Since 2013, The Cabrach Trust has been reviving the region's storied history. From the very beginning, that whisky history was part and parcel of the revitalization, and a distillery was always in the cards. On this episode of Scran it's all about celebrating whisky - but at long last, we get to do it in person! Rosalind travelled north to experience the return of Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. With people attending from all over the world, she caught up with many directly involved in the festival, producers and those visiting simply to sample and enjoy the whisky.  First up was a tour of Glenfiddich where guide Brian Weir gave a great insight into the history of this world famous brand and the whisky mavericks of Dufftown.Rosalind speaks to Sarah Burgess, Creative Director of the Craigellachie Collection about her long career in the whisky trade and how she is on a mission to popularise the highball.  One of the joys of Scottish whisky festivals is the wonderful entertainment that's always laid on, the Spirit of Speyside was no different. Johnnie, known as John, owned a grocery store and became known as the guy that could get you things. By things we mean tea, fine wines, and spirits. He found his way into the whiskey world by blending the whiskey that he got in Creating something new John passed away in 1857 and his son, Alexander, took over when he was old enough In 1843, with railroads in place, Alexander was able to create a distribution network which shipped his whiskey worldwide. In 1862, sales averaged 100,000 gallons each year. “Old Highland Blend” was the first copyrighted blend to hit shelves in 1867 Johnnie walker Black label Johnnie Walker Blue was released in 1992 and hit the shelves at $150 a bottle. It was the most expensive whiskey on the market and Diageo believed it would sell well in bars as bottle service for companies wooing potential clients This bottle comes from hand selecting rare scotch whiskies and blending them. Only 1 in 10,000 casks make the cut. Diageo operates about 28 distilleries across Scotland, many producing whisky casks utilized for Johnnie Walker products. These include single malts like Clynelish, Talisker, Caol Ila, Lagavulin, Oban, Glendullan, Dufftown, Glen Ord, Glenkinchie, Craagganmore, Mortlach, Royal Lochnagar, Glen Elgin, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchi, Inchgower and Cardhu. The large single grain distilleries in Diageo's portfolio include the massive Cameronbridge Distillery north of Edinburgh, the home of Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky. Since this is a blended bottle and the best of the best, it is rumored that barrels that are as old as 60 years are used in Johnnie Walker Blue and barrels as young as 28 years. This bottle gives a whole new perspective on what blended scotch is and the quality alone that goes into it. 英国のロンドンとそれ以外の地域を交互にご紹介しています。今回は蒸留所で、特定の場所ではないのですが、蒸留所にフォーカスを当てたいと思います。英語で「蒸留する」というのは"Distill"と言い、蒸留所は"Distillery"と言います。これはお酒の造り方のひとつで、もうひとつ有名な造り方は「醸造」ですね。醸造所は"Brewery"と言います。最近では日本語でも通用するのではないかなと思いますが、蒸留所はイギリスの中では特にスコットランドに多いです。 やはりスコッチウィスキーという事で、スコットランドで作られていないとスコッチと言わないし、３年以上寝かせていないといけないとか、いくつか条件があります。日本人にとってもスコットランドはスコッチの蒸留所がいっぱいある、というイメージを持っていると思います。その中で１つ特定の場所をご紹介したいと思います。 スコッチには色々な銘柄がありますが、日本でもよくスーパーにならんでいる"Glenfiddich"（グレンフィディック）という蒸留所をご紹介したいと思います。グレンというのは、スコットランドの言語で「谷」です。純粋な英語で谷は"valley"ですが、グレンです。「フィディック」は鹿です。「鹿が現れる谷」という意味です。ここの蒸留所に行くと入口に鹿の像がたっていて、なるほど鹿の谷なんだなという事がすぐ分かります。スコットランドでも特に田舎の方に蒸留所が多いのですが、何故かと言えば、良い水を得たいという事があります。スコッチの特徴としては、もちろん良い水ともう１つはピートと呼ばれる泥炭です。この泥炭と呼ばれるスモーク臭がスコッチに特徴を与えています。目の前にスコッチウィスキーとアメリカ製のバーボンを置いて交互に飲むとすぐに分かります。スコッチの方は、確かにスモーキーな味がします。スコッチを先に飲むとバーボンを飲んだ時にスモーキーな味がしないので、人によっては物足りなさを感じたりします。 この蒸留所はもちろんスコッチを作る場所ですけれども、スコッチを作って、それを保存して、寝かせる施設もあって、大抵の所が見学出来るようになっています。時間帯や人数や料金や決まったコースがある所が多くて、私もご多分に漏れず見学に行きました。大昔の話ですが、オンライン予約が始まった頃で、試みにやってみましたが、うまく予約が入っているか分からなくて、結局、現地に行ったところ予約できていませんでした。ですが、現地では思った日の思った回に入れてもらえて、結局見学をしたのですが、決まったコースで製造過程を勉強して、最後は試飲の時間でした。これは日本のビール工場と同じです。この日だけは絶対レンタカーを借りないで行こうと思い、公共交通機関で行きました。グレンフィディック蒸留所がある町は「Dufftown」という町なのですが、いわゆる旧国鉄から見放された、保存鉄道の蒸気機関車というか、ディーゼル車で町に向かうのですが、とても田舎です。この近くにはたくさんの蒸留所があって、マッカランとかストラスアイラとか、「あぁ聞いた事がある！」という人もいるかと思います。 さきほどの試飲のシーンに戻りますと、その時は３つのものの試飲で12年もの、18年もの、24年ものがありました。12年もの「美味しい。」、18年もの「あぁもう死んでもいいかな。」、24年もの「昇天しました！」。 やはり全く味が違います。それぞれの６年の差ですが、６年の差で雲泥の差です。その雲泥の差が２つ味わえるので「何で皆さん24年まで我慢出来ないのかな？」と思ったりしました。値段が全然変わってしまうので仕方がない事です。やはり長ければ長いほど、深みが増すというか、自然な味になると言ったらいいのでしょうか。私は100年ものを１度飲んだ事があるのですが、これは含んだ瞬間に体の中のどこにいったのかわからない、飲まずになんのひっかかりもなく全部蒸発して体の中にあっという間に行き渡るというような感覚を味わいました。皆さん、100年ものは手に入れようとしない方がいいくらい、ものすごい値段です。 この日はそのように非常に楽しい１日を送ったのですが、日本からは行くのがなかなか難しい場所です。イギリスの北のスコットランドに行くツアーは移動にすごく時間がかかるので、なかなか日本からツアーが出ません。ツアーがあっても、スコットランドに行ってから更に田舎の方に移動をしないといけないので、１日潰れてしまうような事が多いです。そうするとツアーにはなかなか入りません。従って来ている日本人の方は、ほとんどが個人客です。１日エジンバラならエジンバラ、グラスゴーならグラスゴーという大都市から、もう１日かけるつもりで行っていただく事になりますので、皆さんぜひ頑張ってみて下さい。 皆さんよく色々なスコッチを買っていて、どれも美味しいので何十本も買いたくなりますが、免税範囲があります。私のオススメとしてはミニチュア瓶です。50ccのミニチュア瓶がイギリスでは売られているので、それで数を沢山買ってこられたらいいのではないかと思います。また旅の途中で消費するにも、１瓶720ccはちょっと多いので、50ccの小瓶を買われたら良いのではと思います。 今日のまとめ： 今日は英国における異文化という事で蒸留所を巡る旅をご紹介しました。ぜひどこか１箇所でいいので行ってみて下さい。

