In this episode, Zil and K-Libra sigh beleaguredly with Pesimist about yet another controvery surrounding FA's new Content Policy, this time as it relates to babyfurs & ABDLs, as well as Luffy spouting off bizarre republican-like pro-life rhetoric about fertilized eggs being minors... About 15 years ago, frustrated by his inability to persuade his leaders at the time to use real language when communicating financial results, Apella's Andrew Brown tried to find other firms that offered inspiration. Depressingly, he could only really find one. But what a one! This CEO of a rising star of the FTSE250 (which would eventually become a FTSE50) had that year opened his CEO statement by saying that "it had been a difficult year which would require explanation and context, but he recognised that too many readers don't get beyond para three so here is a helpful list of six things you really need to know." It was so refreshing. A couple of years later he described the previous 12 months as “the year of the chameleon: quite useful in that they eat insects, but challenging and a bit fickle”. One year he said that high on his list of worries was the firm not achieving specific financial ratios but second was having a garage full of stuffed toys if a marketing campaign failed. Third, was his wife getting pregnant. He's also compared results to baked potatoes, pavlovas and seedless watermelons. He also liked quoting Dickens every now and again. That CEO was Henry Engelhardt. He co-founded Admiral Insurance Group and now joins us on The Little Questions podcast alongside Apella Advisors partners Andrew Brown and Jenny Scott. You can get in touch by emailing podcast@apellaadvisors.com and please consider leaving us a review. Find out more at apellaadvisors.com. Andrew Brown, formerly Director of Communications and Public affairs at Ageas Insurance, Andrew has more than ten years' experience leading the corporate affairs functions for global, listed, multifaceted firms across a range of regulated and unregulated sectors. Depressingly, this episode mainly reflects what's dominating the news, the headlines and indeed social media and, it's Farage. The man is everywhere, like a stain you simply can't get rid off, partly because Sunak et al have pandered to him for years. Marina and Jemma delve into how quite long he's been disrupting from the side-lines with some extraordinary clips to illustrate. Meanwhile, the Reform manifesto (contract) has been announced and it's holier than a piece of Emmental - fiscal black holes all over the shop. So why do people buy it? With so many people turning to Reform it warrants discussion and means no one is entirely sure who the real opposition will be post election. Then we look at the latest spat of strange AI images created for 'patriotic' reasons by right -wingers though the Trawl ladies think it might be a case of 'too much time on their hands.' They've mainly been inspired by the Trooping of The Colour and Alison Pearson might have had the worst take of all. Some great under rated tweets and clips finish off the ep and pudding is superb and very fitting and is by Larry and Paul and the Broken News team. FOLLOW UP: WELSH 20MPH LIMIT TO NOW BE ENFORCEDThe Welsh Government has stated that the newly introduced default 20mph speed limit, for built up areas, will be enforced from this month onwards. Depressingly, the article we link to, on the BBC News site which you can read by clicking here, has several quotes making it explicit that in Wales at least, compliance equals safety. Speed cameras will be installed in areas where it is deemed that too many are breaking the limit, rather than where there are accident blackspot as has been the norm. DECEMBER AND FULL YEAR NEW CAR REGISTRATIONSOnce again we note so many have trouble with the difference between new car registrations and sales. They are not the same. The good news is that registrations rose 17.9% on 2022, but still it is way down on the Before Times, approximately 17.5% down. We always need to put these figures into context. A lot of positive fuss was made about the volume of battery electric cars (BEV) which is impressively up, but the percentage of those registered is down for both December and 2023. Some of this may be due to holding back vehicles with 2024 and the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate about to land. More of a concern will be Private registrations that fell 14% for December and 0.1% for the year. Fleet is doing all the heavy lifting now. However, the inevitable calls for incentives and/or subsidies for private buyers has started. Click this link to the SMMT article for more information. I regret to inform you that we are all officially the frog that has been plunked into the pot of exponentially warming waters of an economic panopticon. One that poses incalculable risks to privacy, free speech, and private property. Depressingly, this is already a forgone conclusion…you don't have a choice in the matter. According to a Deloitte Report from last year, “The UK has one of the poorest rates of social mobility in the developed world. This means that people born into low-income