Ben Moon is a photographer and filmmaker who has integrated his passion for the outdoors into his work, including as a longtime contributor to Patagonia with climbing and surfing imagery in particular. Dogs have always been part of Ben's life, but it was after a divorce, living out of a car,  and then a colon cancer diagnosis at 29, that the companionship with his rescue dog Denali, a pit-husky mix, took on a new meaning. Their strong connection was highlighted in a 2015 short film called ‘Denali' which honors his late dog and has amassed over two million views. As a follow-up, Ben then wrote a 2020 memoir, also entitled Denali, that took an even more introspective look at the power of their human-dog relationship. Now at a new life stage, with his 8-year-old rescue dog Nori, an Australian shepherd and husky mix, they have settled down in a beach house on the Oregon Coast. Ben is learning to appreciate the slow build and the benefits that come from settling down in one place.Ben speaks about his life journey and dogs with Dr. Sharon Holland, an author and distinguished Professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina (UNC), as well as the host for Dog Save The People. For more information about the episode, guest, and featured links: www.dogsavethepeople.com/episodes/ben-moon-2024

It was a treat to have living legend Ben Moon on the pod this week. A lot of ground covered in an absolutely whistle-stop tour of Ben's career and replete with a fine selection of totally random tangents and rambles. Bailing from O levels because of too much physics, dossing in a cave, the birth of sport climbing, training and board climbing, how comps paid better in the 80s than they do today. Fred Rouhling was a good climber, but 5.15b? At a time when 14d was the hardest grade, Fred suggested that his half boulder/half route hybrid, Akira, was much harder than any other climb on the planet. Not many people believed the quiet, usually reserved French climber. Many of the top pros at the time; Ben Moon, Jibe Tribout and Alex Huber, would speak out about the suggestion.  Rumors about the ascent were rampant. Some said he never climbed it. Some said he filled in the holds after he did it. Some said he chipped it specifically to fit his freakish proportions. The media turned Fred Rouhling into a pariah. A warning about suggesting big grades. He was ostracized and disappeared.  But Fred Rouhling might just have been ahead of his time.  Check out more here. Written in Stone: Climbing’s Most Important Ascents

It's hard to argue that any climber from the 90's had a bigger impact than Ben Moon, and he did it from the launch of the decade.  While he wasn't looking for controversy, he also wasn't afraid to make a statement. All punk rock and dreadlocks, he established the first two 14b's in France, with names like missiles aimed directly at the French. He defied British ethics to move the sport forward into the next century. And yes, he even broke Wolfgang Gullich's streak of firsts by establishing Hubble, the first 14c (maybe even 14d) in the world. We kick it with Alex Honnold, the rock climber who was once on 60 Minutes. He has even done a few other impressive things since then … you know, like free soloing El-fucking-Cap. It's been a big year for Honnold, from traversing the polar regions of Greenland in search of a 4,000-foot unclimbed sea cliff while doing extreme climate science, to going deep into the pain cave on his epic HURT traverse in Red Rock, to nearly killing Magnus Mitbo, to perhaps, most importantly, becoming a dad. All while expanding his reach as media star. Honnold was gracious enough to come down off his perch and roll around in the muck with us podcasting lowlifes for a candid and fun conversation that traverses all the great things that we love about climbing, proving that he's still a dirtbag at heart. It has only been going just over 2yrs but has already had a huge impact on the climbing community and features tonnes of well-chosen and crafted interviews with pros, coaches and climbing personalities.  His show has featured some of the great climbers of all time and clients we've also tested or trained ourselves - including people like Ben Moon, Hazel Findlay and Steve McClure. Steven was also a client of ours at Lattice, some years ago, but connected with us again recently with Tom Randall as a guest on his own show. This got us thinking, if we've got someone who's spent the last 2 years interviewing some of the world's best climbers and most interesting members of the community, then surely he's observed some patterns and commonalities between all these individuals? In this episode, Tom chats to Steven about some of the guests on the show, how he pulls information from his sources and has utilised it in his own climbing or with his own clients and finally what he's learnt from his experiences of living and working on the road whilst trying to perform. Find out more about Steven's podcast here and his Patreon here. Donate here: https://bit.ly/LSBuyPint Think ‘viral video’ and a couple of examples from the last decade stand out. Danny Macaskill’s ‘Inspired Bicycles’, certainly. Ben Moon’s ‘Denali’, too. Like a lot of people - over 20 million at the last count - this beautiful, moving tribute to his dog was the first time I became aware of Ben and his work as a photographer, filmer and writer. As is the case with any creative work that achieves huge success, the film hit hard on a deeply emotional level; successfully conveying the uniqueness of our bond with dogs, as well as the purity of Ben’s relationship with Denali himself. The success of ‘Denali’ made it inevitable that the story would evolve into unexpected directions, and Ben soon followed the initial short film with an extremely honest and emotionally affecting book about his life and relationship with Denali. I really like the Denali story, and I especially enjoyed our conversation, because it is a great reminder to regard the act of creativity as a series of concentric circles, within which new meanings can accrue and accumulate from one single starting point. Now, with the news that a film adaption of the story is on the way, I sat down with Ben to discuss the whole story. Like a lot of my favourite Looking Sideways conversations, this was a lovely chat that took its own sweet time and went off in some lovely tangential directions. Of course we talked about Denali - the dog and the short film - but we also chatted about Ben’s career as a creative in the adventure world, the nature of style, the emotional challenge of creating honestly, and other favourite Looking Sideways themes. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

