Nick Mott is an award-winning multimedia journalist who lives in Livingston, Montana. His latest project is a wonderful new podcast called The Wide Open, which he produced in collaboration with Montana Public Radio and the Montana Media Lab. The podcast offers a fresh look into our ever-changing relationship with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and it digs into the history, nuance, and modern-day controversies surrounding what has been called “the most powerful environmental legislation in the world.” Nick explores this devisive topic with deep curiosity and journalistic integrity, and I found the podcast to be amazingly educational and entertaining– which is a rare combo when discussing such a complex piece of legislation. If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, then many of the topics Nick explores in The Wide Open will be of great interest– grizzly bears, wolves, the environmental history of the West, and more. You'll also hear a few familiar voices, including past podcast guest and living legend Doug Peacock. But what I most appreciated about The Wide Open is how Nick was able to humanize the stories surrounding such a divisive part of Western culture– he features people who love the ESA and people who hate it, but all of them are given the opportunity to share their stories and unique outlooks. In this current cultural moment of hot takes, outrage, and misinformation, The Wide Open is a much-needed return to nuance, curiosity, and civility. As you'd expect from an award-winning podcaster, Nick knows how to tell a great story, so I know you'll enjoy this episode. We start out discussing the history of the ESA and Nick's fresh approach to exploring such a well-known environmental story. We discuss how the ESA is used as a tool to achieve goals other than species protection, how Nick balances the need to make his podcasts both informative and fun to listen to, how he accounts for his own personal biases when telling stories, and how he goes about choosing people to interview. About halfway through the episode, Nick recounts a horrifying recent run-in he had with a grizzly bear, and he discusses how that close call affected his thinking on some of these complex wildlife issues. We also discuss his favorite books, plans for future seasons of The Wide Open, how he deals with negative feedback, wolf reintroduction in Colorado, his professional heroes, and much more. Be sure to check out the episode notes for links to everything, including Nick's other podcasts and his book "This is Wildfire," which he co-authored with Justin Angle. A big thanks to Nick for taking the time, thank you for listening, and please subscribe to The Wide Open– I know you'll really enjoy it! --- Nick Mott The Wide Open "This is Wildfire" by Nick Mott and Justin Angle --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 3:50 - What attracts Nick to specific stories or topics? 6:30 - Nick describes his new approach to examining the ESA. 8:30 - A brief history of the ESA 11:35 - Using the ESA as a tool to save species OR achieve other goals 16:00 - How Nick chooses people to interview and include on the podcast 19:15 - Balancing telling stories that are both entertaining and substantive 22:50 - Accounting for bias in journalism 24:45 - Why Nick includes his own story in the podcast narrative 27:30 - Introvert or extrovert? 28:50 - Did Nick change his mind on anything related to the ESA? 31:30 - How the internet has inflamed the divisiveness of the ESA 33:00 - Nick's recent terrifying encounter with a grizzly 39:00 - The psychological aftermath of the grizzly scare 44:45 - Providing a framework for thinking about wolf reintroduction in Colorado 49:00 - People Nick admires 53:00 - What type of journalism does Nick like the best? 55:00 - Future seasons of The Wide Open? 56:45 - People Nick admires 1:00:00 - Favorite books 1:02:00 - Dealing with negative feedback 1:04:00 - Parting words of wisdom --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Doug Peacock is a legendary environmentalist, writer, filmmaker, and grizzly bear advocate. He's the co-founder of two conversation nonprofits– Round River Conservation Studies and Save the Yellowstone Grizzly. Doug was also the inspiration for the character George Washington Hayduke in his friend Edward Abbey's classic novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang." And to top it all off, he is the author of many classic books, including "Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness" and his most recent award-winning book "Was it Worth It? A Wilderness Warrior's Long Trail Home," published by Patagonia Books. - Doug was born and raised in Michigan, where he grew up obsessed with nature and the outdoors. As a young man, he was drafted into the Vietnam War, where he served as a Green Beret combat medic, an experience that placed him squarely in the middle of devastating violence toward his fellow soldiers, as well as civilian men, women, and children. In 1968, he returned home from Vietnam spiritually broken, mentally unwell, and physically debilitated with malaria. Not knowing where to turn, he headed deep into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park by himself, where he formed an unlikely bond with the Yellowstone Grizzly Bear. Eventually, he recovered both physically and mentally and, to this day, he credits the grizzly with saving his life. He has spent the last half-century