families, regardless of their talent, or their hard work, do not have the same access to opportunities as those born into more privileged circumstances”. Charities like The National Tutoring Programme, the National Access programme, the Sutton Trust, The Social Mobility Foundation, Career Ready, UpReach are working hard to support young people in difficult circumstances. However, we are unlikely to see any transformational change without political will, finances, a joined up approach between the government, private sector and charities. And of course a mindset change.A couple of weeks back I had two members of the Career Ready Youth Advisory Board on my podcast. For those who don't know Career Ready, it is the national social mobility charity founded in 2002 to boost social mobility by empowering young people and giving their talents a platform to flourish. Career Ready now has a network of 1000 employer supporters, 3500 volunteers and have have so far reached over 200000 young people including supporting 30000 young people on its high impact Career Ready post-16 programme. Both my guests Victoria Ayodeji and Marley Ahmed are highly self motivated, are on the path to great career journeys and deeply committed to giving back. And they are involved with various initiatives which support them in this ambition. Essentially these Gen Z social mobility advocates and role models, believing in walking the talk. When I did a rent (and invest) vs. buy analysis back in January 2021 with a 2.6% interest rate, the results were pretty neck-and-neck. As rates climbed this year, I figured it would be fun (I'm using the word “fun” loosely) to revisit the exact same scenario with the higher rate. Depressingly, when we recorded this episode just last week, the rate was 5.95%. In the course of a single week, it's now surpassed 7% as of publish (9/27/2022). How have the rates changed the math now and how does one realistically budget for a median home in the US today with 6+% 30-year fixed rates? Let's find out. I'm also joined by Andy Taylor, VP & GM of Credit Karma Home (https://www.creditkarma.com/) to discuss breakeven costs, refinancing, and borrowing against home equity. Depressingly relentless waves of the COVID-19 pandemic continued to wreak havoc around the world in 2021, which made it difficult and often impossible to regularly do the kind of on-the-ground reporting that we pride ourselves on here at TRNN. But the news didn't stop, and neither did we. Even if we couldn't cover them in person, our expansion of audio reporting at TRNN allowed us to intimately cover this year's most important stories and to bring you the voices of people on the front lines of the fight for a better world. In this special year-in-review episode of The Real News Network podcast, Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez and TRNN's resident radio legend Marc Steiner discuss the importance of audio reporting and the projects we're working on for 2022. They also recount some of the highlights from our coverage this past year on The Marc Steiner Show, Working People, and TRNN's other podcast offerings, including: the fall of Kabul to the Taliban; the fight for Indigenous land at Fairy Creek; Jewish activists around the world speaking out against the Israeli occupation; strikes at Kellogg's, Warrior Met Coal, Frito-Lay, and more; and the introduction of our new TRNN podcast Art for the End Times.Read the transcript of this podcast: https://therealnews.com/from-kabul-to-the-alabama-coal-mines-our-year-in-podcastsPre-Production/Studio: Dwayne GladdenPost-Production: Stephen FrankHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stGet The Marc Steiner Show updates: https://therealnews.com/up-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Gavan was joined by Historian and host of the Three Castles Burning Podcast Donal Fallon to discuss the Monaghan Asylum Opera this week. In recent weeks, an Opera has taken to the stage of the Abbey Theatre, telling the unlikely story of an Asylum in Monaghan which was taken over by its staff - who proclaimed a Soviet. The hospital still exists in Monaghan today - but the event, mostly forgotten until brought back to the stage, was international news in its day. They are exciting times in the Abbey Theatre - with some new faces, like Executive Director Mark O'Brien, brought in from the thriving Axis Theatre in Ballymun. The reopening of our theatres in recent times - like the return of live music - brought a degree of normality into our lives, of course time will tell how much of that remains, but a return of bums to seats in the National Theatre lifted spirits. And amidst the programming of recent weeks was Elsewhere, which told the story of the so-called ‘Monaghan Soviet' - predating the more famous takeover of Limerick City, what occurred in Monaghan in late January 1919 was the first significant such event in Ireland - and, as we will hear today, it was news internationally, with plenty of exaggerated headlines on the other side of the Atlantic. Against the backdrop of world events, words can enter popular usage. Depressingly,Merriam-Webster gave the 2020 word of the year to 