In this episode, I have invited Angad Singh Gandhi. Angad is currently a Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich a world-renowned and premium Whiskey and Liquor brand. Angad, who used to be a banker, stumbled into his ambassadorship for Glenfiddich by chance. But when the offer came about, he couldn't refuse. He traveled to the distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, and met with like-minded people who taught him so much; he couldn't believe the dearth of knowledge to be had. But what struck him, in particular, was that Glenfiddich is one of the world's last family distilleries and that alone immersed him even more in the emotive side of the brand. Angad has an engineering degree and has completed his MBA from IMT Ghaziabad, India.

In Dufftown there lies a hidden history gem in local guest house, Tannochbrae. Discover more about the guest house in the latest episode of the History Scotland podcast.Tannochbrae is a place perhaps best associated with the fictional village introduced to us through A.J. Cronin’s short stories, Dr Finlay’s casebook. It was described as “a snug little village on the lochside”. Dufftown’s own Tannochbrae can be considered equally snug, welcoming and hospitable. Tannochbrae Guest House in Dufftown also has a medical theme to it, as Neil found out when he met with owners James and Louise. Whilst staying at Tannochbrae Neil asked James about the history of his Victorian villa guesthouse which retains many of the charms of the era. 

With whisky sales booming around the world, this week we're asking whether you should buy whisky as an investment. In the spring of 2019, more than 13,000 bottles of single malt were sold at auctions in the UK, an increase of 4,000 on the year before, and prices have typically grown by between 8-12% a year since 2015. We spoke to Mike Lord, independent whisky consultant and owner of The Whisky Shop in Dufftown, in the heart of malt whisky country.

Ross Blainey is William Grant & Sons’ The Balvenie Brand Ambassador for Australia and New Zealand. His job, as he puts it, is to bring the stories from the 126-year-old Speyside distillery to those who haven’t been able to get there. Some of those tales are also behind the company’s new ‘The Balvenie Stories’ range of whiskys. Ross’ first encounter with The Balvenie’s Single Malts was as a teenager, when he was tasked with building the whisky range at the Dufftown pub where he was working. He grew the bar’s range of single malts from under 10 to almost 200, yet found that he kept coming back to The Balvenie 12 DoubleWood as his go-to dram. There's one question Diageo's whisky team has been asked for years -- why can't we have more Mortlach single malt bottlings? The Dufftown distillery has been prized by blenders for decades because its malt whisky adds depth and texture to their blends, but we're about to see what Mortlach can be on its own. Diageo is investing millions of dollars to make Mortlach the next major single malt Scotch whisky, in what's being described as the company's biggest single malt venture since the launch of the Classic Malts range 25 years ago. We'll tour the distillery and discuss the expansion with managers Steve McGingle and Sean Phillips, and go through the four new Mortlach expressions to be launched in 2014 with Dr. Matthew Crow. In the news, The Macallan is getting a major investment of its own -- a $245 million distillery expansion scheduled to begin in late 2014.