repaying his debt to the grizzly bear, aggressively fighting for their protection and recovery in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and beyond. - I met up with Doug in Aspen, Colorado, where he was in town for a reading of "Was it Worth It?" at Aspen's only bookstore, Explore Booksellers. Even though I could've talked with Doug for many hours, we managed to jam a lot of stories into this conversation. Some of the topics we discussed include: Why Doug does not carry a gun in grizzly country; why it is important for humans to love and protect a creature as powerful, even dangerous, as a grizzly; his friendships with Edward Abbey, Yvon Chouinard, Jim Harrison, and others, and how each of those high-voltage personalities helped to elevate the others; the death and secret burial of Edward Abbey; why climate changes is such a threat to grizzlies, the challenges and financial realities of a life dedicated to environmental advocacy; his greatest source of pride and greatest disappointment; what is giving him hope now; and Doug reads several passages from "Was It Worth It?'" - Even as he's getting on up there in age, today, at age 81, you can still feel the fire in Doug's spirit, and his passion for grizzlies is palpable. I was honored to have the opportunity to chat with Doug, and I loved his book "Was it Worth It?" I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. --- Doug Peacock "Was it Worth It? Our guest Doug Peacock is a financial expert and advocate of the concept of "infinite banking," also known as "bank on yourself." This strategy involves using a type of permanent life insurance policy as a personal bank to generate cash value that can be used for a variety of purposes, including saving for retirement, paying off debt, and funding big expenses such as a child's education or a down payment on a home. Doug believes infinite banking is a vital wealth building technique because it allows individuals to have more control over their money and build wealth in a tax-advantaged way. With infinite banking, policyholders can access their cash value through loans and withdrawals, which can be done without incurring taxes or penalties as long as the policy remains in force. One of the key benefits of infinite banking is that it provides a guaranteed rate of return on the cash value component of the policy, which is typically higher than what is offered by traditional banks. I was recently asked to have Doug Peacock on the UY show. (He is this week's Thankful and Giving Back guest.) I said yes as long as Doug could show up and share as opposed to pitch. There's a difference and it matters to me. I think there is a way to talk about your passion without leaving the audience feeling like they've listened to one long ad. Doug, known most of his life as ‘coach' has enthusiasm and drive. That much is evident. First it was football, and now its infinite banking.I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the things Doug shared. How do banks make money? Rate of investment vs. rate of return. Likely it will take some time to process and some conferring with those whose opinions I look up to (Ron, Dave, Kelly). I appreciate how committed he is to this newer way of wanting to help himself and others. He's got the heart of a coach all right. Meet Doug Peacock, wilderness warrior, author and the inspiration for Edward Abbey's well-known character in The Monkeywrench Gang, George Washington Hayduke. Doug Peacock's new book, Was It Worth It: A Wilderness Warror's Long Trail Home, contemplates a life spent in nature as well as the partnerships in wilderness living and defense he had with Abbey and others in the environmental writing world. His 1996 book, Grizzly Years, which recounts his 20-year relationship with grizzly bears, is one of the great books about the misguided relationship people have with apex predator species. Was It Worth It is published by Patagonia; it's one of the few books that carries an environmental benefits summary — it is printed on recycled, chlorine-free paper, so it's a book you can feel good about buying.Doug reads from his latest book and talks about his 50+ years living near and studying Grizzly Bear around the Yellowstone National Park region. He reflects on how, if one doesn't try to control and exploit nature, it provides endless magical experience and the resources necessary for a responsible lifestyle. Doug also discusses the role of indigenous knowledge and the urgent need to respond to the collapse of biodiversity in the American West. For our twenty-second episode, we had the great pleasure of sitting down for over an hour with Doug Peacock, who has been fighting to save the grizzly bear for decades now, and when you read his fabulous book, Grizzly Years, you get a deeper understanding of why he has such a passion for this cause. After Doug returned from his tour in Vietnam, during the worst years of the war, he escaped into the wilderness to try and find some healing, and Grizzly Years is his account of that period in his life, as well as a powerful memoir of his time in Vietnam. And we pair Mr. Peacock with one of his dear friends, and one of the legends of Montana literature, William Kittredge, who was director of the Creative Writing program at the University of Montana for decades, and also co-edited one of the classic anthologies of the West, The Last Best Place. We talk about his book The Nature of Generosity.