'Pandemic', as did dictionary.com. But, in the world of late 1917, 1918 and onwards, one of the words that had entered mainstream consciousness - and which was bandied about on all sides - was Soviet. As a noun, it means “an elected local, district, or national council in the former Soviet Union.” Some in the press spoke with fear of the idea of ‘Soviets' emerging amongst disgruntled workers, but others used the word positively - from the Labour Party to the unions. Authentically Russian. Depressingly bleak, a touch of divinity and more than a little strange.'The Death Of Ivan Ilyich' by Leo Tolstoy is a collection of 11 novellas, which contain Russian everything (characters, landscape, traditions, culture, etc.,). There is no connecting theme in the stories but they do contain some commonalities. They're told from an outside narrator, have men as the principal characters, contain multiple references to Russian words or Arabic influences and are about everyday interactions.I summarised the book as follows. "These are probably the easiest way to introduce yourself to Tolstoy's 'realistic fiction' without having to commit to an 800+ page book like Anna Karenina or War & Peace. I've never been to Russia but this conforms to most of what I have heard elsewhere about their traditions and culture. There is a strong emphasis on the bleakness and suffering in life, but hey, that's just how Russians roll."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Low-energy episode this week, as I'm snowed in, but hey, George finished Control! I started Ys IX: Monstrum Nox! There was some news on the horizon when this was recorded, so we attempted to predict what it would be. It was, uhhh... Depressingly accurate, it turns out. Then, in Retro Corner, George played some Mickey Mouse games for Children. Magical Quest, The Great Circus Mystery, and Mickey Mania, to be specific. You know, David Jaffe worked on Mickey Mania. That was before he went on to greener pastures, creating such beloved franchises as Twisted Metal, God of War, Calling All Cars, and Drawn to Death. I don't know what he's up to now. He doesn't return my calls. Theme song by David Cassel Outro music: "Dynamite" by Dr. Casper Darling
Happy Galentine's, Happy Valentine's and indeed Happy Any Day! To celebrate all things lovely and funny, today's episode is a celebration of rom-coms. I'm joined on my Zoom by two brilliant writers of funny love stories: Laura Jane Williams is the author of OUR STOP (the international 2019 hit), and two other novels, THE LOVE SQUARE (2020) and THE LUCKY ESCAPE (publishing June 2021). Abigail Mann is the author of THE LONELY FAJITA (winner of the Comedy Women in Print Unpublished Prize) and THE SISTER SURPRISE (publishing in March 2021). Laura and Abigail conveniently have completely opposite methods. We talk about whether their books are heavier on the rom or the com, how to go from a blank page to a finished novel, and how their writing has changed over lockdown. Hope you enjoy! If you do, pls do the usual: like, subscribe, review, tell a friend, and MAKE MY DAY at @lily_lindon, @bookymcbookface, or @witlitpod. Lily xoxo PS. This was recorded in December 2020. Depressingly, the lockdown references are still relevant. PPS. Please could a spelling bee somewhere tell me whether it’s meant to be Rom Com, romcom, rom-com, or something else entirely?

As the Israeli Air Force bombed Gaza last week, killing several Palestinians and wounding many others, a tweet from the United Nations envoy for the Middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, neatly summarised the gross distortions of the way Israel’s criminal occupation is so often presented to the world. “Everyone in Gaza needs to step back from the brink”, wrote Mladenov, thus repeating, yet again, the tired old lie of moral equivalence between an occupying force and the resistance forces opposing it. Depressingly, it seems nothing ever changes for the long-suffering Palestinians. Yet many commentators believe the Israeli massacre of 60 Palestinians on May 14th may yet prove to be a historical turning point in the struggle for Palestinian national liberation. Palestinian-American human rights lawyer, activist and writer, Noura Erakat, spoke to Alex Whisson on the back of her Australian speaking tour.
More hacked documents from within the Democratic Party were released by Guccifer 2.0. The latest batch includes a memo informing Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) staff how to handle the Black Lives Matter movement. Depressingly, it informs staff to not endorse any specific policy situations called for by the civil rights group. And Americans view labor unions more positively. That’s good news for non-union workers who, according to a study, would see their pay increase if more Americans were unionized. We talk with one of the co-authors of that study, Washington University Sociologist Jake Rosenfeld. Finally, the Fifteenth anniversary of 9/11 is around the corner. And--just in time for it--President Obama extended the State of Emergency declared by George W. Bush in September 2001. We discuss the extension in a Classified Session.