I hope you all have had a good last few weeks and I am stoked to be sharing a conversation I had with the amazingly talented photographer, filmmaker and author Ben Moon. If you are at all interested in rock climbing, surfing or portrait photography there's a pretty good chance you have come across some of Ben's work before. Ben's ability and approach to storytelling and photography has led his work to feature in the highly regarded Patagonia catalogs for the last 17 years as well all over the world in various editorials and screens showing the beauty and authenticity of people challenging themselves in the outdoors. Recently Ben has released his first book titled Denali - A man, a dog and a friendship of a lifetime. The book at its core is a story of growth, resilience, love and connection that shares Ben's own deeply personal journey with colon cancer and his special friendship with his dog Denali. This book is easily one of the best I have read in the last two years for sure. In this episode Ben and I talk about how he first got into photography and filmmaking, his book Denali and the reason behind why he wrote it, his approach to storytelling, how surviving cancer has impacted his outlook on life, advice for photographers and filmmakers starting out today and so so much more. He joins MTB Ben and Ben to discuss Washington DC's outdoor market and REI's work, advocacy, and role in that area, as well as beyond that area. It's great to hear about the work that Bryan and many others from REI are doing and the time and money. The guys discuss bringing groups and users together, working with NICA, and getting new people into the sport. ----------- ABOUT THIS EPISODE GREI - https://www.rei.com/ REI on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/reifindout Ben Moon - https://benmoon.com/ DC Adventure Film Festival - https://www.facebook.com/DCAdventureFilmFestival/   ---------- ABOUT DIRT FEST Maurice and Elaine Tierney started Dirt Rag in 1989, creating a magazine that provided an inclusive forum where readers shared their stoke for the riding, culture, and lifestyle of mountain biking. After having a great time at the legendary Jim Thorpe Mountain Bike Weekend, the pair decided that Dirt Rag was in a position to translate the magazine’s in-print stoke to an in-person “gathering of the tribe.”  The first edition of Dirt Fest took place in 1991 at Camp Soles, a YMCA youth camp east of Pittsburgh. The original event was decidedly chill. There was no vendor expo bristling with the bleeding edge of bicycle technology. Demo rides amounted to swapping bikes with a newfound friend. There was a lake, a bonfire, and a bicycle polo field. Nighttime entertainment consisted of an attendee strumming a guitar at the group bonfire—a far cry from The Earthtones jamming for a circus tent full of partying mountain bikers.  Read more about Dirt Fest HERE.

Welcome to another very special, climbing inspired Decomposed Radio. Back on Show 053, we featured a unique mix of the amazing original music from one of the most iconic climbing films around....."Hard Grit." It was really popular with Decomposed Radio listeners, so since then I've been working hard to collect all the music from another old skool and equally iconic climbing film...."The Real Thing" which features Ben Moon and Jerry Moffatt dishing out the justice on some hard and classic boulders in the magical forest of Fontainbleau. You can say what you want about Alex Honnold's impressive "Free Solo" that's showing at the flicks at the moment, but those of us that are really clued up know that the best climbing films ever made, are The Real Thing and Hard Grit, and as ever it's always the music that helps make a film truly great! So with this in mind, Decomposed Radio proudly presents your training and climbing soundtrack for the 2019 season.....Get ready to get your old skool funk and tech trance heads on, get down to some nitty gritty climbing, be rayt positive, and smash in some personal bests on your birthday.......This is The Real Thing mix on Decomposed Radio show 062....."In the snow....."

Ichthyosaurs are large marine reptiles that existed for most of the Mesozoic Era. The most familiar forms superficially represent dolphins, but some earlier ichthyosaurs were more eel like. They could attain huge proportions, with some genera reaching up to 21m long. They were active predators feeding on belemnite, fishes and even other marine reptiles! In this episode, we talk to Dr Ben Moon and Fiann Smithwick, researchers at the University of Bristol, UK. Both have recently been involved in producing a documentary with the BBC entitled ‘Attenborough and the Sea Dragon’, so we have used this as an opportunity to discuss in great detail what ichthyosaurs are and get insights into the kind of work required to produce such a documentary.

