Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is my friend Bobby from Massachusetts who, for privacy purposes, is speaking under a pseudonym today. For today's episode, Bob picked Phish's show from September 14, 2000 at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center near Buffalo, NY. I recorded a mini episode about the Suzy Greenberg from this show that closed the first set but there is so much more to this show than that. Musically speaking, this is one of the most dense shows I've ever heard–out of 12 songs in the first and second set, eight of them are on the Phish.net jam charts. But there was so much more to it than the music. Bob was there with his friends, I was there with my brother, there were the rumors of the impending hiatus (which was not yet officially announced), and pretty much the same jam throughout the night, weaving its way in and out of almost every song. Bob and I had a great time breaking it all down.So start wooing, don't underestimate Prince Caspian, and  make sure to bring a change of dry clothes as Bobby F Weaver and I go over September 14, 2000 at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.Audio used in today's episode

In Episode 154, Adrian Mudd describes opportunities to work in New York at Six Flags Darien Lake

The Workamper Show Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2022 32:25

Today I will speak with a representative from Six Flags Darien Lake, which is an amusement park, water park, hotel, campground and amphitheater located in western New York state. Adrian Mudd is a human resources supervisor for Six Flags Darien Lake. He has been with the company for almost five years and oversees the park's on-site work programs that recruit Workampers and international students to spend a season performing a variety of jobs. Six Flags needs ride operators, food and beverage workers, people to sell tickets and work at the front gates, staff retail stores, run games and provide other support services, such as cleaning the park. At the hotel and campground, the park needs front desk staff to check guests in an out, and also to serve as housekeepers, groundskeepers and camp hosts. There are 60 RV sites set aside for use by Workampers, so Adrian is hoping to hire between 100 and 120 people this coming season. The jobs are open to couples, solo Workampers and teenagers traveling with their parents. Workampers are expected to put in at least 35 hours per week and they are paid for every hour starting at $15 per hour. Overtime is sometimes available at a time-and-a-half rate. Six Flags Darien Lake has been using Workampers since 2014 and the park has regularly expanded the number of opportunities available to Workampers every year since then. Adrian likes using Workampers because they are a tremendous help in getting the park ready for the season and they can work when traditional high school and college-age employees are not available because they're either in class or heading back to school. Adrian likes employing older Workampers because they often have an interesting work history and lots of experience. Consequently, they tend to serve as mentors for younger folks. In fact, he said some of the younger workers return for several years just because they want to work with specific Workampers. Last year, employees ranged from 14 all the way to 94 years of age. Adrian is hiring people now to work this season. The park opens on May 6th, but only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until late June when schools are out for the summer break. Then, the park is open seven days a week until Labor Day, when it scales back to weekends once again until the end of October. At that time, the park hosts a super-fun Freight Fest event for Halloween to close out the season. This is an ideal opportunity for Workampers because, for six weeks in the spring and again in the fall, they only need to work weekends when the park is open. That gives them plenty of time to explore the region, which includes Niagara Falls, which is an hour away, and the gorgeous Finger Lakes region, which is about two hours east. Cleveland, Ohio, is about three and a half hours away and there are a lot of big museums in that city. If you want to experience a different culture, Toronto is only two and a half hours away. Western New York is a night-to-day difference between the busyness of the big cities of eastern New York, like New York City. And don't forget about Lake Ontario and Lake Erie because there are a lot of coastal or water-related things to do around those Great Lakes. But, you don't even have to travel far to have fun because Workampers get free admission to Six Flags Darien Lake, and there is enough going on at the park to keep them busy in the summer when they don't have as much time off. A big attraction at the park is the Ride of Steel, which is 208 feet tall and reaches speeds up to 75 miles per hour. There are dozens of other rides to enjoy as well as live shows, concerts, restaurants and a full-size water park. There you can enjoy wet-and-wild tube rides, a wave pool or simply float along a lazy river. Either way, there are plenty of things to do when Workamping at Six Flags Darien Lake. To apply, visit www.sixflagsjobs.com and click on Darien Lake. There is information on that site about all the jobs ava...