On this episode of the Park Leaders Show, Doug Peacock joins the show to discuss his latest project, Save The Yellowstone Grizzly. A long-time naturalist, Doug founded STYG in 2016 to advocate safety and recovery of grizzlies south of Canada. As he explains, the removal of grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park should be a national priority following the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s March 2016 delisting announcement. With the agency’s dismissal of climate change and relocation urgency, Doug hopes the nonprofit will score legal victories as they seek to preserve the welfare of grizzly bears in Yellowstone and similar national parks. Join Grizzly Bear Foundation’s Executive Director, Nicholas Scapillati, on a journey through some of the most famous grizzly country in the world with naturalist, author and Vietnam veteran Doug Peacock. “I’m fighting for grizzlies but it could be any other animal including Homo Sapien, you know I'd be doing the same damn thing,” said Doug Peacock. “Things have got to move. I'm not sure we got enough time to do all that but I'm not going to quit trying.”Much as the flow of the current pulls a canoe down the river, we hear how the call of the wilderness pulled this icon of conservation toward the grizzly bear, restoring the soul of a war-ravaged soldier. Now a grandfather, Doug explores the future of the grizzly and the importance of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem for these soul-saving bears. If you enjoyed listening to this episode, please consider supporting our efforts with a financial gift to help safeguard the lands grizzly bears roam, the food they eat, and the wild we share.
After two tours as a Special Forces medic in the Central Highlands of Vietnam (for which he received the Soldier’s Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Bronze Star), Peacock was repatriated to the Rocky Mountains, the wild deserts and tundras of North America. It was there he met the late author Edward Abbey, who used Peacock to mold his iconic character, George Washington Hayduke. After the war, Doug crawled back into mountains and found solitude in wilderness to be exactly what he needed to confront the demons of Vietnam. In Grizzly Years, Doug credits grizzly bears with restoring his soul. He has been the most consistent advocate for grizzly bears for the last 40 years, traveling between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks to film them and document their struggles to survive. For the last three decades, he has lectured and written widely about wilderness: from bears to buffalo, from the Sierra Madres of the Sonoran desert to the fjords of British Columbia, from the tigers of Siberia to the blue sheep of Nepal.

I was never in the military, but I spent some time overseas as a war correspondent for Esquire, Harper’s, and Mother Jones magazines. I was never in a battle or close to a bomb going off. I saw the aftermath—bodies on the ground, neighborhoods turned to rubble, people silent and in shock. The main thing I have to deal with is knowing that a couple times people who were helping me with my stories were punished, severely, after I left. I got to fly home to America and they had to stay there and suffer the consequences for helping me. I carry this guilt. Coaching football can be tough. Then along comes this guy. Coach Doug Peacock was a hell of a coach. And as it turns out, one hell of a teacher as well. Doug Peacock took an unlikely path to becoming an icon of conservation. Following two tours in the Vietnam War as a Green Beret medic, he sought solace and comfort in the American Wilderness, where he began observing and then filming grizzly bears. He believed the bears saved his life, and he felt compelled to return the favor. Many people know Peacock as the inspiration for George Hayduke, the infamous character inThe Monkey Wrench Gang, the 1975 novel by Ed Abbey. Over the years, Peacock authored a number of books about his journey. At the 2019 Mountainfilm festival, in Telluride, Colorado, he sat down with veteran radio producer Scott Carrier to offer an enlightened perspective on the history of bears in this country, share some hysterical stories about his own encounters with the animals, and give his take on the big challenges that grizzlies face today.

After a backpacking trip to Glacier National Park, I passed through the Yaak Valley. I was intrigued by the beauty of the valley. It just felt different than most other places I had visited. Shortly after my short visit to the Yaak Valley, I discovered a book called The Book of Yaak by Rick Bass. I began devouring Rick Bass' books, and I returned to the Yaak. Over the years, I hiked many miles and spent many nights in the Yaak Valley. And read many Rick Bass books. Rick used his words to bring awareness to the Yaak Valley and the issues this unique place in Montana faced. In this episode of The Park Leaders Show, Rick Bass talks about the Yaak Valley, the importance of parks, and the biggest issues facing parks today. Here are some of Rick Bass' books you will enjoy; The Lost Grizzlies The Ninemile Wolves The Wild Marsh Rick Bass recommends The Grizzly Years by Doug Peacock. Rick Bass gave us a list of suggested books people in parks should read. Check out the Suggested Reading List from Rick Bass.

For the past 12,000 years, the earth has experienced a relatively stable climate. Today, that predictability has ended, and global warming is our new reality. Yet such shifting weather patterns threatened Homo sapiens once before, right here in North America as the continent was first being colonized. About 15,000 years ago, the weather began to warm, melting the glaciers of the Late Pleistocene and driving the beasts of the Ice Age toward extinction. In this new landscape, humans managed to adapt to unfamiliar habitats and dangerous creatures in the midst of a wildly fluctuating climate. Are there lessons for modern people lingering along this ancient trail?
