to build the world's Manufacturing hub.For India, a similar opportunity lies in being the Software hub of the world. And for that to happen, we need to train millions of students every year. Over the next 50 minutes, I talk to Prateek about the thesis behind Masai School, how they teach students, what are the execution challenges of training 7000 Students, and about their partnership with National Skill Development Coloration.