Brian Farr — Traveling Route 20 to understand history

What began as a path traveled by Native Americans became a plank road for European settlers and now is suburban Guilderland's major thoroughfare — Route 20.Route 20 seemed long to Bryan Farr when he was kid, traveling with his family every summer from the Fingers Lakes where they lived to the Darien Lake, an amusement park near Buffalo. But, as a young man, he embraced the entire length of the historic highway, driving through 12 states from Boston, Massachusetts to Newport, Oregon in two weeks: 3,365 miles from coast to coast, America's longest highway. Farr describes it as a once-in-a-lifetime trip on this week's podcast.Farr, a meteorologist with a penchant for photography, took pictures along the way and planned to put together a book. He wrote to the towns he had traveled through and asked them to write three things about the town. He was sent three-page emails in return. As his interest in the history of the route burgeoned, Farr founded the Historic U.S. Route 20 Association, a labor of love.Farr will be speaking, through Zoom, to the Guilderland Historical Society at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18. The public is invited to the free event. Details on how to join the meeting are posted at www.guilderlandhistoricalsociety.org.Farr knows the history of the route intimately. The stretch between Albany and Buffalo, he says, almost became defunct in the 1850s because the Erie Canal was so popular. As automobiles started replacing horse-drawn conveyances in the early 20th Century, Farr says, “Good roads were hard to find.” In 1921, the Federal Highway Act allocated funds to states; each was to pick their best roads.Leaders met regionally and then, in 1925, Farr said, all the regions met to connect the dots. The act laid the groundwork for a national highway system. That's when the numbering system for highways was developed, with the lowest numbers for roads running north and east and the highest for roads going south and west. Even numbers were for east-to-west roads; odd numbers for north-to-south roads. A zero at the end of a route, as in Route 20, means it's a cross-country highway.Such a numbering system was useful, Farr notes, before the age of GPS when travelers had to find their own way.Once the roads were numbered, roadside motels and cabins popped up, Farr said, noting motorists could travel only 100 or 150 miles a day and would stop along the way at the mom-and-pop businesses, often with a shop, restaurant, and gas station — and sometimes a kitschy attraction.“Roadside architecture really started to bloom,” said Farr, as a landlocked lighthouse or a giant teapot beckoned to travelers.By the 1950s and '60s, traffic became so intense that, in some places, it could be backed up for a mile or more. Once superhighways, like New York's Thruway, were built, some of the towns along the old Route 20 dried up almost overnight, said Farr.Cherry Valley, west of Guilderland, became a ghost town, Farr said, describing the Thruway as “the nail in the coffin.”One of his association's goals is to highlight small towns so visitors return there. Recently, Iowa gave Route 20 an historic designation, which took several years to secure. There are now 250 signs across Iowa to help travelers follow the historic Route 20 there.Farr and his association were following a similar approach in New York State. Both the Guilderland Public Library and Gade Farm in town posted signs, noting they stand along Route 20. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Mini-Episode #13: Suzy Greenberg, 9/14/00, Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Darien, NY Hi everybody, and welcome to mini-episode #13 of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Mini-episodes of Attendance Bias feature a breakdown of a single song or jam from a show that I’ve attended. I’ll give a little background about what makes the song or jam so special to me, and then we dive right in.These mini-episodes are posted on a bi-weekly basis in between full episodes of Attendance Bias, when a guest and I go over a full Phish show. Today’s mini-episode features “Suzy Greenberg” from September 14, 2000 at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in Darien Center, NY. ****************************************************************************************************I am the only Phish fan in my family. I don’t have, and never had, a familial tie to the band or the scene. My older brother didn’t turn me on to Phish, my older cousin never “saw a few shows in college,” and my parents weren’t Deadheads who led me down the path toward psychedelic music. Aside from a few friends who were also into the band, I was pretty much on my own when I began to explore the Phish world at 14 years old. I tried to bridge that family gap once, at this show, and it didn’t quit take. But before the experiment failed, there was some fun to be had. That fleeting moment happened at setbreak during the band’s show at Darien Lake on September 14, 2000, right after an all-time Suzy Greenberg.****************************************************************************************************

Episode 25: What You See is What You Get Believe it or not, today's podcast is inspired by the difference between Disney World and Darien Lake. How does their atmosphere and customer experience differ? Which one offers more bang for your buck? And how does this all tie into theatre? Subscribe to The Theatrefolk Podcast On iTunes. On Stitcher. Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP, the Theatrefolk podcast. I am Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today it's all about what you see is what you get. But first, let's do some THEATREFOLK NEWS: Wow. I think I'm, seeming very bouncy today. It's bouncy day at Theatrefolk. So this week, I'm going to be at the Arkansas State Thespian Festival teaching three different playwriting workshops. All of which focus on the beginning stages of writing, that's kind of my specialty, that's what I like to teach, how do we get started? Sometimes, that is the toughest part of all and it's the part that makes us think we can't be writers, or artists, or creators of any kind because the start is so daunting. So I like to focus on that, the idea, where does inspiration come from, and if indeed inspiration exists at all, and how to make sure that particularly with play righting that your work has a defined characters and it define conflict. Time and time again, when I worked with writers and when writers say to me my idea fizzled out and I don't know why. It's quite often because I've not defined the conflict. I haven't been to this festival in a number of years and it's lovely to be going back, really lovely students. I'm looking forward to it. Lastly, where oh where can you find this podcast? We post new episodes every Wednesday at theatrefolk.com and our Facebook page and Twitter. You can find us on the stitcher app, and you can subscribe to TFP on iTunes. All you have to do is search on the word Theatrefolk. Episode Twenty-Five: What you see is what you get. So, Craig and I like to spend time at Disney World. You may not know that, you may, I owned it, and I said it. Walt Disney World – that's where we like to go. For those of you who have no interest in all things Mickey Mouse, that's the one in Florida; Disney Land, California, Disney World – Florida. We don't have children, we have been with children. Did you know there are a lot of things to do with children on Disney world? You know, I didn't know that. Two adults running around, riding rides, people watching, sugary snacks, the whole shebang; we've been going to Disney World for over ten years now. First time, we got free one day tickets. I think it was in 1997 and we really were hooked. It was a number of years after that before we were able to scrape together the dough for a real vacation. And I still remember the day, I was temping, I was sitting in a doctor's office and it was… I remember very clearly the doctor because I have to do a lot of dicta, which means the guy speaks into a little tape recorder and then the secretary takes the tape recorder. Sorry, the administrative assistant takes the tape recorder and then types up what he said. Whatever doctor he was, he had to use words. The length of which I have never seen and was a mumbler and a fast-talker and you just play over and over again just going, what on earth is he saying? Anyway I'm the doctor's office and then on the phone to Craig and I remember clearly, I said “You know, well, I think you better go book that trip”. I remember that day. Disney means a lot to us. So I just outlined above, it was the place we went to for our very first vacation and it was a long time. When we were in a relationship before, we could afford anything close to a vacation. And actually afterwards, it was the place that made us put a savings plan in place so that we were always saving for a vacation. That has stood us in good stead even today. We're currently saving for up an English vacation.