On this episode of the podcast we have the opportunity to sit down for an inspiring conversation with photographer, filmmaker, adventure lover, and cancer survivor Ben Moon.  Many of you know Ben from his heartfelt short film "Denali", that chronicled the last days of his dog that had been with him through so much of his life, and became a viral sensation and an award winning piece on the film festival circuit.  Although that film definitely helped push Ben onto the national stage, he had already built a career and a lifestyle that many would admire, working with companies like Patagonia and shooting music videos and photos for several well known musicians.  Growing up in a small Michigan town with a father who preferred to do things his own way, Ben learned the value of self sustainability at an early age and was taught how to live off the land, hunt, and farm for food, and build the things he needed.  Although Ben spent plenty of time in the woods as a kid, it wasn't until his college years that he would began to realize his athletic abilities and a love for rock climbing.  It was through climbing that Ben would decide to make the move out west, freshly married and ready to start a new life.  He settled in Portland and began trying to figure out what the next chapter of his life would look like, but sometimes it's tragedy that sends us in the direction we need.  It would be a fairly heartbreaking divorce that would end up being the driving force for Ben's next chapter and the catalyst to picking up a camera and start a new life.  Ben's early photos were of the things he loved most, and he was fortunate enough to have some good mentors along the way.  Before long he was getting published and formed a relationship with Patagonia that has lived on to this day.  During our talk we get the chance to ask Ben what it was like creating a film that dealt with so many personal issues, how he created his newest piece "Off Season" for Yeti, featuring his road trip with MLB pitcher and fellow photography lover Daniel Norris, and hear about his battle with cancer and how he stayed positive and motivated to beat the odds and return to the life of adventure he loved.  So sit back, listen, and be ready to be inspired from our conversation with Ben Moon.   To Learn More About Ben Moon Visit: https://www.benmoon.com To Watch "Denali" Visit: https://vimeo.com/122375452 To Watch "The Off Season" Visit: https://vimeo.com/165478850   About Visual Revolutionary: http://www.visualrevolutionary.com Because we are interested in people's story, and not what type of gear they use, we introduce a new much needed podcast in the world of photography and filmmaking.  Featuring in-depth conversations with some of the world's leading photographers, filmmakers, and other visual artists, we are bringing you the backstory on how they got to where they are today.

Direct Download: LINKDate: August 20th, 2015 About Ben Moon Ben Moon is an iconic climber from England who's accomplished much in his 40-year climbing career. He's 49 years old and just sent 9a (5.14d) this year, after having put up the first of the same grade in 1990 ("Hubble" in France). He's bouldered up to V14, and he does all this while running a successful climbing company called Moon Climbing and raising a child with his wife. He also created the classic Moon Board and the Moon Fingerboard, designed for the stronger, more massochistic among us. I wanted to talk to this legend about how he's achieved all of this, and he kindly granted me an interview. By the way, there are 2 Ben Moon's in the climbing world: this English Ben Moon and the videographer/climber Ben Moon who lives in the U.S. and recently made a video about Denali the dog. Libby Purves meets cartoonist Gerald Scarfe; former journalist Eimear O'Callaghan; actor Greg Wise and rock climber Ben Moon. Eimear O'Callaghan is a former BBC news editor whose book Belfast Days is based on the diary she kept in 1972 at the height of the Troubles. The book records her and her family's experiences throughout this turbulent year. From the inconvenience of British Army check-points and power cuts to the horror of shootings, bombings and almost 500 killings, her teenage jottings convey a family and community trying to function normally against a background of violence and bloodshed. Belfast Days: A 1972 Teenage Diary is published by Merrion Press. Gerald Scarfe CBE is a political cartoonist. He started drawing for Punch and Private Eye and is now best known for his work in the New Yorker and the Sunday Times. His latest exhibition, Milk Snatcher, The Thatcher Drawings features his cartoons of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. It spans a period of 22 years from her days as a member of the shadow cabinet to her leadership of the Conservative Party, her tenure as prime minister and her political decline. Milk Snatcher, The Thatcher Drawings exhibition is at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Actor Greg Wise returns to the theatre after an absence of 17 years to star in Brad Fraser's play Kill Me Now. He plays Jake Sturdy, a once successful writer, who now cares for his disabled son, Joey, with the support of a motley crew of friends and family. Greg's acting credits include the films Sense and Sensibility and Effie Gray and his theatre work ranges from Richard II to The Recruiting Officer. Kill Me Now is at the Park Theatre, Finsbury Park, London. In 1990 Ben Moon made rock climbing history with the first ascent of Hubble in the Peak District, now widely recognised as the world's first F9a graded climb. A major figure in the sport climbing movement of the 1980s and the bouldering phenomenon of the 1990s, he fell in love with climbing at seven when he was taken to the Lake District on a family holiday. His story is told in Statement - The Ben Moon Story by Ed Douglas, published by Vertebrate.