Disney park fans are some of the most passionate people around. They know everything there is to know about Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Uncle Walt, Imagineering and pretty much anything else related to the Disney Company and their theme parks. There's even a group of diehards who organize "unofficial" fan celebrations at the Disney Parks in Orlando and Anaheim. October 1st, 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort, and a group called WDWCelebrations will be hosting an unbelievable fan-organized event to complement the official activities offered by the Walt Disney Company. This week, we're joined by Adam Roth, co-founder of WDWCelebrations, to talk about Project XL: The World at 40 which will take place September 29th - October 2nd. He'll tell us about the history of their organization and what they have in store for their biggest fan celebration yet!  Plus, you can find out how to sign up for the fun! We'll also have a Live Trip Report from Darien Lake, an update on EB's Chickens and much more!

Jeff, Carrie, Mike and Gonch review this week's news in the amusement industry. Coasting For Kids at the Cedar Fair parks was a big success! We raised more than $62,000 this year. Ouimet says all the right things, and Gonch is in "like" during this dating phase. Jeff gives Windseeker a big thumbs up, really enjoyed the ride. Ed Markey ups rhetoric as family of Darien Lake accident victim mourns. When will this guy go away? Lawsuit delivered to Darien Lake over the fatality, not surprisingly. Harry Potter bonus hours offered to people who see the midnight showing of the final film at Universal Orlando. Excellent marketing effort! LA Times writer visits Kennywood, one of our favorites. California Adventure rehab continues, the entrance is done. Mike was there last weekend, says there are a lot of workarounds to get to stuff. Little Mermaid is his favorite ride. Geauga Lake Big Dipper: Yes, there are still interested parties. Mother claims discrimination against her daughter with Down Syndrome at Dorney, who was prohibited riding. Couple gets stuck on a slingshot ride in Dallas. Jeff wouldn't ride it. Mike wouldn't because he's cheap. Bad Illinois cop gets busted at Michigan's Adventure for being a drunk idiot. Six Flags posts excellent gains. So where is the bad economy? Carrie hit Six Flags America and Great Adventure. "Marriage is so gay" shirt causes great controversy at Dollywood. Jeff, Mike and Gonch review this week's news in the amusement industry. Roller coaster safety with Patrick Warburton (the guy who does the intro on Disney's Soarin', among other things). Goofy's Sky School panned at Disney's California Adventure. Gonch suggests that people who enjoy something too much actually end up complaining more than enjoying. Dania Beach Hurricane might get a new lease on life at Zoo Miami. Movie news: Matterhorn and Transformers. Legoland Florida announces schedule, will be closed a few days a week, with short hours. Green Lantern opens up at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Discussion revolves around capacity. Latest Walt Disney World rumor among the geeks is that the company wants to sell a stake in the parks. Doesn't make sense for an established park. Baboon loose in New Jersey, Six Flags Great Adventure says they're not sure if it belongs to them. The headline writes its own jokes. People busted for selling fake Cedar Point tickets. Happened in Gonch's shady neighborhood. Worker dies despite fall protection on Magical Midway's Star Flyer. Kennywood announces a holiday lighting event. Questionable given Pittsburgh winters, but a good idea if they can pull it off in the long term. Too mad Kings Island wasn't able to continue theirs. Ouimet makes first comments as new Cedar Fair president at annual meeting. Jeff doesn't think we'll see impact from new leadership until next year. Boy dies in or near Knoebels pool. No clear reason for death yet. Family of girl who fell from Morey's Ferris wheel sues the park. The recurring theme: Should a park have to protect you from yourself? Mike points out flaws in height used to determine age and maturity measure. Universal Orlando allegedly being sued for using an unlicensed font in Harry Potter merchandise. FunSpot USA opens up its spinning mouse roller coaster from Cypress Gardens. Quassy getting a lot of press for Wooden Warrior. The dynamics of those Timberliner trains probably contribute to the awesomeness. Man without legs ejected from Ride of Steel at Darien Lake, died. Lots of questions about why he was allowed to ride something that restrains by the legs. Coasting For Kids 2011 is go at Cedar Fair parks! Help us raise money for Give Kids The World.
